- benholmes, on 05/14/2008, -2/+58I really dislike the forbes.com model of feeding you "content list" after content list after content list if you keep your browser on their page. For this reason, I don't recommend them.
- eugee, on 05/14/2008, -1/+45Forbes needs to ***** hire web usability specialists.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -2/+39Who cares what stupid elitists yuppies / juniors do? If they think money is a filter for better human beings, let them be happy in their ignorance. Buried.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -0/+31I didnt bother reading it, because of the horrible layout. Can't these sites keep lists on ONE PAGE?!
- diggerachi, on 05/14/2008, -0/+23I can't stand forbes. Their website design sucks. I only see 4 social sites listed unless I'm crazy. Here's the list for those who hate slide shows.
Taken From Forbes :
Executives and other affluent types now have their own space to connect, rather than logging on MySpace. To get in the door, though, you have to fit the profile. Even if you do, though, some circles are easier to break into than others.
aSmallWorld.net :
Members: 320,000
Perks: Chit chat with the ultra-rich on the site's forum about the best hotels in Monaco, buy a yacht from a member on the Market Guide, scour the luxury travel guide or browse the social calendar. This is by far the most active and well-known exclusive social networking site on the web … but competition is biting its heels.
Getting in: Members, who pay no fee, induct newcomers on the basis of education, profession and their network of contacts. If you don't know a member with invite powers, you're out of luck.
Diamondlounge.com :
Members: 150
Perks: Modeled on real-world club Studio 54, the site is moving away from its initial emphasis on social and business networking and focusing more on dating and fun, according to owner Arya Marafie.
Getting in: Potential club members can apply online and will be accepted or declined based on what they do and whom they know. A $50 monthly fee is expected to keep out the riffraff.
Squa.re :
Members: 600; 10,000 page views a month
Perks: Want to see behind the velvet ropes at the hottest club in London or who attended the Marc Jacobs post-show party in New York? Or do you want to show off which A-listers you mingled with last night? Squa.re features community-generated Internet TV focusing on nightlife, style, high living and luxury travel. Each video or photograph uploaded by members has to be approved by the Squa.re staff for quality and class.
Getting in: E-mail Squa.re and request an invite if you're a trend-setter in (or even remotely connected to) one of the network's four channels, but getting your user-generated content featured is more challenging.
LuxuryRatings.com (launching in May) :
Perks: Unlike other exclusive networking sites, this one won't be "chatty," according to the Luxury Institute's CEO Milton Pedraza. It will be a network of member-generated ratings for brands and the people behind them. So if you're looking for an art dealer, financial adviser or wealth broker with a recommendation from like-minded wealthy peers, this could be the place to go.
Getting in: $250 annual fee. - ghostfaceDX, on 05/14/2008, -2/+23I was going to write some witty comment insulting snobby rich people, but I'm so exasperated with society that I don't even want to bother.
- dn11, on 05/14/2008, -0/+19Forbes.com: crappy multi page lists (inexplicably displayed as slide shows), for the wealthy.
- greatgatsbyII, on 05/14/2008, -0/+16I don't like how it changes the page automatically. I'm looking at the pic and reading what it says and it's changing on me.
- MrFurious2k, on 05/14/2008, -3/+19Interesting, but does anyone here actually care? There are plenty of "clubs" and "organizations" that the wealthy, socialites have that us commoners can't belong to - but honestly, am I really going to be debating the best place to have my yacht repaired? I'm still stung by the high price of gas, I doubt I have virtually anything in common with them.
- flair1, on 05/14/2008, -0/+11these sites are perfect to find suckers that are dumb enough to buy 2k bottles of vodka at a club
- reisrocks, on 05/14/2008, -2/+14Hah, I got to an ultra expensive and posh Gym.. they're all self centered, grumpy, and very boring people. So these sites probably suck, too!
- violentvinyl, on 05/14/2008, -0/+8I agree, to an extent. From a sociological standpoint I find it fascinating, but depressing. It's bad for society the way inbreeding is for genetics.
HOWEVER, and I'm not rich by any definition of the word, I did actually find myself (recently) wondering what a good place for lunch in Monaco would be, as well as a nice hotel in Barcelona (because I'll be in the Mediterranean in July, not because I often randomly wonder about cafes in European countries). That's not something I can ask my "friends" on MySpace. So I'd venture to say there are more like me who are not "wealthy socialites" that are interested in this kind of information.
All that said, I watched a few of the nightlife videos on SQUA.RE and it's the same grimy, drunk, old douchebags hitting on wanna-be supermodel white chicks that can't dance that you see in ANY other club around the world. - thingnumber2, on 05/14/2008, -1/+9I would almost digg this, but I find it difficult to get through Forbes' obnoxious slideshow.
- dn11, on 05/14/2008, -1/+9i'm sure that will work brilliantly to promote your ***** story. good thinking.
- Totz83, on 05/14/2008, -1/+8***** off! Come join the breadline on bebo! lol
- Stradenko, on 05/14/2008, -2/+8English is two complicated.
- pakke, on 05/14/2008, -2/+8I know you're trying to be sarcastic (and failing at that), but you do have a point. Some people actually make a living creating usable layouts. Unfortunately none of those people seem to have been involved in the making of Forbes.com.
- freezeout, on 05/14/2008, -1/+8(adjusts monocle) hmmm, yees.. finally I can socialize online without having to worry about all the peasants. champaign anyone?
- alamala, on 05/14/2008, -0/+8Anyone else find it amusing that none of them could afford a decent domain name?
- hayzeus, on 05/14/2008, -3/+9Clearly a target list for the next big defacement campaign.
- Asvetic, on 05/14/2008, -1/+6I wonder what happened to that email service for the filthy rich? The one where you paid like $100,000 just to open the account.
- orangetiki, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5+1 from me for that one
- cr4wl3r, on 05/14/2008, -2/+8Honestly I'm DONE with political crap. DONE with it. This Site used to be a techie's dream to go to for news and the occasional quirk (even forbes); but since the Political Elections, It's changed and I'm ***** Done.
***** You Hillary
***** You McCain
***** You Barack
***** all your asses.
Imma go play Halo now. - sgtpppr, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4Stop digging these 'slideshows' masquerading as 'articles'.
- gezgin, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4The slide show is annoying
- jondo85, on 05/14/2008, -1/+5Agreed, can everyone stop linking to these things and link to the real articles? (same goes on other sites)
Full Story: http://www.forbes.com/2008/05/02/social-networks-v ... - inactive, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3For lunch in Monaco there are a couple of good spots. If you go to Casino Square in Monte Carlo, there is a good Italian (forget the name) that is reasonable overlooking the square next to the gardens. Otherwise head down that road, go past the Fairmont hotel, and turn left at the bottom of the road just before Avenue Princess Grace. There are a couple of nice restaurants there. If you want 'trendy' then go just a little further to the Grimaldi Forum and go to Zebra on the top floor. Food is not bad and there is a great terrace and view. I know pretty much every bar and club in Monaco, and so if you need any nightlife advice then email me phillip at yahoo dot co dot uk.
These clubs and organisations are exclusive but are a mix of old and new money. There are plenty of people who have started from nothing and got there through guts, determination, drive and vision. However, commoner is a mind-set and not a genetic trait. Fortune favours the brave, and if you are single-minded enough you can certainly work your way into any social strata that you feel best suits you.
The first thing the wealthy person wants is a safe environment for their family. Secondly a place to protect them from people (or government) leeching excessively off them. Third a good social networking place. MrFurious2k is correct in that due to different needs many of the forums will be quite boring. Eg where can I find a reliable cleaner in x area, or does anyone know a good interior designer for y type of property. Sure you can find out where the best parties in St Tropez are going to be, but unless you are prepared to fork out up to 20,000e per bottle of Champagne there isn't much point going.
If you want to be happy don't keep comparing yourself to other people. Find out what makes YOU happy and follow your dreams!
Phillip. - jabela, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Thanks, I have to admit I went to the comments rather than the Forbes page... It is just such a nuisance.
- matschig, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Dude, no one ***** believes you have a profile there. Shut up
- novemberdream07, on 05/14/2008, -0/+4(adjusts opera binoculars) you mean champagne?
- shadowfoxmi, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3like Paris Hilton!
- liquisoft, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3If you're rich and pay $250 to join a social network, then you shouldn't be rich.
- raada, on 05/14/2008, -1/+4I don't want to talk to people who wants to claim their main quality is being rich. As little as I want to talk to people whose main quality is being poor. Richness is how much money you have in the bank, not how interesting person you are.
- visarya, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2there are only 4 site
- thomasprebble, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3Seriously. ***** em! I'm already tired enough of snobbery in real life.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Im writing porn spamming macros right now, I just need volunteers to help pay for the pay sites.
- akatsuki, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Douchebaggery... .just because people are rich doesn't mean they have much in the way of taste. All one has to do is go out in the meatpacking district of NYC to see that.
- normalkid0615, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2anyone else find it amusing that rather than driving around ferraris and having yacht parties they are on "social networking sites". I don't even have a myspace and my facebook is all but interesting.
- raublekick, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2The only difference between these sites and country clubs is that country clubs have nice golf courses.
- ghostfaceDX, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Money is a filter for better human beings, just generally reversed of what you are thinking.
- JoshuaLowe, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Don't they mean '5 social networking sites where people pretend to be wealthy on the Interweb'?
- ghostfaceDX, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3...why do you go there? The best gyms are like dungeons, nothing but rusty metal and cold walls.
- dn11, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3i thought that's what facebook and twitter were already for
- ghostfaceDX, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2I'm terribly sorry. I won't get frustrated at getting force fed as many ads as they can shove at me next time. I'll go back to watching the 15 second ads before my 30 second video clips now. Thanks.
- ghostfaceDX, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Mmmmm. Indubiously.
- dn11, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2dude, get anger management help. then learn to use digg. I've already come up with a plan for a site redesign that would help people like you
http://i30.tinypic.com/2qt8v37.jpg - elfuego, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2As long as their daughters keep using myspace and facebook, I'm not too worried.
- inactive, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3i think i do, message me through a shout and i'll look you up.
