- InfernoX, on 03/20/2009, -1/+11I was going to digg you up but then you started bitching about replays.
***** you man, replays allow people to learn the game faster and share strategies with other players. Whining about how players didn't have to play 2000 games to learn is just stupid. - skipdog172, on 03/20/2009, -0/+10yeeeeeah TIME TO GET PREPARED FOR STARCRAFT 2 WOOOOOO!!!!
- r4dius, on 03/20/2009, -1/+10Imagine what he can do with his toes

Yes, the WHAT is where the strategy comes in. Go ahead, roll your face across the keyboard and let me know how that works out for you.
Oh, and if you're getting killed in under 3 minutes on BGH it's not because you're not pushing buttons fast enough. - sexualwasabi, on 03/20/2009, -0/+9We require additional pylons.
- aceakm, on 03/20/2009, -0/+9Yeah? Whatd'ya want? I'm on it.
- dafragsta, on 03/20/2009, -0/+8You forgot one thing: StarCraft II is coming out soon. As popular and as relevant as Starcraft still is, (which does somewhat invaldiate your point. No one ever complains that chess is an old game) you know they are going to keep the default key mapping exactly the same, and I honestly don't think the gameplay is going to change 100% (for another game that's gone this route, see every permutation of Street Fighter II, including the newly released Street Fighter IV).
- belfastbiker, on 03/21/2009, -1/+9No skill involved?
I'd say if you put a professional starcraft player against you, he'd win each and every time. Because of his skill. - inactive, on 03/20/2009, -0/+7It's all about the über-micro
- tgc1, on 03/20/2009, -0/+7Did somebody call for an exterminator?
- tgc1, on 03/20/2009, -0/+7No, that's Warcraft.
- hamdoken, on 03/20/2009, -1/+7Starcraft is baby's first RTS in the same way that Final Fantasy 7 is baby's firrst RPG. It was many people's first introduction to the genre, and will remain their favorite forever.
50 years down the road people will talk about Starcraft and tell kids to get off their lawn. - djtyrant, on 03/20/2009, -0/+6Tasteless owns!!

.wav - eatmyshorts5, on 03/20/2009, -1/+6Did you even read the article?
- LethalGeek, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5Warcraft 2's two races were pretty identical other than the end game
Starcraft's three races play wildly differently and have no units that are copies across any of the races. I won't even comment on how much more complex this makes things compared to War2 as I haven't played both in years. - ry4nsm1th, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5No, the article was in English.
- DMXell, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4It's probably illegal because you can make the most used keys a lot easier to use. In his example, wouldn't it be easier to remap 0, P, 9, B and Shift to, say, Z, X, C and V? I would be, and that's why it's illegal.
- cor315, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4That is probably the creepest picture I've ever seen.

- nairbil, on 03/21/2009, -0/+4You can't possibly say this doesn't take skill. If you can button mash and do that, then you are some sort of genius.

Plus, most people who take the game seriously don't play BGH anyway.
Ever heard of maps like Lost Temple? - excalibre, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4Uh no. There were plenty of RTS games before Starcraft that will have introduced people to the genre. Command & Conquer, Age of Empires, Dune 2, Warcraft to name a few.
Starcraft merely perfected the formula. - d3dm, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4Why would a kid get near your lawn if he could stay inside playing video games?
- Wuss, on 03/20/2009, -10/+14In the next series, we'll go over winning strategies in Kings Quest 1....
I know SC is alive and well with a strong Korean following, but really? 11 years later and a hotkey tutorial? Remember that thing called "relevance"....
I poured 4 years of my life into Starcraft.. playing hours and hours a day. I'm inclined to agree that it's quite possibly the "greatest" game ever made. Greatest being in quotes because I understand it's all up to interpretation, but there are nuances of the game that you can't possibly discover and/or learn without having played the better part of your waking hours for at least a year+ for most average gamers.
The level of concentration it requires to balance the macro AND micro in starcraft, coupled w/ economy, offense/defense strategy, oppoonent psychology, etc. etc. is far beyond any game I've ever seen and/or played since 1998. Granted there's RTS out there w/ more units, and quite possibly "more" going on, but the key in SC's intimidating play level is the fact that it runs that fine line between being a more macro based RTS (i.e. Civ, Age of Empires, etc.) and still has absolute emphasis on the single unit micro.
Most of the best players I know were LAN center honed (as was I, and coincidentally all korean), and it's just as the article described. The only way to becoming "elite" is putting in the man hours. The only way to get better is constantly playing people better then you, getting beat, analyzing your game, and adjust. You keep going, and going, and going, until you have noone else to learn from, which pretty much never happens.
Why'd I stop playing?
One word... Replays.
When Blizzard implemented the battle.net patch that included built in replays, it became a matter of some kid picking up SC from the $10 bin at Gamestop, then just carbon copying all the posted replays of SC pros. Granted, a good player should be able to play past these people, but once you realize 90% of battle.net is doing this, not to mention the rampant use of maphacks, it becomes a futile practice to get any better because you never know the circumstances of who you're playing.
Prior to replays, I had to log over 2,000 losses over 4 accounts to learn what I learned. - metroidragon, on 03/20/2009, -1/+5I believe he means it's the hardest game in that it's the deepest and most challenging for professional play.

- mstrnn, on 03/21/2009, -0/+3Well.. I don't agree.. I played starcraft for the first time a little over a year ago. Yes for the first time. And I do think its the best RTS ever made and probably the best game ever. I've played lots of RTS before starcraft. AoE, C&C, WC3 to name a few.
With that said, I think people who first played starcraft probably don't really know how great the game actually is. - captainwaffles, on 03/21/2009, -1/+4Starcraft requires more skill than any other game on the planet. the two above posters explained it rather well.
- manogamez, on 03/21/2009, -0/+3"Those young wipper-snappers have it too easy these days with their fancy cars and computer. Back in my day you had to WALK home uphill both ways!"
Progress happens, get over it. - PaperJesus, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3Battle Cruiser operational.
- sexualwasabi, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3Not really since the StarCraft Professional leagues are still here, and players still making tons of money in tournaments
- darkphenox, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3No they already know how to do this.
- eatmyshorts5, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3Starcraft is now a collegiate sport! http://digg.com/pc_games/Starcraft_the_next_Americ ...
- XtheXlanternX, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3its a good day to die.
- InfernoX, on 03/21/2009, -0/+3I've never used battle.net ever actually, but I've played other RTS games that used replays.
Fact is replay systems allow people to physically show people strategies, it allows people to monitor resources from both players, see when they bought what and maybe even figure out why.
This just in, copycats exist even without replays. Know how many people play against other players and just copy what they see them do? Far more than the amount of people who watch replays.
I suppose you also don't like the idea of people learning from books and previously recorded information? Gotta rediscover the laws of physics ourselves eh? Sharing information is bad right? That's all replays are, a way of sharing information. In this circumstance, they're also the best way to share the information. - Cornfedhusker, on 03/21/2009, -0/+3If you don't mind your wife leaving you, then yes.
- eatmyshorts5, on 03/20/2009, -1/+4Remember that this game is the most popular game in Korea and people are still working hard to get better at this game. 11 years later Starcraft is receiving new players (like me) and this hot key tutorial is to help them. Also as tasteless mentioned foreigners play the game wrong and this tutorial helps them improve in the game. This guide is still very relevant.
