- AquaOSX, on 05/07/2009, -1/+60My dad would LOVE to retire, but he can't. Especially since his retirement savings were recently devastated like most everyone else.
IMHO, getting out of the way simply isn't an option for a lot of boomers. - Nateon, on 05/08/2009, -3/+60George Carlin said it best:
"...the baby boomers: whiny, narcissistic, self-indulgent people who's simple philosophy: 'GIMME THAT! IT'S MINE!'...these people were given everything, everything was handed to them, and they took it all, sold it all; sex, drugs, and rock and roll and they stayed loaded for 20 yrs and had free ride, but now they're staring down the barrel of the burnout, and they don't like it, they don't like it so they've become self-righteous, and they wanna make things hard for young people, they tell em abstane from sex, say no to drugs, as for Rock and Roll they sold that for television commercials a long time ago, so they an buy 'pasta machines', and 'stair masters', and 'soy bean futures'.
You know something, they're cold, bloodless people. It's in their slogan 'no pain, no gain', 'just do it', 'play it hard', '***** happends, deal with it', 'get a life!'. These people went from 'do your own thing!' to 'just say no!', they went from 'love is all you need' to 'whoever has the most toys, wins!', and they went from 'cocaine' to 'rogaine' and you know something, they're still counting grams, only now it's fat grams! and the worst of it is we have to watch the commercials on tv for levis loose fitting jeans and fat ass docker pants because these degenerate, yuppie, boomer ***** suckers couldn't keep their hands off the croissants and the 'HaƤgen Dasz' and their big fat asses have spread all over and they have to wear fat ass docker pants. ***** these yuppies, and ***** everybody now that I think of it" - Wheelingdude86, on 05/07/2009, -13/+54Boomers will go down as one of the worst generations in history.

Thanks guys.
Truly our greatest generation. - trentrezn0r, on 05/08/2009, -7/+41This has nothing to do with Left 4 Dead, does it?
- Lealy, on 05/08/2009, -5/+36The Boomers are selfish the reasoning that they cant is because the were to busy spending, expecting the next 2-3 generations to take care of them (when they decide they are finally ready). They have left us with bankrupt SS and medicare and a bloated government. It is amazing that the same generation that burned their bra's, had free love and fought the man now think just because they are the man now it's ok. They don't care about the next generation they are to busy deciding how they can make the next couple of generations can pay for their debt and irresponsibility. They need to move on who cares what they want they had their chance and look what they did.
- michellets, on 05/07/2009, -5/+35I'm still not sure how I feel about her reasoning. I appreciate her tossing it up to promising young journalists, but I don't think I agree with the idea that boomers should all retire to make way for us. We'll just have to work harder and learn more increasingly obscure tech stuff to make them seem irrelevant and out of touch. That's all. :)

- 3mpire, on 05/08/2009, -3/+23As a 27 year old who is currently stuck in my career due to baby boomers "clogging the tubes" let me respond:
"Second, the financial climate for our generation is different. While Ms. Quindlen may have the wherewithal to walk away from a well-paying position, many of us don't, especially after the market collapse. Give the inadequacy of the Social Security funding, many of us have a jaundiced view of what to expect from that program."
Baby boomers have a very self-centered point of view. The world revolves around them. So lets talk about the financial climate for my generation.
Baby boomers created a world in which their children need to incur MASSIVE DEBT to get a college degree. Boomers make all the hiring decisions, and demand an undergrad degree--at minimum--to even consider entry into the professional workplace. This was not the case for them. So right off the bat, my generation's personal finances start in the hole. THANKS GUYS!
Next: Baby boomers have created a massive national debt, frontloading the cost of taking care of them in their old age -- social security -- onto our plate. So what happens when the selfish babyboomers all need medical care and social security is broke (because they never bothered to fix it when they were in charge)? It will have to come out of my generation's pockets.
"While the times may have passed by some of us, others are still surfing the wave of progress and have a great deal to contribute."
Bull. *****. The technical IQ of anyone over 45 is ludicrously low. Anyone who was born after 1980 is often more comfortable with technology, can better understand how it could be applied to solve problems, and could make better judgment calls when it comes to selecting or implementing a technical solution to a business problem. Anyone who works in a business run by baby boomers knows that they don't have the aptitude to make these decisions themselves, but are unwilling or unable to accept that their junior staff actually know more than they do. It threatens their ego and self image. In my experience, baby boomers actively fight technology out of fear and self preservation at the expense of the business or the technically savvy's ability to Get ***** Done.
"And people leaving college today could well live to be 100 or more. With a work career of 70 or 80 years ahead, what's the rush?"
It would probably take my generation working 70 or 80 years to clean up the mess. Thanks.
Because of baby boomers I have loads of debt from college, i can't afford to buy a house because baby boomers speculated the housing market into the stratosphere, i couldn't get a loan even if i wanted because i can't save 20% down payment when I'm already in the hole, etc. etc. etc.
"Last, I don't believe that younger people with superior ability will remained trapped behind older workers any more than Lou Gehrig remained trapped behind Wally Pip. Quality will come out, and capitalism is the system that best allows this to happen."
Bull. *****. For one, baby boomers do not have the ability to tell a ***** from someone who knows technology because they don't have the capacity to make that decision for themselves. Baby boomers tend to be highly susceptible to manipulation because they're dependent on others to fill their gaps in knowledge about the current landscape.
The only way that this will change is when baby boomers retire. - conspiracyofone, on 05/08/2009, -2/+22Baby Boomers pretty much perfected the Dine 'N Dash. They had their fill, and now the next generation gets left with the bill.

At least, that's largely true from my experience. - duncanidaho, on 05/08/2009, -1/+11Difficult to supplant the boomers with talent when they still play the "gold 'ol boys" games, glass ceilings, and other such things. boomers are the root cause for the downfall of america. from the greatest generation to the worst generation, such a shame.

- richmomz, on 05/08/2009, -3/+13I'm sure a lot of boomers would LOVE to retire but unfortunately many have lost half their retirement savings (or more) and their home equity has been trashed in the last couple of years. In many cases they need the money more than we do as they are approaching the end of their work years, while younger generations have their whole life to catch up.

Also, PILLS HERE - KainDL, on 05/08/2009, -2/+12Is that honestly how you think promotions work sir? As a person that doesn't even know what my generational title is, no sir that is not how they work.
There are only so many jobs, and the only time some of us can take jobs better then the ones we're currently at is when someone on the upper level goes higher up, joins another company or dies at their desk from a heartattack.
Jobs that are considered "promotions" don't just magically appear because I and my cohorts are great employees. - redcolumbine, on 05/08/2009, -0/+9It's the employer's call. Which boomers represent quality, and which stagnant seniority? Sure, don't undervalue intellectual capital, but don't drive away innovation in the name of not rocking the boat, either.

The average age at Google is around 30, and in 2004 approx 4% were over 40.
You pick Cisco, Intel, and Apple, however I can easily point to a raft of entire industries that show a shocking lack of technology acumen. The auto industry. The news industry. The music industry. Entire industries.
As for the college argument, anecdotal evidence aside, the numbers are not in dispute. The cost of college today versus thirty years ago is much, much higher. The average college student starts their professional career with heavier financial obligations than any generation in history. This is an artifact of the system that baby boomers created. iPhones or designer jeans don't fit into that equation.
What is irritating is the baby boomer's unwillingness or inability to see the landscape from any perspective other than their own.
I'm willing to work hard. I AM working hard. In SPITE of baby boomers in management that make double my salary but depend on me to solve their technical problems for them.
Our generation is going to take over and have our chance. That isn't in doubt. We're already taking it.
But please excuse me if I read an article like this, or a comment like yours, and don't feel humbled and wowed by baby boomer delusion. - 3mpire, on 05/08/2009, -2/+10Yeah if only those kids would go out and buy a house of their own!
Hey mr baby boomer banker: I'm a college graduate with massive debt due to college loans. I was wondering if you'd give me a loan to buy a house that is overvalued because baby boomers decided to play house and speculated the real estate market into oblivion. What? You won't give someone with debt a loan to cover the purchase of a $275k craftsman built in 1912 with bad plumbing?
Hey mr baby boomer boss: I need to advance my career to get out of the debt that the system you built for me saddled me with. I need to make more money so I can get in on this whole "ownership society" your posterboy george bush gushed about. I want to spend money in the marketplace to help the economy. Oh wait, you're not hiring because you've got a bunch of other baby boomers who don't know anything about technology, have inflated salaries, didn't save for retirement, and would threaten you with an age discrimination suit if they were replaced by a young person?
Hey baby boomer parents: can i sleep in the basement? - viperrepiv, on 05/08/2009, -5/+13Actually not so much. If someone is in a managerial position and doing an OK job, a company will not fire him/her. So that junior person will be stuck until that other one quits.
- killdashnine, on 05/08/2009, -1/+9Coach, mentor, and teach; mantra for anyone with useful experiences who don't necessarily want to be left out in the cold. There's room for everyone.
- PakoBedejo, on 05/08/2009, -1/+9Dugg...but don't think that it's just folks born after 1980. 1970+ babies are still quite relevant & up to date, if they weren't raised to worship at the TV altar.
It's the people who carried cans of Aqua Net to their college classes & older who have absolutely no idea what SMTP, HTTP, FiOS, USB, CAT6, OS, HDD, VOIP, etc means.
I'm 31 & a Tool/Die Designer by trade with a background in Machining. I'm now a Project Manager designing tradeshow exhibits & am my company's IT guy...for $30,000/yr. My rent, car payment, & insurance payments eat more than 40% of my income for a position which would have earned a Boomer a 2nd house on the beach in the economy they inherited. Now that the economy has become fully Boomerized, you have to either lie, cheat, or steal to make a decent wage w/out an $80,000 educ...I mean...piece of paper. - birgirpall, on 05/08/2009, -2/+10GRABIN PEELS

- Aadain, on 05/08/2009, -2/+9And how do the "less-experienced" get that experience?? Magic? This is the problem: there is very few positions for the up and coming generation to cut their teeth. Entry level positions have been eliminated or off-shored or expected to be replaced with college education. And how do you know they are "less-successful" when they aren't given the chance? I've encountered people twice my age that are only a third as effective as me, but since they are "more experienced" they get the better positions and better salaries. Never mind that someone young can do that job better.
