- mattfugitive, on 11/30/2008, -4/+77Umm yeah it's not a game... it's an EXPANSION to a game!
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 11/30/2008, -0/+64Why hello there almost two weeks ago! How are you!
- krazyjoker, on 11/30/2008, -1/+48anyone else not surprised?
- AmnesiacJack, on 12/01/2008, -2/+42Just 1. Get out while you can.
- Zervaman, on 12/01/2008, -0/+38Just wait till StarCraft II...
- chancesarent, on 12/01/2008, -0/+37South Koreans live SC. Westerners "play" it.
- innocentsinner, on 12/01/2008, -0/+35What's the population of South Korea again?
- Rockkybox, on 12/01/2008, -0/+27What does 'It was played as online games at my country.' mean?
- ursername180, on 11/30/2008, -5/+32Which makes it an even larger achievement. The only people buying it would have to be people with the game, which I assume would make it harder to gain more sales.
- dfross, on 12/01/2008, -7/+25How the hell does this get modded up? Nothing to do with the article and stating the obvious.
Think I'll join in: PBJs are one of the most successful sandwiches ever created. It is eaten by people playing WoW in my country. - crushfan, on 12/01/2008, -0/+17In my country, it's used to keep people in their basements.
- Angostura, on 12/01/2008, -2/+18Yup, I downloaded the 10 day demo just to see what all the fuss was about. Got my Mage to level 18 before the account expired. I realised that it was sufficiently addictive that I should never buy it.
- coldkill3r, on 11/30/2008, -5/+21Due to all the recent hype for the expansion, I just purchased WoW for the first time today. I am amazed at the sheer beauty of the game without being high on resources. Level 9 Gnome Mage on Nordrassil, any tips?
- dfross, on 12/01/2008, -0/+15I think for your first server, a PvE one is a good idea. Ignore all the braying about "lol pve noobs" and so forth, some people get e-peen by camping and killing new players. And as for alliance vs horde, it's just aesthetic. Every side has idiots. ;)
Find a good guild, the social interaction is the best part of the game. They will help you with further questions you have, too.
As for class, mage is pretty good to start with, quite simple mechanics and lots of "get out of trouble" abilities - frost nova, blink, sheep, etc etc. Your talent trees, which you'll get at level 10, should depend on your play style.
Frost is about controlling monsters while you kill them - slow them down, freeze them in place, etc. At an extreme example, you can pick up a dozen monsters and slow/kill them all at once, with the right tactic.
Fire is about large sustained damage. You can just "pew pew" to your heart's content. When you group up though, you will find you're getting aggro off the tank if you're not careful. Don't start with a big spell :)
Arcane is about burst damage, and general utility/mana conservation. The spells themselves aren't great at low level, and generally people only go into the tree for a few points, at high level.
Try to find people looking for the same dungeons as you, eg Deadmines. The /LFG tool helps for this a lot, though it's better to go with guildies or people you know as the idiot quotient will be lower.
As for PVP... I'd say don't bother. WoW's PVP is very poor, consisting of people running in circles a lot and snaring one another. Also at low level you'll find "twinks" - low level characters made by high level players with thousands of gold plowed into their gear to give them an edge over other players in that bracket. When I say "edge", we're talking twice as many HP and masses of extra hit power. It's not much fun to play against those. Also the PVP facilities themselves are poor, there is little to no Open PVP, Battlegrounds are the same 4 (and boring) for all the levels, Arena is decent if you're in a good team, but is depressingly repetitive and grindy to get good rewards. If you want to do MMO PvP, try another game later.
Mentioning the "grindy" aspect, there are a LOT of rewards in WoW for grinding, ie doing repetitive tasks. It may be a low drop rate on an item, running a dungeon for a particular thing, or killing hundreds of the same monster to gain "reputation" with a faction and a special reward. I would say leave that to the people with OCD, and have a lot of fun exploring, following quest lines, doing dungeon runs and interacting with players. That's the best part of the game. Enjoy!
(I'm a player since WoW beta, 5 level 70s but haven't got into WotLK yet. I'm currently playing Warhammer instead, primarily for the PvP which is a lot better) - Shrimpandrice, on 12/01/2008, -5/+20You're complaing about the level from 70 to 80?
How did you even get to 70 as a casual gamer in the first place?
Here's some perspective, WoW is just a game. A system rendering on nothing but pixels and nerd juice.
There are lots of casual WoW players. Don't go bashing it because you can't get to 80. - magamiako, on 12/01/2008, -2/+15Actually, the 70-80 "grind" is pretty fast. As long as you pound out the quests, you'll be good. Borean and Dragonblight both seem pretty slow because they're large zones and have a lot of quests, but when you move above that you start getting into areas with less quests. Borean has ~150, DB has ~130 (there's more than the achievement itself), Grizzly has ~75, Zul'Drak ~100, Sholazar ~75, and do some in Storm Peaks.
By this time, you'll be finished, and have around 1.5 zones to finish quests for the gold you get from doing them.
And "real raiders" do both wow around real life and real life around wow, just like every other form of entertainment. There are people that work "real life around going to clubs", for example. What exactly is your point?
Yes, you can meet women in WoW. But with the mentality you have about the game, you won't ever do so.
PS. I hooked up with a chick from WoW (didn't last, unrelated to WoW though), an old buddy of mine had his gf move in with him whom he met in WoW, and I know a couple that had gotten married and had a kid through WoW.
PPS. All of these players were hardcore players in hardcore guilds.
PPPS. All of the women are quite attractive, one's white trash but none of them are fat. - guitarman018, on 11/30/2008, -1/+13PVE is a good choice for a starter, I started on Dreadmaul (PVP) and hated getting ganked all the time, almost put me off the game.
- dmightx, on 12/01/2008, -1/+12I can have time for school, social life, and WoW. Thats not it either.
- Warcrack, on 12/01/2008, -0/+11Not to mention this expansion also requires the previous expansion - as well as the original game.
- sirbeta, on 12/01/2008, -0/+10I honestly can't say that I see what you mean.
- getbusyliving, on 12/01/2008, -1/+11You have a good friend there..

- paOol, on 12/01/2008, -4/+12I quit wow for over a year and i remember what it's like to have free time.
I can play my xbox 360 casually and still have lots of time for school and a social life.
yesterday was my birthday and my friend intentionally bought me WoTLK and didn't leave the receipt....... - hypermog, on 12/01/2008, -0/+8Yeah, therefore, it seems that WotLK can never be more successful than World of Warcraft by definition.
- FlyCO, on 12/01/2008, -2/+9Can't wait for World of Starcraft!
One can dream... - nwoolls, on 12/01/2008, -0/+7Quests give 20-30k on average, so the grind isn't too bad.
- colombian201, on 12/01/2008, -1/+8Wrong
Fire may give you a lot of damage but frost is far superior for leveling. - Ymeg, on 12/01/2008, -0/+7I'm pretty sure Blizzard releases content patches.
And I'm pretty sure they charge for their expansions because of how big they are compared to their competitors "expansions" (which are blizzards content patches) - rascilon, on 12/01/2008, -0/+7It means that if you are a cute girl you won't get dugg down even if you say something unintelligible.
- magamiako, on 12/01/2008, -0/+6I have time for WoW and a social life as our guild makes time for wow and social life.
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+6The amount of work that went into the new Xpac is huge, I really am impressed with how well Northrend was designed. It has far more content than most stand alone games, so the price seems justified to me. We are easily talking Oblivion levels of content here.
Blizzard does content patches too, and those are free. This goes WAY beyond that, and even a fair bit beyond what BC did. - captainanndor, on 12/01/2008, -1/+7I've been playing WoW for over 2 years and I still have plenty of time for casual Xbox gaming, a full-time job, social life, etc.
I'm so tired of irresponsible people with no concept of time management who whine and cry that WoW ruins their life and eats up all their time. It only does that because you allow it to. If quitting is what *you* need to do because *you* cannot limit yourself to healthy amounts of play-time, then fine. But stop making it out like the game is handcuffing you to your desk and holding you hostage. - quill, on 12/01/2008, -0/+6There have been 18 free major content patches since the release of WoW, none of which require that you purchase an expansion pack*. They've added new dungeons, a new profession (inscription), introduced the PVP system and battlegrounds, revamped the classes, and the majority of raids in the game were introduced via free content patch.
* Some of the content added in free content patches are for areas only accessible via expansion packs, but my point remains. - Rizzen, on 12/01/2008, -1/+7I want to like WoW. I want to join in on the fun. I really do... but I can't. I guess MMOs arent for me.
I guess I could be a dick and call everyone who likes them retards. Hmmm. - nickpick, on 12/01/2008, -0/+64 hours a day is not exactly casual gameplay...
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+6You seem to have WoW confused with EVE Online.
- Rockkybox, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5Jesus remind me never to steal any of your porn
- bigp3rm, on 12/01/2008, -5/+10FOR THE HORDE!
- Blandyman, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5He's pronouncing Lich like lick.
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -1/+6WoW not only has sold initial sales but continues to generate revenue on a monthly basis. It is the most successful game ever. Certainly more than the entire Rainbow Six franchise.
- shaelen, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5Don't worry about it.. Who cares if it's a couple of weeks old, I haven't seen it until now.
Thanks for posting it. - rand0mm0nkey, on 12/01/2008, -1/+6Keep buying Blizzard products and make my stocks go up, please. Thank you for your support.
- Halsfield, on 11/30/2008, -4/+9Is it really that amazing that an mmo that has xxx, xxx, xxx players gets a large percent of those players to buy an expansion to that game?
- dfross, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5@sodoh: My girlfriend played a priest to 70 so I got to see what that was like for a while, though I've not played one myself past 40. They had few things they could do to actually get out of trouble, eg pulling too many mobs. Psychic Scream, shield and heal yourself til you run out of mana and die ;) She was quite frustrated there was little CC or AoE, and she was pure shadow.
On the other hand as a primarily healing priest you can ALWAYS get a group for somewhere :) - secretoftheeast, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4You can have kids through WoW? I never knew about that feature! When did they introduce that?
- nickpick, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4That there is a hidden code that allows you playing WoW online, duh!
- cquilliam, on 12/01/2008, -1/+5Never heard of it
