- Talus, on 10/11/2007, -6/+125Halo 2 is already playable on XP. And it sucks. Porting a 3 year old xbox game to the PC and trying to use it as a Windows Vista selling feature? Real smart.
- OBKenobi, on 10/11/2007, -9/+68Ok, so someone explain why this game was claimed to be Vista only? I mean, other than because of Microsoft FUD intended to sell Vista.
- Johnny1337h4x0r, on 10/11/2007, -2/+48Could anyone run some type of bench-marks for comparison? It would be pretty funny if it ran better under XP than Vista.
- kheldorin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+31Vista has the in-built capabilities for Shadowrun to run on the "Live platform" which allows you to play with other Xbox 360 as well as other Xbox live features such as achievements. Shadowrun is a multiplayer only game so it's kinda pointless to hack it to install on XP if you don't somehow hack the multiplayer mechanism as well.
- ATH025, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23What about my welcome?
- WhereAmI, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22The Inquirer a legit news source?
When did that happen? - TheHolyLancer, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23goto TPB and search Shadowrun to see this for your self, they cannot post it because they are a more legit news source...
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 08/11/2008, -11/+29Ironically, the game isn't even worth pirating, let alone paying for. Its graphics are dated even by 2003 standards and yeesh does the gameplay suck! Pass on it folks. It's not even worth the bandwidth to download. :(
- kcpwnsgman, on 10/11/2007, -2/+18thats basically the only reason why, that and to force the 'Windows Live' brand
- philbrewer, on 10/11/2007, -4/+20"legacy operating system, windows XP" = digg.
- beastlrd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16You are a dumbass, digg did not bow down, and this has nothing to do with the RIAA
- dmobley, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17what, you mean they artificially (sorta) hamstrung a game to only play natively on Vista in order to potentially migrate most of their gaming customers to Vista, an OS they otherwise wouldn't care about?
NO. REALLY, NOBODY SAW THAT COMING AT ALL.
so it can be semi-hacked into running on XP, what's the shocking thing here? It had to have been developed well before the Vista SDK was completed, so they had to probably mostly do it on DX9. DX10-only things will probably take another year or so to show up and then it might be difficult or impossible to run a lot of the newer games on an XP machine. MS just wanted to kickstart people into buying Vista, even though it's not really necessary yet. It's called business, everyone needs to get over it. It's not shocking that Microsoft wants people to buy their new operating system is it? If you put out a product that people don't really NEED, would you really just sit around and hope people use it rather than giving them a semi-compelling but totally optional reason to buy it? - DropTheOxygen, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14A patch for halo2 on xp was put out by the Razor1911 crew within a week of the pc release
- DontEatTheFish, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14http://forums.halomods.com/viewtopic.php?t=61540&sid=2e5b3f479825dd6591f68a3158e8a22e
your welcome. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Console shooters will always pale in comparison to their PC counterparts. The wii could change this somewhat if game designers could get their heads around the remotes sensitivity and make a competant shooter that isnt glitched all to hell (red steel). although the expandability and moddability of a PC game will never be touched by a console. I never got what the big deal with halo was either, it seemed alright, but nothing that makes it so much better than any other fps. I found the level design to be very boring eventually in halo 1 (fight your way to the bottom of this place then fight your way back out of the same long repetitive area, and the multiplayer level design isnt that special either.
- WhiteIce89, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13There is no performance loss. There is a big gain in XP as opposed to Vista in framerates here.
- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Those links are just for the game, not for the patch that lets the game run on Windows XP machines, which is what the article is about. Did you even read the article or just assume by the title?
- latova, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Halo 2 isn't new ;)
- TheHolyLancer, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12If you got a version that I could play on XP with WASD and mice smoothly and the new graphics they claim that this version have, then please share...
- EntangledPhysx, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12Vista is VERY slow compared to XP on PC's with identical hardware. Just have to wait till they get some performance bugs worked out... or something...
- ploop, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Take it easy with the coffee.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11The game is Vista-Only because Microsoft is the publisher, and Microsoft is forcing users to buy Vista if they want to play hot new games like Halo 2 and Shadowrun.
- Jagdwulfe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I agree, Halo in itself was nothing special. Fanboys who played it as their first FPS game are what has keep this thing alive.
- nmckinlay, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Grammar much?
- nonymous666, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The article is about Shadorun, not Halo 2
- LucasKane, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I should too!
- Cowfrommars, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8YOU + ARE = YOU'RE
- Bamborzled, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yeah, like the RIAA really cares about HD DVDs. You know, the ones that store movies.
- 12340987, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8That's quite irritating; I thought there were actual technical reasons that some games would run Vista only. Is it really a crack does it in in some way emulate vista?
- fatdog789, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9It's only *supported* for Vista. It runs on more systems, but MS and the developers will only support Vista installs.
It's kind of like how Ubuntu only supports fully free software, but can run pretty much any Linux program. - TehDoctor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5He thinks its very nice and hopes your grateful.
//Just in case some moron tries to correct me, those were intentional - skrowl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Whats the point of Halo 2 or Shadowrun without online multiplayer? There will never be a crack that allow online multiplayer because the online multiplayer uses LIVE, which ensures you're using clean (uncracked) binaries before you can even get a list of games.
- drakino, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6>Vista has the in-built capabilities for Shadowrun to run on the "Live platform" which allows you to play with other Xbox 360 as well as other Xbox live features such as achievements.
Nope. Shadowrun and Halo 2 install Games for Windows Live onto Vista, it's not built in, and didn't even get beta tested until April. It has no integration with Vista, and you must start a game to sign into Live, so the usefulness of it to chat to gaming friends is not present like it is on the 360.
The only reason the games are Vista only is the same reason things started becoming XP only (instead of 2000/XP), MS is trying to get people to upgrade. - pathy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6It's Enemy Territory: Quake Wars dammit!
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4Your welcome is showing.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5...neither is Shadowrun. Unless you consider an anal rape of a brilliant franchise "hot" >:(
Not that I'm bitter or anything... :P - sinembarg0, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3go to the site who's name is what a spawn orf the BSD logo could be called. Look on the forums.
- xino, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Halo 2 is new to Vista.
- CeeJayDK, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5And it isn't hot.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah, it was just a matter of time, but it's certainly not a surprise considering you can't really just up and limit something to a particular OS.
I think everyone who buys into the "But it only run on Vista!" bit is a moron and needs to learn a bit about basic computing.
Plus it's amusing how people are clamoring about a 3 year old game. Hello 2004. - fibreoptix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Halo 2 on PC...... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
For console players I guess Halo is a big deal, on PC there is nothing extraordinary here. Other PC fps games blow it away.
I never understood the fascination with Halo. Mabey because I'm a PC gamer and have seen that ***** (and better) for years before Halo. - Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ban them from what? In any case, until they can eliminate 100% of false positives, that'd be a very unwise move.
- benitojuarez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/238/halo2onxpcy2.jpg
- spideyman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I agree that MANY game developers are leaving the PC for consoles due to piracy. It killed systems in the past. Both the Atari ST and Amiga systems were plagued by piracy. Thankfully, the PC has a lot more going for it, but as far as gaming goes, someday it could be consoles only.
- Morphinity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's so much effort to play an outdated game.
- BabyWookie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2News Flash: You an entitled to your opinion and all, but please don't state things in absolute terms and assume that everyone agrees with you. I've been playing FPS games on PCs since Wolf 3D, with Half-Life pretty much being my favorite game of all time and yet, I have always enjoyed the Halo series. I think that both games have great SP campaigns, with the first one perhaps being a little more exciting, mainly because it was a new series and you didn't know what to expect. Still, I'm going through the SP campaign in the PC version of Halo 2 right now and having a lot of fun. Thanks.
- quaunaut, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Damn, do I disagree. I can't get enough.
- kris33, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Halo 2 for XP guide I copied from another forum. It works fine, I have tested it, but the game itself has some problems. It is a very bad port, but if you have a good pc, it will run fine.
