I can't stand Flick Life. - jgambleii, on 10/11/2007, -7/+246You've seen a very rare thing just now... You've seen a man completely bare his soul to the world. And they loved him for it.
- altf4me, on 10/11/2007, -6/+179Absolutely brilliant. You wouldn't think it was live just listening to it.
- shrewduser, on 10/11/2007, -24/+189"hate to admit it, but when I watched it, the first thing I thought was "Did she just climax?""
your clearly a typical digg user, who hasn't seen climax-face enough to know.... - mcse2k3, on 10/11/2007, -4/+152Good God... the more I watch this video, the more I think I might like opra now?!?!??!?! wtf....
- TwoSlick, on 10/11/2007, -15/+147What's with that woman referring to him as a lump of coal, then as a frog? I'd like to smack her upside her arrogant head.
- Xymox, on 10/11/2007, -4/+134First he honestly says he doesn't have a lot of self-confidence but then he stuns everyone with his amazing voice. What a humble guy. I hope he wins!
- bariswheel, on 10/11/2007, -7/+133Good lord..!
I got goosebumps watching this clip. I might just start watching this show now.
Especially great to see everyone's reaction in the beginning when he stated he's going to sing opera. ;-) - Edorey, on 10/11/2007, -7/+130As a singer and music student, I can finally weigh in on something on digg and actually know what I'm talking about. Obviously, the guy has a really strong tenor voice, but he lacks the polish of a professional opera singer (which is understandable, the guy sells car phones). Listen to his approach to the high B at the end and then listen to Pavarotti or Bocelli in the clips posted above. I'm not trying to take anything away from this guy, he's got a hell of a talent and I hope he develops it further.
The fact is, he picked the right song. "Nessun Dorma" is an incredibly dramatic and effective aria, certainly one of the most accessible to people who don't normally listen to opera. This aria in the hands of a capable singer will bring the audience of Britain's Got Talent to its feet much faster than something more technically difficult and sung by a professional.
Incidentally, if you liked this aria and don't know much about opera, Puccini is a great composer to start with. His music is melodic and memorable, and the plots of his operas are rarely boring... unlike Wagner's (his are sometimes over 4 hours long and feature many fat women in pointy hats). You can watch a bunch of youtube clips and download the famous arias, but keep in mind that the power of opera is in the experience of seeing a production. So fork up the money and take your woman if you got one. Otherwise, go stag and find yourself a nice rich old broad. - MasterChi, on 10/11/2007, -6/+123Hands down, a ton better then all the American Idol crap over here in USA.
- sexybobo, on 10/11/2007, -27/+134Ok the people there need to learn you do not cheer when some one is singing opera. You sit threw listing to it and appreciating it until the end then go crazy. it is not like rock or other more modern music where you can yell threw the hole thing and it doesn't detract from it.
- artofwar420, on 10/11/2007, -4/+111That guy can transmit emotion. : ' )
- bariswheel, on 10/11/2007, -3/+78This video speaks volumes on the universal power of musical expression. Crosses all language barriers, there's really nothing like it.
- VtmnR, on 10/11/2007, -3/+69That was breathtaking... a diamond in the rough. Brilliant voice!
- tyywebb, on 10/11/2007, -3/+61Turandot, Act III, Nessun Dorma
- thethresh, on 10/11/2007, -1/+54Ok. I have never. never ***** cried at a goddamned digg article, thread, anything. *****. I was bawling like a 12 year old. Now I am going to watch it again. Good night all. *****.

You're comparing him to one of the greatest opera singers in recent history. A singer with years of professional training and experience. Paul, the man in the clip isn't a professional at all. He has a job selling cell phones. This is his first performance for an audience. You cannot compare the two. I think with training, Paul could be just as great as Pavarotti. And honestly, Paul's version of the song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Pavarotti's does not. - Gizza, on 10/11/2007, -1/+46@VtmnR (#7117493)
I love their reaction at the start when he said he was going to sing opera. They're like "oh no, here we go, this is going to be horrible". - AndrewJC, on 10/11/2007, -1/+44@lion9
To elaborate: It's Nessun Dorma, it's from the opera Turandot and it's written by Giacomo Puccini, who is, in my opinion, the best opera composer who ever lived.
As for the video, I actually AM an opera singer, if only in training (I have a degree in music but work in the computer industry, go figure), and I can say a couple things about the performance: One, it's definitely real--had it been fake he wouldn't have come in early before the orchestra on the last note, and he wouldn't have cracked on that penultimate high B. Two, this guy has some amazing talent. He's got a little tension in his body (you can see that because his body shakes with the vibrato, which usually means that he's holding too much tension in the shoulders), but you can probably chalk that up to nerves and perhaps a lack of training. In short, I guess what I'm saying is that if this guy found a teacher (and what teacher wouldn't want to work with him?), he could EASILY become a top performer of opera music, in concert if not in staged productions (learning to perform opera in a staged situation requires more schooling than this guy has time for, but he would kick ass in any concert performance). - coolian, on 10/11/2007, -2/+41I was expecting another embarrassment and thought "amazing" here was mere sarcasm.
Boy, was I mistaken. This guy moved even me - and I loathe opera! - speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -5/+39Flicklife is so damn slow I have to let it start and then pause it to let it download the rest. It's pissing me off.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+34Wow, he was incredible... it is a known fact it is impossible to physically make Simon Cowell cry, but deep in his small heart (even smaller than the Grinch) his heart cried. :)
- cvrefugee, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27End the show now and declare him the winner. Who can top that?
- draebor, on 10/11/2007, -2/+27I like how the British Paula Abdul kept referring to him as a lump of coal and a frog. Superficial whore.
- AZTriGuy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27I'm not much of a fan of Oprah either, but that's not what this video's about... :)
- Annt, on 10/11/2007, -4/+27If I could, I would digg 1000 times.
- spearce, on 10/11/2007, -9/+31amen
- bariswheel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23Pavarotti's version was exceptional as well, but I still like Paul's...?
Thanks for the link. We should dig that one as well.
http://digg.com/videos/music/Pavarotti_Nessun_Dorma_Stuns_Audience - wm2010russ, on 10/11/2007, -1/+21Paul Potts (Don Carlos) is a relative new comer to Grand Opera after an apprenticeship in Gilbert and Sullivan in Bristol.. His claim to fame is his 1999 appearance on Michael Barrymore's My Kind of Music. This was followed by singing for Bath Opera in Turandot as Prince of Persia and Herald. He has since performed with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and spent three months touring Northern Italy as a soloist, training under top teachers Mario Melani and Svetlana Sidrova. He has been invited back for a concert to be recorded and also for a masterclass with Luciano Pavarotti. Future plans include a summer tour with the RPO.
hes done opera for at least 8 years now... - RandysWay, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Here is a better YouTube link.
Rather than being 1:42 or 3:36 long, this one is 4:10 long. Great quality, too.
This guy definitely has talent..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1k08yxu57NA - kurtwoodfin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19I don't care what anybody says. There is no way any other person could out sing him in that competition. They should have given him the contracts right then and there and start the next season's competition. Based on submission comment, I expected the guy to be good...but not that good. The emotion in his face was unreal. I honestly thought he was going to start crying before he started to sing. I would like to know the guy's background. It is difficult to believe that someone that sings so well could have been unnoticed.
- vince916, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19I wish people would use youtube. Its fast compared to this.
- spearce, on 10/11/2007, -12/+30i would think Pavarotti could do it better. simon said that guys works in a car audio store? c'mon.
- RobotCitizen, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20After that beautiful and moving performance, while my eyes are welling up and my guard is down, they slap me in the face with Aerosmith?! That's just not right.
- lopla, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Wow, balls of steel to do something like that. He went for it with everything he had, very much an inspiration to watch.
- NeoCortex, on 10/11/2007, -3/+20Man, Britain is so much classier. I don't see opera ever flying on American Idol. Let's see Justin or Kelly try that *****.
- xrisnothing, on 10/11/2007, -10/+27wtf @ weensie5611's comment on youtube.
Watch it at youtube. Flicklife is taking forever to load videos. - pseudologue, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18it literally brought tears to my eyes.

- freehunter, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16He kind of did.
- dcpar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13ok, rather than compare this guy to Pavarotti, try comparing him to ManOWar.

- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14To all the Americans watching : The state of that guy's teeth is not indicative of the general populous here in the UK, okay? :)
- danbt79, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10@Scheissen
"...a version of American Idol for the limeys" ?
You do know American Idol started in the UK and was called Pop Idol - don't you? Idiot. - phunlee, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I Loved the clip.
I don't like this video site... flicklife. bad player, bad loading times, consistently..
The clip is amazing and I sometimes wish America would stand up for opera as quickly as these guys stood for his standing ovation. - artofwar420, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14True, this guy has something Pavarotti hasn't. Hope he follows his dream.
- bariswheel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10What is the name of the piece he's singing?
