- Fountainhead76, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5Isn't it Katrina not Katarina?
- cleovii, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5102 is a lot of great-grandkids.
- ScotchInBox, on 11/21/2008, -2/+7I know I'm going to get blasted for this but...
- without a doubt - Katrina was a horrible tragedy and I absolutely empathize with people that have to struggle, suffer, and grind their way way back to some sort of semblance of normality
- that being said - I think these photos are totally lame- something that anybody with a $50 camera can walk up to someone and say "let me take your picture". The photos are boring and "low hanging fruit" and how this made the front page is beyond me. There are so many more ways a photographer could really tell a compelling story, but this was way too Walmart for me.
- the other content on the website however is very cool. - thedarkrabbit, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5These photos are nice and all, but they only show some people at their trailors a year later... they do nothing to show the severe lack of help received by the people.
I went to Biloxi 18 months after Katrina to help. There were still houses missing, things detroyed that had yet to be touched by FEMA or anyone.
I took some photos as well, and not to be a self-serving douche, but they can be seen here: http://thedarkrabbit.deviantart.com/gallery/#Missi ... - crackerXcore, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4im from biloxi where the hurricane hit, most people have their houses fixed or got new ones, life is normal again there for almost everyone. All of the destroyed coastal property is being turned into condo's and casinos. The economy and wages are good too, Fast food is paying over $8
- thelastcivilian, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Here's another gem: ' "It was beautiful fivve-bedroom house", she sais.'
Obviously this photog isn't much of a speller. - david468, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4Forgive me, but if his family did earn their money then it does belong to them.
Did they not earn it? - MeatyMcBeef, on 11/21/2008, -0/+4I went to New Orleans as part of a rebuilding program and did so around the time insurance companies were finally writing the checks. Louisiana has a fairly poor education system and a high rate of poverty, so when people got this money many times they did not make the wisest choices with it. We would see people living out of FEMA trailers driving brand new $35,000 trucks or spending the money on.
It's sad but many parts of New Orleans look like this still today. - GeeksSpeakFont, on 11/20/2008, -1/+4i like that carl lozier guy
- camilos007, on 11/21/2008, -3/+6"Swanson says her oldest daughter, who is 16, just found out she's pregnant"
I feel sorry for their loss, but the tragedy that was Katrina is no excuse for being stupid. What the hell is wrong with these people? No money, no education, no home, no prospects. What do they do? They get pregnant 3 months after hitting puberty! Hooray for the cycle of stupidity and poverty! - cheekdog, on 11/21/2008, -0/+3i'm from biloxi also....these pics are a year after. but when i went after christmas to visit my parents there were still trailer parks there. everything i grew up with was gone.
- awwsnap, on 11/21/2008, -1/+3hooray for Digg not knowing when females begin puberty at all!
remember that education leads to proper understanding of things such as birth control. also remember that many teenagers lack the cognitive skills to accurately understand consequences, especially when coupled with something as difficult to control as sexual desire. - greatgatsbyII, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2Agreed. The progress on the coast is leaps and bounds ahead of New Orleans.
- lynchjo, on 11/20/2008, -1/+3Thank you for these portraits as a testimony to these folks living conditions...
- ScotchInBox, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2nice
- hwy9nightkid, on 11/21/2008, -0/+2thank God the Rolls is safe
- anachronaut, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1It's not just New Orleans, I'm afraid -- that's Louisiana in general. In my hometown in northern Louisiana, depending on the section of town you were in -- white or black, as it was strongly divided along racial lines -- you could see ridiculous pimp-mobiles parked in front of ramshackle shotgun shacks (lights shining through the gaps in the walls and everything) or tricked-out lowrider trucks parked in front of beat-up, dingy trailers with a yard full of trash.
I can definitely understand not wanting to waste money on your property when you live in such a horrendous ***** to begin with -- it's not like having a granite countertop or fresh paint is going to improve your property value when you live 5 feet away from a crackhouse -- but it seems like the wiser choice would be to save your money so you can get the hell OUT of there rather than fritter it away on ridiculous ***** like neon lights or spinning rims or whatever the hell else you'd customize a vehicle with. - billwild, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Hes over my house making my breakfast. Bender get me my coffee!
- Wholekernalcorn, on 11/21/2008, -1/+2Wow...some of these people live better than a few billion people. Where did that guy get that new blue Mercedes?
- samsonthesaxman, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1sharp pics, hats off
- Tbro, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1And it's been over 3 years since Katrina hit. I was born and raised in Pascagoula and now live in Jackson, MS
- The_Red_Monkey, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Yes, its up to the government to step in and fix everything when we fail to have insurance. The government should take care of us from the cradle to the grave so that we do not have to think or do anything for ourselves. Now where is my arse wiping robot when I need him.
- worseforwine, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1What does it mean when a woman's 3 kids all look different with different features and hair colors?
- greatgatsbyII, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1yep and he left it parked there outside his trailer. He's got a house now and I haven't seen it so I guess it's in the garage.
- darkcooger, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1I'm sorry for you having to live in Jackson.
- darkcooger, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1My reaction to that was to say "Good God Almighty" aloud, and then send that little text blurb to all of my co-workers. The sentiment was echoed.
- rekrapt, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1I'm in Gulfport, right next to Biloxi. People are mostly moving on except for the people that were on welfare before the hurricane. My neighborhood crime rate went down immediately after they removed the FEMA trailer park they had replace the baseball fields with at the end of the street. There are plenty of jobs... mostly service oriented, but overall, the MS coast is going to be mainly the state port of Gulfport, the casino/hotel/condo industry, service jobs (fast food, etc.) and some banks and attorneys. We're moving as soon as we can get out of here. No place to raise a family.
- billwild, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Some people I just dont get....one picture shows a guy sitting there complaining about no help. While he may be right how about he starts helping himself and quit pissing away his money smoking.
And dont get me started about the 16 year old pregnant girl. - darkcooger, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Disregard my post. Nice pics.
- hwy9nightkid, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1people have sex.
- WileyK, on 11/21/2008, -0/+0That Rolls is gorgeous. As shallow as this sounds I'm glad that made it through.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -1/+1Way too many spelling errors throughout the captions and even in the title to be taken seriously without even mentioning the lackluster pictures and having either the sky or trailer overexposed in every picture. I seriously doubt this is a photojournalist. Captions shouldn't tell more of the story than the actual pictures themselves.
- algaeturd, on 11/21/2008, -2/+2Awesome set. Everyone needs to be reminded that many of these people are still just barely getting by. Yes, they're lucky they got out with their lives but there still isn't much down there for some who have no way to get out of the FEMA trailers (that make people sick, by the way.)
- vardis, on 12/12/2008, -0/+0It's fair to say that some people just can't or won't help themselves - but they expect others to help them.
- letsriot, on 11/21/2008, -0/+0I'm from the delta and it sucks. Home of the blues.
- worseforwine, on 11/21/2008, -1/+1I'm not from biloxi but i'm a fan of your blues.
- billmdee, on 11/21/2008, -1/+0Judging from many of the pictures, when the rebuild their houses, they should make them the same way they made the front steps.
- musicxisxlifex, on 11/21/2008, -2/+1those pictures are beautiful. they show all the emotion the people hold, my favorite is the two with the cats and the guys with his car
- Autodidaddict, on 11/21/2008, -2/+0Is driving around your neighborhood in your '64 Rolls Royce that somehow survived the storm while watching your neighbors try to rebuild their shattered lives the most d-bag thing to do ever?
*****, whatever I'd do it too if I had a Rolls....... - Duffle, on 11/21/2008, -3/+1Yes. Yes I did. (I secretly enjoy a good argument when I know I'm right)
- Autodidaddict, on 11/21/2008, -3/+0They probably drove it. A lot of people evacuated the area hence they have their cars....just not their houses.
Or he scammed FEMA like thousands did. Either way, baller car. Too bad you live in a trailer now buddy. - Rikkochet, on 11/21/2008, -4/+1You argued with someone who believes that?
I wish I had your patience. - Duffle, on 11/21/2008, -8/+2*****, this pisses me off because I was talking about the election with a former classmate who lives in Texas now. He said Obama would take away the hard earned money of rich people like him and give it to the poor who are too lazy to get a job. I guess he never saw this. (Spoiled, spoon-fed 15-year-old, what do you expect?)
