- violentvinyl, on 10/11/2007, -20/+160I wish my lawn was Emo so it would cut itself.
- cr4ft, on 10/11/2007, -5/+87I hope I never grow up to be as stupid as these adults
- screamthenrun, on 10/11/2007, -4/+83i'm sorry-- i didnt realize that an orange polo shirt qualified as 'emo'
- orientis, on 10/11/2007, -2/+76Replace emo with goth and flash back to ten years ago. People just don't learn.
- falch69, on 10/11/2007, -11/+73Emo sucks, ***** emo, it ruined spider-man.
- wraptor347, on 10/11/2007, -3/+45they sure do their part in making this sound like an epidemic
- christopheles, on 10/11/2007, -1/+38That was just about the funniest reporting of parody as news that I've ever seen.
- grenden, on 10/11/2007, -1/+36Solved for myself, from ABC4's website.

print article - orientis, on 10/11/2007, -6/+38openfuture: You're wrong, it is a bad thing to do. Out of the millions of emo kids (god I hate them) only a tiny percentage will cut themselves, and even then a large majority will just be doing it to seem cool or fit into the subculture. Teenage depression is a problem, emo is, in part, a reflection of this problem. Instead of wondering why teenagers might be depressed (look at the world! if you're not depressed there's something wrong with you!) they push focus on to music and clothing style.
It's ignorant and stupid, it doesn't help and in fact makes things worse. How cliched is the phrase "You don't understand me!" when coming from a teenager? Do you think this news report will help parents understand what their kids are doing? Or will it perhaps give them a bunch of ideas that are simply incorrect? - inhaler, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24You mean bad boy symbiote Peter Parker was emo? I was wondering why he had that hair parted to one side. Listen here parents, emo makes your kids into black suit spidey. They'll be throwing tantrums in jazz clubs in no time.
- LordHelmet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19It's like Goth only cooler
/sarcasm - Tenlow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+19I like how they actually used part of the "must be emo" video in their report.
- ACrazyGerman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18LOL@ the Death Cab song in the backround.
- OpenFuture, on 10/11/2007, -9/+27Looking at that guy's arm was quite disturbing. Even if they do try to make it sound like an epidemic to get parents attention, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing to do. Some of these kids need help and even if all emo kids aren't self destructive it's still good to alert the public to what might be going on.
- unicronband, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Clear Channel is so emo.
- ShawnHunt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16"Advanced Emo kids cut themselves."
I didn't realize there was a scale... What do Grand Master Emo kids do? - mrblonde314, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17at least they're not scientologists
- CanceledCzech, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16"The Emo Song" FTW at 1:00.
And the "How to be EMO" video at around 1:20
Don't they know that those are parodies? - nullx42, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Lack of an unpredictable plot ruined spiderman.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15"even in spider-man 3"
wasn't it called goth a couple of months ago? - chicken101, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13so if my kids cut themselves, I should take them to the hospital! SHOCKING!
- macbwizard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I find it ironic that most of the kids who are emo seem to be trying to be non-conformist.
- tamurlane6, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Seriously! Who the ***** stole my Goth and slapped an orange polo on it!? Bastards!
- wingo123, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Wow - people still refer to themselves as 'Emo'? I feel like I've been transported to 1995. I guess they are in Utah...
- CraigJ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10"ABC has no idea what they are doing or saying in this news report" - this applies to 90% of all broadcast news...
- PresidentGas, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10@shaunhunt
They're all dead. - davidhildreth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9"in this song a man sings about killing himself after the death of a loved one"
yea, that song is definitely emo
.... i guess so is romeo and juliet - diald, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9how many emo kids does it take to screw in a light bulb?
***** it, let them cry in the dark - feebie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I like Death Cab For Cutie, but I've never considered them to be Emo.
One day I was talking to a friend who was adamant about Death Cab's "emo-ness" that, all of their songs are written purely with emotion, and that he refuses to listen to anyone with their heart on their sleeve. If this is the only requirement for bands/musicians to be emo, let me list some other "emo" artists:
Johnny Cash
Marilyn Manson
Whitney Houston
Simon and Garfunkel...
you know, the list could go on forever. Most songs are written in an emotional light. A lot songs are about broken hearts and love lost, pain and suffering. But that doesn't make them "Emo". Emo is actually a style of punk rock music that was started in the 1980's, and hardly sounds anything like the bands today that are refered to as Emo bands. The term "Emo" is now a slang word derived from that type of punk rock music.
If anything, the Emo culture of today is a modified version of the Goth culture from the 90's, and if I remember correctly, it was mostly tongue-in-cheek. - inhaler, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Mustive been a slow day for the 24 hour news networks. We slowly boil away our ice caps in C02 saturated waters while we wage a war on a concept that in reality the majority of Americans assume the only reason to do so is to make companies like KBR and Halliburton even wealthier and all the while destroying ourselves on diets of cola with Benzene and RBGH infused milk, coupled with colon cancer promoting red meat and hydrogenated fats, waiting for Jesus to show up and bring all the believers who fail to show tolerance/benevolence/unconditional love like he would have wanted back to heaven.
I can't imagine they've run out of more important things to talk about. - Ngai, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Emo stands for emotional.
Emo kids are emotional kids...
Emo kids need help...
Emo kids want attention...
Emo kids are emo like us all...
Emo kids are teenagers...
Emo is just a phase... - tehnico, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8http://www.abc4.com/mediacenter/local.aspx?videoId=65333
- ekleinunt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8ABC 4 Salt Lake City != ABC News
- grinndaddy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8@Skaughty: != means "not equal to"
- designerjoe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7This is all thrown out of context. Did they think that depression, cutting, wearing dark clothing, aggressive emotional music just started because of "emo". I can't believe they say at the end "this boy exhibits traits of emo.." wtf. He exhibits traits of clinical depression. Depression knows all personality types and classes.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Whow knew there were than many fans of Emo Philips these days!
- grenden, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6http://www.abc4.com/mediacenter/local.aspx?videoId=65333
you obviously didn't read through all the comments very well. - abandonedhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Unfortunately, I live in Utah. I was shocked at this whole segment. Since when did this kind of thing become newsworthy on a channel like ABC?
- kahlessreborn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I think the definition of EMO changes by region, just like Rap, Rock, and every other part of culture.
Plus these guys have no idea what EMO is. - unicronband, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Oh god no. Scientolog-emo!
- JnOrris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5***** Clear Channel already took it down...
- minorthreat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6hahaha this is hilarious.... I was the group of kids one step older than the emo kids. When I started seeing the freshman at college dress like girls, I couldn't help but laugh. In my high school/early college days, I was just as much a rebel as these kids. But I didn't complain about it. Thats what all these "EMOtional" kids are about. Instead of listening to music that does nothing but bitch and whine about broken hearts and how uncool you are.... Why don't you guys listen to some real ***** that makes you want to stand up, fight and do something about it...
avail, sick of it all, h20.....
sigh.... all the kids are gonna grow up to be pansy's - lukas88, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8I dunno, deathcab is pretty emo. Whiney voice, emphasis on how the singer "feels," subject that has to do with dying/love.
from the song:
"There is nothing to cry about because we will hold each other soon (in the blackest of rooms)"
Yeah, emo. - diggfish, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5The video wasn't really removed by youtube, it was depressed and killed itself...
- cjswerve, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5This comment was really funny the first time it was posted. Do you need attention? Are you Emo, i don't want you to cut yourself over this?
- ScrumFritter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5That was hilarious. I couldn't help but laugh when he mentioned Spidey 3.
- Lax32, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5They identified the problem... now they have to tell us how to get rid of them.
- drouk1556, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I kind of resent the references to Death Cab. They have some depressing songs, but I equate "emo" to something a bit more extreme.
- cbdgr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4you know he could have been asking the question and he did not see before he posted as the page is not realtime...
- primetime485, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Sweet. Thanks grenden.
