- radicaldementia, on 10/12/2007, -12/+107oh please, I can do that...
*snap* - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -22/+85Call me cynical, but until I see a video of him actually getting into position, I call this a fake. No digg.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35Wow! This proves it! A guy from Hong Kong says it's real!
- sbutcher, on 10/12/2007, -32/+57i'm not really convinced by this, his fingertip was hardly bending under the weight . you don't see how he got there, and even still, there's a lot can be done with wires - look at crouching tiger...
notice they don't show his feet much - Xoligy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24I'll be happy if I can stand on 1 foot at 70.
- Syntaxis, on 10/12/2007, -29/+49Let him cure cancer, THAT will impress me. What good is standing on your finger?
1.- It's not really effective, standing on two feet is much more stable;
2.- It's not really entertaining, I'd much rather watch monks fight in kung-fu movies;
3.- Room for improvement, let him do it on his pinky and hop around. - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23After watching some of those monks break spears in half by putting the pointy end on their neck and thrusting it against the floor with tremendous force, I'll believe this.
Here's a wikipedia page on him, if you want, as well:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hai_Teng - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22I'm from Hong Kong as well and we have wires in everydamn movie! This is a total scam, I could stand on the tip of my tongue whilst doing pushups if wires were holding my feet.
Dugg it anyway :) - ween, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14The camera could even be upside down, meaning that he is actually standing. I did notice that his shirt was flipped up a bit, but nothing that couldn't be sewn to make it look more realistic. I just have hard time believing he could have 90% of his body weight on one finger and show no signs of strain.
- stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14I can read your mind using my psychic abilities. You know it's real because my ability has a name.
- jadzor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Apparently David Copperfield is the only person in the world to walk through the great wall of china too
- Desertfox, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16It's actually not fake. Shaolin Master Shi Hai Deng is considered one of the best martial artists of the 20th century. His mastering of the Shaolin kung fu style allows him to manipulate his chi and perform stunts like this.
http://www.shaolinwushu.be/html/shaolin_kungfu_haideng.htm
Page is in Belgian, but translate it if you want to learn more - xavihax0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@masamunecyrs
actually just about anyone can do the trick of breaking a spear by in the way you described. Its a common trick used by motivational speakers, as as long as the point is dulled there is relatively no pain unles you stop pushing. See Penn & Teller "Bull$hit!" for more information - kevin.gc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Maybe you could do it too, if you were as light as him. That guy looked seriously skinny.
- SpeckledJim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"you don't see how he got there"
The guy was about 70 at the time - looks good for it, but wouldn't be surprised if someone had to lift him into position. - Eltrkbrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That's nothing compared to Iron Penis Qigong...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFfhxVmdXZ4&mode=related&search= - noneloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I find it convenient that his shoes don't show much, and what is shown is attached to the wall. I also find it highly convenient that his other arm is running straight up and goes perfectly where that corner is....a great place to hide a support.
- CaptainRotundo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Sorry but your explanation assumes that "chi" is real. You can't provide evidence for something using a concept that is more suspect than the act in question. I will believe someone can balance on a single finger much more easily than that he can manipulate some mystical life-force that can't be measured and hasn't been shown to exist scientifically.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10He mightn't cure cancer, but when shared with others, the stillness of mind his practice requires would certainly go a long way toward curing wars...
- ScottAG, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16So, this is why China wanted Hong Kong; for it's wire stunt technology!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I have the actual video tape of this, a lot of the stuff on the video is prepared before hand but some of the stuff the monks do is amazing. They dedicate their whole life and some never leave the monastery to do this sort of stuff.
- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I wanna know what the guy with the big hammer was gonna do right at the end
- xeomage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Ah yes: Belgian. The language of Kung Fu masters everywhere...
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6for it is what?
- borchard76, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I don't know if this is fake--I can't look at videos at work.
What I do know is that my sensei (Shao-Lin Do) swore that he had known an old (ancient, even) yoga master who could (and had seen the guy do it). It's been a few years since I spoke with him, but I think it may actually be possible even if this guy isn't doing it. It is, after all, a matter of balance and muscle strength.
So, all you crying "fake!"--it may or may not be, but that doesn't change whether or not it is actually possible. - candiru, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9i think its even more amazing that he's seventy. he looks great.
- bugfaceuk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8My wife can stand on one finger. Then, if I don't buy her what she wants, she'll even jump up and down on it as well.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6if you look at his finger, it looks pretty messed up, and slightly bent as you would expect... its not *that* amazing in a strictly physical sense, what IS amazing however is the restraint and calmness with which he meets the challenge.
I've got no problems whatsoever calling this legit. - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Pretty cool, but I'd be more impressed if he could shoot fireballs from his hands.
- Phatt138, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I also don't like that he was leaning against the wall.
*grin* I know it's a little silly, but I was picturing him perfectly upright on one finger while I waited for the clip to play... - stubadub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I find it very easy to believe that your sensei flicked chopsticks into styrofoam across the room. I believe you when you say your sensei was "damn near telepathic" because I can accept that he was an intelligent man that understood the nature of people. When you say your high school lit teacher's girlfriend could actually listen to your thoughts I have to call ***** on you.
Ask yourself why these people who claim to have extraordinary abilities are unable to prove these abilities in controlled circumstances. Ask why when anyone has attempted to make such a proof they have never demonstrated anything better than chance. Ask why no one has gone out of their way to prove such a thing when there are people offering cash rewards of one million dollars to anyone that can prove such a thing in a controlled environment. Ask yourself how many times you personally have known what someone was thinking or feeling based on your knowledge of their current situation and their body language. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9That is amazing on cheesy kung-fu movie proportions.
- Zadkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He was leaning on the wall!!
- Jarasmen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Hmmm, weird. They've shown some kids from the Shaolin temple stand on three and two fingers (with getting up and down and all) on Discovery channel. They've said that the last monk who could do the one-finger technique died like 50 years ago or something. This one seems fake to me, this videoclip is too convient for him.
- raindogmx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I agree. And if you read where the subtitles are going it looks like good ol' nationalist propaganda. "Pride of China"
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I digg it, but I won't believe it until some old geezer gets down and does it in front of me. Video is too easily faked.
- shtonkalot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So someone you know said that someone he knew that was "ancient" (but I guess still alive when the sensei was capable of remembering events) and a yoga master could do this..?
I'm not crying "fake!" but I don't see your comment as helpful to those that have a hard time believing. - buspbp, on 10/12/2007, -15/+17Absolutely FAKE!
Why did they show him making all the kung-fuing preparation but couldn't or didn't want to show how he actually got into the position?
No Digg - Inaccurate instead !!! - artman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know one thing. Chuck Norris could spin that monk like a top with his roundhouse kick.
/IT'S REAL! - NerdyNinja, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Naming it doesn't make it real.
However, I believe that something like this is possible - I've seen plenty of "impossible" things done purely through focus. The mind has ultimate control over the body, just most of us don't know how to unlock the full extent of these abilities.
I used to have a taekwondo sensei who would sit across the room from blocks of styrofoam blocks, and he would flick *chopsticks* across the room and into the blocks of styrofoam. Last I talked to him, he was working on doing it blindfolded. The man's damn near telepathic, too. And one of my most fondly remembered high school lit teachers had a girlfriend who could literally listen to your thoughts. It was genuinely creepy. Obviously, it was just impossible to lie to this woman, so I take it my teacher had it kind of rough. - p_o_b, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I stood on one finger all the time as a kid. Granted it was my brother's finger, but still...
- phenolholic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i'm not impressed. a great portion of his bodyweight is supported by the wall. no support and now we have something
- whistles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is totally real, i have a chinese docu that contains more about this fellow. I had a hard time believing the feats by thse fellows, till i saw another docu by national geo that confirmed all i had seen before. Amazing stuff.
- CopyNinja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dude that ***** is crazy... im not sure if i believe it though.
- synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I wonder if he might be holding a wire in his right hand; its angled so that if there was a wire, it would appear right in the corner between the two walls.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9There's no such language as Belgian. Pick French or (as in this case) Dutch (also known as Flemish).
- snorkle256, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You mean she stands on your finger right? Until the blinding pain forces you to buy those fancy stilettos for her.
- Teaboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh yes. Jean-Claude Van Damme is clearly the master of all Kung Fu.
- IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I expected digg users to have more sense of physics than this. Can someone now go back and resolve the forces that were acting on his finger in kgs given that his weight was approximately 40kgs?
- moxuout2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think its a fake for a few reason:
1. You do not see how he gets up there
2. No mind over matter could stop pooling of blood in your face while being vertical like that
3. I'm not sure a finger could even hold that much weight without breaking... but then again I'm not a doctor.
My thought is that he went into a identical room, and is standing on a peg sticking his finger into the ceiling with starched clothes. He doesn't move a lot so you cannot tell if his cloths are starched or not. -
