- XxZtemxX, on 08/06/2008, -0/+12Spore on the 7th, and WAR on the 18th... its going to be a good month.
if only Blizzard was on top of things and SC2 was on it's way that soon... :-P - Joudoki, on 08/06/2008, -1/+12...
I just saved myself from world of wacraft goddamnit - Flambo, on 08/06/2008, -1/+10NO. NO NO NO TOO EARLY NO. I was counting on having at least until October before kissing my wonderful outdoor life goodbye. =(
- WyldeJ, on 08/06/2008, -0/+8I am quite excited for this, bored of WoW now. But, SC2. I can't wait! Hurry up Bliz!
- runeasgar, on 08/06/2008, -0/+8And how many of those 700,000 subscriptions came right back to WoW afterwards?
I hope Warhammer is great (and that they release it for Mac), but so far all the contenders to WoW have failed miserably -- and Blizzard has an expansion for WoW right around the corner. - Unskillful, on 08/06/2008, -2/+8Apparently blizz lost 700,000 subscriptions when AoC came out, I wonder what effect this will have. Honestly, i've been lightly following this MMO but now that there is a concrete release date I'm actually kind of excited, PvP is my highlight of an MMO.
- Jeepy, on 08/06/2008, -0/+5Player centric MMOs will always have a smaller player base than WoW. With Warhammer focusing so heavily on player driven PvP it will probably level off to a much smaller number of people playing in the long run. Not to say that will make it a bad game(DaOC had/has a small dedicated core and is still playable), but it won't necessarily ever overtake WoW.
Blizzard proved that item centric games make the most popular MMOs and if you look at the number of people who played Diablo 2 or who are currently playing WoW it works. Hell if PvP and player centric persistent worlds made the best MMOs Neverwinter Nights would be the biggest online game in history. But at the end of the day most people are just item whores(guilty party posting). - Meekus, on 08/06/2008, -0/+4"September 18th is the Day of Reckoning. "
- mistertrogdor, on 08/06/2008, -0/+3Waaagh!!!
And right when I'm supposed to be getting a college education... WHY!? - Tsujigiri, on 08/07/2008, -0/+3Why more people don't get the point you just made completely mystifies me. I recall four years ago when WoW came out and I thought, "Huh, all this ***** looks like a Warhammer rip-off."
- ShellShock11, on 08/07/2008, -0/+3Awesome, just in time for school.
- Urbanninja622, on 08/07/2008, -0/+3I really can't get caught up in MMOs again, this is bad.
- NinjaBoy, on 08/06/2008, -1/+4No mention of a free trial? I will NOT buy a game (especially from EA) unless i know it will run well on my pc (Noting ea again) AND that I will enjoy playing it for more than 3 days.
- MrG021, on 08/06/2008, -2/+4WoW is Pokemon. Of all the MMOs I'd like to see WAR pull population from WoW is not one of them..
I can't wait to get into this game. Got to get our guild level up asap so we can capture our first keep..
So i have something to defend from 8PM to 2AM just like way back when in DAoC :D
Keep battles again! Finally!! - completerobot, on 08/07/2008, -1/+3More like World of Warhammer. Online. Craft.
- runeasgar, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2I agree, but so long as Blizzard is the only company with the willingness to develop for the Mac platform, WoW gets my vote.
- Unskillful, on 08/06/2008, -0/+240% actually, and even then...I was implying that AoC wasn't even that good of a game and it still "dented" WoW, if only a little bit.
- Needles13, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2This game is incredibly boring as is. It feels like a bad version of WoW with some cool new features. These cool new features, however, still don't make up for the sense of boring and slowness I get from playing this game. (Yes I'm in beta.)
It's probably worth a try to some of you, open beta maybe.
Darkfall is coming. - Mike668, on 08/06/2008, -0/+2First impressions will be everything with this game. If it's good at the start (doesn't matter how it is end game at this point) it will be enough to pull a sizable number of players from WoW. It's got enough hype and exposure. If it sucks from the start they'll have players quickly cancel and jump back to WoW. At that point, it doesn't matter how good the game gets with improvements via patches. They'll never win back the initial player base.
I remain cautiously optimistic. - inactive, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2Another MMO that ran over budget and had to get pushed out the door too soon? Nah, couldn't be.
- Feldon, on 08/09/2008, -0/+2AoC Warhammer blah blah blah how about giving me an MMO that isn't like or trying to be wow.
- Uberinuka, on 08/07/2008, -0/+2The team attempted to develop a non-grinding aspect...lets see if they pulled it off right!!!
- trizzlelv, on 08/31/2008, -0/+1I'm sure a Mac client will come out eventually.. right? Luckily I have both.
- theguesser10, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1I bought the Spore Creature Creator, don't get too excited. And be careful what you wish for, you don't good games to come out too close to each other.
- stryk8, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Sounds like an awesome combination to me. I thought the "feel" of DAoC was great.
- spirit1989, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1Or you could look at the minimum specifications they released a few days ago and see if your pc is above them.
- Trax416, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1WAR will appeal to PVP'ers. I don't mean people who do stupid arena's, or run by each other in AV. I mean some of the old school PVP'ers from past MMO's, and those in Wow who enjoy epic large scale battles that mean something.
It won't kill wow, and it won't be a game for everyone. MOst people who play wow are very casual, and enjoy PVE content. Though this came can be played casually, it won't pull the huge raiding crowed, or those who want an easy 2 hours a weekend of Wow time.
I have been in beta for a little over a year, and I see it getting a good 2-3 million population. The community so far is amazing, and hopefully it stays that way. - scoottie, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1yeah me too
- Evi1d33d, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1I just saved $500 by buying a PC.
- Hudon689, on 06/13/2009, -0/+1lol@elsimer: "release date for the Mac"
it's a game, not a new web browser - spirit1989, on 08/09/2008, -0/+1Gamers on Macs? Isn't that an even bigger myth than girl-gamers?
- theguesser10, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Um... think you're number might be off as that's actually pretty close to the number of total subscriptions to AoC when it launched.
- Spandia, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Wait, AoC players are allowed to complain about other MMOs?
- SirRealist, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1After the flop that was Conan, this may be the next big thing.
- transitive, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Its more like WoW is a Warhammer Clone.
Warhammer goes back 30 years, long long before Blizzard or Warcraft ever existed. The source material was so cool and compelling that it was savagely ripped off by Blizzard. - resolve, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1For those that don't know, he's referencing a Penny Arcade: (One of my favorites too)
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2006/04/10/ - rufus2, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Age of Conan had a decent start and got many favorable first impressions. The problem was that there was no end game and there was nothing to do.
- topbob, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1No decent MMO's have free trials until at least a year or two after release, common now.
- iceyone, on 08/08/2008, -0/+1I hear they've stopped development on Darkfall because they've decided to write it in Perl 6, but only after Duke Nuke 'em forever ships, because they want to see some of the Turing Complete AI in it.
- Vanor, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1No offense, but from what I've seen, the games look a hell of a lot better than WoW's and definitely has it's own unique style.
- Racerx52, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1War 40K is coming(years away) , But this isn't a wow clone. This games base originated before warcraft.
- otros, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1What about Burning Crusade?
- mattfugitive, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1In other news, Blizzard announces that September 18th will be Lag Freedom Day in the World of Warcraft....
- appleseed1234, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1There goes my roommate's ability to achieve anything in life.
- Seemefearme, on 08/07/2008, -1/+2I'm in the beta. It's not very good. Save your money, or try the open beta coming soon. Either way it isn't a good game.
- Solusar, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1YOUR JUST IGNORANT
- IrvineKinneas50, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1Actually, WAR is exactly the game to pull population from WoW. They carbon-copied the graphical design of WoW and use (stole) a lot of game elements (I'm in the closed beta, so I can't give specifics, NDA and all). The game was intentionally made and marketed to appeal to and take from the WoW market.
I got Age of Conan at release and really liked it but my casual-WoW-playing girlfriend didn't really like it. She loved WAR and wants to play it even though I keep reminding her that her character is going to get wiped when the game comes out. One of the things she liked is that "it feels like I already know how to play it" because the control scheme and the UI and the game feel is taken directly from WoW.
Take from that what you will. And let me second your desire to play another game like DAoC, my favorite MMORPG ever. - ScionX, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0Was that because AoC came out, or because they slammed a ban hammer on gliders that day.
- wyntrfylth, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0WoW on a 24" iMac is incredible. That the Warhammer PM team is either negligently uninformed, or just so resource-constrained, as to snub this established platform represents nothing more than some teeth-and-hair exec making a typically short-sighted decision to decline additional corporate revenue. Who cares if they port it months or years later? I certainly won't invest in a company that refuses to invest in my platform-of-choice. Epic fail, IMO.
- VigRoco, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0For the greater good...
