- Chompy, on 04/15/2009, -3/+76Dear everyone who worked together to save the world in WW2: Thanks.
Love,
Your Grandkids - jaydubdub, on 04/15/2009, -0/+49this is a powerful image and a good reminder that many of the seniors of today were the heroes of yesterday...
- psyclonic, on 04/15/2009, -1/+42wife's father was on this boat when it got hit. he was one of the guys who abandoned ship. more men died that day on this vessel than at any time before or since in the history of the US Navy.
the Franklin is an amazing story. - trentrezn0r, on 04/15/2009, -1/+35That doesn't even make any sense.
- GVR90, on 04/15/2009, -2/+32I can only imagine the guts that our guys (US/Canadian/Brits etc) had back in the day.. my hat is off to them. These days instead we have people suing because they spilled coffee on their laps.
- DeskFlyer, on 04/15/2009, -0/+24I can't believe that this ship managed to make it all of the way back to NYC under its own power for repairs, despite losing over half its crew members.
- WordsnCollision, on 04/14/2009, -2/+24Scratch one flat-top... NOT!
- Janinco, on 04/14/2009, -2/+24Awesome picture. Thanks for posting!
- danwallace, on 04/15/2009, -1/+21That's probably because it wasn't a joke, genius.
- amcnair, on 04/15/2009, -0/+20Funny, I didn't see that at all in that picture. You must have some amazing powers of observation.
- memper, on 04/15/2009, -2/+18Way to disgrace the lives of the people lost by twisting it into your own ephemeral partisan agenda.
Classy. - nemothewhale, on 04/15/2009, -2/+18This has been on Digg since 1945!
- janeuner, on 04/15/2009, -0/+15The Arizona and the Indianapolis would like to have a word.
- Chompy, on 04/15/2009, -0/+15Settle down, Francis.
- sensor, on 04/15/2009, -0/+15There's just so many things wrong with that statement.... I can't be bothered.
- centran, on 04/15/2009, -1/+16and there would be no jews. but who needs the jews anyway. I heard those bastards caused 9/11
- bratterscain, on 04/15/2009, -0/+14History. Do you know it?
- Portwineboy, on 04/15/2009, -0/+14I believe you are mistaken. The heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis was sunk by enemy action in the Philippine Sea with 1,196 casualties, every man aboard. Casualties on the USS Franklin were by no means low, but were less, with 724 killed and 265 wounded. The Franklin did suffer the most severe damage of any fleet carrier that survived the war though. My grandfather served on one of the Pacific fleet destroyers, USS Gwin.

- graemee, on 04/15/2009, -2/+11Go to the Netherlands and say that, boy.
- memper, on 04/15/2009, -3/+11I know many people died here. But, I can't think of anything to say, maybe a pause of silence is all that's needed. - what an astonishing photo.
- rjey, on 04/15/2009, -0/+7@quee you really need to learn to control yourself before going off like a raving lunatic with a rant that has nothing to do with WW2.
- ThreeE, on 04/15/2009, -0/+7@Queef: This is a picture of an American aircraft carrier -- not a japanese aircraft carrier.
- commentposted, on 04/14/2009, -5/+12How do you digg 78 articles per day?
- richmomz, on 04/15/2009, -2/+8Older than the Internet! /s
Props to our grandparents and great-grandparents who fought in this war - this picture is just a reminder of the horror that they willingly confronted so that their kids and grandkids won't have to (hopefully). - Kriegskamerad, on 04/15/2009, -1/+7Stop arguing over who did what, and which nation did the most. It was the people who fought for our freedom. It was the collective effort of the people of the UK, USA, USSR, the Common Wealth, and the numerous underground movements around Europe. To downplay what any of the people did no matter which nation they came from is disrespectful and selfish.
- jhkoenig, on 04/15/2009, -1/+7Coincidentally, my wife's father was also on the Franklin when it was "sunk", both times. He spent a day and a half in the ocean with a few of his mates before being rescued after the second sinking. Quite a ship with an amazing crew of brave men.

- ratamaq, on 04/15/2009, -2/+7Don't lie. It's every restaurant... Damn Canadians.
- Igrift, on 04/15/2009, -2/+7Ummm, it was the Japanese who attacked this ship. On the flip side the Japanese don't really like the Chinese so NOT tipping well at pf changs means you support this atatck!
- topcat5, on 04/15/2009, -3/+7The Franklin was a Essex class aircraft carrier. These ships were built to take a beating and had a lot of innovations to prevent fires and fuel explosions during attack. The crews were also well trained in damage control They were far superior in that regard than compared to the carriers the Japanese had which typically would be completely destroyed by one bomb.
Read up on the Battle of Midway where just 3 Essex class aircraft carriers, including the already damaged Yorktown, destroyed the much larger Japanese aircraft carrier fleet. On paper the Japanese fleet looked invincible. It was nice payback for Pearl Harbor which this same fleet had attacked. - Defiant001, on 04/15/2009, -1/+5Buried for your uneducated "and wtf, Canada? looool" remark, why don't you go pick up a history textbook before you insult my country..
- jerintate, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4Video of the bombing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTAViMX-w6c - OutlawSundown, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4The Carriers at midway weren't Essex class they were all older careers that predated the war.
The USS Yorktown (CV-5), USS Hornet (CV-8), and USS Enterprise (CV-6) were earlier Yorktown class carriers that were built in the 30s. The first Essex class carrier was launched a month after the battle of Midway.
- Sepeteus, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4That's funny. My wife's father was on Franklin... Hey wait a minute... Does your wife go on business trips often too? I smell polygamy here.
- inactive, on 04/15/2009, -2/+6Against the Japanese, no, the USSR did very little against the Japanese. It was mostly US/China effort.
- decker12, on 04/15/2009, -4/+8This would have never happened if Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen aboard the USS Nimitz prevented Pearl Harbor.
- DPDish12, on 04/15/2009, -1/+5That statement is almost as stupid as the original comment.
- janeuner, on 04/15/2009, -0/+4~300 of the Indianapolis crew survived.
Wait, you said casualties. Sorry, carry on... - Cojafoji, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3Thank god for all the men and women that served in the pacific theater during that war (and to those that served in Europe, Africa and the CBI). Awesome picture, and thank you for posting it.
- garhent, on 04/15/2009, -3/+6The USSR also did most of the dying as well. And they would not have entered the war if they hadn't made a pact with the devil and agreed not to fight. Hitler betrayed the Soviets and invaded bringing in the USSR to the war. Looking at the Pacific theater the only thing the Soviets did was to capture Sakhilan from an almost defeated Japanese.
I've always went with the work (fight) smarter not work harder (die). The soviets developed new and innovative ways of sending their own people on occasion needlessly to die for WWII. - kreegah, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3Good naval architecture, huge balls, and superb damage control skillz will out.
- poog99, on 04/15/2009, -0/+3Seriously, man...get a ***** clue and go back to grade school
- sorenb, on 04/15/2009, -0/+2The greatest generation...
- inactive, on 04/15/2009, -1/+3Gentlemen, please! There's not fighting in the war room.
