    Mostly to demonstrate that these things really aren't as dangerous as they look, and that many people's extreme fears of them is rather irrational.

    Somewhat because it's kinda exciting (somewhat like riding a roller coaster or bungee jumping or motorcycle riding or hang gliding or base jumping; with a similar degree of dangerousness).
