Hair lights up like crazy when it’s back-lit."
These are all extremely general and basic. The examples are good, but the write-up is horrible. - inactive, on 12/11/2007, -3/+45HAS ANYONE SEEN MY KID!?!?! I was just washing my car and all of a sudden he was gone. Also, if you see a white bucket, that's mine too.
- afdlips, on 12/11/2007, -4/+37Put the asian kid in the bucket!
- jpp123, on 12/11/2007, -0/+31Dugg for the correct use of creative commons - so many stolen images it's nice to see somebody doing it right.
- ivanomak, on 12/11/2007, -0/+28Dugg for actually using quality photographs to illustrate a point. Usually articles like this are full of crappy photographs.
- urbandistrict, on 12/11/2007, -1/+12If only the poster spent the same amount of time and effort into his write-ups as he/she did to the reference shots. (which were great btw)
Nice refresher read, but pretty basic.
Thanks nonetheless - bxblox, on 12/11/2007, -4/+13"16 cliche photos including favorites such as: eye pictures, babies inside things, overexposed asian, and angry rugged man"
- bossm4n, on 12/11/2007, -0/+8Underexposure and Overexposure are not portrait techniques. The terms you are looking for are High Key and Low Key. By the blog authors definition, those would only be achieved by exposure control when in actuality lighting, background and subject have more to do with those effects.
- ThinkBox, on 12/11/2007, -2/+10For people unfamiliar with creative exploration in photography... these are some pretty good/basic suggestions, that is, if you need some heavy style to mask your lack of skill -- that is to say: The best portraits are simply the most interesting photos, I have a wide range of techniques I use to get what I want out of my subjects. You really have to wear people down until they forget the camera is there, and then sometimes you have to provoke them. (If you remember the famous photo of Churchill Scowling, its because the photographer SNATCHed his cigar away from him and then snapped the photo quickly after.)
I have a few self portraits in my Digg Photos....
All of these were created completely in B&W and Color Darkrooms, there is no photoshop involved, I just scanned the prints..

- fwc67, on 12/11/2007, -4/+10Some inevitably creepy ones
- LeRob, on 12/11/2007, -0/+4The dark background versus the florescent orange t-shirt in the first picture dragged me forcefully to the thought of federal inmates.
Perhaps a #17: Obscure all unwanted connotations with a fluffy dandelion beard. - Viend, on 12/11/2007, -0/+4Some of these techniques can't be done with just any camera.
But nevertheless, they're awesome. - blueishraptor, on 12/11/2007, -0/+3the blurred picture made me feel dizzy.
- clala1220, on 12/11/2007, -0/+3what? you take myspace pictures like that? you have too much time on your hands then...
- mkameli, on 12/11/2007, -0/+3Great photos, but not a lot of in-depth instruction or commentary.
- totville, on 12/11/2007, -1/+4I'm an amateur photographer. Some of this was obvious stuff, but good reminders all!

- inactive, on 12/11/2007, -1/+2This stuff is, or should be, common sense for photographers/designers. There are many more comprehensive guides on the net that explain more advanced techniques, instead of going over stuff we learned our first month in college.

Reminds me when WildBoyz, Chris Pontius and Steve-O went to meet the cannibals. Hilarious episode, I recommend you watch it. - farboo, on 12/11/2007, -1/+0More practical: take LOTS of photos and keep the good ones.
- bonesmile, on 12/11/2007, -4/+3Buried for being friggin' obvious techniques...
- monkeyboyhero, on 12/11/2007, -1/+0Interesting in a way, but really these are so vague they're almost completely useless. Here's my tip for taking great photos:
1) Don't take bad photos - supahbaaad, on 12/11/2007, -4/+2i took the bucket! but i didn't know your kid was there!!! really!
- atlacatl, on 12/11/2007, -3/+1Picture taking is more of an art than anything else. Can it be taught? The basics, maybe. But I can write an article about painting and write generalities such as:
1. Use the right colors.
2. Draw well.
3. Make it look good.
4. Use proportion accordingly.
5. Don't forget your vanishing point(s).
Etc.... - MaddieCakes, on 12/11/2007, -2/+0YES! Thank you!
