"I solve Practical Problems!" - NoMoon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Funny story, I just bought Half-Life 2 and Episode one last night for $25. Bad timing, eh?
- whaambulance, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Just realized you need a steam account to see details so here they are:
44.95$ pre-order 49.95$ retail
About the Package
"...the package which could legitimately be called the deal of the century." – IGN
The Orange Box features three highly-awaited new games by Valve: Half-Life® 2: Episode Two, the second installment in the Half-Life 2 episodic trilogy; Team Fortress® 2, the sequel to the game that put class-based, multiplayer team warfare on the map; and Portal, the game that blends puzzles, first person action, and adventure gaming to produce an experience like no other.
To bring gamers up to date with the Half-Life 2 universe, The Orange Box also includes Half-Life 2, the best-selling and highest-rated action game series of all time, and the episodic debut Half-Life® 2: Episode One.
Already own Half-Life 2 or Half-Life 2: Episode One?
Give your extra game as a gift to a friend when you purchase The Orange Box. - Gir53457, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Yes, the Beta is for pre-purchasers through Steam only.
- i208khonsu, on 10/10/2007, -4/+19I do agree that it's a little bogus that they are making gamers "buy" HL2 and HL2 Ep1 in the Orange Box to take part in the beta or to obtain a physical copy of the game.
However Valve could have just released Ep2, Portal, and TF2 in the black box, charged the same money as they are for the orange box, and nobody would have complained.
Being a UT and Quake junkie in the days of HL I have yet to play through Half Life so I for one am looking forward to having the games basically for free. - bubba9999, on 10/10/2007, -4/+17It stinks that they don't throw a bone to people that bought Episode 1. I thought that was the whole idea behind Steam - buy games in modules, thus saving distribution costs and making it easier and cheaper (for all) to buy expansion modules as they come out. $5 != real savings.
- Unlgued, on 10/29/2007, -2/+15I disagree. I've stolen enough games to be something of an expert on this topic.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -0/+13Yeah, it is a little convoluted, but like you put it, with $44.95 for three new titles you might as well just look at it from the angle that they're throwing Half-Life 2 and Episode One in for free. I think its a sweet deal.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14This is 45 bucks for 3 games, aka 15 bucks a game. If that's not cheap I don't know what is.
- swanny89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10I just pre-purchased it and valve suggests that you gift the unused licenses to a friend, which I think is a pretty good idea.
- palehorse864, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Guys, Black box without HL2 and Episode 1 was originally going to be $40.00 before they canceled it. If you pre-order orange box, you pay $45.00. I know your upset about buying the same thing again (I already own HL2 and Episode 1 as well) but seriously, $5.00 isn't that bad for both if you give them to a friend. It's not like black box would have been significantly cheaper, the old price point was set a while back before the sku was cancelled.
While I didn't want to re-buy them either, $5.00 for the two isn't bad. - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -1/+10Edit: Sorry, I read your comment wrong. You do need to purchase it via Steam to participate in the beta.
- Protoss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9You're not paying for them. Calculate the prices before complaining. Valve basically threw in the prior HL2 games as a bonus for new buyers.
- Dochtuir, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9The Cancled black box?
- wazzledoozle2, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11You are. HL2 and Ep.1 are free at this price. You're getting 3 new games for $45, which is a steal.
- Aden, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You keep saying demo. It's the BETA. Meaning this is meant to test the game not to entice you to buy it.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+7I love the little counter next to him that counts the guys he kills. :D
- huntr2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Peggle is so addictive.
- Dhalgren, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Dude, HL2 rocks I don't know what you're talking about...
- tonaros, on 11/14/2007, -4/+10Wasn't TF2 supposed to come with HL2 Gold/Silver? Or am I mistaken?
- lament, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6alll you have to do is look at the gameplay vids on IGN to know it's going to be awesome.
http://media.pc.ign.com/media/011/011640/vids_1.html - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6I think it was just a case of really ***** timing. The FF team announced their release date today too, and I don't think the TF2 beta was a snap idea. So, I wouldn't blame Valve.
- Brutus013, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Guys, you can still buy TF2/Portal/HL2: EP2 seperate from Steam. Just not through stores.
- Lambeco, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I am also totally bummed.
~Brian Hughes - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6Episode One was selling for more than $20 on retail shelves when it was released. Even without HL2 and EP1, the Orange Box is still $15 for each new game. That's dirt-ass cheap.
- valkyries, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6hahahah.....
- huntr2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Steam is pre-loading TF2 as we speak. I had to right-click it's entry to start the pre-loading though.
- gage006, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Wow, poor guys. Their mod is going to be eclipsed by TF2.
- EuphopiaB, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I own the HD2900XT.
First to neiltc13, go to hell, it works great.
The card comes with a paper and the key on it. I entered it into Steam months ago, and lo and behold I have Portal, EP2 and TF2 waiting for release to download. So in summary, yes we do get it. - econojon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It is Monday, where is it!!!
- ThndrShk2k, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7It seems this coincides with http://fortress-forever.com/ Fortress Forever's released date of Sept 17th.
Coincidence? - bluemist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I'm pretty sure they'll come up with a separate package in the future, this is the initial deal for them to make more money. For now the Orange Box is a great way to bring existing non-HL 2 gamers up to speed.
- Rikushix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I wonder if this is open to the people that got the orange box when they bought a crossfire ATI video card?
- palehorse864, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I don't think the beta is intended as a demo, more of a bonus to people who pre-order, and it will probably be a bit different than a demo, more fleshed out in some areas, less so in others. They did something very similar with counter-strike source beta early on when Half-Life 2 was released, but once the product hit stores they released a Half-Life 2 demo to entice people to buy the game. The Half-Life 2 demo was free and distributed to several file hosting services.
- palehorse864, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Cxan, there originally was such a package planned called The Black Box, and it was to retail for $40 with the gold box that included HL2 and Ep1 being $50. With the pre-order price, the gold box is currently $45.00, $5 more than the black box for people who already bought HL2 and Ep1. I don't think it's a big deal to pay an extra $5 to gift it to a friend, bu hopefully once all the pre-ordering is done they will release the black box on steam for the originaly planned $40 price point.
- ChildeRoland420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You're still gonna have to install Steam, and use it if you want to play multiplayer.
- LMN8R, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4There will still be other packages on Steam that exclude HL2 and Episode One. They've said so multiple times.
As it stands though, the Black Box (Ep 2, Portal, TF2) was supposed to be $40. This is $5 more and you get HL2 and Episode One, both of which you can give to a friend or sell.
Not to mention that it comes with Peggle Extreme, which just plain kicks all kinds of ass. - counterplex, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Gir53457: That was hilarious! I'm adding the others here:
Soldier: http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=game&AppId=985&cc=US
Heavy: http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=game&AppId=960&cc=US
Enjoy! - Dochtuir, on 10/10/2007, -9/+12Why can't I just buy Ep 2 / TF2 / Portal on it's own? I already bought HL2 and EP1 though steam ages ago. I don't see the point in buying them again.
- Yarnage, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You can only buy those three games though. Valve has already said you could. This just happens to be a special offer for their bundle
- timbro1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3"...the package which could legitimately be called the deal of the century." – IGN
- gumpy5, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've been playing peggle for about 4 hours now.
This is an awesome deal. - canon66, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You can buy them each on their own but, according to Valve's current pricing, that'll cost you more, around $80. They're charging $30 each for Episode 2 and and TF2 and $20 for Portal.
- ChildeRoland420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You're wrong. You can preload TF2, and only TF2.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Never, ever, EVER pre-order a game unless you're getting something for it. I have never been able to find a game in stores the day it's come out so all you're doing is locking in your money to one supplier. Chances are, you'll miss out on a good pre-order deal like this one or someone will have it cheaper than the store you pre-ordered from.
- ObeseSnake, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Steam forums are saying late Monday night Pacific time.
- Shawn4168, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm pretty sure Lost Coast is free to all owners of HL2. I would assume that the same is true for Orange Box owners. Deathmatch is a lot of fun...could be a welcome diversion from TF2.
- darkzealot89, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The Steam forums are being OWNED right now...
- twoboxen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i thought it would open up at 8am PST, but obviously not. somone post when it's up!
- COLDshiver, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2LONG LIVE PC GAMING!
