- clutchperformer, on 03/03/2009, -0/+30What?!?! No Myst? I remember how immersed I was in that environment. In that day, it really was unique. I even moved to the Pacific Northwest partly because of it. Now if only I could procure and island and build a Jules Verne steampunk lab and observatory, I'd be set.
- jehan60188, on 03/03/2009, -0/+28Rapture freakin' rocks. 50s Art Deco ftw
- Moonkeeper, on 03/03/2009, -1/+28Might not be exotic, but Liberty City is definitely fantastic.
- CoD4, on 03/03/2009, -0/+20We don't go to ravenholm
- Igrift, on 03/03/2009, -0/+15Fable 2 too won't take you away from reality for long, after about 8 hours you're done the game.
I would have added maybe WoW on here, that can suck you in for weeks. - inactive, on 03/03/2009, -2/+17No Hyrule Field?
Fail. - FFXIfrohike, on 03/03/2009, -0/+11Treasure Island Dizzy?
Did Yahtzee write this article or something? - DrDragun, on 03/03/2009, -0/+11WoW is gorgeous for a game with a graphics engine from 2003-2004. The WoW guys have a good sense of space and layout and they do a lot with textures to make up for the low poly count.
- gametavern, on 03/03/2009, -0/+10No Halo Ark waterfall?
http://www.ascendantjustice.com/files/cocop/The%20 ... - bigfatphony19, on 03/03/2009, -0/+10They seriously left Crysis off the list?
- bigfatphony19, on 03/03/2009, -0/+9Crytek didn't make 2, but still Crysis has some really really different and completely gorgeous environments.
- IgorUnchained, on 03/03/2009, -0/+9Dugg for Oblivion.....some areas/times of day are incredible. I havent played Fable II yet, but Fallout 3 is the only one that comes close as far as Im concerned.
- fantasyflamz, on 03/03/2009, -0/+8As a game artist, Bioshock is definitely my favorite. So much beautiful and degrading art in there. And Bioshock showed that a game doesn't have to be monochromatic greys (yes, I'm talking to you GoW and CoD) for it took look amazing and grungy. I loved all the culture and vibrant colors in Bioshock. And the water looked amazing of course.
- rukeypoo, on 03/03/2009, -0/+8Are you retarded?
- bjs3171, on 03/03/2009, -0/+8Drake's Fortune has some beautiful tropical locations.
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -0/+7Wotlk is absolutely amazing. I always play on a laptop with crap gfx, but one day I switched to a desktop and turned up the graphics and was blown away. Dalaran, Icecrown, Dragonblight... these places are amazing.
Despite that, WoW does prove that it's all about gameplay and graphics don't need to be cutting edge to be effective. - t0x2c, on 03/03/2009, -0/+7To their defense, everything CryTek makes is beautiful, and they did put FarCry 1 and 2.
- zosoIV, on 03/03/2009, -0/+7Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask
Super Metroid, Metroid Prime - Diggnabbit, on 03/03/2009, -0/+6In general, Halo (from Halo 1 to Halo 3) had some pretty gorgeous scenery, especially for an FPS.
- KayMan2k, on 03/03/2009, -0/+6Glad to see The Longest Journey is on the list. Agree Myst should have been added - even if the original version was just a series of pre-rendered stills... it is a fun world.
- ThatGeek, on 03/03/2009, -0/+6both stalker and oblivion are on there
- SemperFly, on 03/03/2009, -4/+10Zelda: Wind Waker
- razorc03, on 03/03/2009, -0/+6My environment only looks pleasing when I can paint it with the blood of my enemies.
- Lendon2020, on 03/03/2009, -0/+6No Myst? Riven? Exile?
- lordterrin, on 03/03/2009, -2/+7no World of Warcraft? Sometimes I just ride around because it's really pretty :(
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -0/+5Sadly, some of the more memorable places in WoW are being lost to time.
Maraudon, in Desolace is the absolute most stunning instance in the entire game. It's a 5-man dungeon level 40-50ish. But no one plays it, because it takes hours to complete and it's easier and faster to quest and level, now that they reducing leveling time.
Dire Maul, Blackrock Mountain, etc. - Legoman513, on 03/03/2009, -2/+7World of Warcraft definitely had some very memorable locations too, and the world was huge. IMO that should be on the list too.
- jokerslayer, on 03/03/2009, -0/+5No Hello Kitty Island Adventure? Sometimes I just sit around admiring the environment for hours.
On a more serious note, dugg for Ico and sotc. - fantasyflamz, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4That was pretty epic looking.
- MasterGrief, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4Listening to either JNR or LRR when I first got the game, there really were a lot of take-your-breath-away moments. It's just a fantastic feeling to know that you can go to any visible place in such an enormous world. I love city life.
Probably wouldn't if I actually lived in one, though... - inactive, on 03/03/2009, -2/+6I am interested in playing Fable 2 after seeing that gorgeous screen shot.
- pfhayter, on 03/03/2009, -1/+5GTAIV really should be there if we're talking about virtual vacationing in games. Still, solid list, dugg.
- bjs3171, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4are you retarded?
- citizencoolguy, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4Dugg for, uh, the dig
- RealmDown, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4Oh Worf, you're such a sentimentalist.
- DforSpiD, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4Also combine that with the lack of JRPGs ... you may be onto something
- Megadeth222, on 03/03/2009, -0/+4I agree, myst, even though gameplay is a series of pictures, it has possibly one of the most immersive environments/worlds i have ever seen in any video game. It really feels like you are in a unique and beautiful world, i used to just walk around and enjoy the scenery sometimes instead of playing lol
- squigglycircle, on 03/03/2009, -1/+4I don't think putting Nethack on there is a joke. It harnesses a power far better than any GPU: your imagination.
- AlKo, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3Those of you that love driving games... the north loop of the Nurburgring is one of the greatest locales.
- noumuon, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3aww... upset because you weren't smart enough to figure it out?
- inactive, on 03/04/2009, -0/+3Fail, owned and newbie (and all of their variants) are the trinity of obnoxious internet behavior.
- Fierdogg, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3Hey. I like this article...it will be sad when it gets submitted again and then goes front page.
- buckeye2012, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3COD 4 Chernobyl
- noumuon, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3getting through a maze wasn't that bad, you just never figured out the trick. you could either brute force your way and map the whole thing, you could always travel "right," as in whatever direction would bring you to your right (how you can solve every static maze), or you could listen to the sounds as you stopped at each point that let you know which way to go. there was a trick or clue for everything in myst. the real key to myst was keeping a journal of everything you encountered.
- inactive, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3I prefer the world of Lunar.
- Havoc737903, on 03/03/2009, -0/+3Dug for Stalker, Fallout 3. Gotta love desolate radioactive wastelands.
- finalflash05, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2WoW should really be in that list, the scenery and the locations in the game are stunning
GTAIV deserves a mention too..... - MasterGrief, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2Jeeze, talk about a joy killer, man. That's not how you make friends.
- VintageMud, on 03/03/2009, -0/+2Agreed. There are so many different environments, each with their own unique feel, creatures, sounds, and stories.
