- uptwolait, on 05/11/2009, -7/+199By age 15 I had stopped playing 'cops & robbers' and had moved on to playing 'doctor'.
- wjappe, on 05/11/2009, -12/+172Why is he playing with toy guns at his age? Also I would also think he would know better than to point it at cops.
- aramova, on 05/11/2009, -2/+97Me too, I loved playing gynecologist when I was 15...
- Foenetik, on 05/11/2009, -10/+85this "boy" is a huge moron and a ***** to boot.
- TheBadWolf, on 05/12/2009, -4/+77It's one part amusing and one part sad how absolutely naive some of the comments on this site are.
The kid got exactly what he deserved. He disobeyed the cop, his "toy" was illegal, and he threatened someone. Personally, I'm glad the cop was able to think so quickly and do his job. The kid was fifteen, he should have known better. Now he's facing the consequences of his stupid actions. - Dumbledorito, on 05/12/2009, -1/+66Never bring a toy gun to a gun fight.
- mwalker05, on 05/12/2009, -1/+6415 year old holding a handgun replica with no orange tip and pointing it at cops when they tell him to drop it? talk about dumb teenagers.
- Christianptriot, on 05/11/2009, -18/+80Until it is your hand on the firearm - and YOUR life on the line - and YOUR judgment as to when to fire and when NOT to fire - none of us can judge the officer's reaction to a situation that none of us were in.
A Vietnam veteran friend of mine explained the daily stress of war - and police officers go through similar reactions and fears on the job particularly in high-crime metropolitan areas - told me it would be like a woman being told every day that she was gong to be raped by someone - every day this someone would try to rape her. Then she is given a gun and told to walk among these people who were going to try to rape her.
After so many days and weeks and months of that type of constant and unrelenting fear, anxiety and hyper-vigilance, you develop a heightened sense of self-preservation and less regard for someone else's life when it is a "you or them" situation.
The kid should have been HOME, under his parent's supervision - where is the outcry over the parental neglect here? - trer, on 05/11/2009, -3/+55Is 'Cops and Robbers' on PS3 or Xbox 360?
- grapesofbaath, on 05/12/2009, -1/+44Agreed, this is a pretty black and white case of the cops playing by the book and doing everything right.
- archaist, on 05/11/2009, -3/+45Nuh uh! I was wearing invincible armor!
- militiaman21, on 05/12/2009, -6/+48Me too, I love playing gynecologist when I am 20...
- JimmyTheClam, on 05/12/2009, -1/+42OK, for those here too damn slow or lazy to RTFA...
FTA:
"Deputies answering reports of someone riding a bicycle and brandishing a handgun went to 20th Street shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday and spotted the rider, Gordon said.
They ordered him to drop the weapon but instead he pointed it at deputies, Gordon said.
One deputy fired a shot and hit the boy in the upper body, he said.
Gordon said the teen apparently had been playing "cops and robbers" using a replica gun that resembled a black semiautomatic pistol with brown grips.
Gordon said the gun lacked the orange tip that most toys carry to distinguish them from real weapons."
WTF possesed that kid to act like a jack ass?
He's lucky to be alive. - GHOSTR3V0LV3R, on 05/12/2009, -2/+4315 year old + toy guns?
- JimmyTheClam, on 05/12/2009, -1/+35Next time just use anesthesia
- pmb1414, on 05/11/2009, -9/+42At the age of fifteen, it makes no sense that he would point a toy gun at a police officer. Most eight year olds know better. Possibly an attempt at suicide by cop would be my guess. Also police do have the option to shoot to wound, but apparently it's easier to go by the book.
- unknamed, on 05/12/2009, -0/+33I wouldn't say you deserve to be shot, I would say you can EXPECT to get shot.
Because like William Munny says in Unforgiven: "Deserve's got nothin' to do with it." - wjappe, on 05/11/2009, -2/+35LOL,
It would be safer if he played the guitar also. - aramova, on 05/11/2009, -3/+35Good thing it wasn't Cowboys and Indians...He'd be living on a reservation right now...
- JimmyTheClam, on 05/12/2009, -2/+34That game just never gets old!
- piieerrrree, on 05/12/2009, -1/+32"Excuse me, does this cloth smell like chloroform to you?"
- inactive, on 05/12/2009, -0/+31It was an airsoft, i assume. I have a gun they describe. Black with a brown grip. Tiny orange tip that is easily spray painted. Realistic weight and look. Who ***** knows why he would point it at a cop
- bratterscain, on 05/11/2009, -2/+30He's 15. When I was 15, I easily could've gotten a toy gun and rode a bicycle around the neighborhood. And unless you keep them locked inside all day, they're going to find time to do that. Not all kids ride bicycles and happen to have a toy gun at the time but this kid did. Are you really going to keep bicycles and toy guns away from your kid? Even if this one looked real, they could've just as easily got it from friends. Parents can't win either way if they don't lock up their kid or they're seen as keeping them prisoners or prudes. And if they let them run around and be too free, they're sluts, hoodlums, etc. It's all kinds of views colliding and everyone thinks theirs is the right one. That's when it's time for understanding and tolerance that not everyone's going to have exactly the same rules as you. I can't blame anyone here. If so, probably a little on everyone.
- inactive, on 05/12/2009, -0/+27^ wait till you're married. "it'll" get old
- ronaldinho, on 05/12/2009, -0/+25Wow, I'm glad that Digg-ers actually showed some rationality here (not dominantly "Police State!" comments). Based on the article, the kid is clearly at fault. For one, you should not point a gun at a cop. Another, you shouldn't point a toy gun that looks like a real gun to a cop. If I was the cop, I might have fired at him too as I feel under threat.
- uisignorant, on 05/11/2009, -8/+33After this post YOU should go duck and hide.
Unbelievable. - TheBadWolf, on 05/12/2009, -2/+26Oh wow, labeling someone else's comment with a "/s" tag is even more annoying than labeling your own. I can't believe someone managed to make this trend even more irritating.
- blackinthmiddle, on 05/12/2009, -3/+26I generally abhor cops and have had a number of bad runs in with them, including having them point their guns at me for no damn good reason. With that said, you have to be a moron to think you can point a gun at *anybody* and not expect them to think you're trying to kill them.
Let's assume the cop takes your advice and ducks. The kid fires, misses the cop but the stray bullet hits an old lady and she dies. Do you realize just how dumb your advice is? You know, sometimes the cops actually do a good job! - flamesrule, on 05/12/2009, -3/+25I am sure he knows better now
- TheBadWolf, on 05/12/2009, -1/+23 "So you didn't see the article in the link?"
"Sir, I saw it, I just didn't bother reading it." - Antixian, on 05/12/2009, -0/+22playing house is easy, just take pills and be a dick.
- iEATcatFOOD, on 05/12/2009, -0/+21Bring a hand grenade. Nobody will expect that.
- Zcrubby, on 05/12/2009, -0/+21I wanted to, but every girl I asked just laughed at me..
- iEATcatFOOD, on 05/12/2009, -0/+21Peeping tom is also a fun game.
...no? anyone?
nevermind. - treytravis, on 05/11/2009, -0/+20and also smoked that ganja
- TheBadWolf, on 05/12/2009, -1/+20"Hey! Hey, kid! You there! The one pointing the gun at me! That's not real, is it? No? Promise? No, really, we gotta pinky swear on this *****. Oh, thank goodness. Shucks, boys will be boys!"
The kid removed the orange tip from the gun, which is placed there to prevent exactly this sort of thing. The cop's reaction was perfectly reasonable, and just the kind of thing we train them to do. As long as there's no proof of foul play on the cop's part (like shooting the kid after he had put the gun down, maybe) then I'm on the cop's side. He did his job well. - spriggig, on 05/12/2009, -2/+20I think this kid was on the far left end of the bell curve.
- Dimensio, on 05/12/2009, -5/+23I am curious; are you engaging in the practice commonly known as "trolling", or are you genuinely mentally retarded?
- publiclurker, on 05/12/2009, -0/+17Shooting to wound is for television and the movies. In the real world, you don't have that luxury. If you decide you are going to shoot, your goal basically to hit the target and prevent it from being a further threat.
- elTito, on 05/12/2009, -0/+16At no time is a police officer trained to "shoot to wound."
Never, never, ever. - Brassbud, on 05/12/2009, -2/+18The problem at that age is figuring out how not to play "house".
- Digger1123, on 05/12/2009, -0/+15I would guess it was like an airsoft gun with no orange tip.
- Rivetgeek, on 05/12/2009, -1/+16I dunno, playing "yeast infections and clotting" was never that fun
- harpoonhank420, on 05/11/2009, -5/+20i dugg you twice
- FarEastKilla, on 05/12/2009, -2/+17Isn't playing cop and robbers a bit old for a 15 yr old? I am not a fan of some cops, but this is justified. 15 year old should know better, he is closer being a man than a child. pointing a gun @ cops is just stupid and wrong. doesn't matter if the gun is fake or not, that's a aftermath issue. In the moment of a perceived life threatening danger, an officer of law had every right to react. the teenager was only wounded, better than death, he learn his lesson the hard way but at least alive with a full recovery. Now if it's a 9 year old boy, that's another debate
- blackinthmiddle, on 05/12/2009, -0/+15@Christianptriot
Times were different in a lot of ways a generation ago. I remember actually seeing the same cop walk the same beat every day. That way, the cop got to know the neighborhood and the people living there. I've always said that something like an Amadou Diallo would never have happened when I was growing up (although it only happened a few blocks from where I grew up) because the cop, instead of thinking Diallo's wallet was a gun would have said, "Hey, Amadou! How's it going? Hard day at work?"
Part of what makes cops jobs so hard nowadays is the fact that they move them around a lot and they don't really get to know a neighborhood. When you've got a cop who lives in the suburbs and works in a crime-ridden area, he's *immediately* at a disadvantage. He doesn't know the people. He doesn't have a pulse of the neighborhood. And he has a general fear that colors every single thing he does.
With that said, however, if you point a gun (real or fake) at a cop, consider yourself lucky if you live to tell the story to your kids! - inactive, on 05/12/2009, -0/+14Yes, toy guns are supposed to have an orange cap at the end indicating that they are toys. This nitwit apparently removed the orange cap for God knows what reason. You know, I'm going to go ahead and assume that mentally there's something wrong with this kid. I can't imagine anyone being that stupid without having some mental handicap or something.
- aceakm, on 05/12/2009, -0/+14When I was younger I had a inflatable toy gun. I was playing in my apartment complex with this bright blue gun and came around the corner to an officer who pulled his weapon and aimed right at me, yelling to drop the gun. I did and realized someone called the police on me, who sent a helicopter and tons of police units. The saddest part was that they deflated the gun. Guess they needed to feel important.
- smashblu, on 05/12/2009, -1/+15OK, we're not talking about a 4 year old kid getting shot here. This was a 15 year old, you should know not to point guns at a cop when you're 15. Not only that but he should know not to brandish a replica gun (this wasn't a Nerf gun) either. He would have likely been arrested even if he had dropped the gun when asked to since it didn't have an orange tip.
