- jmgoody311, on 01/25/2008, -44/+260So did he drop any good loot?
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -5/+162I ***** told Blizzard what would happen if they nerfed Mages again.
- soulpunisher, on 01/25/2008, -5/+108At least the World of Warcraft players tried to tell his school that he needed help. It's too bad the school did nothing about it though.
- hyankov, on 01/25/2008, -22/+112"For the horde !!!!!!!!111!!"
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -7/+91That is how you quit WoW...?
- Navicerts, on 01/25/2008, -10/+82Interesting article but a few things left me feeling a bit un-settled.
The author mentions that "some people" claim that his death was due to gaming, but mentions no sources or names leading me to believe that this may be sensationalism.
Also, the author did not know the person in question at all. Who is to say that gaming did not contribute to his depression? I do not think that gaming causes suicide, or that gaming causes violence or anything like that. Everything is OK in moderation and anything can be over done (take the couple of people that died after heart failure running on a 48 hours session). Once again games do not CAUSE these things but they could be a symptom of another problem or could be contributing to an existing problem (not dealing with real life, once again the moderation thing!).
I agree with most of the points made about friends and community and it's really too bad that attempts to warn the school were ignored (although we have no source on that either). usually I hear a report from the MSM about gaming causing an event like this and THEN the article start cropping up in defense. This one seems to come out of no where aside from the authors claim that "some people though it was the cause". - nmcvicke, on 01/25/2008, -13/+76Terrible, just terrible.............

......but hilarious... - Eldorian, on 01/25/2008, -3/+43You'd think after what happened at VT last year the school would have taken the emails a little more seriously and acted upon them.
- roosterjm2k2, on 01/25/2008, -1/+39How is that sad?
You can only be friends with someone you've met in person? Are you freinds with their body?
Freindships are emotional, bodies not required. I have some great friends online...I helped one of them overcome alchoholism...he would call me when he was on the brink...I would talk to him, we would start a game up and play...between support of another person, and the activity of the game to take his mind off of it...it helped him out.. - Klonopin, on 01/25/2008, -12/+49Is Alix7 being hilarious? Report it
- DonJohnTom, on 01/25/2008, -1/+32wow this is sad, kudos on his online friends sending emails of concern to the university about him but its a shame that the university didn't take any action

- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -2/+27addictive tendencies are not created by gaming.
do you call a chair an idiot if an idiot sits on it? - Sroek, on 01/25/2008, -3/+27That article is garbage, it doesn't even make the connection between the cause of suicide and WoW.
- Scopitone, on 01/25/2008, -24/+47Author - "When things are heavy on my mind, I often fire up the Xbox 360 and play some “big team battle” with my Halo 3 friends. I’ve never met any of them in real life, but I consider them true friends."
I'm sorry to hear that. - friedcalamari, on 01/25/2008, -7/+30Spirit healer will rez him.
- vofuse, on 01/25/2008, -4/+25That never would've happened on Xbox Live.
- bmoretz82, on 01/25/2008, -4/+24Come on man, you can't just give up on the world.... of warcraft.
- sockpuppets, on 01/25/2008, -3/+23Mental illness is real. Lack of compassion is probably a good indicator of one.
- DJPhoenix, on 01/25/2008, -0/+19There ae plenty of people I play WoW with that I have never met in real life, but consider friends nonetheless. We discuss things in and out of the game like music, politics, religion, life in general, etc... Sometimes it's nice to just log on and chat. Hell, if it weren't for the fact that they live thousands of miles away I probably would hang out with a lot of them.
- mattwalton56, on 01/25/2008, -1/+20I am a gamer, and I play WoW. I know first hand how much other players that you meet and become friends with care about you.
- Asianwaste, on 01/25/2008, -1/+17You shouldn't be allowed in public
- Evildudetx, on 01/25/2008, -0/+15Sorry, this didn't have crap to do with gaming. This guy was obviously unstable and mostlikely needed professional help.
- mortigon, on 01/25/2008, -1/+15"STFU and get off my team you stupid depressed noob"
- diggmeyoubitch, on 01/25/2008, -0/+14The site's down, so I can't RTFA, but judging from the title and the description, this isn't about the Virginia Tech killer. It's about a guy that killed himself. This, inturn, leads me to believe that you didn't RTFA. So, with that said.... RTFA before you comment.
- accelleron, on 01/25/2008, -1/+15Remember the last time you made someone feel miserable. Chances are, you weren't the only, or even the first one, to make that person feel miserable that day. Now imagine that there are people who feel deeply miserable every day of their lives. The only time they don't is when they're online playing games, talking to friends, etc. The reason for this is that these people have NO other source of affection, friendship, or companionship. I was in the same place a couple of years ago and there's a good chance that were it not for WoW, slashdot, and NFOrce, I wouldn't be here today.
Let me propose a solution: Stop treating people like *****. In school, at work, etc. some people are deliberately made to feel miserable by [the majority of] others, for the sole purpose of their personal amusement. If we can stop doing that and try to give everyone just a little bit of time, a little bit of attention, and a little bit of sympathy, these things can be avoided.
And to the student body at Virginia Tech: Every one of you that put this kid down, that made him feel like ***** to amuse yourself, and brushed past him because you had better things to do than listen to some stupid nerd talk, there is now real blood on your hands. It won't wash off, ever. You will go through life knowing that your festering sadism cost another human being his life. I sincerely hope that this proves to be a heavy burden for you, because it might actually motivate you to be nicer to 'that kid' in the future, and you might even save a life. - userini, on 01/25/2008, -0/+14When Chicken Soup for the Gamer's Soul comes out, you've got to send in that story.
- Malevolant, on 01/25/2008, -1/+14Why do people always have to blame a hobby or interest for someone not wanting to live anymore? Anyone who choses to off them self has serious issue that go beyond a simple explanation like playing WoW. Some people are just not right in the head and can't handle life. Think about it. How many off you could actually go through with blowing your own head off? Very few and those few would obviously have more issues than the average person without any outside influences.
- Drax0n, on 01/25/2008, -1/+14I've met friends online that have help me through incredibly bad times, I've help[ed friends online and they've helped me when we've needed it. The sad thing is your so narrow minded.
- neocr0n, on 01/25/2008, -1/+13Quite narrow minded to just assume people who play games would rather do that then something physical. A lot of factors contribute to people choosing gamers over sports.
- Drax0n, on 01/25/2008, -0/+12Wow.. what a self centered bigiot you are. Maybe once mommy and daddy take that silver spoon out of your mouth you'll realise that life can suck and its not always your fault.
- boxybrzown, on 01/25/2008, -5/+16Come on, don't digg this down just because he beat you to it.
- scoottie, on 01/25/2008, -4/+15You dont have to play all the time. You have no clue what you are talking about. I have played WoW since it was in beta and have a regular 9-5 job go out with friends, go on vacations, etc etc etc and i have "kept up" with the game.
- jcastillo81, on 01/25/2008, -1/+12I never understood how it is somehow morally superior to do something physical as opposed to enjoying a video game instead.
- shakbhaji, on 01/25/2008, -4/+15whatever. stereotypes are true to some degree. not to mention funny when discussed in the right context. i'm asian btw.

- TrevorBelmont, on 01/25/2008, -5/+15You just pretty much called caucasians a pack of murderers and by extension you called me "White Devil". ***** YOUR racist idea.
To be serious a moment, settle down there.
Oh! and just for giggles... Who has the number one death toll in HISTORY? Mao Tse Tung, an Asian. Take that, argument! - thefandango, on 01/25/2008, -2/+12got it off a mob in Housewares
- D1lux, on 01/25/2008, -1/+10A lot of people are going take offense to the following line:
"in all honesty, find it sad that some people would rather stay inside and play video games than go outside and do something physical."
I find it sad that you are so naïve as to pity people for doing something they enjoy doing. Gamers (myself included) do not need or want your pity.
I am a gamer, but I also work out for 2-3 hours at least 3 times a week (there's physical activity for you) and have a very healthy social life. Just because I enjoy devoting a couple of hours each day to playing WoW does not mean you -or anyone- is above me and should feel sad for my decisions. - zKman, on 01/25/2008, -0/+9Some stories with actual research and reporting:

He didn't commit suicide because he played world of warcraft. He was depressed, and was suffering from an identity crisis following 4/16. - slvrbullet87, on 01/25/2008, -2/+10Havent you ever seen chapelles show?
I bet you're the kind of guy who signs pettion to get the washington redskins to change their name - sockpuppets, on 01/25/2008, -1/+9All entertainment is escapism. That's the point of it.
- GiJoeBob, on 01/25/2008, -0/+8I have some great friends I have met through Xbox Live. That doesn't mean my ONLY friends are online.
- Qumahlin, on 01/25/2008, -1/+8HOLY *****, you mean someone actually thought of such an "original" comment before? Guess what buddy, whatever message board you read it on, I guarantee it wasn't the first place the comment was made. It doesn't take a witty person to put together Death=loot dropping if you've played any MMO
- Ultomato, on 01/25/2008, -0/+7 my close korean friend had to endure a lot of BS at virginia tech. people would call him chink and throw ***** at him. WoW wasnt daniel kims problem it was his depression and loneliness.
