- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -19/+504#6- Eliminate the "friend" system. It's how the power users game the system. How many people on your list do you really know? If a story is good, let it rise or fall on its own merits, not by how many people the submitter has in his list.
- phatedesigns, on 12/30/2008, -7/+302i miss the days of having awesome tech stories...
- 0011002, on 12/31/2008, -1/+165Ummm...seriously....and on the front page no less....
the Submitter:
DaedalusIcarus
A 20 year-old dude from Australia (AU) who joined Digg on December 23rd, 2008

and 240 friends - echan, on 12/30/2008, -5/+163power diggers dictate digg's front page content and limit our news diversity =(
***** them and their manipulation - HCviolence, on 12/31/2008, -9/+114#6 Get cut off if you post too many duplicates
#7 Build a catapult that can launch MrBabyMan into the sun - Stettenbauer, on 12/30/2008, -4/+92Since it has gotten "main stream"it has really dumbed down.
- Philluminati, on 12/30/2008, -9/+95In my opinion the best solution would be to have the "Block User" function hides a persons submissions _as well_ as their comments. That way I can go through all the ***** links on the homepage and remove them in one fell swoop. Then my front page is more original and more diverse.
I don't need to convince _anyone_ or be part of a bury brigade or anything. I just cut out ***** in one fell swoop. It becomes "my digg" and not some "power user" digg. - synapzgap, on 12/31/2008, -0/+75Ummm...yeah...what the hell? Someone sure has been busy (and is curiously popular) in their first week at Digg? Care to respond DaedalusIcarus? New account perhaps? Or just one hell of a charismatic, well-connected guy? Did you actually read all 30 stories you dugg "1 hour-ago". Not to get "combative", but your account displays JUST the type of activity "average" users are getting pissed about and digging up this type of story to help eliminate.
- borez, on 12/31/2008, -1/+67I hardly think Kevin Rose is intentionally ***** over Digg users, and if he is then so what. I mean after all... it is his site.
OH and FTR, I would really love to see a 'filter these sites from my front page option'. I just want The Daily Mail to go the ***** away thanks. - DeskFlyer, on 12/31/2008, -3/+57Get rid of the new "Related by Keyword" section in every comment thread. ***** is annoying as *****.
- seaTown16, on 12/30/2008, -12/+66Any of you kids remember the days when digg was cool? When all the stories were tech stories or some funny pic or top-ten list (but like, actually funny)? Now every story is either from the huffingtonpost or something equally uninteresting...sigh.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -5/+39If you know them, then you probably have another way to contact them besides Digg. If they submit a story they think is great, let them IM you and ask for a Digg. The way it is now, the Digg friend system is only a means for power users to stay on top.
- supersteve, on 12/31/2008, -1/+29me too :(
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -2/+30Actually, I don't see any ads at all.
AdBlock ftw. - inactive, on 12/30/2008, -4/+31I've only been coming to Digg for a few months but I agree completely that the system seems broken. Stories should make the front page based on their merits, not based on the friends of the submitter. It defeats the entire purpose of Digg.
The ideas mentioned here are probably the best I've seen yet for fixing the system. Implemented in unison they could make Digg far more democratic overnight. - Evi1d33d, on 12/31/2008, -1/+26Digg = G4 now.
- ahwang, on 12/31/2008, -0/+24Oh DaedalusIcarus, you flew too close to the sun, man... now you've been BURNED.
- SasquatchBill, on 12/31/2008, -3/+27Ugh. No thanks. Reddit is ugly.
- redcolumbine, on 12/30/2008, -0/+24Good. Then people who want good, actively-selected content can stay here and enjoy it.
- yobboninja, on 12/31/2008, -21/+43#6: Move to reddit.
- PlasmaFlux, on 12/31/2008, -2/+24/.
- jaygeeze, on 12/30/2008, -9/+30The friends system is what makes Digg so unique and what gives it the "social" part of "social media". It allows you to find people who like similar things, as well as share amongst each other via the shouts system, interesting stories. There is a very small part of the Digg populous that abuse these features, but to rob us normal Diggers this feature is not fair. It's like punishing all people who follow Islam just because a very, very, very minuscule segment of their religion are terrorists.
Reddit doesn't have a friends system, maybe instead of trying to get Digg to become what it isn't, you should try a service that already has what you want.
- Reddit doesn't have shouts.
- Reddit doesn't focus on the submitter.
- Reddit doesn't have a friends system.
In fact, most of the things mentioned in this article, Reddit possesses - so maybe it's time for a switch. - MichaelMnb, on 12/31/2008, -3/+24Now all we need to do is watch a power digger repost this.
- ileftfark, on 12/30/2008, -1/+21They don't "drive the success of Digg" so much as they simply re-submit what someone else did a few hours before, and spam the ***** out of their 'friends' to Digg it up. WTF are you talking about?
- michaelpinto, on 12/30/2008, -4/+24My understanding (well guess) is that when a friend votes for a story that it seems to have less merit. Also having a ton of friends doesn't give you any secret powers, juts a ton of spam. In fact if you look at the very top diggers I've noticed that they have less than 200 friends.
- inactive, on 12/31/2008, -10/+29Sounds like people take digg way too seriously.
- MAGZine, on 12/31/2008, -0/+19Why are you a fan of him if you want him deleted?
- inactive, on 12/31/2008, -0/+18I love this idea. This immediately lets me ignore MrBabyMan and all the other idiots and make Digg more about what I want it to be.
- inactive, on 12/31/2008, -3/+19And deserved. How many people did he pinch content from?
- SasquatchBill, on 12/31/2008, -0/+16I DEFINITELY agree.
However, I must state for the record that ***** is not annoying. - quomen, on 12/31/2008, -2/+18I wish I could digg you a million times. God I hate what digg is now..
- badqat, on 12/31/2008, -0/+15@ raisedinhell - reddit is a good place to snatch content for digg, isn't it?
http://i41.tinypic.com/2hwp7yh.jpg
And of course, you might as well do what all evil "power users" do and shout that content you snatched, right?
http://i43.tinypic.com/mj8t40.jpg - allaboutdatiki, on 12/30/2008, -4/+18Ah, but you're not seeing the whole picture, Nitesmoke. It's not about shouting. I try to check out my friends stuff when I have the chance using the friends submissions listing.
Shouting is a PITA, IMHO. I often delete friends for abusing the shout system. - jkoby, on 12/30/2008, -2/+15Well the way I see it, once you "fix" the power-digging problem, you've still got my favorite most annoying issue. Which is, when going through the upcoming stories list looking for new stories to read, stories get submitted so fast that you go to the 2nd page of upcoming and it's showing you the same submissions from the 1st page, I had suggested a temporary lock button so that the new submissions would be on like a -2 -1 1 2 3 4, system where the brand new stories coming in would be filed through -1 then -2 and so on, but I guess it's not really a good idea.
- redcolumbine, on 12/30/2008, -2/+15GREAT suggestions. And they wouldn't reduce ad income, because they would only weed out duplicate and bot traffic; while salvaging Digg's reputation as a break from the "associate marketing" spamhavens (e.g. associatedcontent, squidoo) that dominate social networking lately with their poorly written, content-free slapdash half-page faux-articles full of commercial links.
That reminds me. 6. Allow blocking of entire domains. YES! - ethos101, on 12/31/2008, -1/+14Click on Science, Technology or just go to another website.
Fixed. - AManWithNoName, on 12/31/2008, -0/+12Won't happen. If you've ever seen Diggnation, you'd know how much Alex and Kevin push the idea that Digg is a "social news networking site". And the friend system, like it or not, is crucial to a social network.
- rocky1138, on 12/31/2008, -0/+12Very true. The number of items I bury / day has increased over the last 8-12 months.
- EmitStop, on 12/31/2008, -1/+13Or more relevant stories. All it seems to bring up for me is old, old stories from 2-3 years ago.
- georgemason01, on 12/31/2008, -3/+14reddit does have the upper hand content-wise right now, but the people there can be real douchebags. if you're going to spend a lot of time there be ready for a lot of annoying headlines, and several long-winded comments about how atheism is the answer to all the world's problems and all authority figures, especially cops, are 100% evil. also expect at least as much 4chan as you see here, and plenty of grammar naziism.
what's also notable is how the users continually talk about how much better reddit is than digg and why they "left digg for reddit", even though they never stop visiting this site in order to continue being informed enough to bitch about it. - PresidentWikis, on 12/31/2008, -2/+13#4 only applies if you were befriending people to just become a power digger. My incoming shouts provide some of the best content on this site.
- Nekura20x6, on 12/30/2008, -9/+20You're all still here, so something must be keeping you around. As long as that ad money keeps rolling in, don't expect much to change.
- Jonaas, on 12/31/2008, -2/+13let me block certain peoples submissions. Give me an ignore list. I don't want to even see the power diggers submissions, get them off MY front page.
- FrozenGonad, on 12/31/2008, -0/+10Bwhahahahaa.a.... Well spotted, sir.
- Sublex, on 12/31/2008, -3/+13Banned for 2 hours? Try a day, then a week, then a month then perm.
- Collecto, on 12/31/2008, -1/+10I seriously didn't even know they had ads on Digg.
- trotskyist, on 12/31/2008, -0/+91) take away the friend system.
I'm ***** high as a kite right now, and even I can figure out that much. -
