msnbc.msn.com — Here are our Top 5 shocking moments. Be warned, the following contains plot spoilers. We ’ve made the titles deliberately vague so that you might avert your eyes and click past if you’re still getting around to playing these games.
- 1437 diggs
- digg it
- theaceoffire, on 03/27/2008, -19/+5I have never heard of "Karateka".
I think I see why.- theaceoffire, on 03/27/2008, -1/+34Also, I was kind of surprised that Toad wasn't in this.
No one else was surprised by "The princess is in another castle"?- Lou3000, on 03/27/2008, -1/+1Yeah, a game that most people who play video games are too young to remember wins out over Mario's famous line?
- JGib, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1The most surprising moment was when clouds turned into bushes
- aargh01, on 03/27/2008, -0/+15Karateka was awesome. That game was the best game I had back when I was a kid, nonstop wicked karate battling, and then you get to the end, and you're all excited, you run to your love's arms, and... I think I'm still a little traumatized by that. Jeez...
- capiCrimm, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1it said if you ran she'd hug you.
- Matt2k, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1That game was brutal, it spent the last 50 times you played training you to always be on guard. So you cautiously approach the lady.. WHAM
I think I gave it up after that. This was the pre-save era. It was shocking, but also really frustrating. They'd never put something like that in a game today.
- Matt2k, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1That game was brutal, it spent the last 50 times you played training you to always be on guard. So you cautiously approach the lady.. WHAM
- capiCrimm, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1it said if you ran she'd hug you.
- Peko, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6Karateka was one of the earliest games (was it the 1st 'big game'?) to have significant cinematic attributes.
Damn that bird!- disingenious, on 03/28/2008, -2/+2DAMN BIRD OMTWTFBBQ
- theaceoffire, on 03/27/2008, -1/+34Also, I was kind of surprised that Toad wasn't in this.
- smurf22, on 03/27/2008, -4/+2286 pages for 5 moments! This is getting ridiculous, why can't they put it all on one page?
- av4rice, on 03/27/2008, -1/+111I like how the page number never changes between the Prev/Next buttons too. It's always "1 / 6"
- TheSabre, on 03/27/2008, -2/+23That's because each page is one-sixth of the article. Duh.
- Llanowar, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Works fine for me in Opera.
- Chirp08, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5that seriously has to be the most ***** up standards compliance issue ever, how do you seriously make a page counter not work in all browsers?
- tech42er, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Yes. I ***** hate that about MSNBC's "slide shows".
- lenninct, on 03/27/2008, -0/+10thats how they make money on ads more pages more ads, i just dont want to see the top 100 of something made this way
- TheMidnight, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2008/fsb/0803/galle ...
- Terr01, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3It's all one one page for me...
... Because obviously Microsoft has a real thing against Opera and nothing shows up.- thealliedhacker, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3Works for me in Opera, you probably blocked one of the domains that the content is being served from.
- Terr01, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5Gasp. Shock. You're right, it was http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/j/* that did it. Thanks.
And to think I was blaming the javascript errors. I feel just a little bit like this guy:
http://thedailywtf.com/Articles/Classic-WTF-The-Gr ...
- Terr01, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5Gasp. Shock. You're right, it was http://msnbcmedia.msn.com/j/* that did it. Thanks.
- Loornadune, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1I've been on page one of six for the last four pages.
- thealliedhacker, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3Works for me in Opera, you probably blocked one of the domains that the content is being served from.
- Peko, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2It is on one page.
/Never finished the article. Still on the first page - brutalsponge, on 03/28/2008, -2/+2more pages = more adverts!
that's probably what theyre thinking.
- av4rice, on 03/27/2008, -1/+111I like how the page number never changes between the Prev/Next buttons too. It's always "1 / 6"
- artofwot, on 03/27/2008, -22/+12Errm... no Bioshock? No Half-Life 2: Episode 2?
- NathanielJ, on 03/27/2008, -3/+24Yeah, who would have thought that they couldn't fit every game that everyone wanted to see on a list of 5 games?
- krazykor, on 03/27/2008, -9/+2Clearly you haven't played Bioshock.
- Shadow82v, on 03/28/2008, -1/+1LOL at Bioshock. Honestly, who DIDN'T see that twist coming? Very predictable.
- krazykor, on 03/27/2008, -9/+2Clearly you haven't played Bioshock.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 03/27/2008, -9/+9Episode 2..... the shocker was "that's it" WTF??!! It's like they ran out of money or time and called it a day and went with the last level they completed fully.
- tehrich, on 03/27/2008, -1/+8I thought that was Halo 2?
- PyroChan, on 03/28/2008, -0/+0dugg for greatness and truthyness.
- bagboyrebel, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3you do realize that there is supposed to be an episode 3, that's the whole point of episodic content.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 03/29/2008, -1/+1SPOILER ALERT
episodic content? some jelly bean shows up in a typical warehouse on a typical level pokes a hole in the guys head and done? WTF was that? one of the ***** abrupt endings ever (especially after Half Life 2 original), and still the orange box is one of the top 3 next gen games (oh ***** he mentioned consoles) I've played.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 03/29/2008, -1/+1SPOILER ALERT
- Sogui, on 03/27/2008, -1/+9Agreed on Bioshock, but the "shocking moment" from HL2:EP2 was done at the very end and while dramatic, it was only a minor plot character to begin with and really doesn't change the flow of the story much at all.
They add 1 anonymous scientist, take a more familiar one away. I love it, but it wouldn't go into my top 5. - r0b0, on 03/27/2008, -1/+10Warning:
The following comment is fulled with spoilers for those of you who still haven't played/beat Bioshock.
I was about to say something about Bioshock... I mean, the part when you finally realize your being controlled by atlas and you brutally bludgeon Andrew Ryan to death with a golf club, and it ends with a broken part of the golf club in his face? I don't even think the resident evil one is shocking, its more suprising as more of an "ZOMG what was that!?"- Antares29, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6That was a big surprise. I had to reload the game because a friend was in the bathroom when it happened, just so he could experience it also.
- Protoss, on 03/28/2008, -1/+4Haha I reinstalled the damn game because my Steam install was corrupt and there was no voice, man what a ***** amazing game.
- Antares29, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6That was a big surprise. I had to reload the game because a friend was in the bathroom when it happened, just so he could experience it also.
- AwesomeMonster, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Would you kindly put bioshock on this list?
- NathanielJ, on 03/27/2008, -3/+24Yeah, who would have thought that they couldn't fit every game that everyone wanted to see on a list of 5 games?
- schizogony, on 03/27/2008, -1/+144Okay, the constant front paging of MSNBC lists of games is really getting weird.
- capiCrimm, on 03/27/2008, -0/+24but MSNBC is the source for video games!
- sgtpppr, on 03/28/2008, -2/+16Considering this list is absolutely terrible...i'm now sure that diggers will now frontpage anything having to do with games. Between the incredibly poor content and the fact it's 5 items spread over 6 pages I'm not sure where to start.
- AngryVoklav, on 03/28/2008, -0/+6MSNBC is a big media company, so they've probably cooked up a way to game Digg - its the only explanation because their content sucks b@lls.
- DarkDx, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2It has also happebed with forbes... ("bullying at work" and "fuel-efficient cars")....
I think something fishy is cooking right now, if I get to see another of those articles I'll have to contact Kevin (and YOU(reading my comment) should contact him too, if he gets enough emails he will hav eto do something).
- joshefosho, on 03/27/2008, -11/+3Epic lulz
- noots, on 03/27/2008, -2/+32getting shot at the end of Mafia was a bit of a shock, although to be expected as it seems to always happen in mafia films.
Deus Ex (1) was full of shocking twists and turns at the time, such an epic game.- DJPandemonium, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4I know I was pretty devastated at the end of Mafia. That was shocking to me.
- noots, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1i guess we can look forward to mafia 2 which looks like it's going to kick ass
- Genady, on 03/28/2008, -3/+2Would you kindly add BioShock's big reveal to your list love?
- superal1394, on 03/28/2008, -1/+4The end of HL2:EP2.
Yeah... I was close to tears. - celkin, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Duke Nukem is Master Chief!!!
- DrIce926, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Noots, you have it right on the money with regard to Deus Ex. The return to UNATCO after meeting up with Paul in NYC totally gave me some rad goosebumps (I managed to keep it spoiler free, but I think you'll understand what I'm talking about).
- noots, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1you should just spoil it, it's criminal that people haven't played it yet.
i remember the shock of seeing paul dead after you escaped from captivity, and about a month later on i was reading an article about how you could actually save him in NY, quite difficultly. How many games allow that sort of script change? (he actually had a small role later on) it was one of the greatest games of all times.
- noots, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1you should just spoil it, it's criminal that people haven't played it yet.
- DJPandemonium, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4I know I was pretty devastated at the end of Mafia. That was shocking to me.
- thewindpath, on 03/27/2008, -8/+64DAMN YOU SEPHIROTH!
- Owwmykneecap, on 03/28/2008, -5/+2Alys dying in Phantasy Star IV...earlier, better...
- xlneoMAXlx, on 03/28/2008, -2/+2WRONG
- Owwmykneecap, on 03/28/2008, -5/+1No I'm not.
- Owwmykneecap, on 03/28/2008, -5/+2Alys dying in Phantasy Star IV...earlier, better...
- NathanielJ, on 03/27/2008, -4/+23Actually a pretty good list considering it's from MSNBC and split up into 6 pages for some reason.
- Dynamo418, on 03/27/2008, -1/+76Dugg for KOTOR. I cannot describe how much i love that game. Even after beating it 3 or 4 times, i still get excited at the thought of playing it. So many great moments, great dialogue options.. i just loved it. KOTOR 2 was pretty great as well.
- Antares29, on 03/27/2008, -5/+7Yeah, but you had to know the big twist in KOTOR from the beginning. As soon as I was told I couldn't remember anything and that the big bad scary person was "missing", I knew immediately that I was Revan. Still a great game though!
- modix, on 03/28/2008, -3/+3I think you really had to not be paying attention for it to be a "shock". I spent the whole game waiting for the reveal so I could hear the real plot.
- bagboyrebel, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2I just assumed it didn't give you much history so you could more easily assume the role of the character, it is an rpg after all.
- Downtime, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1I never saw it coming, and a few buddies I know didn't either, so props to ya for figuring it out. KOTOR is one of my favorite games of all time, glad to see it on this list - it deserves it! Oh, KOTOR 2 was decent, but nowhere close as the first one.
- adh3isive, on 03/28/2008, -7/+9Really? KOTOR 2 was a steaming pile compared to the 1st.
- ComradeGoby, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5I liked KOTOR 2's story more than KOTOR's. I just liked the darker tone.
Damn you LucasArts for rushing Obsidian!
- ComradeGoby, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5I liked KOTOR 2's story more than KOTOR's. I just liked the darker tone.
- sgtpppr, on 03/28/2008, -2/+5KOTOR2 was a very weak sequel. It had none of the fun or exciting moments of the first game and even made you retread the same areas, but with none of the exploring or fun (check out the revisiting of the sith school in the second game...somehow made the best part of the first game horribly boring).
- DaBigDragon, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Agreed. But there's a mod coming out that's supposed to re-add a whole bunch of stuff that they cut from KOTOR 2. They've been working on it for about 2 years and are finally finishing it up. It's called The Sith Lords Restoration Project. There sites' at: http://www.team-gizka.org/ It looks promising.
- Antares29, on 03/27/2008, -5/+7Yeah, but you had to know the big twist in KOTOR from the beginning. As soon as I was told I couldn't remember anything and that the big bad scary person was "missing", I knew immediately that I was Revan. Still a great game though!
- HedwigDies, on 03/27/2008, -13/+8Something tells me MSNBC should stick to the news, and leave video game analysis to people like Yahtzee.
- thewindpath, on 03/27/2008, -18/+6DAMN YOU SEPHIROTH!!
- XenoSNK, on 03/27/2008, -20/+6I still can't believe that ***** killed Aeris.
Seriously. Who does that?- dalos, on 03/27/2008, -1/+18A villain?
- TheAmbushAhead, on 03/27/2008, -0/+7Sephiroth?
- XenoSNK, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4.... well played, sirs.
- robocop1, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1lol i dont know why you got dugg down. that made me laugh for some stupid reason.
- skippy17, on 03/27/2008, -15/+76Snape kills Dumbledore
- Mewchu11, on 03/27/2008, -0/+20It was his sled
- MrRabbit, on 03/27/2008, -0/+15It's people.. Soylent Green is made out of people.....
- BubbaBubberson, on 03/27/2008, -0/+13IT'S A COOKBOOK!!!!!!!
- jedimasta, on 03/27/2008, -0/+17No, *I* am your father.
- kippjon, on 03/27/2008, -2/+13Bruce Willis was a dead person the entire time.
- Pillage, on 03/28/2008, -0/+9It was earth all along.
- Coolmatt49, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3Woah...Déjà vu...
Bowser is the final boss in Super Mario Bros. - metateck, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5Mufassa dies, and Simba comes back to kick Scar's ass.
- celkin, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5There is no spoon.
- jetfuel, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5They're the same guy!
- Coolmatt49, on 03/28/2008, -0/+7Rick Astley is never gonna give you up!
- bagboyrebel, on 03/28/2008, -1/+4Gollum steals the ring and falls into mount doom.
- pnmoore, on 03/28/2008, -1/+5It's a trap!
- d0onut, on 03/28/2008, -0/+9The kid's therapist is a ghost.
- MrRabbit, on 03/27/2008, -0/+15It's people.. Soylent Green is made out of people.....
- BJLStorm, on 03/27/2008, -3/+12Noooo, you bitch!
- benplaut, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4Black dies, too.
- elchuy, on 03/28/2008, -1/+1The chick from the Crying Game is a dude.
- DarkDx, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/5048/1189596313 ...
- petebot, on 03/28/2008, -1/+3Einhorn is Finkle!
- Mewchu11, on 03/27/2008, -0/+20It was his sled
- drakia, on 03/27/2008, -7/+27"“Final Fantasy” is one of the most popular franchises in video game history, with 12 games to its credit and numerous copycats."
Umm... 12 games? They do know that Square made more than just FF 1 through 12, right?- LBobRife, on 03/27/2008, -2/+49It's MSNBC, no, they do not.
- circa1015, on 03/28/2008, -2/+16Really, you are going to pick at this line? I'm pretty sure that the writer of the article knows of the abundant spin-offs. Saying there are 12 games in the Final Fantasy series conveys to the uninformed how epic the series is, and expects the informed to know what the hell they are talking about. It is like snapping at somebody for saying there are six Star Wars movies, reminding them they forgot the Clone Wars and Christmas special.
- AwesomeMonster, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1the final fantasy adventure series are no pushovers buddy.
- Schda, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3and don't forget the ewok movies!
- kaythecraven, on 03/27/2008, -8/+63What?! No Portal?! I was picking up my jaw off the floor when I saw the "Cake is a Lie"
- DaviDTC, on 03/27/2008, -0/+29"updated 5:34 p.m. PT, Wed., Aug. 1, 2007"
That would be why. - Jimmeeee, on 03/28/2008, -1/+2I guess that also explains the total lack of Bioshock also. I was apalled that a no-name game like Karateka made the list without even a mention to "Would you kindly?" Also, if you're going to count the zombie dog attack in Resident Evil, you may as well count the first time a headcrab jumps at you in Half-Life (and if you're like me, every time after that in the game and all of its sequels).
- DaviDTC, on 03/27/2008, -0/+29"updated 5:34 p.m. PT, Wed., Aug. 1, 2007"
- glucoseboy, on 03/27/2008, -0/+23KOTOR 1. Yup, that was a real "Oh, my god. that is so cool"
- ryan926, on 03/27/2008, -11/+4This wasn't a really good list, the only thing here that was actually shocking was the reveal or Samus Aran's gender. And WTF were they talking about with the Jedi evil go good...something whatever crap.
- LBobRife, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5Reread the Jedi thing. You might understand it, it's not that confusing. Apprentice Sith overthrows his Lord. You fight Apprentice, find out that you are actually the Lord that was overthrown but lost your memory. Since you are a Jedi, it ***** with your idea of what makes good and evil seperate.
- pnmoore, on 03/28/2008, -0/+6You must not be old enough to have played (or just didn't play) Karateka. No save points and to get to the very end and EVERYBODY died the first time they got there, at least the people I know. That is a legendary twisted ending!
- joltjake, on 03/27/2008, -10/+56 ***** pages!
- Condemned, on 03/27/2008, -3/+3How about Mr. Tibbits coming alive in Condemned: Criminal Origins?
It was pretty shocking...- MrFisty, on 03/28/2008, -1/+1Unless you'd seen Se7en, which where most of the plot and design of that game was lifted from.
- fluxingtontheIV, on 03/27/2008, -0/+28I don't get it? Why did they put a pic of the number one shocking game moment on their introduction screen? Kinda gave it away...
- glittler, on 03/28/2008, -0/+11oh come on you must have known even before you clicked on the link to read the article that **spoilers** Aeris dying would be #1
- ComradeGoby, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4It shouldn't even warrant a spoiler tag. I've never played FFVI and I know Aeries dies.
- metateck, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3Well FFVI didn't have much to do with Aeris. She has a much larger role in FFVII than "Flower Girl #2" as she is listed in the credits for FFVI.
- ComradeGoby, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4It shouldn't even warrant a spoiler tag. I've never played FFVI and I know Aeries dies.
- glittler, on 03/28/2008, -0/+11oh come on you must have known even before you clicked on the link to read the article that **spoilers** Aeris dying would be #1
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 03/27/2008, -0/+10One day I'll break my addiction to these needlessly multi-paged articles.... starting tomorrow.
- bweltondav, on 03/27/2008, -0/+13I think the most surprising plot twist for me had to come from kotor. A textbook-perfect example of good writing.
- luke374, on 03/28/2008, -0/+8I'd go with "Thank you, but the Princess is in another castle." ... That ***** *****.
- Recluse, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2hahaha! damn that was funny.
- luke374, on 03/28/2008, -0/+8I'd go with "Thank you, but the Princess is in another castle." ... That ***** *****.
- julianprieto, on 03/27/2008, -5/+5not getting cake
- AppleGeorge, on 03/27/2008, -7/+15That was an extremely weak list.
- ultraJesus, on 03/27/2008, -12/+2God damn mother ***** piece of ***** multi page articles can suck my giant veiny *****.
- ReyX, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3The triumphant veiny bastard?
- datcrazydj, on 03/27/2008, -9/+11HL2:EP2 ending?
- hinmanj, on 03/27/2008, -1/+33MSNBC: Stop making video game lists (especially on multiple pages)
Also... Don't give away the #1 item on the list by showing a picture of Aeris on the first page. - Wargalas, on 03/27/2008, -2/+85I was shocked when Duke Nukem told a boss right before the fight "I'm gonna rip your head off and ***** down your neck", then when you do kill the boss, they show him doing it.
- Wargalas, on 03/27/2008, -1/+33And here's the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAwbzf9WdE4- LBobRife, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2That.....is awesome.
- bweltondav, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3For a moment I was convinced a rick-roll was on the way...
- rpapi100, on 03/27/2008, -0/+12Agree, even if Kotor, FF7 and pals all offered good strong plot twist, that 10 sec. clip of Nukem litterally ***** down his neck was pretty awsome considering what was being done at the time. Another game taken from the same womb as Duke Nukem is Shadow Warrior. Lots of *****, puns and bunnies getting it on... oh and probably the only shooter we're the melee weapon is fun to play with AND powerful... the Katana!
- jedimasta, on 03/27/2008, -3/+10Damned if I didn't expect a RickRoll link there.
- Wargalas, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Sorry, I'll post a rick roll for you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU
There ya go buddy!
- Wargalas, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Sorry, I'll post a rick roll for you:
- Wargalas, on 03/27/2008, -1/+33And here's the video:
- DrMilkdad, on 03/27/2008, -5/+5I haven't read this yet, or any comments or anything. And I'm going to assume 'Aries dies' is on this list.
lets see if I'm right- DrMilkdad, on 03/27/2008, -3/+3surprise, surprise....... What would really be shocking if there was a list like this that didn't include 'Aries dies'.
Now please. start telling me about how you cried when this happened.... Because I'm really not sick of hearing about it.- LBobRife, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5Just because it's overdone doesn't mean it wasn't surprising the first time you played.
- DrMilkdad, on 03/27/2008, -3/+3surprise, surprise....... What would really be shocking if there was a list like this that didn't include 'Aries dies'.
- PhonicUK, on 03/27/2008, -11/+19No HL2:EP2? Seeing Eli Vance being killed at the end is a defining moment in gaming history!
- zaferk, on 03/28/2008, -5/+5OMG ***** YOU
- frieddonuts, on 03/28/2008, -0/+8I'm usually pretty detached when I'm playin a game, but that scene was actually pretty disturbing to me, considering what an important character he's been.
- Halfling64, on 03/28/2008, -4/+3***** YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
- Genma, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1oh please like you didn't know everyone and their bro was going to be one upping this pos article.
- Sogui, on 03/27/2008, -8/+13The big "reveal" in KoToR was one of the few moments in gaming where I got chills down my spine.
I'd also have to add "Would you Kindly" from Bioshock and "Your character dies" from Call of Duty 4 as more recent examples.
CoD4 is one of the few games in recent memory where they outright kill one of your character that you play the game through. Sure it's not like an RPG, we didn't have back-story on our marine, but in some ways it just felt so powerful. "Would you Kindly" was also a pretty big twist for me, and while the plot twist was already pretty exciting, the dramatic scene with the golf club just put it over the top.- pnmoore, on 03/28/2008, -0/+8"Would you kindly" was definitely one of the best.
- joegibes, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1I liked the end of CoD4... (not the Epilogue, but the end of the last mission). It was pretty sweet - but I guess not much of a shock.
- Sogui, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1The ending of CoD4 was pretty intense, but when you died in the nuclear blast, I was caught off guard.
I saw the blast, but when the heli went down and didn't instantly explode I assumed that somehow my character would make it. Then when they flashed back to my character and I took control of him again, I again assumed that they were using this as a visual "show of force" but that they wouldn't go as far as killing me off. Then when I collapsed and the "KIA" message came up, I was definitely shocked.- Chirp08, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1it took me 30 seconds or so to realize i had control at htat point, that was such an intense moment, you literally felt like it had just happened to YOU. best single player ever in a war game IMO, it always felt like i was really there.
- kujo740, on 03/27/2008, -8/+13That list kind of..uhm..
Sucked. - Sharpezor, on 03/27/2008, -3/+5What about when Gordon freeman messed up the device in HL1?
- CaLeDee, on 03/27/2008, -10/+5Am I the only one that didn't give a ***** when Aeris died? I didn't like her anyway.
- npcabral, on 03/27/2008, -2/+4Amen..what a whiny bitch.
- thecrazyd, on 03/27/2008, -0/+9I knew this comment would have been buried. Tifa was hotter, and actually had a personality. Oh no, boring generic shy anime girl got stabbed, and I was too stupid to use a Phoenix Down!
- TheZorch, on 03/27/2008, -3/+3You two asshats want to be flamed don't you.
- npcabral, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3Yes. Yes I do. Crazy is right.... Aeris is a cliche, generic. FLAME ON!!!!!
FFVII fanboys make me sick. FF didnt start with Playstation.
- proghead, on 03/27/2008, -1/+59please... Aeris's death in FFVII was a shock, but nothing near the twist revealed later - that the main character was a schizophrenic who had fabricated a whole life and convinced himself and everyone around him that he was someone else... that was pure *****, plain and simple.
- npcabral, on 03/27/2008, -1/+4Dugg.
- LBobRife, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6Well, not schizophrenic in the literal sense of the term, but he did have multiple influences on his head. It's also a pretty big ***** when you realize it's not Sephiroth or Jenova that is the ultimate evil of the game, but Hojo.
- darthchaosrspw, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Hojo was the Josef Mengele of FF7.
- YourDoom123, on 03/30/2008, -0/+1and what about all the unanswered questions? was sephiroth even alive for the events of the game? did the world survive meteor/holy (granted that all the other games/movies "answer" this question, but if you take ff7 as a standalone as it was originally intended)?
- yohnstoppable, on 03/28/2008, -2/+2Why was her death even that big a deal? Characters die in video games all the time, and I didn't see her death as all that special. In fact, I was happy to not have to play as the ***** flower girl anymore.
- InnerBlueAbyss, on 03/28/2008, -2/+4You sir, can go to hell.
- psibladeZX, on 03/31/2008, -0/+0That was insane and confusing as all hell with the whole zack/cloud thing... dugg
- web2pointYo, on 03/27/2008, -5/+9Metal Gear - Solid. Death of Sniper Wolf
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wriaT32v2T0- Timmyftw, on 03/27/2008, -0/+15That wasnt shocking....you spend 10 or so minutes shooting at her. I think its safe to say you expect the thing you are shooting at to die.
- thecrazyd, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5Yeah, not shocking, but a very solid gaming moment.
- Monkeywr3nch, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6Grey Fox's death after being crushed by Rex was much more shocking to me. After Snake, he's the game's best character IMHO
- peacebyanymeans, on 03/30/2008, -0/+2HURT ME, SNAKE! HURT ME MORE, DAWG!
- thefreshjive, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3The MGS series all had shocking moments but the most shocking was in Sons of Liberty in the beginning of the Big Shell Facility as your swimming up your expecting to be playing Solid Snake, but as the mask comes off you're this pale white gay douche bag that does cart wheels instead of rolls.
- Pillage, on 03/28/2008, -0/+3that was more disappointing then it was shocking.
- Pillage, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2What about when E.E. dies in Sons of Liberty?
- SteelFrog, on 03/28/2008, -1/+4Fission Mailed.
- falkonv7l, on 03/27/2008, -0/+5Yes, the dogs did make me jump and panic! that was sweet, given the many times games have tried to make people jump.
- jasonsalas, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1it wasn't the dogs that got me...it was that dang alligator that leaps out of the subway. :-)
- ahoyhoy, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Poseidon in the research tank, or Lisa in the REmake.
- briguymaine, on 03/27/2008, -2/+10first time I saw a Berserker
- Cyber_Akuma, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Thats more of an "Oh *****!" moment
Especially when you see him breaking through pillars and walls in a mad dash to get at you- MrMuffMeat, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1That was actually a she and not a he, which makes it even more shocking. All Berserkers are female in GoW.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Thats more of an "Oh *****!" moment
- npcabral, on 03/27/2008, -13/+8OMG Aeris/Sephiroth is so overrated. Tifa was so much hotter. (and useful) Sephiroth was just some metrosexual with a long sword that apparently made up for other inadequacies. Kefka FTW.
- LBobRife, on 03/27/2008, -1/+9Take it to a video game forum.
- thecrazyd, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4Man, VII fanboys are brutal. I dugg you. VI is the greatest!
- sgtpppr, on 03/28/2008, -2/+1Pre-VII fanboys are even worse. They make it a point to comment on every single story relating to Square or FF just to inform everyone that everything but the NES and SNES FF games suck. It's been over 10 years and they STILL haven't moved on.
- npcabral, on 03/28/2008, -2/+0Sephiroth is overrated man... looks like he came out of a jude law how to dress for success catalog.
I bet you walk around in all black huh... its cool... You are prolly trying to be "different"
- npcabral, on 03/28/2008, -2/+0Sephiroth is overrated man... looks like he came out of a jude law how to dress for success catalog.

- darthchaosrspw, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Where's the Yuffie love?!
- darthchaosrspw, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1"Tifa was so much hotter."
Uh, Tifa's just a set of computer-generated polygons. She isn't real. Same goes with Aerith, Yuffie, Lara Croft, and every video game vixen ever created.
- kyle212, on 03/27/2008, -0/+16What about at the end of MGS 3 when it turns out the boss was actually on your side all along and gave her life for her country!
- bagelmaster, on 03/28/2008, -3/+4MGS games don't count because they make no ***** sense!
- Shadow82v, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Or you don't take enough time to understand them....
- jc7012, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4What about at the end of MGS 2...when Raiden found out...uhh...that...***** i really don't know what happened there...
- DarkDx, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1The first time I finished the game I was like WTF. It tooke me 3 ***** MORE TIMES to fully understand the whole thing.
- bagelmaster, on 03/28/2008, -3/+4MGS games don't count because they make no ***** sense!
- WVUChrisF, on 03/27/2008, -1/+4dugg for KOTOR
- Recluse, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Same here.
- damnitkitty, on 03/27/2008, -1/+6Not that I think this should have necessarily been on the list, but one of my favorite shocking moments was in Chrono Cross when Serge and Lynx switch bodies. The game just sits there until you get impatient enough to try and walk away and then you suddenly realize you're no longer in your own body. Freaking brilliant.
- MadNuke, on 03/27/2008, -0/+12MSNBC + Video game news = "LucasArts found a way to keep it real in “Knights of the Old Republic.”"
...- Xondar, on 03/28/2008, -0/+5They should have given BioWare credit for that great game.
- Laqrhead, on 03/27/2008, -5/+15When Sephiroth killed Areis, I threw the controller down, shut off the TV, and didn't play the game for weeks. It still upsets me. :)
- bagelmaster, on 03/28/2008, -6/+1No one cares
- Neverclear, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4You should never tell anybody that again.
- feckineejit, on 03/27/2008, -1/+19For me it was the death of Eli Vance in HL2 Ep 2 especially since I couldn't do anything about it. I hope I can do something about it in Ep3
- petebot, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2SPOILER ALERT DOUCHE
- SkippyDoorknob, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4Rescue on Fractalus
The first time you land to rescue a guy but it turns up he's not a pilot but an alien in disguise and pops up in front of the ship and punches through the window. More of a startling moment than a shocking moment I guess. It was a lesson you learned fast: Keep you finger on the shield button just in case the next one is an alien...- Matt2k, on 03/28/2008, -0/+4Yes! I was seven or eight when I played that game on the Atari 800 and it scared the ***** out of me every time. It played this WAAAAH!~ sound when they jumped up at your window pounding their fists through the glass. And if you opened the hatch and let them into the ship, you could hear them as they busted the door down to the *****. That was intense.
- Petrushka72, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Oh hell yes. That made me shriek out loud. I was always reluctant to pick up pilots after that, and I always worried that even if the pilot had a white helmet it might still be an alien. That sound of knocking on the door always had me sweating. Of course, I was about 10 at the time :-)
- Dush, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6It wasn't some mind bending plot twist but for pure shock value: Eternal Darkness bathroom.
- pnmoore, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2Yes! Forgot that one. What a great game!
- quisph, on 03/27/2008, -0/+42The most shocking moment for me was the time I realized I had been playing Tetris for seven hours straight.
- Dush, on 03/28/2008, -0/+0And then the straight piece suddenly bends into one of the backward S pieces right as you are dropping it in for the sweet four line Tetris to break your old record and keep the game going but instead it causes your stack to go too high and it's game over and you're like WTF!?!
- Chirp08, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1the tetris game on my cell phone has a timer, I've cracked the 8 hour mark haha
- ZeroSumDivide, on 03/27/2008, -8/+3Buried as innacurate--FFVII's "shocking moment" is number one. Kefka destroying the world and/or poisoning Doma should have been #1.
- LBobRife, on 03/27/2008, -1/+6It's all opinions. It can't really be "inaccurate".
- sotthapana, on 03/28/2008, -0/+6Kefka was definitely a prick
- shoc, on 03/28/2008, -0/+2kefka was pretty much the coolest bad guy ever. i mean, what's better than a maniac clown out to ruin you?
- artfiend77, on 03/27/2008, -6/+1This was a ***** waste of my time, ***** you MSNBC...***** you and your mom.
