- murty, on 02/24/2009, -0/+66encouraging to see the positive side of the US police force :)
- DillingerSmooth, on 02/23/2009, -1/+53it's pretty crazy how these guys don't even hesitate to get into the car to help someone they don't know.....with everything bad in this world it feels great to see something good
- Chairboy, on 02/24/2009, -1/+26The vast majority of police officers here are like this. Hard working, brave, dedicated to protecting and serving.
One of the most insidious aspects of the 'War on Drugs' is that it creates situations where cops are made bad or the bad ones are given powers that bring out their worst aspects. It's almost as if the WoD is designed to create wedges between police and their communities, to train the police to see the citizens as enemies, and to strip the civilians from their best resource in case of the need for resistance against government excess.
Bravo to these officers and the hundreds of thousands like them that work each day without fame to keep us safe. - Zervaman, on 02/24/2009, -2/+21Cops really deserve more respect for what they do. Yeah, not all cops are saints, but all the cops I know are hardworking people who put their lives on the line everyday to protect and serve all of us.
And to all the haters, say what you will, but when the ***** hits the fan, you'll be dialing 911. - Brak710101, on 02/24/2009, -0/+17The second cop had to have had all his facial hair removed with that flame burst. That was really close, it looks like he only flinched and stepped back because he was being burned.
Two heroes, without a doubt. - JanK1, on 02/24/2009, -1/+16Not all cops are bad. FYI.
- sexybobo, on 02/24/2009, -0/+14The problem is the bad side is more entertaining to watch then the good side. For every ***** cop tormenting some one or hitting people there are 100 that just want to try to make the world a better place to live in.
Some one i know recently had some people snooping around her back yard she called the police who got there after the people had already gotten scared off by her dogs but the office waited around with her till i was able to show up just to try to keep her calm and let her know she is safe. It is small stuff like that that means the world to the person who they did it for but it is not news and no one would normally ever hear about it but it is what the vast majority of the law enforcement is like.
Then you have some ***** kicking skateboarders that makes them all look bad. - cupajoe60, on 02/24/2009, -1/+15He deserves a medal, or a holiday, or at least a cuddle from somebody.
- OpCzar, on 02/24/2009, -0/+12"... estimated he had 30 to 60 more seconds before he would have succumbed to the smoke inhalation"
I'm glad they didn't wait for the fire department to intervene - might not be by the book so I hope he didn't get any lip from a superior. - midbc, on 02/24/2009, -1/+9"Moments like these make me truly proud of being an American"
what the ***** does that even mean is American a state of mind or race or code of conduct
those cops are heroes though - zaren, on 02/24/2009, -0/+7To protect and to serve, indeed. Hats off to the boys in blue on this one!
- santixx, on 02/24/2009, -1/+8This kind of actions should be taken into account before saying all the cops are pigs and things like that.
They are heroes, my respect for them. - one1plus1one, on 02/24/2009, -1/+7Comparing a cook's job, to the job those police officers had to accomplish on that particular night, is a false comparison.
Such a comparison is meaningless because it could be used to devalue anyone's accomplishments.
You could say, "Should we really praise Phelps' performance in the Olympics since he just did what he was training to do for years?"
Or: "Should we really praise Pittsburgh for winning the Super Bowl, since they are professional atheletes and are paid millions and that's what they are supposed to do."
Or: "Should we really praise Einstein for discovering relativity, since his IQ was higher than average, thanks to an accident of genetics, and he spent years training his mind and simulating the universe..., so it's only natural and to be expected that he would cough up something brilliant."
So, if you really want to de-value anyone's accomplishments it's easy to do with that type of argument. - kngserious, on 02/24/2009, -1/+7The second cop's the real hero. He immediately ran for the door and pulled the guy out.
- waluum, on 02/24/2009, -1/+6Remember this genuine and undeniable act of heroism the next time you even think about applying any general criticism to all police officers, Digg! What has come our way has made the corruption, the lawlessness, and the disregard for human life among a very small percentage of law enforcement officers apparent, but you can be damn certain that men like these make up the highest majority of the men in blue!
God bless these public servants for their selflessness and service to their communities! - inactive, on 02/24/2009, -3/+8in before cop-haters start trolling this thread
- one1plus1one, on 02/24/2009, -0/+5Agreed. Last summer I was in downtown Montreal during the "hockey riots" and I saw Montreal police being heavily targetted.
I saw people throwing beer bottles at them, insulting them, spitting on them, and still the cops didn't do much.
The police had actually aired commercials prior to the celebrations, telling people to enjoy the victory celebrations, have fun, and celebrate, but just not to get carried away. They specifically said they didn't want to intervene and ruin the fun.
But when people started flipping over cop cars and setting them on fire, and smashing windows and grabbing shoes and electronics, that's the moment I saw the cops intervene.
I think there is a certain automatic and innate hatred for cops and authority figures, especially if you are in your teens, and your hormones are raging and you feel "programmed to rebel". I felt it too back then.
Imagine if you were a police officer who risked your life (as these 2 gentlemen did) and the next week, you are at some sports celebrations being spit on, and cursed.
Most cops like these guys just take it and shrug it off. These are the good cops and there are more of them then we think. - one1plus1one, on 02/24/2009, -0/+4He deserves a cuddle from two hot chick's simultaneously.
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -1/+5I'll be calling a plumber
- Zervaman, on 02/24/2009, -2/+6A hero is a hero, regardless of what their vocation is.
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -1/+5Guys, I don't mean that only Americans are capable of heroism... It's just that over the last couple of years, I've been ashamed of being an American.
Look at us... When I think of America... I think of greed, ignorance, and selfishness. Moments like these make me see the better side. I see hope, courage, bravery and truly great people.
And if you guys didn't notice, the site the video is on is called GreatAmericans.com, so I thought that comment would be fitting :) - DynamicBits, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3You'd be surprised how much hair can remain, even after second and third degree burns to the skin. With a small flare up like that, the flinching is often just a reaction to the sight of the flames, rather than a reaction to pain. The real pain might not start until 5-15 minutes later. (Side note: while you're waiting for the real painkillers, nothing is better than washcloths soaked in cold water.)
But yea, those guys are heroes. - TubaTechno, on 02/24/2009, -0/+3That is a false statement. And a logical fallacy.
- emptyo, on 02/24/2009, -1/+4That was amazing. the fact that the first guy instantly broke the window and thought to check it with complete disregard of his own safety was absolutely heroic. And the fact that the car was engulfed mere seconds after they pulled the kid out was also unbelieveable. I wonder how the kid fared afterword?
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -1/+4Wow Kitakaze, that had to be about the poorest analogy I've seen here on Digg.
- acegi, on 02/24/2009, -2/+4say what you will about cops. you still need 'em.
- rnawky, on 02/24/2009, -4/+6They left out the part where they tazed the guy from the car because he was being uncooperative
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -1/+3Not everyone on Digg is a malcontent, childish cop basher.
- freakFlag, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2People from Poland are going to be on you like the smell from cabbage soup.
- rxbudian, on 02/24/2009, -1/+3Kudos to the officers !!!
- Kitakaze, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2Even better — most people on Digg aren't infantile, hung-like-a-baby-carrot cop wannabes who'd happily suck off the entire LAPD if they were allowed to fondle a service gun, either...
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2It was an illegal search. The driver who was trapped inside the car should sue the zealous cops clearly abusing their power.
- Bigzz, on 07/22/2009, -0/+1Nope - front page of CNN riht now
- bloominoctober, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1KILL IT WITH .... ah, ***** it.
- shadowspawn, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1we need the good side videos. yes almost all cops are *****, but sometimes ***** are needed to help people, especially when bigger ***** are behind the trigger/knife/car.
so what if a cop is an *****, and that's all he is and knows? he follows a job line. yea i don't like it, but they aren't hired as saints.
the only difference between a cop and a criminal is a badge. sometimes you need that. but when they get power hungry, they gotta pay. like any other criminal. - banderwocky, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1Hahah a GM car! Go figure. No wonder these guys are going bankrupt!
- Bigzz, on 07/22/2009, -0/+1The movie is a lesson in how important it is to issue clear commands in an emergency. Instead of delegating tasks (you: call 911; you: get a hose; you: get to that house and grab a knife) in order to precipitate an orderly and efficient response, you had two heroes risking their lives inside the burning car while a bunch of other people stood around outside flipping ***** - including the ass behind the camera who didn't do anything except yell useless *****. Thank God lives were saved and bless those who did what they could. But take note should you ever be in a similar position.
- shadowspawn, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1i'll be calling my friend with my shotgun in one hand and my ump in the other. ***** the cops. nothing that teflon-coated lead can't stop.
- terencec, on 02/24/2009, -1/+2thank god for those brave souls
- TheHIV, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1Woo! Ames represent! ...Oh god, I can't believe I just said that...
- Lemonion, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1Pontiac Fiero
- inactive, on 02/24/2009, -1/+2The big difference in your scenarios is assigned risk. The cop risked injury by doing his job, if you consider pulling people from a burning car his job.
Frankly I'd like to think most people, coming across a situation like this, would perform the same selfless act. - inactive, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1Probably drunk and passed out.
- BlackKnight6, on 02/24/2009, -1/+2He said had the guy stayed in the car 30-60 MORE seconds from the time he was removed he would have died.
- TheHIV, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1Ya, it happened a year ago or so, not exactly sure when.
- poopdigger, on 02/24/2009, -2/+3But too many are.
- codyjohnle, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1kitakaze. you're making the same point you were dugg down for higher up in the comments.
what is your point exactly? if we are not to commend someone for a brave act what are we supposed to do? - oatmeals, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1Yeah, your logic is very flawed. As first responders, the police have the responsibility to keep themselves safe in any situation. What good is it to rush in and become incapacitated and put even more people at risk?
The cop went beyond his call of duty to check the car a second time. Simple as that. - Kitakaze, on 02/24/2009, -1/+2@codyjohnle, don't be obtuse, you know what my point is: Certain professions are inherently dangerous. By carrying out your professional duty (for which you volunteered, were trained for and are rewarded for) means putting yourself in harm's way. This includes cops. It also includes professions that are far more dangerous — such as delivering a ***** pizza. When's the last time you saw one of those poor bastards get a funeral with the fanfare of a cop's? Not to speak of the difference in salary, pension, health and other benefits... There's no such thing as a hero. That is just infantile ***** that helps sell news to saps.
There are ***** and psychopaths who wouldn't piss in your mouth if your teeth were on fire — and then there are decent human beings who're willing to lend a hand, even if it may put themselves in danger.
I'd say these cops proved themselves to be decent human beings on this occasion. And I'm glad to see it; good for them. That's all. - bitterbug, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1I believe flames belching into the air could be considered "probable cause".
