- joshjoneswas, on 10/12/2007, -4/+63I just stopped in here to see what the guitar/music know-it-all types would have to say when they tried to knock this guy. I'm seeing the usual two-types:
1) The uninformed ones who completely knock on it and appreciate none of it.
2) The half and halfs that want us to think that they are insightful enough to acknowledge one or two neat qualities of this guy's playing style, but remind us that there are other better/cooler/more difficult/technical things that he could be doing.
Anyone who watches this should agree that it is an excellent talent working there. - dignation, on 10/12/2007, -2/+47I find it impressive the way he plays both rhythm and lead parts.
- flernk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32Holy Smokes!
I don't know about the best guitar solo I've ever heard, but that is BY FAR the best guitar solo I've ever SEEN. - zatrix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29cheating? how do you cheat when playing a guitar?
- SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Dont hate, appreciate
- solidsmoke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Cheating? If holding a guitar that way provides an advantage, everyone should do it.
- imightbewrong, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Skill. Pure Skill
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Sort of like acoustic techno..
- zukeft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Kinda reminds me of Kaki King.
- joeysafe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Entertaining, but Mr. Clapton certainly has nothing to worry about. It's a nice variation from more traditional guitar-ing, but perhaps most people play guitar a certain way because that's how it usually works best. This guy has mastered his art form, but there are plenty of fantastic acoustic guitar solos by Mr. Clapton, for example, that overall are better. This guy is great, but this song isn't the greatest. Just my two cents. Well, three cents with tax. But that's all paid for with advertising, so its free for you...
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14not the best, but DAMN good!
- xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Yeah I said the same thing when Hendrix picked up the guitar to play it with his teeth... that's clearly cheating.
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10You can't even compare Petrucci to this guy. They're from two different schools of thought. I doubt Petrucci could do as good as that guy can with a fingertapping acoustic song and I'm sure this guy can't do a metal song as good as Petrucci.
That song is not the best I've heard at all though. There are far better acoustic fingerstyle guitarists out there such as Michael Hedges and Justin King just to name 2. - jesushouston, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12For more guitar with rhythm and lead parts, you may want to check out Robert Johnson, who was doing it about a century ago.
- spisska, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This is a very similar technique as that used by Stanley Jordan -- a jazz guy who's probably most famous for playing two guitars at once. It's quite an amazing thing to see.
This guy's impressive, but the 'best solo evar!' it is not. (It may be the best that gregharmon has ever heard, but that just means there's plenty of good music out there for him to discover.)
Still anything that involves real people playing real instruments, particularly in fresh and innovative ways, is a good thing in my book. - usefulidiot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9neat technique, not really the best solo though... check out stream by tim reynolds(I dont think the guitar can be humanly played any faster than he does)
- thetanbark, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8This guy is a fingerstyle guitarist, much like Michael Hedges. One guy that is amazing to watch play is Andy McKee. Just listening to the tracks, remember he is a one-guy show! http://www.myspace.com/andymckee2
- daeken, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Since people are talking about playing multiple parts, check out the Chapman Stick. It's an instrument entirely based around tapping and is specifically for playing multiple parts at once. Very fun instrument.
- CocoDaPuf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Reminds me very much of Kaki King
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wsFeXWc82Y&search=pink%20noise - FreeiPodGuy.com, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Another great guitarist proficient at tapping is the 9-fingered Phil Keaggy. http://www.philkeaggy.com/
- blakemara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, I'm jealous too
- EmmSee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nice Flamenco-Harmonic-Tapping acoustic thing he's got going on. It's quality, but it's far from one of the best acoustic solos I've heard.
Andres Segovia
John McLaughlin
Al DiMeola
Paco DeLucia
Those are some of my favorite acoustic/classical players. - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was thinking the same thing. There are a lot of similarities to progressive house.
- muka3d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Visit his website for video downloads:
http://www.erikmongrain.com
Direct Download of this video: http://erikmongrain.com/multimedia/airtap.mpg - Phomeister, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My first impression was it was spectacular and amazing..but after watching and listening all the way through.. I agree with joltjake.. Doesn't seem like what he's doing is too amazing..just a bit different.
- maddoginthefog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My thoughts exactly. This is guy is good too.
- m00nmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gee, I guess if it isn't on MTV and doesn't have a bumpin' beat, it's no good, eh?
Geez, if you don't like it, close the video and go away. - Bega, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4definitely one of the best I've heard. I've never seen anyone play a guitar that way before either, some real talent there.
- quoigonfishin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This guy is great!
He reminds me of a guy named Stanley Jordan who was really big back in the eighties. Check out his rendition of Elanor Rigby.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1LN685YH7s - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6joshjoneswas: People are coming in to say "That was cool, but xxx does y better" because the headline was "Best Acoustic Guitar Solo I've ever heard"
If people didn't post stupid titles like that, people wouldn't come to disagree. The title "Great tap technique guitar solo" would have gotten my digg.
I enjoyed it thoroughly, and the guy's got great technique, but he's no SRV

Anyway, you forgot type three: The dorks who have to come in and generalize all the other posts into a couple of narrow categories in an attempt to make them look "better than the trolls" - davetcg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@electro, definitely open tuning. The harmonics are a dead giveaway. I would guess DADF#AD.
- mos6507, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really think (the late) Michael Hedges owns this style of music. Whenever someone else does this kind of thing, especially the harmonics and tapping the body of the guitar for percussion it feels like it's shamelessly copying him. Maybe a few songs are okay, but I wouldn't make a career out of it.
I also think it's very hard to write interesting compositions because of the need to constantly fill the sonic space (hence using open strings and repeating tapping figures). That's why Michael Hedges wasn't exactly prolific, and eventually moved on to vocal albums with fuller orchestrations. - jazzman251, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Charlie Hunter anyone? He plays an 8 stringed guitar and he covers the bassline, comping, and melody/solos at the same time. When he uses the right effects I seriously think that I'm listening to a Hammond B-3 (which often covers the same three aspects, but they have pedals for the bassline). I was unable to find a good video of him however. This http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I65WyzA1lf8&search=charlie%20hunter kinda shows it.
- martinlanny, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Even better skills on electric guitar: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIjjSb2_UvI
- benjholla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I went to the itunes music store to see if he didn't have an album out, but had not luck. Through a little research and some trial and error I was able to get the youtube videos off the web and into Mpeg4 format so that I could add them to my itunes library. I wish I could have supported his work financially, but here is how I did it. First check out the web site http://www.blank-thoughts.com/2006/04/23/guide-downloading-youtube-videos/ (which happened to be a previous digg I believe) Then use the program presented on that page to convert the flvs to mpeg 1. (mpeg1 is the only one that ended up working for me, the other either lost the sound or the video in the process) Itunes played these files, but it was pretty choppy and unsatisfying, so the final step is to use this program http://www.divx-digest.com/articles/article_avi2ipod_page1.html (which is also freeware) to convert the mpegs to mpeg 4. Make sure to use the ipod mp4 setting in the setting of the program, and your good to go add them to your library.
- darxmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You could check out this guy too:
http://www.adrianlegg.com/ - PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You Diggers need to find a better adjective than "amazing." Seriously... ¬_¬
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12 month reply, but he edited it to change it to I've.
- TeKoverride, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone find the tab for this quick!
- Alystair, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know who the bassist is? Jeeze that's quite the coupling.
- sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally, someone mentioned Richard Thompson! I've had the honour of playing onstage with him, and let me tell you, he's hard to keep up with. The song of his that always gets to me is "1952 Vincent Black Lightning".
- hypnotiq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah you are right. I was a music major in college, and emphasis in guitar (changed majors though after couple of years). I play all styles, but I have to say this is one style I could never get a grip on. It's not the first person I have seen do it, but no doubt this kid is absolutely sick at playing this way.....this one is going in my vault =) Amazing stuff
- fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Phil Keaggy pioneered this style a while back - he's only got 9 fingers too...
- H3BR3W, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems like his speciality would be bass.
Okay, nevermind. Just watched the Day Tripper/Lady Madonna clip, and it looks like he's just plain good. - spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow, you're a complete prick.
- eclectro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree that it is like a hammerd-dulcimer style. But really, would playing backup for Kenny G and selling a million (actually more like a zillion) CDs be a bad gig? I don't think so.
Digg guitar geniuses, puzzle me this - is he using a standard E-A-D-G-B-E string set, or an alternative tuning???
noob guitarists want to know. - Krasnichuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now, I'm a pretty musical person, I myself play the piano, djembe (google it if you want), saxophone (any of them), trombone and guitar. Now I only have a limited amount of playing experience and ability since I've been really into music for only about 2 or 3 years. But I do have to say, this is an extremely amazing solo, I really liked it. It was really awesome to see the rhythm and melody being played on a single guitar. He definitely uses some of the aspects of a guitar that aren't usually used. All I have to say is it is one of the more amazing things I've heard and seen on a guitar.
Chris - WyllyWylly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dunno about the rest of you, but if I could the guitar like this... I wouldn't care what anyone at Digg thought of my talent. Definite digg.
- Krasnichuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah kinda weird like that isn't it...
