- rdldr1, on 11/27/2008, -12/+516This is a stupid article with a stupid premise. 2D games have never left.
- Davers, on 11/27/2008, -9/+375What a joke. So this guys admits that every genre but platformers immediately benefited from 3D graphics, and even platformers were good once they fixed the camera? Believe it or not, most people who play 3D games won't be interested in playing card games.
- Manberries, on 11/27/2008, -13/+225Yeah sure, lets ditch our cars, trains, and plains and go back to riding horses, too. Dumbass.
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -8/+201Question: Are we getting a bit sick of 3D graphics?
Answer: Nope. - blitz718, on 11/27/2008, -9/+180This article sucks ass. 3D graphics ruined games not because of the games themselves, but the culture it brought with it. A large portion of new age gamers almost solely use graphics as a measuring stick for the quality of a game, and so developers started to focus way too much on improving the graphics of a game and thus the game play, storyline, and general qualities that affect the ACTUAL game experience all suffered greatly. The SNES golden days of RPGs with sprites now only live on in their remakes and re-releases. /cries

It took 20 minutes to download, but we still fapped to it, damn it! - lacronicus, on 11/27/2008, -7/+85World of Warcraft: The Card Game: The Video Game
Oh, and let's not forget that it started as a strategy game... - Dronez, on 11/27/2008, -8/+80Buried. Author is an idiot who doesn't understand progress.
- disappointed, on 11/27/2008, -2/+73There are good reasons not to like 3D in gaming. This article explores none of them. Is it supposed to be ironic? Or are we supposed to take his ramblings about 1D games seriously!? If you're intersted in 1D gaming, try the world's smallest game (37 bytes) - "kill your keyboard". It's a bit of fun but I can see why it never took off.

- ClevelandBrown, on 11/27/2008, -8/+62I'm not even going to read the article, due to the sheer stupidity of the title.
- punkcat, on 11/27/2008, -2/+541d games were ruined by the 2nd dimension.
- Zeigy, on 11/27/2008, -1/+47Here's a real 1d game:

- NathanielJ, on 11/27/2008, -2/+29"I got into gaming because it let me mimic real life."
I heard that real life is good for mimicking real life too. - NathanielJ, on 11/27/2008, -0/+25People have been saying that for the last 10 years. Every time a new generation of consoles comes out, we hear endless BS about how now that graphics are finally "realistic", developers can truly focus on gameplay.
It's a never-ending cycle because our expectations just keep getting higher. - NathanielJ, on 11/27/2008, -0/+24@Syphon8 - I'm well aware that there's an upper limit, but Crysis isn't even *close* to that upper limit, and even once we get things vegetation textures and all that looking pixel-perfect, we have a ridiculously long way to go before human animations look anywhere near perfect.
Once we get those perfect, people will have some new expectations, like being able to do pixel-perfect human animations for 500 people on screen at the same time (in a game that takes place in a crowded city, for example, or a large battlefield). Then we'll want 500 realistic human animations that can be cut apart and wounded realistically with any object in the game, and so on and so on. - kleash, on 11/27/2008, -2/+24There are lots of good 2D games the authors didn't even mention, especially indie games like "World of Goo"(must play if you haven't).
- Rocketbird, on 11/27/2008, -3/+24wtf??
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -2/+22I love the fact that you made this post, and your nick describes exactly how I feel. I think since its from tech-radar, the author is likely going for ironic. I mean, like who reads straight-up posts anyway these days?
As a hobbiest game designer, I've often found myself thinking along the lines of the article's thesis. What I keep coming back to is the eternal design rule: Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Ever.
I am currently playing LBP, a Platform game that surely benefits from 3D for level building, but could just as easily have been built in playable form in 2D using layers and paralax. But it wouldn't look nearly as cool would it?
I am also playing Super Street Fighter Turbo HD Remix. Sheesh what a mouthful. This game is amazing 2D, a good representation of what is possible in this generation for 2D. This game shines because it is still Street Fighter (with network support), with the sharpest 2D available (but no 8 shade gradients on those spites, comon' Udon!)
Finally another game I'm playing is Bionic Commando, (And Prince of Persia Remix). These games use 2D gameplay fused with perspective 3D graphics in realtime. This is awesome, and perfect examples of a good designer making a good decision:
"Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. Ever."
I think one thing 3D Graphics bring to the table is better visual representation of physics. You can only do so much in raster 2D. And when you can't do it in 2D consider mixing forms (ala many DS games), rather than going full blown 3D. If you still can't do it, THEN go with 3D :)
Vector is another story... - passedoutghost, on 11/27/2008, -0/+19But you don't get to respawn in rl.
- DickyT83, on 11/27/2008, -0/+19I'm not a fan of long flat lands either.
- MunroCool, on 11/27/2008, -5/+24Am I the only one to think this was the worst comment ever?
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -0/+19FILE DONE!
- sirbeta, on 11/27/2008, -0/+19Of all the reasons he could have chosen to dislike 3D games, I really can't say he picked any one of them that would be shared with anyone else. 2D games have their place, and I wish people would still create more of them than they currently do (I love them to death) but 3D games do as well.
- Tolzmaniac, on 11/27/2008, -0/+18There are many modern games with great story lines. Bioshock, Half-Life, Fallout, Mass Effect, just to name a few.
You need to remember that there were also some very bad games for SNES in addition to the games you liked. It's not like they ALL used to have great stories. - CoreyTamas, on 11/27/2008, -0/+18A 2D one at that!
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -0/+18I'm still waiting for a good, top down MMORPG.
- NathanielJ, on 11/27/2008, -0/+18@DforSpiD - That's what 'roids are for. They're like real-life cheat codes.
- staticneuron, on 11/28/2008, -0/+17This guy obviously has not played super mario galaxy or littlebigplanet. Those platformers are amazing and all about 3d.
- inquebiss, on 11/27/2008, -0/+17wish I had thought of that
- HueytheFreeman, on 11/28/2008, -0/+17That's actually really awesome.
- DryCat, on 11/27/2008, -2/+18"When 3D was first invented, back in the early cretaceous period"
How old is the author of this thing? Don't trust anybody under 25's opinion about video games. - kosmoX, on 11/28/2008, -0/+16I don't know what you're talking about. I have over 9000 ironies in my closet.
- NicoNicoNico, on 11/27/2008, -5/+21Wow. Okay, how about no.
I got into gaming because it let me mimic real life. Some of us happen to like those types of games.
At least he's a healer. (Says the other dorky healer.) - Finalreminder, on 11/27/2008, -3/+19What a ***** retarded article.
Retire grand-dad - DrCyclops, on 11/28/2008, -0/+16I'm still trying to figure out what a one dimensional game would be like.
- ReinMasamuri, on 11/27/2008, -0/+16I think he's partially right but with the wrong premise.
I think that when game producers decided to make 3D games, many decided that the graphics were more important than the rest of the game. They'd spend 90% of their budget on making the game "look good" graphics wise, and ignore the rest of the game for the most part.
So in a way yeah, it WAS a bad thing when 3D came into games when it's for the sake of 3D itself.
A good example of this is Braid. When they decided to put gameplay before a 3D graphic experience they made a great game. - inactive, on 11/27/2008, -0/+16Hell no. I can go on playing first person shooters my entire life.
- phqu88, on 11/27/2008, -3/+18@DforSpiD...your an idiot. He was obviously talking about Half-Life 2 and Fallout 3 or have you been living under a rock for the past 10 years not to know what games hes talking about? Modern=in the now...not 10 years ago...stop being "That Guy" and trying to read to much into his statement...when you really can't even do that.
- Pramma, on 11/27/2008, -1/+16What would gaming be without Lara Croft's 3D breasts?
- init100, on 11/27/2008, -1/+16The article has a point. I liked Worms and Worms 2 very much, but the later 3D versions sucked really hard.
- DrewPeacock, on 11/27/2008, -0/+15Less triangular?
- sirdandan, on 11/27/2008, -3/+18Buried for lack of argument.
