- UnarmedHippo, on 08/25/2009, -0/+57My social life will go down the drain when this and Diablo 3 are both released.
- vbullinger, on 08/26/2009, -0/+31See, the trick is to not _have_ a social life to begin with...
Wait... - joemofo214, on 08/26/2009, -0/+30Who are you kidding?
- dalittle, on 08/26/2009, -11/+41No LAN play in Starcraft 2 is really telling. Sad to see Blizzard start to go the way of EA. When I see EA had anything to do with a game I don't buy it, hope that does not happen with Blizzard.
- SilverBlade2k, on 08/26/2009, -4/+31Do you have to connect to Battlenet in order to play a single player game??
- BaoUnit, on 08/26/2009, -1/+27This looks absolutely incredible. Cannot wait for the release of SC2.
- phpirate, on 08/26/2009, -0/+24Last weekend.
- icebane, on 08/26/2009, -1/+21Real life is overrated.
No /s - Terwa, on 08/26/2009, -1/+21If Diablo III is released on this, and we don't have to pay per month, I'm going to be all over that *****.
- Shaflugi, on 08/26/2009, -1/+20I think it's kinda annoying, personally. Now I'm going to have ANOTHER system I have to login to and have a dedicated friends list for. I wish they'd just use Steam.. especially since Blizzard only makes two games every decade, anyways.
- ai52487963, on 08/26/2009, -3/+22That's what I'm scared of
- jugglingjon, on 08/26/2009, -4/+21Blizzard is providing LAN functionality in Starcraft 2, it will just check in to battle.net for authentication and presumably record keeping.
http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/60156 - Hortnon, on 08/26/2009, -0/+17This.
All the other companies that aren't Valve just need to give up, bite the bullet, and drop their online services and just consolidate in Steam.
Except Stardock, but only because they treat their customers with respect...so they get a pass from me :P - redhawktech, on 08/26/2009, -0/+17Lan games are a great way to spend an afternoon in a university tech repair center when the students are all gone for the summer and you're waiting for the next client to walk in.
- vbullinger, on 08/26/2009, -2/+17This news is interesting. I wonder what Hitler thinks of this?
- muzzy, on 08/26/2009, -0/+15@ Kazbaeden:
You have to remember when Battle.net came out... back then, it was a pretty good service.
Some of the issues, like not having the ability to team with friends, were resolved with Warcraft 3.
But yes, it's in dire need of a refresh and what they're doing with SC2 sounds awesome. - sexualwasabi, on 08/25/2009, -0/+14sexy screens :)
- Kazbaeden, on 08/26/2009, -2/+16Thank god. Battle.net is the worst piece of ***** ever. My list of gripes include: not being able to join games with friends, refresh not working properly, very limited game sorting and searching options, having to refresh slots to get people to join, and inability to block leavers from joining games.
As long as they fixed these things, I'm happy. - DankBuddz, on 08/26/2009, -2/+16EA ruined Ultima Online; and that's an understatement.
- desolan, on 08/26/2009, -0/+13No, but they want you to. You can login as a 'guest' and play single player off line. They pointed out that many features, like achievements, will not be available if you do not log on. It was pitched as "you can do it, but you'll miss out on a bunch of cool stuff if you do."
You do have to login during installation to validate your game, however. - Psythik, on 08/26/2009, -2/+15A 23" monitor isn't that big.
- dalittle, on 08/26/2009, -6/+18That is the point, a lot of people cannot use it because they don't have an internet connection (hence why they would want LAN play)
- Tyrghast, on 08/26/2009, -0/+12People with real life friends play LAN games a lot. I get together every few weeks to LAN up some DotA, Quake, etc.
- Tyrghast, on 08/26/2009, -0/+12So it's turning in to Steam in that you can communicate across games? Cool beans.
- mwalker05, on 08/26/2009, -0/+10what i really want from battlenet 2.0? VLAN. make it work like hamachi. i dont want avatars or achievements, i want to play the damn game.
- dalittle, on 08/26/2009, -5/+15you miss the point. They are not including a feature that a lot of people want because they think that they will make more money with what ever they are going to get out of battle.net. Once you start to see companies start to not take care of their Customers it is a sign that they will not be worth buying from.
- masterandalf, on 08/26/2009, -2/+12it looks like it... if you zoom in on the picture under the Dashboard heading you see that it is in battle net 2.0 and the window on the left says "Start the Single Player Campagin for Wings of LIberty" thats bull crap...
- Zpanzer, on 08/26/2009, -0/+10you have to connect to battle.net in order to play with your battle.net account, else you can use "guest" accounts, which will allow offline play, but I'm not sure if that account will include your saves.
- koutetsu, on 08/26/2009, -0/+9People, desolan and kinseyincanada have the right answers in this thread.
Stop making ***** up about unreleased games just to make yourselves look like awesome anti-DRM crusaders. It's embarrassing to the internet. - Rhendal, on 08/26/2009, -1/+10It's called fine tuning the game first before releasing, so ***** like you who scream "RELEASE IT NOW!" don't go "OMG THIS GAME SUCKS IT'S NOT DONE" when they sell you an unfinished game.
- kinseyincanada, on 08/26/2009, -0/+9No it doesnt you can still play Starcraft 2 offline they said you will just loose some 'features' most likley stat tracking
proof: http://kotaku.com/5344013/starcraft-ii-can-be-play ... - masterandalf, on 08/26/2009, -0/+9even though these were both announced early in my college career, I have lost hope of playing Starcraft 2 or Diablo 3 with my friends at the same place.
- predatorpasta, on 08/26/2009, -0/+9why would you post in the star craft thread if you aren't going to be playing it?
- DRT23, on 08/26/2009, -0/+8Grades too :(
goddamn... - Ahnteis, on 08/26/2009, -6/+14That's not actually LAN functionality.
- EddiePotato, on 08/26/2009, -0/+8You'll be thinking about other people playing video games every day while you're scuba diving? Sounds pretty obvious which you'd rather be doing.
- Gregus1032, on 08/26/2009, -0/+8i think they've already stated it will be on battle.net and free per month.
- EggAndMuffin, on 08/26/2009, -0/+8lol @ the website's top right corner:
"REGISTER NOW
INTERNET FAME AWAITS" - zeazzz, on 08/26/2009, -3/+11Look at Xbox Live. Before you get a chance to change your status to invisible and load up something singleplayer like Fallout or Bioshock, games in which you don't want to be bothered with social-wise, you have a million requests for party chats and messages saying COME PLAY HALO 3 WITH ME OMG.
In order for these big companies to compete with one another, they are going to integrate more social features into gaming and everything else that isn't social to begin with. Once Twitter and Facebook come to Xbox Live, we are all doomed. - Mudcrutch, on 08/26/2009, -2/+9Battle.net is not a game.
- TheEggAndI, on 08/26/2009, -3/+10yes, but starcraft 2 is. dont be a smartass
- Brad324, on 08/26/2009, -0/+6Blizzard never released games fast. If anything wow has allowed them to increase the budget for games like starcraft 2.
- Shaflugi, on 08/26/2009, -4/+10That sounds fine to me. You can LAN in TF2, but still need to connect to Steam for the sake of stats and having your unlocked weapons and such.

- HyperionHK, on 08/26/2009, -0/+5you need to connect to the internet and link it to a B.Net account to activate the game, but after you've done that, you're free to play in offline mode just fine.
It's pretty much exactly like Steam in that regard - snake1025, on 08/26/2009, -0/+5*heard*
- Rhendal, on 08/26/2009, -0/+5Do you really believe that Right after Starcraft: Brood War came out they immediately started working on Starcraft II and have been doing so for 10+ years? You don't think maybe taking breaks between projects, not to mention other projects like Warcraft III and Frozen Throne might have been on their agenda before even starting Starcraft II production?
6 years would be more accurate since they started development in 2003 after FT came out. If you're going to blame WoW for anything, blame it for delaying development since they had some people on the Starcraft dev team work on getting WoW out the door, and this was before they knew WoW was going to become the juggernaut it is today, and way before they even announced it.
So really, if you think about it, SC2 has only been in development for about 4-5 years now, and with the amount of detail they have in it already, that's pretty average for a game of its magnitude nowadays.
Starcraft was unveiled in E3 of 1996 and didn't come out until 2 years later. World of Warcraft was unveiled in 2001 and didn't come out until 2004. It takes them time to get these games finished and fine tuned, so suck it up and wait for it like everyone else has been doing with all Blizzard games for the past 15+ years. - inactive, on 08/26/2009, -0/+4It took me a while but I figured out that you're using 'scubadiving' as code for flipping burgers and 'south east Asia' for New Jersey. You also appear to be projecting your own insecurities onto others via the word 'virgin'.
- kinseyincanada, on 08/26/2009, -1/+5this isnt true, you dont have to be online to play starcraft 2
