Ok, its not for everyone, and you have to have extreme confidence in your partner as well and know the motivation behind it up front. Rule of thumb is if you're wanting to do that because something is missing in the relationship instead of just wanting to add to it, then DON'T do it. Let me stress that. DON'T do it. But otherwise, man it really has sparked us up even more (but we weren't bored with the relationship to begin with, so maybe thats the reason it worked for us), with or without our third.

My advice to friends who are getting into serious relationships is always the same. Evaluate the relationship like you would a business partnership. Can you trust them? Do their strengths complement your weaknesses? Do you have shared objectives? Will you be more successful in life with them than you would on your own? If you wouldn't commit to a business relationship with this person why would you ever consider the more serious proposition of marriage?
Of course, there are other things to consider, like physical attraction, friends/family, etc. but those factors are typically more obvious and there will be plenty of people giving their opinions on them.
