I think this is pretty much the definition of a reckless driver. This is probably why his license was also suspended. I did alot of stupid things in a car when I was young but never tried to beat a train. - jdandre, on 07/11/2009, -6/+262Did anyone else notice that the 14-year old also did not show up at home the night before - she spent the night at a "friends" house and didn't call her Mother. This is sad, and I feel sorry for all involved, but this is a MAJOR failure at the parental level. When I was 14 I would never have thought about staying out all night and not calling my parents - both my Mom and my Dad would have beaten me and grounded me for a year. Thinking back, I am pretty sure I had to be in at 11PM when I was 14, and my parents knew who I was hanging out with.
It may sound harsh, but if the parents acted like parents and played a role in their daughter's life she would have never stayed out all night or been in that car to begin with. - JFitzpatrick, on 07/11/2009, -1/+236The moral of the story kids (besides being smart enough as a 14 year old girl to not get in a car with enough older men to constitute a gang bang) is that NOBODY beats the train.
Truly. If you beat the train, you've accomplished a small feat of daring and luck and you should consider that your one moment of good fortune in life. Several years ago--my google-fu fails me--I read about a study where they took fighter pilots and put them in a driving simulator. They put the pilots, men with extraordinary reflexes entrusted with executing precise maneuvers in billion dollar machines, in a simulation where they were going to attempt to beat the train. Human perception of space is such that an large and fast moving object coming down a pair of paralleled lines apparently is just too hard to size up. . My daughter recently got her license and she has had two minor accidents in the span of two months. Looking at the bill from the towing company and the mechanic today, I was getting more and more irritated.
I read this story and I thank God there have been no injuries...
we still took her license away, but I am now thankful rather than angry!
