- scalded, on 02/20/2009, -3/+180Yeah, he was confused when someone copied his submission 2 hours later, added a fake #expensivegames anchor to the url to bypass the dupe checker, resubmitted, and then got it on the front page before his own submission.
- Loserbait, on 02/20/2009, -5/+127This is submitted -before- the previous headliner.
- Sublimin4L, on 02/20/2009, -0/+120***** $60 games, and $300 college Chem books.
- Nyaos, on 02/20/2009, -4/+102Dugg for his picture
- colonchancer, on 02/19/2009, -9/+99I suppose if you only release good or great games you respect your customers more.
I can understand how all the other companies want to bend us over, they don't respect us cause we by their crap and regret it in the morning. Since all they release is top notch, well developed games they respect us and deal with us like people. So we introduce them to our friends.
I literally do talk friends into playing games, mainly left4skin, I wouldn't do that with some DRM ridden filth. - Leysa, on 02/20/2009, -101/+184Were you confused by the dupe checker? http://digg.com/gaming_news/Are_Video_Games_Too_Ex ...
- supersonicjim, on 02/20/2009, -2/+82I think he is saying he ain't circumcised.
- Frexxia, on 02/20/2009, -4/+72*cough* 1 dollar=1 euro conversion Valve....
- gi0rgi0s, on 02/20/2009, -9/+68Let's see if we can get this in the top 10 twice!
- EddyG12, on 02/20/2009, -1/+53Short answer:
yes - deezeejoey, on 02/20/2009, -0/+46I can only afford used games :(
- ingmar, on 02/20/2009, -7/+52Ah, Valve... Aren't they the ones who try to sell games in Euros for the amount in Dollars? A game for 50$ sells for 50€ over here, although it'd be something like 40€. (50 € = 63$)
10€ or 13$ surcharge for the exact same game, nothing localized or translated? I think not. - anyone4apint, on 02/20/2009, -0/+38EA take note... if you want to beat piracy the solution is to create a better value product, not to kill your customers with DRM and a high price tag, by taking this route people will pay cash for what you produce. Go Valve.
- inactive, on 02/20/2009, -1/+38Long answer:
yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee- - cosinezero, on 02/20/2009, -1/+33I don't care about spending $60 on a great game. I care about all the $60 I've spent on utter *****.
And I partly blame game review sites who MUST be taking kickbacks because many of the "9.5" rated games are blindingly dull with no replayability. It's like review sites have two ratings - AWESOME! and BAD! and you have to be really bad to get the bad rating.
Spore comes to mind here... - kevyn, on 02/20/2009, -0/+31Maybe you would be interested in a few of my used MP3s?
- RetepNamenots, on 02/20/2009, -1/+32left4skin?
- Yazilliclick, on 02/20/2009, -0/+30@kkeut Don't think scalded is, you seem to be a might bit confused though.
- abmcalli, on 02/20/2009, -0/+30It's true unfortunately. Especially for some of the upper-level college courses. I had a few this semester that cost me close to $200 each...
- bigteebo, on 02/20/2009, -2/+31If it's a game I spend 100+ hours on(Fallout 3), it's justified its price. If it's a game that you can clear out in 20 hours, eh, make it a 20 dollar game. No, don't put a 1:1 hour/dollar ratio per game.
- damack, on 02/20/2009, -1/+30Thing about Valve is their probably the best developer on the planet alongside Blizzard right now.
I think Valve's magic is they make fantastic multi player games like Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead in which you can spend many hours enjoying getting your moneys worth. When their not making fantastic multi player games their making masterpieces like Half Life 2 and then they offer the fruits of their labour at a fantastic price and bundle in more good games(The Orange Box).
It's the same with Blizzard people are still playing Warcraft 3 and Starcraft to this day!
I think Blizzard and Valve are the only two good developers though the rest of the developers insist on putting out the same ***** every year to get quick sales none of them are aiming for the long term sales and gain like Valve and Blizzard.
Personally I think without Valve and Blizzard gaming would be dead. - StrangeFamous, on 02/20/2009, -2/+30Yes, and that article was submitted after this one. Personally, I'd rather give my Digg to ArcadeJunkies - the user who didn't cheat the dupe checker.
- kkeut, on 02/20/2009, -0/+28egad. indeed, i hit the wrong reply button. that comment was intended for Leysa.
- wolfing, on 02/20/2009, -0/+26I just ordered a new game (RPG) called 'Drakensang'. New it costs $29.99. At the usual $50 or $60 I would have checked reviews left and right, see if someone else had it, maybe even be tempted to pirate it or just wait until it hit bargain bins in 6 months or so. At $29.99 (and probably even if it was $39.99) I just went ahead and bought it. Maybe the guy is right.
- Philbert, on 02/20/2009, -0/+26Funny thing is he's working so hard to afford them that he doesn't have time to play them.
- dontreplytome, on 02/20/2009, -1/+25//"Is $25 too expensive for a large popcorn and beverage?" ? You don't hear that... You know why? Government monopoly.//
Please explain the government monopoly on popcorn and beverages in movie theaters. - RetepNamenots, on 02/20/2009, -17/+40This was already on the front page a couple of hours ago, but anyway...
- djbon2112, on 02/20/2009, -0/+23eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
- RetepNamenots, on 02/20/2009, -4/+27Because you're not supporting the game developers for their work and future projects?
- WalesAlex, on 02/20/2009, -0/+23s
- webyatri, on 02/20/2009, -0/+20I saw a 10 year old kid spend around $200 only on games last Christmas while I was buying my $5 used game. and I went 'what the ......'
- abrasion, on 02/20/2009, -2/+22Off topic: What the ***** are you serious? $300 chem books for college?
I recall some books being expensive when I went to high school 15 years ago, 15 or 20$ and so on but 300$ books is just absoloute gouging. - exeprime, on 02/20/2009, -2/+22I am quite sure European prices have VAT (usually ~20%) included. Americans don't have to pay that.
- ArcadeJunkies, on 02/20/2009, -1/+20Thank you! I am so sick of submitting ***** on Digg only to be beat by blatent dupes.
I feel so redeemed. - StrangeFamous, on 02/20/2009, -0/+19Nothin' wrong with that, my fellow penny pincher.
Half.com is your friend. - strictnein, on 02/20/2009, -0/+18Are you stalking his little brother?
- CaptainNoPants, on 02/20/2009, -0/+184 days in and Fallout 3 has already replaced organic food as my main source of sustenance.
- kkeut, on 02/20/2009, -1/+19seriously, dupe check's only work for things submitted before your submission.
- Tr3mulant, on 02/20/2009, -3/+21That picture of Newell looks as if someone just caught him lifting cookies out of the cookie jar.
- smoger, on 02/20/2009, -0/+18I don't think that games are GENERALLY too expensive, but some of them certainly are. As a huge Street Fighter fan, I hate to say it, but SF4 is probably a good example of a game thats too expensive. On the flip side,.. I would have paid double what I did for SSF2THDR.
Another great example is Left4Dead. I've had my eye on it but hadn't grabbed it yet due to having a huge backlog. Last weekend it was $25 on Steam so of course I grabbed it. I've only had time to play it about 90 minutes this week.. so I think that speaks volumes that Newell knows what he's talking about.
Luckily(for consumers) those overpriced games tend to quickly simmer down to reasonable prices.. but by then it's too late for the publishers to really benefit
digg: this comment box STILL doesn't work right in Firefox(3.0.6, Mac 10.5.6). I'd rather have to scroll than have it bounce all over the place as I type!(and I'm sure many would agree) - GalacticXenu, on 02/20/2009, -13/+29You're an idiot. The multi-player is primary, the single-player is secondary. My god you're stupid.
- nsbomb, on 02/20/2009, -1/+17You paid $70 for a PS3 game?
/fail - Elranzer, on 02/20/2009, -0/+15I always thought the TI-83 (the standard for graphing calculators) was about $80 each. Which is still high, considering they were $80 when they first came out.
- saltinekracka20, on 02/20/2009, -5/+20I <3 Valve.
- iDiggYa, on 02/20/2009, -0/+15Left4Dead was on sale for $25 on Steam, the Friday 13th weekend. =D
- worseforwine, on 02/20/2009, -1/+16You are right! Video games are too expensive!
- Platysquirrel, on 02/20/2009, -0/+15BOOMER!!!
Hey theres a... pipe bomb over here. - kmiller2087, on 02/20/2009, -0/+15youre not gonna talk me into playing left4skin, sorry.
- flammablewater, on 02/20/2009, -1/+16My little brother works for minimum wage and spends every last cent on video games. He has every new console, DS, PSP, like 5 DDR mats, rock band and guitar hero WT, the list goes on. What is wrong with these kids?
- flammablewater, on 02/20/2009, -4/+19BOOMER!
