- smacksaw, on 06/30/2008, -12/+129An article entitled "The Downfall of the Classic RPG" that has no mention of dice?
Buried as inaccurate. Damn whippersnappers. Get off my lawn. - Falldog, on 06/30/2008, -11/+124"Please start making good, deep, single player RPGs again. RPGs that we can become emotionally involved in. RPGs that have tons of replay value. RPGs we can lose months of social life to if we so choose."
You could replace 'RPG' with any other game type and it wouldn't loose any accurately. - Nysul, on 06/30/2008, -1/+74I need Baldur's Gate 3, and please don't FPS it ala oblivion.
- estvir, on 06/30/2008, -6/+67The Witcher is one of the best RPGs in a fair while. While we're calling for better classic RPGs, how about more adventure games and a MechWarrior sequel. ;)
- Froderick, on 06/30/2008, -1/+54I am disappointed at the slew of action rpg's and such. Where are all the good ole' turn based RPG's? The one where you can sit back and take as much time as you need to come up with a decision? Where you don't need to worry about how much time you take to plan your strategy? I know there are next-gen games out (mainly on the XBOX 360) that are turn-based, but there are A LOT more action-oriented ones out these days. As Nidis said earlier, it's like developers are afraid gamers won't play anything that requires patience.
I am also disappointed that nearly every RPG with a cool concept behind it is an MMO. I like to pay for the game only once, and as sad as it may sound, I much prefer to play alone. I play to get away from others, not to be with them. Also, my connection is too bogged down with porn to leave sufficient bandwidth for online play. - ytsohptwhere, on 06/30/2008, -1/+48Earthbound FTW
- grungegbunny, on 06/30/2008, -1/+43I like the old style of RPGs with turn based combat, designing your character(s) from scratch and choosing their own name.
Since the newer ones popped out you cannot choose your name, race, class, stats or anything that defined a traditional RPG.
Now anything that is remotely fantasy based even if its mashing your X button to swing a weapon is RPG and I don't think this should be corect.
Bring back turn based Combat! - Nidis, on 06/30/2008, -1/+38I'm mourning the loss of the classic RPG, too. Golden Sun, Paper Mario, Baten Kaitos, Skies of Arcadia and Tales of Symphonia all kinda filled the void for me, but how many years ago were they? It's like developers are afraid that gamers won't play anything that requires patience...
- zadadka, on 06/30/2008, -1/+38So not about Rocket Propelled Grenades then?

they dumbed down ff when 7 came out and then went into repeat mode by making subsequent yet crappier versions of the same RPG.
They refuse to keep the Chrono series going even though everyone loves it, they refuse to redo ff7 for the ps3, they won't make a worthy ff tactics title using the SAME team who made the original tactics, they didn't keep mitsuda around even though he is better than uematsu, and they keep churning out garbage games that are light on gameplay and heavy on bad storyline/movie like
We need more games with heart, like Chrono Trigger and FF6. - both had the winning combination - EPIC music, beautiful artwork, engaging story that made you care about the characters, and neither took itself TOO seriously - Intangible360, on 06/30/2008, -1/+35"Creating MMOs are ideal for companies because they don't have to create a lengthy, captivating story line, or put ton's of stuff for one person or a very small group of people to do. The world doesn't have to be as balanced, and they can basically throw it together very quickly, get it out the door in no time, and then sit back and collect out $9.95 or $12.95 or however much you MMO of choice charges."
The above demonstrates a complete lack of understanding for how ridiculously difficult it is to produce an MMO. Ask any developer who is currently creating an MMO or has and they will tell you that there is nothing quick about creating one. Also, I take it this wasn't written by an actual journalist? Otherwise they need to be fired for their complete lack of writing skills. - sk1ll2, on 06/30/2008, -11/+44People still read Gamespot?
- diggB, on 06/30/2008, -0/+27For me, BG2 was near RPG perfection --- an incredibly immersive story line, turn based combat (with options to watch all the geeky stats roll by), gorgeous environments, and seemingly limitless character options and spells to choose from.
- wayyy, on 06/30/2008, -0/+26Well then, what about Kingdom Hea....
Nevermind. - ItsLoseNotLoose, on 06/30/2008, -1/+26It's lose, not loose.
- lbmouse, on 06/30/2008, -5/+29"Call me old school, but I grew up with traditional RPG games like Ultima..."
WTF, are you 12? Old school is playing Oregon Trail that you typed yourself out of the back of a hobby magazine on a TRS-80 and stored on a cassette tape drive. - bmoretz82, on 06/30/2008, -1/+25Dugg for MechWarrior sequel.
- Froderick, on 06/30/2008, -1/+24Holy crap, someone mentioned Golden Sun, Baten Kaitos and Skies of Arcadia (all games which I absolutely love) in one sentence.
I think I love you. - ooby, on 06/30/2008, -2/+25Would it lose any inaccurately?
- logic11, on 06/30/2008, -0/+23I read the title and I thought of AD&D 4th edition immediately. A classic RPG involves a number of geeks sitting around a table with dice, unwholesome foods and root beer. Anything that involves your fancy electronics and the like is not a classic rpg, but a video game... damn video gamers trying to usurp our acronyms.
- CosmoKramer, on 06/30/2008, -9/+31Put a masculine character in an RPG and I'll play it.
- KaiUno, on 06/30/2008, -0/+22I hear ya. Isn't it sad to see even Bioware itself can't churn 'em out like that anymore? Jade Empire, Kotor and Mass Effect are good, but you don't get the open feeling anymore of a gigantic world where sidequests and the main storyline get the same amount of TLC during development. I hate Bioware for the boring as hell sidemissions in Mass Effect. Sure, there's story to be had, but did they have to feel like they came out of a random mission generator?
- AzzX, on 06/30/2008, -9/+31FF6 was the last great Final Fantasy before they dumbed it down for the western audience.
Diablo is not a true rpg - compare it to Planescape Torment - Thats an RPG.
The Goldbox AD&D games are technically more advanced than todays RPG games if you remove the graphics element.
Its all about style over substance these days. - psion01, on 06/30/2008, -0/+20A TRS-80? Son, old-school is playing Dungeons and Dragons with paper and pencil and figuring out results with the help of polyhedral dice.
- Bilabrin, on 06/30/2008, -0/+18You ever play the SNES Mario RPG? I think it was called 7 stars or something....it was great....and Shadowrun on the SNS too!
- MadceltUK, on 06/30/2008, -0/+17I spent far too long playing the Bard's Tale series on an Amiga 500. I still have a folder somewhere that has maps of every city and dungeon.
Ahhh...the good old days - JFallon126, on 06/30/2008, -0/+17Amen brother. The Baldur's Gate series easily goes in my Top Five Games list.
- jaredcat, on 06/30/2008, -0/+17polyhedral dice?
Old school is playing tic tac toe with a stick in the sand and adding up the score with the help of an abacus. - nuclearpenguins, on 06/30/2008, -0/+17I miss party-based RPG's, a la Eye of the Beholder and such.
- suckaPU, on 06/30/2008, -3/+20secret of mana FTW
- SSCrow, on 06/30/2008, -3/+19But Oblivion kicked ass.
- bbqsalad, on 06/30/2008, -1/+16Earthbound "the Mother of all RPG's"
- JonTheGoose, on 06/30/2008, -0/+15You submitted your own blog about RPGs to Digg?
You, sir, are nerd of the week. - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -4/+19Diablo3 is an arcade-RPG fusion. It's good, but it's not what they're talking about here.
Honestly, I think the style of RPG they're talking about is defunct. Turn based RPGs are fun, but why stick with the turn based system when realtime, AI driven combat is possible. The pinnacle of turn based games has already come and gone (Chrono Trigger) - it's time to move on, IMO. - angrylinuxgeek, on 06/30/2008, -2/+17Is this just some kid's blog on Gamespot? He is ignoring the great RPGs we've had to play recently. Mass Effect was one of the best games of last year.
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -0/+14Pokemon anymore? Pearl was awesome just like red and blue. They're not losing their basics, and they have not 3dish graphics.
- NJank, on 06/30/2008, -1/+15no, but it might loose some.
- jontalisman, on 06/29/2008, -6/+20Might & Magic fan, too.
- errornix, on 06/30/2008, -1/+15This is why I like the Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) series so much. It's evolved with technology, but the gameplay has remained true to the series' roots.
- OzzieAlThor, on 06/30/2008, -2/+15What do you mean FF's were dumbed down 7 and on? 6 is still my favorite, that doesn't mean 7 was dumbed down. Like 10 and 10-2 you could make anyone pretty much whatever kind of class and character you wanted. Hello? Materia Slots that could go on anyone? That whole uber grid on FF10? Dress Spheres?
Things were MORE flexible in those games.
I'm not saying you have to like them. You don't. TO say that it was dumbed down is rediculous. It was OPENED UP as time went on. FF6 you had the thief, samuari, ninja, etc. You could make everyone learn whatever magic you wanted eventually. Those people were still stuck in their classes though. You couldn't teach Locke to use the Chainsaw or have Celes learn the Aura Canon. You can now. - yohnstoppable, on 06/30/2008, -1/+14Actually it is a fair comment. Squaresoft WAS rpg back in the snes days.
Final Fantasy 4
Final Fantasy 6
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Super Mario RPG
Chrono Trigger
I could see all 6 of those games among the top games on the snes period. Nevermind just rpgs. - krustie, on 06/30/2008, -4/+17KOTOR, Elder Scrolls, Fable, Zelda ....
- zombie210, on 06/30/2008, -0/+13Ahh, the old days, mind you, in the REALLY old days we played Ad&D FIRST edition, not your pansy 4th ed. AND WE LIKED IT!!
- chongli, on 06/30/2008, -0/+12Don't let nostalgia cloud your opinions of past games. I went back and played Dragon Warrior recently and I could not believe how brutal a grind that game is. You spend hours and hours leveling up on totally crappy monsters and then you step across a bridge and get destroyed by monsters that are way too hard. The prices of the items in every shop are also way too expensive. By the time you can afford that exorbitant sword, it's obsolete.
- Serris, on 06/30/2008, -0/+12Boo for self-submissions.
- RegalBegal, on 06/30/2008, -12/+24Diablo 3?
- slvrbullet87, on 06/30/2008, -0/+12that quote was from the article dumb ass
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -3/+15I don't know. There are sooo many classic RPG's I still need to play, pretty much all of Squere and Enix's back library, that new ones just aren't needed. I guess if you are a diehard RPG guy, more modern ones would be nice, but I'd be just as happy finally playing FF6.
- dhelmet78, on 06/30/2008, -1/+13Auron. FFX. He kicked everyone's asses in that game.
