- alex7575, on 09/29/2008, -0/+62Valve rocks even harder now!
EA, you listening?!? - Saulidus, on 09/29/2008, -0/+44Valve is one of the few companies left I happily buy games from.
- twiztidsinz, on 09/29/2008, -0/+31Again... Score one for Valve's rational thinking and user-focused model.
- ELCad, on 09/29/2008, -0/+28Zombie Panic is a great mod, this should help people join in on the fun.
- leerayIG88, on 09/29/2008, -0/+25I don't think you're ready for the real zombie apocalypse.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -0/+22They should host Dystopia on Steam and help it get some more servers online... its a terrific multiplayer mod, but the team just did a pitiful job of promoting it.
http://www.dystopia-game.com/ - greeniemeani, on 09/29/2008, -2/+23Need a dispena here! Bonk!
- Mejogid, on 09/29/2008, -1/+20Team Fortress is a HL mod, Team Fortress 2 shares nothing with it but a name, basic gameplay classes and a few maps.
- steelclash84, on 09/29/2008, -1/+19not...host it?
- mattyice11, on 09/29/2008, -1/+18They're trying to do too much. Does anyone give a ***** about the multiplayer portion of this mod? Get the singleplayer done and release it.
- inactive, on 09/29/2008, -1/+16I was just playing Zombie Panic for 7 ***** hours.
Sammys server is the best one since you get upgrades. CABIN FTW! - treedude, on 09/29/2008, -0/+14EA will never listen. They crank out sequels and drop support for the previous games in the process. They only care about the bottom line. Not to mention the DRM...
- kubedawg, on 09/29/2008, -0/+13Fortress Forever will likely try to get onto this program once we've converted to the Orange Box SDK. I can't wait. That means FF will be able to get automatic updates that will boost this mod even further and become a very popular game. FF is like a mix between TFC and TF2, and it's incredibly fun. Ever since version 2.1 has come out, the support for this mod has gone through the roof!
- incubusbeatsall, on 09/29/2008, -0/+12I remember when Steam was first released. It was an absolute piece of crap. Going from WON servers to Steam servers was absolutely terrible. I quit playing CS and came back a few years later, and all of the suddent it was amazingly simple and convenient.
In short, Valve rules. - Checkerd, on 09/29/2008, -0/+11I don't think I've ever won a game. I always end up getting cornered two minutes in.
- jsdratm, on 09/29/2008, -0/+10This is a good idea and it should make the mods more popular. There are some really good mods out there for the Valve games. Maybe they will expand it to include mods for 3rd party games like GTA:SA?
- Slovenian6474, on 09/29/2008, -0/+10Valve practice of promoting user-made mods, then hiring the teams that made the popular ones is a win-win-win for everyone. Valve gets some good employees, programmers get jobs, consumers get great games. Steam has done away with the cd key, scratched/lost discs, etc. Other companies haven't been keeping up with times quite as well.
- herrferret, on 09/29/2008, -1/+11My tiny violin, listen to it play.
- treedude, on 09/29/2008, -0/+10More like TF started as a mod. Just like CS did. Both are owned and maintained by Valve now though. Have been for some time.
- IndigoMoss, on 09/29/2008, -0/+9Why is Valve good? I don't understand how they can keep coming out with hit after hit, while at the same time supporting the people that has pushed them to the top, while other companies ***** all over the people that have supported them. It's pretty amazing. I just installed Zombie Panic and Insurgency this weekend, which I might not have otherwise have even heard of. Now I just need to stop getting gibbed by zombies in the first 3 seconds.
- JesusFaction, on 09/29/2008, -0/+8good job valve
hopefully some good mods will get on there - FinalStriker, on 09/29/2008, -0/+8I think it's a little of column 'A,' a little of column 'B.
- screwzluse, on 09/29/2008, -1/+8Well, they need to release the mod first before it can be on Steam, eh?
- Scrappy1850, on 09/29/2008, -0/+7Where is the Black Mesa: Source mod?
- 2Bnor2B, on 09/29/2008, -0/+6Valve should do a RTS based game. Could you imagine an Empire Earth type game with Valve's dedication to updates and user content?
- Meatball01, on 09/29/2008, -0/+6Actually, when that mod came out, there were ***** of people.
- herrferret, on 09/29/2008, -0/+6Some people call it slowness, I call it atmosphere :D
- Arkanoid22, on 09/29/2008, -0/+5I'm runnin' circles around ya
- Lunarbunny, on 09/29/2008, -0/+5Personally I think Zombie Panic is way too slow. Left 4 Dead is more my pace (I played it at PAX and loved it).
- h4mx0r, on 09/29/2008, -1/+6Hidden: Source should be on the list :(
This is a great idea though. More exposure for the mod also means more exposure for the team members. Might help some of them get picked out for the game industry! - GordonFree, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4Very bad management from their part. I offered to help with the project (I'm a designer/composer). They do have some well produced tracks for it already, but I could still help out. No answer from them.
They won't finish it and they won't take help to finish it. In my years of experience, that's a recipe for failure. - takua108, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4Yeah, it was one of the first "total conversion" Half-Life 2 mods back in the day. They've done a pitiful job of continuing promoting it, but it was played a LOT a few years back.
- hivltg, on 09/29/2008, -6/+10I wrote an article about this already but no one dugg it :-(
http://digg.com/pc_games/Valve_Announces_5_Mods_Ho ... - endgame, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4Valve & CD Projekt are the BEST companies around in gaming.
- doommastr, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4Yes.
- Abomonog, on 09/29/2008, -1/+5Team Fortress is a Quake mod, Mejogid.
- passedoutghost, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3HL:S has no change to the story line. Only some graphical changes.
- Tezdoll, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3As treedude said, they where mods that are now fully functional games. A mod means you have to own the orignal Half-life2 to play Team Fortress2...now you don't need to own Half-life2 to play Tream Fortress2 or at least have it installed.
/clicked on the wrong reply aparently.
//slashies! - BenKenobi88, on 09/29/2008, -1/+4It's sad because it's already looking dated...it's not bad at all, but if they want to bring it closer to HL2:ep2 levels, the mod is never going to get released.
- protogenxl, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3I think that Portal Prelude will be on steam because their site says the download will be available in 10 days.
- Markab3, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Agreed. Dystopia is a fantastic mod.
- TigerGD, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Expect IP/copyright-infringing mods to not be included. Just like you won't see Epic releasing a Samus Aran model with the user-built content packs they'll distribute for UT3.
- Alex2, on 09/29/2008, -4/+7Isn't Team Fortress a HL mod? So.. some of these are mods of mods.
- Darkangel754, on 09/30/2008, -0/+3Half-life source is really just Half-life 1 with ragdolls and Half-life 2 water.
- aywwts4, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2TF2 and almost every source game for that matter is a mod by every definition except that it was modified by the developers and charged for. Hell if you buy or install any game alone it still creates a HL2 directory and a HL2.exe file, and I'm pretty sure it runs the HL2.exe with an option to start TF2.
Really that's more of a compliment to the incredibly strong easy to work with game engine they set up than anything. And if your argument is that mods have to be free and official games cost money, we have a problem with Garry's Notamod - Fragnarg, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2I played zombie panic for hl1, but I really enjoyed brain bread for hl1
- jedicor, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2If by "precursor" you mean "successor"...
- hivltg, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2I had my account hijacked got my account back but the bastard had hacked on VAC servers including CS:S TF:2 DOD:S and half life 1 etc. Got me banned from all VAC servers, so I had to go out and buy all the games again. I have never given out my password and I still cant figure this one out. I love steam though its arguably one of the best distribution systems ever.
