- SpazAttack5000, on 11/12/2009, -0/+12Is "hooliganism" actually a real crime? (According to Firefox it is at least a real word)
- tusharpant, on 11/12/2009, -0/+10lol.. reading the title only for the story made me laugh
- cawfee, on 11/13/2009, -1/+7"Two satirical bloggers who staged an interview with a donkey were sent to prison" != "Two satirical bloggers were sent to prison for staging an interview with a donkey".
That first line is horrible journalism though. - chicagojack, on 11/12/2009, -2/+7I once slept with a donkey
- Ezrayan, on 11/13/2009, -2/+6FTA: "Emin Milli and Adnan Hadjizadeh were physically attacked, apparently unprovoked, in a Baku restaurant. Witnesses reported that the two had been discussing their youth movement activities when two strangers approached them, demanded that they stop discussing such matters, and attacked them."
now STFU, adults are talking - mishabear, on 11/13/2009, -0/+4I agree it's bad writing but it's not the same meaning. "Two boys who drove chevys went to jail" is not "two boys went to jail for driving chevys." These men didn't go to jail FOR the donkey act. These men went to jail for the obviously trumped up charge of "hooliganism" derived from their satirical interview, although realistically, it's likely that they DID go to jail for the satirical interview.
Had the bystanders not attacked them, however, there likely wouldn't have been an issue. Obviously free speech is a luxury there. I wonder what happened to the men that attacked them. They likely got rewards from the government. - jackirock, on 11/12/2009, -1/+5heheh...! interview was not good :P
- BESTenemy, on 11/13/2009, -0/+3Human Rights Watch, the US State Department and CNN all getting involved, so it's got to be be big! Let's examine the article:
"Hadjizadeh was imprisoned for two years and Milli was sentenced to two and a half, Hadjizadeh's father, Hikmet, told CNN by phone from Baku, the capital of the oil-rich former Soviet republic."
"Oil-rich" must be a code phrase for "in desperate need of liberation"! As for the donkeys - one must have contained a weapon of mass destruction, and the other concealed nuclear materials destined for Iran! That would totally explain the high cost of the purchase! Those Nazi-ass German donkeys! It all makes perfect sense!
When do we deploy?! - mebbin, on 11/12/2009, -2/+5Now what the hell it means?
- Eldorian, on 11/13/2009, -0/+2I'm going to bury you as inaccurate, because you need to RTFA
The bloggers were the ones who were attacked. - gillytech, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3What in the hell falls under "houliganism"? Ha!
- geopiscean, on 11/12/2009, -2/+4this sounds really funny...
- Falldog, on 11/13/2009, -0/+2Sentenced to prison in Azkaban? Jeez. Sounds far too harsh to me.
- nepidae, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1Let the UN deal with this.
- Betchacall, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1Came to this thread for Azkaban! good job.
- mishabear, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1I hear he was a real jackass.
- LoriWms, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1No, that's still wrong. The bloggers were attacked by two individuals. The bloggers, though not the aggressors, were convicted of "hooliganism" and sent to prison for 2 years plus. Their attackers were set free. One of the bloggers,
Hikmet Hadjizadeh, believes their real crime was "fighting for democracy, fighting for European values" in the authoritarian nation sandwiched by Russia, Turkey and Iran.
(The bloggers)..."were physically attacked, apparently unprovoked, in a Baku restaurant. Witnesses reported that the two had been discussing their youth movement activities when two strangers approached them, demanded that they stop discussing such matters, and attacked them.." - numberneal, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2he shouldn't have gone for 2nd base
- Spinducky08, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1For a second there, I thought the donkey was thrown in jail for assault. I could see why:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4clHUKirYM (NSFW) - Tkuebrich, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1I got excited when I read Azkaban on accident instead of Azerbaijan.
- LoriWms, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1These two bloggers are in prison for political reasons, i.e., they are political prisoners. If they were U.S. citizens and living in the US, their acitivites would fall under protected FREE SPEECH. Ideally, their attackers would be charged, not them. Even in the US, protesters can sometimes be charged or fined if they attack others (misdemenors) but it's not likely they would get 2 years in prison unless they really did a crime serious enough to lead to prison time.
Per the article, they have been involved in other activities which their government deems to be against them.
"Hikmet Hadjizadeh (one of the young men sent to prison) believes their real crime was "fighting for democracy, fighting for European values" in the authoritarian nation sandwiched by Russia, Turkey and Iran."
Another reason to appreciate the freedom we have in our country. - INV3Ntv, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1So true. The donkey was such an ass.
- Endeavour3d, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1Azerbaijan is a dictatorship(its democracy is a front just like in Iran or North Korea), just wanted to throw that out there before people start complaining about BS crimes, dictatorships haven't really been the type to care about civil liberties.
- gegan249, on 11/13/2009, -1/+1Thought it was the Onion there for a moment. Had to double check the URL.
- maeon3, on 11/13/2009, -2/+2This is yellow Journalism.
Title should read instead: "Bloggers are arrested and put into prison for assaulting two students".
Buried as inaccurate. - burrdugg, on 11/13/2009, -0/+0The funniest part of the article was when the U.S. State Department criticized the verdict for "non-transparent investigation, closed court hearings, and disproportionate legal charges". Get it? As if the U.S. was beyond reproach. Great fun, satirists always crack me up!
- kaosethema, on 11/13/2009, -1/+1HEEHAW
ok, someone had to do it. - paulwmsutah, on 11/13/2009, -0/+0The U.S. State Department criticized the verdict as "a step backwards for Azerbaijan's progress towards democratic reform.
redic..our US govt is way behind the times. And, since when has the internet not been a place for freedom of speech? It's sad and pathetic our US govt wont stand behind something rediculous as this - tiberone, on 11/13/2009, -3/+2ugh stop talking
- Sornos, on 11/13/2009, -9/+4Horribly misleading title. Actually, no, it's not misleading. It's a downright lie to get diggs.
They were not jailed for a satirical interview of a "donkey". They were jailed because they assaulted two other people.
The irony of all this is that Digg will clearly digg this without any sense of wrong doing but then condemn Fox as evil incarnate for doing the same. - MacBookForMe, on 11/12/2009, -9/+3Send a drone missile str8 into that crooky President of that corrupted banana republic and we could all blog about one cool liberating firework...+ CNN will get its prime news

What is Digg?
