It only works if the person believes that it works and is intimidated into confessing to the person giving the polygraph (i.e., interrogator). If the person doesn't confess then the results are meaningless.

As inaccurate as polygraphs are, using the kinds of physical cues that rajj007 linked are even more unreliable. Studies show that people who think they're good at detecting lies really aren't any better at it than anyone else.
