- jefferygomer, on 10/31/2007, -0/+15The man has some mad chops.
Great mix of speed, precision, and visual effects. - THUMPerRTE, on 11/01/2007, -3/+17interesting...a drum corp story on digg.

- SantaPlausible, on 10/31/2007, -0/+8Quite enjoyable. I wouldn't mind seeing videos like -that- make the front page more often.
But not too often. - BMANZZS, on 10/31/2007, -1/+8Then it's a good thing the title doesn't say "most amazing".
- flammatappa, on 10/31/2007, -2/+9Former corps guy (drummer) here. I've always liked how Tim Jackson played... keeps getting better somehow.

- clorby, on 11/01/2007, -0/+5you may not realize it, but you just admitted to the entire internet that you know very little about drumming.
- nonstop87, on 10/31/2007, -0/+5He could easily be in the blue man group.
- koenigje, on 10/31/2007, -0/+5No *****! It was a joke......here's a wikipedia entry on humour. Please read.

Bushwackers '00 - robtowne, on 10/31/2007, -1/+4Seeing as you have never played tenors at a high level (probably not even high school) I will try to be kind in the following explanation. First of all, that was extremely clean with very little rim hits for his tempo and scrape difficulty (except of course the intentional ones like the four at the beginning).
Buzz rolls ARE possible on tenor drums as well as almost any other percussion instrument. "Buzz" (or "closed" or "multiple bounce") rolls are simply using tension in your fulcrum to force the stick to rapidly bounce, and going hand to hand using this method causes an almost continuous sound. Tim simply chose not to use any buzz rolls. You can see him use the buzz stroke on his left hand on his 2nd spock drum at 2:10 for effect.
A good drum solo does not necessarily have a "core beat". That is just your preference and should not be generalized. I find it more interesting that he changes tempo throughout the solo. Also, it was not a very syncopated solo, in case you are unsure.
His choice to switch drums is not random. He not only chooses to make melody using the six tones available to him, he also selects scrape patterns that are very difficult to show off his chops and technique. Scraps that go "inwards", such as from drum 4 to 2 with the left hand and 3to 1 with the right hand, are some of the hardest and he does this all around the tenors at multiple tempos and beat patterns. This is a solo competition after all.
I do agree with you on one point. DCI (Drum Corps International) always hosts great evens with some awesome musical talent in America and more people should check it out. - grobinson, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3http://www.vicfirth.com/podcasts/marching.html

- Dokument, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3the "unnecessary" part makes the "actual playing" harder.
- twodayslate, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3How does he do that?
- Nizerifin, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3The Blue Devils drumline music is much more demanding than anything a high school marching band will ever do, and it's done better regardless of difficulty.
- Dokument, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2i think he choose tenor for a reason.

- cbabraham, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2I impressed with the amount of DCI folks that came out of the wood work for this one, hopefully we can digg some more storys up like this.
- nestcrw, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2I was just thinking about what it would be like to see something DCI related on digg....seriously a few hours ago...weird.

- bimtott, on 11/01/2007, -0/+2***** blue man group. He could kick all of their asses.
- TsuruchiBrian, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2You can buzz roll a tenor. Just try it.

and nestcrw is right, that is an incredibly fast tempo to march to.
also what you have to understand is that part of drum corps is performing to please the crowd and the judges.
thats just how it works - robtowne, on 10/31/2007, -0/+1Good luck. I'm going back to cadets this year.

- Locke2053, on 10/31/2007, -4/+5Clean? These are tenors, not snares--it's impossible to buzz roll them. In addition, he caught a lot of rim accidentally. Also, a good drum solo should have SOME sort of core beat, even if it is seriously syncopated. This was just a "show of my tricks and chops as fast as possible while randomly switch drums" type of solo.
This video is great because of the extreme technical difficulty... that's the extent of it.
BTW, if you diggers have never been to a DCI event, check it out. It is one of the least known and most awesome American art forms. - Elfman, on 10/30/2007, -0/+1Ahh yes. The Capitol Freelancers (as they we re known in the day). The little corps that could.
