- Andrwmorph, on 05/30/2009, -6/+73I used to play WoW for over 8 hours a day due to my social inadequacies in the real world. I pretty much threw away an education at a decent school because I played the game to the point of skipping half my classes. I don't blame WoW for my prior mistakes, I blame myself for using it as a form of escapism. After making some real friends WoW pretty much stopped being interesting to me.
- Feldon, on 05/30/2009, -15/+60WoW reached it's end when BC hit WoTLK just dragged it in to the wood and shot it. i stop playing wow about 4-6 months ago my stress levels went down i can sleep i'm in better shape and my mind is 100000 clearer. never gong back to it. dont care about it anymore.
- C4Strife, on 05/30/2009, -3/+44All he did was look up WoW on wiki and copy & pasted every bullion he saw.
- inactive, on 05/30/2009, -1/+30I'm going to argue with this point:
"The amount of variety in WoW is staggering. The different sides, races, classes, and areas of specialization within each class mean that there is always something new to try. There are layers of depth that let players build their character according to their own concept or play style."
I'll give WoW credit for the races, although I think EverQuest had more races and classes than WoW. However, specialization and building your character according to your own concept and playstyle? *****. There are only certain builds that work for your class. If you want a viable spec, there's pretty much only one clear cut path for the certain role you are picking.
Go and play one of the older MMO's that used skill based systems and not a class based one, then come and tell me WoW has variety and lets you play how you want. Not a chance. - inactive, on 05/30/2009, -6/+35Virgins? Says the person trolling WoW players on an obscure geeks only website. Virgins are the people still playing EQ and Ultima Online.
- ZimbuTheMonkey, on 05/30/2009, -1/+27I have years of good memories playing WoW, but most of those were because of my friends and guild mates, not the game itself.
WotLK was just laziness on Blizzard's part, I think. The only proper raid dungeon was a rehash with NO new fights, NO new art and audio. It's not so bad for new players, but it was awful for those that completed Naxx back when it was challenging. And even now, they are planning on introducing a gauntlet style dungeon with "classic" bosses. Classic means rehashed to me.
Also, and I'm sure many would disagree, the Arena system is taking up too much precedence in my opinion. Classes and game mechanics are being heavily modified just to balance this part of the game at the cost of everything else.
I am ready for something new. If they want my 15 bucks a month, I better see Universe Of Starcraft sometime in the future. Diablo 3, of course, is a guaranteed buy as well. - COLstriker, on 05/30/2009, -0/+26... what do you have against EQ and Ultima Online? next you will be saying Diablo is for virgins! lol ...*looks around*... guys?
- ligyron, on 05/30/2009, -0/+19A point. This post doesn't have one
- Tanktunker, on 05/30/2009, -1/+19Yeah, WoW players are cool, fit and totally sexually active.
- sciencelovesyou, on 05/30/2009, -0/+18Not so much the "secrets" of WoW as it is a list of the "marketing bullets from a power-point presentation" of WoW.
- quixand, on 05/30/2009, -0/+17If you were to start playing WoW today, for the first time, no doubt it would be a WONDERFUL experience. Everything is new, you have SO much to explore etc. That's where WoW succeeds. The game is beautiful, the lore is excellent.
The trouble lies for those that played Vanilla WoW.
So you play through all the leveling, and all the story content. You're 60. What now? Raid. Ok. It's fun the first couple times you do a raid. Then? It's like going to the dentist to get a tooth filled. You're obligated to go, but damnit if it's gonna kill ya.
So each expansion comes out, with about a months worth of content ( which is generally awesome ) then what? THE SAME ***** THING. Over and over again.
I quit once I hit 80, and did each raid once to enjoy the content. I may or may not play the next expansion. How people can continue to raid the same *****, day in and day out religiously..../boggles - BoneheadFarker, on 05/30/2009, -1/+17Pssst! Hey buddy...is the WoW getting to you? Making you feel bugs on your skin and *****? Well I got some new ***** for you. They call it D3 on the street, but the full name is Diablo III. Make you feel real good and *****, without none of the hangover WoW gives you. Here...just try this little sample for free: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgbUSsblCSQ. Trust me man, you gonna like this *****...
- Mtown, on 05/30/2009, -5/+19Most of these are just plain jokes. "Gathering"? Cause everybody LOVES scouring the world for stupid little plants. "Crafting"? Nobody LIKES doing that, but the shiny items you can craft after the long road of ***** items keeps people going. But nobody ENJOYS doing it...
- Travelsonic, on 05/30/2009, -0/+12Opinion != fact.
Get off your high horse.
I don't really care for WoW myself - or tabletop RPGs, I prefer LARP, but come on, your point? - Spartandog, on 05/30/2009, -0/+12It boils down to a simple rule of positive reinforcement. Our monkey-brains get hooked very easily on reward-based games, and WoW is very good at this. The constant need to up the score/get the reward is just like many other forms of addiction. Because the stimulated part of the brain reacts just as it would a real, physical reward, it gets trained to want to keep that pattern going to maintain that positive feeling. It's like chips, or heroin. Or heroin-flavored chips. As long as you can stay aware that this is how you are being played, you have a chance of breaking the habit.
- Llanowar, on 05/30/2009, -2/+12***** you! Just because I play EQ doesn't mean I'm a virgin!
I have sex like 5 times a day!!!
Wait... sex is the thing you do alone in your room with your hand right? - ImYourRealDad, on 05/30/2009, -5/+14I know I'm not the only one who played the game and thought "14 bucks a month for monotonous mediocrity?" ***** that.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 05/30/2009, -0/+9Lean Pocket:
Step 1. Remove plastic film
Step 2. Place directly in toilet - inactive, on 05/30/2009, -1/+9Yeah the massive amounts of useless crap in crafting just to level up your skill is lame. Crafting would be far better if you actually got useful items from it. Odds are, your quest items are going to be a lot better than what you can craft for your current level.
- Fixhotep, on 05/30/2009, -0/+8Though it was simple, I loved UO's skill system. You weren't limited to classes and could make any hybrid you wanted.
- Thrustmaster, on 05/30/2009, -0/+8I was expecting this article to shed some light on why really so many people (myself included) continue to play this game. As others commented, it simply just highlighted what we already knew. Bleh, I should be doing dailies anyway...
- Fixhotep, on 05/30/2009, -1/+9That's stereotyping. I played Ultima Online a lot and I'm fairly certain I've had sex at least once.
- Smokeythebandit, on 05/30/2009, -3/+10The actual reason WoW is so addictive is because upon installation a tiny hypodermic needle is installed into your mouse, which injects you intermittently with heroin. That's the reason you feel so out of it after 14 hours of raiding.
- biliabong6, on 05/30/2009, -1/+8It really just comes down to the fact that WoW is 'overall' the best MMORPG experience. Certain games do certain aspects better, but WoW is just a more complete game, and thus attracts a wider user base.
- Loornadune, on 05/30/2009, -2/+9BC and Resilience killed it.
- Malarie, on 05/30/2009, -0/+7I think vanilla wow was excellent. I stopped playing whent TBC came out. I was used to play with 40 people in a raid. We were making decent progress in naxxramas (3 wings cleared) and Were at Ouro in AQ.. then BOOM! Guild split for smaller raids.. This is where i /gquit and sold my toon.
- BobiusMaximus, on 05/30/2009, -0/+7According to this guy, Runescape should be the biggest MMO ever.
- Travelsonic, on 05/30/2009, -0/+6Not everybody who plays WoW is a virgin... you'd have to be straight out retarded to believe such logic.
- Crosshare, on 05/30/2009, -1/+7One of the biggest draws of new subscribers to the game that this article doesn't mention is how accessible it is in the beginning. A person who has barely touched games their whole life can jump in and have fun in the first 1-20 levels. The real magic is how WoW goes from a very elementary game and can grow in to a deep, multi-layered addictive game but bring a casual player up through that system essentially hooking them in the long haul.
- Liability, on 05/30/2009, -0/+6
GET BACK TO YOUR DAILIES! - BDOUG, on 05/30/2009, -0/+6I understand why people play it, and enjoyed playing it with my RL friends for a long time. I cancelled my account over a year ago, however, and don't regret it one bit. My spouse is much happier with me and I've been able to get several real world goals accomplished with the extra free time.
Even though I do occasionally miss it, I don't miss the obsession over it. It wasn't just the time I spent playing it, either: I'd even waste time and focus at work thinking about the damn game (especially when sharing WoW stories with my coworkers who also played).
I'm not saying it's a bad or harmful activity for everyone. It was bad for me, though. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who's better off without it. - dserfaty, on 05/30/2009, -0/+6The author forgot one point, Wow supported Mac OS X from the first release, which made it the only MMO available on the Mac for a very long time.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 05/30/2009, -0/+6> "Nobody cares about the status of your life."
That's likely because he's a WoW player that sounds like he has a better life than most people on Digg. Diggers tend to only care about someone's life status if it's below their own and can be made fun of.
Need proof? Just look around at all the gross generalizations ("fat", "no girlfriend", "virigin", "living in mom's basement") thrown at WoW players.
People do care about the status of someone else's life, but only if they can use it to make themselves feel better about the status of their own life. - Brak710101, on 05/30/2009, -0/+6Without Resilience, the PvP side of the game would be retarded. No one likes being killed instantly because you got burst damaged, and no matter how good you are or prepared, there would be nothing you could do to save yourself.
- KingGorilla, on 05/30/2009, -1/+6I don't believe you have a hand. Enjoy your girlfriend
- bizchris, on 05/30/2009, -0/+5"The URL contained a malformed video ID."
Whew, dodged a bullet on that one. Now, if I had gone to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgbUSsblCSQ I might have been in some trouble... - daEvan, on 05/30/2009, -2/+7I quit that game only a short time ago and do not regret it in the least. You tend to realize how much you really didn't like it when you learn how much more spare time you have on your hands.
- Llanowar, on 05/30/2009, -0/+5No, nobody cares because every reasonably thinking person knows there are plenty of MMO players with a good job/life. And nobody cares because it's the internet, it's not like anything he says here is proof of it actually being true.
It just sounds more like showing off how great a life he has despite playing WoW. - kazamx, on 05/30/2009, -0/+5But EVEs system only works because of item destruction. When your ship is blown up its gone and a new one has to be built.
The only way for WoW to do something similar would be to remove repair vendors. When your item is broken its gone. Then you would have a constant market for new gear from crafters. In fact Darkfall does just that and its created a massive market for crafted gear. - Llanowar, on 05/30/2009, -0/+5Not everyone pays $15 a month. Different countries have different prices. Different subscriptions have different per month prices. And some people have bought a lifetime subscription.
Here is what I think why WoW is doing so well.
-Low system demands
-Easy
-Big name
-User base sustains itself, everyone wants in on the biggest.
-Friends, of course. A lot of people retain their monthly subscription because they feel like ocasionally playing with their friends, even though they rarely play anymore.
-And of course, the company. Blizzard has done a great job at being a user friendly company with good service that knows what its customers want.
And, while some people might disagree, there are plenty of better MMO's out there. But they often miss a few of those points, mainly the big name and good company, and thus do not thrive as well. Or in cases such as Age of Conan, fail because they fail to live up to their promises. - Brak710101, on 05/30/2009, -1/+6WoTLK is not the last expansion. This has been confirmed by Blizzard publicly.
- Nateon, on 06/01/2009, -0/+4I used to be on digg.com for over 8 hours a day due to my social inadequacies in the real world. I pretty much threw away an education at a decent school because I browsed the site to the point of skipping half my classes. I don't blame Digg for my prior mistakes, I blame myself for using it as a form of escapism. After making some real friends Digg pretty much stopped being interesting to me.
- amorpheus, on 05/30/2009, -0/+45% of WoW players is about 600.000 people, I'd wager that's more than many "bigger" MMO games even reach at their peak.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 05/30/2009, -0/+4I did, and it was very relaxing.
- Llanowar, on 05/30/2009, -2/+6Nobody cares about the status of your life.
The large active subscriber base certainly helps towards maintaining its popularity. But look at Age of Conan, 1 million subscribers in the first month or something.
If the game is crap no amount of subscribers can save it.
Now, I personally don't care for WoW, but there is more to it than just the userbase. - illinest, on 05/30/2009, -2/+6I don't understand the love for WoW.
I got burnt out on that crap when Everquest and Ultima Online were still new. No matter how you dress it up you're still just managing a database. Use 'X' when 'Y'. Use 'Q' when 'Z'.
Crafting is always included as a bullet point but almost never fun to play on it's own merits. It's just a resource for collecting money and/or uber loot. And crafting doesn't have to be boring. I think anyone who's played Harvest Moon can attest to the fact that 'chore' activities can be fun to play as long as they're designed right.
I was one of the biggest freaks in the world when the first MMORPGs came out but they taught me quickly that there's not a lot to offer.
I was so let down by the experience that I over-corrected into first person shooters for three years. - psycosulu, on 05/30/2009, -0/+4Not everyone plays constantly. I play about a couple hours a day when I have time to myself and enjoy my real life when my girlfriend gets home from work.
- Airbear007, on 05/30/2009, -0/+4@rubixcubez your just mad cuz you dont play wow and your still a virgin... (if your stereotype is true) then at least they have an excuse.
- Llanowar, on 05/30/2009, -0/+3Eventually WoW's population will decline. Once a new actual good MMO hits the market.
But it will take at least a decade, probably way longer, before WoW goes down. It will have its niche market for a long time after the immense popularity has ended. - Krissam, on 05/30/2009, -0/+3More common than you might think, i dropped out of high school because I'd be playing wow instead of doing my homework, stay up till 4 in the morning playing, sleeping all the way through my school day.
Fortunately I've quit now, and don't see my self coming back in the future.
Though I am playing eve, a game that is better in every single area mentioned in the article, except for exploration, without really encouraging people to play more in the way wow does. -
