- liquisoft, on 07/13/2009, -1/+74You know, I don't agree with the war at all, but that's irrelevant. Our country doesn't take good care of its soldiers.
I hate violence, and I hate what our soldiers have to do, but dammit I respect them and appreciate them for doing it. I know I'm not alone. Yet, sadly, these soldiers come home filled to the brim with horrific imagery in their heads, or physically debilitating wounds, or a whole slew of other problems. They hardly get anything close to the medical treatment they need and deserve when they come home, and then we act like they should figure out a way to reintegrate into society as if nothing ever happened.
Oh but of course it makes it all better when we drive around with those "support our troops" bumper stickers. Those help a ton. - Auraness, on 07/13/2009, -3/+74Only the dead have seen the end of war. - Plato
- Bolinoak, on 07/13/2009, -5/+40No offense, but that just annoying to hear. I really don't care if you want to push your agenda of legalizing weed (Heck I'm leaning towards legalizing myself, but not completely convinced all people will use it responsibly.), I just think it's very inappropriate here.
Some one died here do to an addiction. You don't say that giving someone weed would have fixed their problem. It's just disrespectful to not only the person who died, but the family and friends of the deceased. - dafragsta, on 07/13/2009, -1/+29Knock on wood, but the standard rule of thumb for me is "If it can kill me in one go, I'm probably not going to do it."
- rockon4life45, on 07/13/2009, -7/+31Grow the ***** up. What he needed was real help. This isn't the place for your pro weed propaganda.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -3/+21And the dumbass award goes to...
- benroy, on 07/13/2009, -2/+20I hate to admit it but I have tried huffing the canned air. It provides about a three minute high, followed by thirty minutes or so of terrible come-down. It feels like your veins are filled with vomit, gravity seems to triple. Yet you are compelled to do more. Luckily I only did it a few times and didn't die, just a little brain damage.
- phantomsranch, on 07/13/2009, -4/+21This is so ***** sad, the Iraq war has been such a massive waste of the talent, blood and valor of young Americans. All so that Dick Cheney can buy a new ivory back scratcher. ***** Cheney, ***** Halliburton ---***** them in the ear. Their greed is nothing short of mortifying.
- ChiaGod, on 07/13/2009, -0/+17From the article, quoting the late Specialist: "I killed a lady, a mother,"
If any of you guys knows a soldier who's freaking out over guilt like this, make them get help IMMEDIATELY. And by make, I mean, stay with them until they are helped or in a good mental state.
And really, someone with a guilty conscience like that is looking for redemption. Not in the biblical sense, I mean in the mental sense. Let them know even if they can't undo what they did in the past, they can honor that person's memory by doing good deeds in their honor. They'll *need* someone to tell them this.
Have them make a list of things they can do at the end of which they'll consider themselves forgiven.
In other words, give your friend a way out that isn't self destructive. - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -1/+18You should learn to read the article because it has nothing to do with what you think it does.
- kleash, on 07/13/2009, -1/+17RIP
- Raptor007, on 07/13/2009, -0/+16The description made me expect a silly Darwin-awards story, but instead it's a sad and serious one. A good read though.
- IMustBeEmo, on 07/13/2009, -0/+15In peace, sons bury their fathers; in war, fathers bury their sons. - Herodotus
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+13Sad thing is if he had been on meth or coke or just a raging alkie he would probably be alive to day and able to be helped. Take this as a lesson kids - depraving your brain of oxygen to get high is the worst possible way to get high. Yes, I am saying do meth over wham-whams (though preferably none of the above)
- dkrender, on 07/13/2009, -0/+12This man's story is so sad... Really, it just goes to show that the heroes that do come home aren't all basking in glory and proud that they served their country. War is a real bitch and this just proves that war ruins lives, even on the "winning" side.
I'm sure this guy was a good man because of how such a horrible mistake caused him to ultimately take his own life. It's so terrible that he wasn't able to get help right away and that his family had to watch him suffer. - FightTest, on 07/13/2009, -1/+12Comparing marijuana to huffing is stupid. The guy didn't want to get stoned, he wanted an escape.
You and your bag of Doritos weren't going to save the guy. - Schis, on 07/13/2009, -1/+12I think that people need to realize the harm from huffing Dust-Off. I mean I know he was old enough to make his own choices, but in general I think people need to be informed of the dangers. I used to do that in high school for a cheap high because I couldn't buy alcohol and it was cheap and legal for me to buy. First it was one can to escape reality and then it turned into buying 5 cans a night, just to travel to a made up world in my head. Sure some people think it's fun to do and what not, but I mean I was hooked on it where I started doing it all day long. I used to pass out for hours, and then eventually my parents found me, my brother found me, my friends found me and it was just a bad situation. It took counseling to get me off the stuff, just like a drug and if I even smell Dust-Off now (because it does have a little smell to it), I want to just vomit. All I am saying is if you plan on doing it, just realize you can get hooked on it, and it is not fun at all.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -1/+11shut up when adults are talking
- gonorea007, on 07/13/2009, -4/+14You don't get how freedom works I guess. Soldiers cannot say which missions they support or do not, otherwise why participate in any mission that could get you killed? So instead, they risk their lives for all missions hoping that the CinC, Congress, and voters do not risk their lives unnecessarily.
You still have your freedom, you have no idea how much you have. You don't have to throw a coup to create a society just to eat and work; you don't have to spend everyday of your life in survival mode securing what you believe is yours...soldiers do that for you. - ChiaGod, on 07/13/2009, -1/+11No amount of escape, be it in the form of cannibis, alcohol, inhaling compressed air, playing WoW, or whatever can help in that situation.
When you are mentally ill you have to take care of the root cause. This man needed a steady psychiatrist, he needed the full support of his family and friends, and yes, possibly he needed medication, but w/o the support and w/o dealing with the issue he wouldn't have improved, he would have just been masking his symptoms.
Plain and simple, he needed help. Just like if you break a leg. Sitting still and popping aspirin may make the pain away, but won't deal with the biggest issue. And in the military they are trained to "man it up" and not get help for mental issues (per the article they don't even like to talk about it).
And yes, Cannibis can help with depression, but it won't automatically erase or help him cope with the horrors he witnessed during his service.
And though I'm pro legalization, you have to realize it's really f'n horrible to pop in a comment/advertisement like that. How would you feel if an ad popped up with:
"Specialist Dwyer would still be alive if he had the great entertainment value of a Sony Playstation 3 (TM)!"
Time and a place man.... time and a place. - theonlywizdum, on 07/13/2009, -1/+10Failed grammar Nazi needs to get back to class.
- blome69, on 07/13/2009, -0/+9very true, regardless of your views on politics, you must look at the type of people who enlist in the military. Growing up as a military brat myself and joining later, I've observed many of the people who enlist are people who don't see any other options other than to enlist. They see the benefits of military life (housing, food, medical coverage, etc.) and accept this because of there former situation. I try not to stereotype because there are several other reasons to enlist, but putting yourselves in the shoes of others could be beneficial in understanding and empathizing with the lives of our troops (both democrat and republican). Regardless of your political views consider the individuals involved and what they endure to support their families.
- Phersick, on 07/13/2009, -1/+8Didn't you see the first reply get buried? While I'm all for legal weed, this definitely isn't the place to discuss it
- smcnow, on 07/13/2009, -0/+7Perhaps one thing exacerbating the problem is the insistence on calling every soldier a hero. Heroes never let you down and can do no wrong. Soldiers are men and women who have a job and do it the best they can. If a soldier is constantly hearing how he or she is a hero when inside they know they have done some pretty bad things there is going to be a disconnect. Their actions a soldier will become the failings of a hero -- why did I shoot that kid, why didn't I save my buddy...? It is hard enough for a soldier, so how does a hero seek help before the pressure is critical?

- thejackyl, on 07/13/2009, -1/+7That's ***** sad.
- trs21219, on 07/13/2009, -1/+7i love how inconsiderate and immature people are. so ***** tired of the "the marines/army/navy/air force etc have never done anything for me so why should i care" mentality. go ***** yourself dude. the difference between people like you and people that are serving our country is that when you would run away from violence like a little bitch they run into it, head on, guns blazing. every single one of those people are heroes.
- jack104, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5Don't you dare dishonor his sacrifice by saying dumb ***** like that. Its guys like him that made it possible for you to sit in your computer chair and browse youtube instead of being drafted to go fight someone else's war. Piss off.
- RebornInFlames, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5Shut up doucheau
- awicks89, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5how about you never say anything like that ever again.
- liquisoft, on 07/13/2009, -1/+6I'm probably in the minority, but I wouldn't mind paying higher taxes if my money went to things that mattered instead of political games.
- cryonix, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5Great article but I can't stand that unnecessary comment length:
Especially when its not even the full article. - jurassiqpark, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5can you link me to the source for your "95% stat," and the "majority of military personnel cause chaotic *****." thanks that'd be great.
- benroy, on 07/13/2009, -1/+5If the target were aimless, irrelevant and/or ignorant comments, you would win.
- jack104, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4When you grow a brain, you may then comment on digg again.
- theonlywizdum, on 07/13/2009, -2/+6You are a despicable human being.
- Binto, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4To be fair...most people don't enlist to go kill people. Ignorance such that you display is just embarrassing on a species level.
I highly doubt if your brother or sister or father or mother was in this situation you would be so giddy to outlandishly declare "he deserves what he got and more".
And people think wars are bad? I'm pretty sure that anyone not affiliated with this planet (assuming such exists) would find attitudes as yours far worse than anything a war can do.
I wish I could be angry with you...but I just pity your pathetic existence. :/
EDIT: looking at your history it seems that you are just a bitter person in general. It says you are 35...but you act like you are 14 by the looks of your comments. Go back to mommy's dinner table and have her spoon-feed you more goodies. Silly child. - wezel, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3dugg for epic douchebagery
- theonlywizdum, on 07/13/2009, -5/+8To put it politely, GO ***** YOURSELF.
- JohnnySoftware, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Yeah, I think you overlooked an important word at the "end" of the article. The word 'NEXT'.
- Rivfader, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3One death is a tragedy, a million is a statistic - Stalin
- jack104, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Go to hell pall.
- BrogMaN, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4It appears that you are the one that has no idea. Dick Cheney was the CEO of Halliburton, a private construction company that has profited enormously from the Iraq war, thus Dick Cheney profited from the war. This isn't an idea, or an opinion, this IS what happened and is happening. If you do any kind of research at all you'll be flooded with evidence supporting this.
- jeffiek, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3That "bastard" was a normal young man caught up in the lunacy of war.
Not all Americans are "*****", many of us wanted no part of invading Iraq.
Some did, but the real *****, the politicians and the generals, will most likely die at home in bed. Regrettably, there is no hell.
I wonder if people ( the world over ) will ever grow up and realize that government is just a scam. Without them there could be no war. - JoeHague, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3I don't usually respond to trolls, but if you really got a hard on reading this article than you need to be committed.
Also go ***** yourself/ - sochr000, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3After I got out of the Army I initially hated those bumper stickers, but for someone like Dwyer, who'd seen things I can't begin to imagine, they do seem to help. It's like Vietnam for most of these men and women, all they see are the people who hate them for what they've done and seen while following orders. Knowing that someone cares enough to spend the $5 does help, in its own little way.
- RebornInFlames, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3God I hate people who do this......read the ***** article on the site or don't, but stop copypasting every goddamn article
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4Troll.
- BalzacOG, on 07/13/2009, -2/+5Well, it could have helped. My dad is a Korean war veteran and he's been smoking marijuana twice a day since before I was born.
A mutual friend is a Vietnam War veteran with flashbacks, liver disease from Agent Orange, and all kinds of drugs he needs to take every day. He smoked marijuana every day too.
As a matter of fact, Marijuana has remarkable properties for helping people who are being crushed by the stress of PTSD.
But the MDMA treatments are especially promising for a limited number of treatments. The marijuana makes a good daily regimen for stress management.
It's easy to forget how much it can sooth your nerves without incapacitating you or addicting you. - jack104, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3"Your soldiers." I take it your not an American....so unless your an Iraqi SHUT THE ***** UP.
