- Moegopher, on 12/10/2008, -0/+129[Force Persuade] You will let me play for free.
- Dumbledorito, on 12/10/2008, -1/+98"The Force is strong in him. His micropayment-- er, I mean, midichlorian count must be very high!"
- Appox, on 12/10/2008, -1/+91So people who pay more, get a better game experience and possibly new weapons/armor that gives them an advantage. That's not fun.
At least a monthly fee is set, and you know everyone playing is still equal.
Anyway, there goes me looking forward to this game. - matthias00, on 12/10/2008, -0/+56Congratulations, you now qualify to advance to the next level! For only $4.99, your character will increase in strength and be able to use more powerful items!
- Haroshia, on 12/10/2008, -3/+58***** EA
- lalalalamppost, on 12/10/2008, -0/+55This is not the MMO you are looking for.
- HCviolence, on 12/10/2008, -1/+54So they sucker you in with no monthly fees and then tempt you with kicking rad purple lightsabers?
- alkajazz, on 12/10/2008, -0/+49So basically they just announced that they ruined the KOTOR MMO.
- LOGNATR, on 12/10/2008, -1/+50Oh, crap. It's going to be like Magic: The Gathering all over again. The spoiled kids always had the best decks and now they'll have the best characters.
Remember when gaming required skill to retrieve the best items and endings, not luck or real cash? - PrettyGreen, on 12/10/2008, -2/+49nnnNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
- shaneomac27, on 12/10/2008, -1/+43i think EA is trying to purposely ruin PC gaming
- kurtwinter, on 12/10/2008, -0/+31Given the track record of Star Wars MMO's, the micropayment will probably be for just keeping the game running. "For 5 fps, its 3.99 per day. For 10 fps, its 5.99 per day. For 15 fps, you need a supercomputer, and a government bailout."
- Bloodwine, on 12/10/2008, -0/+30Even if it costs me more money, I rather like the flat monthly fee. There are no hidden costs or variations. I know exactly how much money I'll be spending, no matter how much content I experience, character modifications I make, or virtual items I obtain.
- daveyWSS, on 12/10/2008, -2/+27Here's you light saber, now pay us for a bigger one.
Oh, cool - shaughn13, on 12/10/2008, -1/+24second that.
- Khast, on 12/10/2008, -0/+20I am not a big fan of EA. They lost me with using SecuROM. I liked a lot of their games from the 80s.
- crs529, on 12/10/2008, -0/+17They're doing a good job of it so far =(
- inactive, on 12/10/2008, -0/+16Just do the no monthly fee like Guild Wars / Guild Wars 2.
- thespiff, on 12/10/2008, -1/+17I'm curious to see how that will work. People have the ability to buy WoW gold or items or premade characters online every day, but most don't do that.
Attaching monetary value to in-game items just means that every time you buy something you have to get past the fact that you are directly paying real money for fake property.
With WoW, you're paying for access to the game. The value of this is still debatable, but at least you're paying for something more tangible. It's easier to justify. Plus, with recurring billing, you only have to justify it that first time you set up your credit card info. - sneaker98, on 12/10/2008, -1/+15You can bet your ass EA didn't do this for *us*, people. They know they'll make more money on this model.
Dang. I was really looking forward to this. Oh well. - thesonofdarwin, on 12/10/2008, -0/+14Have fun with your Maple Story: Old Republic. Microtransactions are the worst thing to ever have been included in games.
- T8erT0T, on 12/10/2008, -2/+15Kenobi: "This isn't the business model you're looking for..."
- TVarmy, on 12/10/2008, -0/+12Personally, I'm expecting it to be like that episode of Rocko's Modern Life where he goes to a ski lounge and they charge $5 for everything.
- viper001, on 12/10/2008, -0/+11Microtransactions are horrible, and the fact that EA is going to include this failure of a business model into what could possibly have been an amazing title, further lowers my opinion of them. Don't even get me started on KOTOR being hugely popular because of the awesome voice acting, atmosphere, and fight system, all of which are going to be subverted to fit into the "cash-cow" that is the MMORPG.
- funkyloki, on 12/10/2008, -0/+10Hookers and cocaine are completely necessary entertainment.
- PrettyGreen, on 12/10/2008, -0/+9I take it you played SWG... I remember Coronet was like watching a PowerPoint slideshow.
- rokusky, on 12/10/2008, -1/+9I think it'd be more like "to continue with the storyline, you need to download the following patch that will cost xxx dollars" (displayed at a critical cliffhanger, of course). Or pay to unlock certain quests, or see specific areas... I really can't imagine making in-game credits becoming actually YOUR MONEY by making equipment upgrades a micropayment item.
- SupaFlyTNT, on 12/10/2008, -1/+9Aren't MMO's supposed to be mostly based on TIME/SKILL invested and not the MONEY you have? It's a bad analogy; games aren't real life.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 12/10/2008, -6/+14Popular Series + EA Buyout + Change in direction = Fail.
There is no way this game is going to be successful. - shaughn13, on 12/10/2008, -0/+7They do it in so many other "free" MMO's it's ridiculous. It ends up costing you so much more to get the good equipment it's so not worth it...
- mwalker05, on 12/10/2008, -0/+7every time you level up your credit card is charged $10. level cap is 500
- Ascus, on 12/10/2008, -1/+7Cash for better items not a good idea, I will not touch the game. However extra charges for things like additional character slots, bigger housings, more storage, and better looking items, no problem. i.e. you get a white light saber, but if you want another color, you will have to pay $.
- darkened, on 12/10/2008, -0/+6Securom 7 the current version has many levels of "functionality" albeit crippling is a better word to describe it, it can range from a simple CD check that requires no installation of anything and the whole way up to a rootkit like installation of securom that is permanently memory resisdent to your system and will not be removed when you uninstall the game.
The only DRM system that is worse than Securom 7 full virus mode is the late StarForce. - Surbrus, on 12/10/2008, -1/+7Not when you are the big brother, and the internet is in its infancy.
- Bloodwine, on 12/10/2008, -0/+6Like some cell phone plans, you'll probably run up a bigger bill than you'd think. Maybe I am being cynical, but they are betting they can get you to spend more money in the game this way than through a monthly fee.
- divinediva, on 12/10/2008, -3/+9In the current state of the economy, I'd probably cry at knowing people spend 200$ on virtual equipment though. Oh well ;)
- aliendisaster, on 12/10/2008, -0/+6everyone knows the WNBA is just a myth
- sponeil, on 12/10/2008, -0/+6If you can play the game 100% free, it will draw a lot of people to try it. If it's a good game, people will continue playing it, and many will end up buying things in-game if they feel they're cheap enough.
The biggest danger for users will come from dirt cheap items, not expensive ones. If something simple that you need a lot is dirt cheap (i.e. 1 cent per 10% heal), most people won't think twice about it until they get the first bill. At that rate, a thousand heals averaging 50% of your HP would cost $50, and a that probably wouldn't last a whole month for a lot of MMO players, making it a very expensive month. But initially most people would think "Wow! Only 1 cent! That's definitely worth the time it will save me to level up." - FishHammer, on 12/10/2008, -0/+6it means instead of a monthly fee everyone can play a ***** crippled version of the game for free, but if they want any kind of advantage over even the least powerful toaster-based monsters, they have to pay.
- inactive, on 12/10/2008, -0/+6AND THE RIAA, AND THE WNBA
- Sansui, on 12/10/2008, -1/+7Game now on my "do not buy" list. It's for the best at least.... after WoW launched I wasted a couple years of my life coordinating 140 people into 40 man raids 5-6 days a week, hour after hour after hour. I've been clean for close to 2 years now
8-10 hours every weekday after work farming materials or raiding low end instances? check.
16-18 hours on a Saturday trying to be one of the first guilds on the server to knock down Nefarion in BWL? check.
12-14 hours on the "off day" on Sunday farming potion materials to kill C'thun? check.
2000 runs through Scarlet Monastery farming grave moss for shadow protect potions for Naxx to be one of the first to kill Loathebb, and losing my sanity in the process? check.
Wishing I had never bought a damn MMO in the first place? check. - xxbrighteyed, on 12/10/2008, -0/+5it's star wars, it's because they can
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPPj6viIBmU
do you really think it would stop him? - etx313, on 12/10/2008, -0/+5This is exactly how Mythos was supposed to work, but the developer went out of business. :(
- elpohl, on 12/10/2008, -2/+7In fact, it's fun for those who don't have the time, like me! :D
But it's still not fun for those without money, like me. :( - PhantomJM, on 12/10/2008, -1/+6I'll hold off judgment until more details are released. For all I know, these micro-transactions may be purely cosmetic while the real gear is won or found.
- MattCruikshank, on 12/10/2008, -1/+6I've got no problem with a Star Wars MMO letting people pay to have new cool powers, while others grind away, learning valuable game skills, in order to achieve their own powers.
It's called The Dark Side. It's quicker and easier. Those on The Light Side get to kick their asses for them. Sounds fun to me. - saunders45, on 12/10/2008, -4/+9"Electronic Arts has responded to Shacknews, reiterating that "no statements have been made about the Star Wars business model," and attributing Mr. Riccitiello's comments to a misunderstanding."
http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/56292
Buried as inaccurate. - Yond, on 12/10/2008, -1/+6EA no longer has the creative intelligence to make a game without DRM or limited installations, that people actually want. They ruined spore bigtime, and after that debacle, I like many other people will never buy another EA game again.
If EA wants microtransactions in their game, then EA will soon experience a microtransaction called Chaper 7 bankruptcy. - Okodro, on 12/10/2008, -1/+6This would be a HUGE mistake, monthly billing would be the only way to make this work that would keep both the fans happy and keep EA making money. To use the micro-trans method would lead to the demise of the game after 2-3yrs once EA realizes that the majority of players would not keep paying for bigger and better stuff ever six-months and so their revenue stream would dry up and poof no more support for SWTOR as it is not a money maker.
I have spent thousands of my hard earned money over teh years on Star Wars products... The differnece is I actually still have all this stuff still and don't have to worry about selling it off to recoup some of my money before EA shuts offs the servers.
Its one thing to pay the cash for monthly, but it is completely different game to have to pay for a decent 'toon - DaDiggydiggyDOC, on 12/10/2008, -2/+7Message to dev's: make great games and quit raping your fans. Flat rates please, let me earn items "in the game".
On a side note F' E.A. I've never seen a company kill franchises faster than them.
E.A. is the GM of game dev's! -
