He also became governor of Georgia and then president on his own merits, not by leveraging his family name throughout his rise to power. Carter has also worked tirelessly to promote peace and through his promotion of Habitat for Humanity and other NGOs has bettered the lives of millions of people around the world.
Yeah, Carter was a weak president, but the Iranian hostages came home alive and we didn't end up spilling American blood and money in Iran (excepting aborted rescue mission). I voted for Reagan in 1980 instead of Carter, but in retrospect, I should have voted for Carter.
