- profvegas, on 05/03/2008, -4/+38I really miss those cloth maps, they brought the game to life before I even got it installed.
- fkr3, on 05/03/2008, -1/+25I really miss Sierra and Origin. Those guys made awesome, genre-defining games. And also reading manuals in the car on the way home with a new game.
- AzraDarkness, on 05/03/2008, -3/+25Blizzard has always had some nice packaging..The cloth maps have always been cool :)
- PHiZ187, on 05/03/2008, -2/+23Article needs more pictures.
- chaoswings, on 05/03/2008, -0/+18"Nowadays, you're lucky if the typical PC game comes with anything more than a flimsy black-and-white manual, a couple of discs in paper sleeves, and a cheap cardboard packing frame. "
We have gone from bad to worse now. They don't even provide a paper manual now it's on CD. It's annoying to have to keep switching screens to look up instructions. Also I paid for the game the least they could do is give me a plastic CD case to protect the disc. I know they are trying to cut corners to increase the bottom line but there is a limit to how stupid you can be. - Pyroteq, on 05/03/2008, -0/+16EF2000 - A combat Flight Sim came with so much stuff it was ridiculous. I've still got the manual which is like 400 pages long. I hate it how most PC games don't even include a manual now, the manual is a PDF document on a separate disc. Who else misses reading the manual of your new game on the way home from the mall?
- TheCasablancan, on 05/03/2008, -0/+15I learned how to spell and type playing Space Quest.
>>Get Bucket
Say what?
>>Get Garbage Can
I don't see that here.
>>***** you, I see it.
Don't use such dirty language. - sexybobo, on 05/03/2008, -2/+16You just admitted to reading "Gaming for Windows"
- mortigon, on 05/03/2008, -0/+10wow... chex quest. that's insane.
thank you for reminding me of that kick ass game. - gfxluvr, on 05/03/2008, -1/+11"Games are bad, because they kill the environment, AND people."
- Future Jack Thompson - Llanowar, on 05/03/2008, -1/+10I miss cardboard boxes. Like Doom 3 for example came in.
Most games nowadays are simple dvd sleeves. And to me that doesn't look as nice on a shelf. - joegibes, on 05/03/2008, -0/+8Did anyone else think the Orange Box's box was cobbled together last-minute in Photoshop? Oh well, it must've been because VALVe was too busy making GOOD GAMES to worry about little things like that.
- cdtoad, on 05/03/2008, -1/+9Thank Lord British they included Akalabeth. I can remember this bag hanging at North Coast Computers with a crappy Xerox on yellow paper and thought... Oh this looks fun! Then Castle Wolfenstein was the first game with a printed booklet for the Apple2 :) Oh the memories...
- Coffeedemon, on 05/03/2008, -0/+8Probably not old enough for them. I still have my Fallout 2 wire bound manual though.
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -2/+10I miss my Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 boxes *cries*...
- Divals, on 05/03/2008, -0/+7You'll want to go to the topic above this one. Here we're talking about PC game packaging.
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -2/+8I read "Rock 'n' roll" as Rick-Roll. This is very sad.
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -0/+6I don't know how you would ever manage reading a book.
- ScottDaMan, on 05/03/2008, -1/+7I always thought it was stupid to have huge boxes with so much empty space inside.
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -3/+9Wow, why the ***** would I get buried for this?
Are you people ***** insane? Is there some Fallout hate in here? - djfreex, on 05/03/2008, -0/+5I hated those early anti piracy code matching screens. Enter the 14th word on page 60: _ _ _ _ , Enter the page number of Chapter 4 : _ _. Everytime you run the game, it would randomly change. Early flight sims were notorious for this. I remember leaving the game on pause for days; just not to enter those codes again.
- vagarach, on 05/03/2008, -0/+5Eidos released both Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy 7 for PC in a weird squared-off triangle shape! I still have some of the boxes from the 'large-size' days, the good old days :D.
- twertyto, on 05/03/2008, -2/+7What's up with the game "Akalabeth"? That name's a total rip from Tolkien (he used two L's instead of one).
- Ellipsys, on 05/03/2008, -0/+5"You think you are facing North"
"You don't know which way you are facing"
"You don't know which way you are facing"
"You don't know which way you are facing"
"You think you are facing West" - Mononuclear, on 05/03/2008, -0/+5I remember photocopying my friends manuals after copying his games so I could type in the stupid words to get past copy protection.
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -1/+6Same ***** here, I have the Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 manuals, I loved all the little tid-bits Interplay threw in them
- inactive, on 05/03/2008, -1/+6You were not a PCGamer during the 90's were you?
- lordmike, on 05/03/2008, -0/+5The huge boxes were a holdover from the 5.25" floppy days... The boxes were big 'cos the floppies were big!
- TechCF, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4"In creating Akalabeth, Garriott was primarily inspired by Dungeons & Dragons and the works of J. R. R. Tolkien."
- Jokermx, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4World In Conflict's Collector Edition box is amazing. The only thing it has in common with other game boxes is that it looks like a box.
I wish, however, that "normal" (as in non-collectors/limited) editions boxes were as good. - CoolHandRemy, on 05/03/2008, -2/+6Dugg for HUGE BOXES.
- Wyattx17, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4Reported for spam.
- oxdeltaxo, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4Most games I've purchased in recent memory came in a simple dvd case, with a minimalist manual tucked into the case.
- h4mx0r, on 05/03/2008, -1/+5... I didn't throw them in the corner...
Although admittedly the huge boxes were unnecessary, but I liked them (Then again, I had room for them)
What I don't like now is that most games use those damn plastic cases rather than the small cardboard cases. The plastic ones really feel like their skimming it and still charging us 50 bucks. - jakobmakob, on 05/03/2008, -0/+4Are you lost?
- nerdherder, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3Plastic looks cheaper and crappier than Cardboard? Really?
- dudeguy1234, on 05/03/2008, -1/+4It's all about appearance. If one item is slightly better but the other has a prettier box, it has been shown people most often go for the pretty.
- chonuts, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3Well, it's the same reason bands put forth effort in their CD packaging (i.e., Tool's "10,000 Days" album with the affixed glasses and Alex Grey artwork). They could've just put the CD in a blank jewel case and wrote the title in Sharpie, and obviously it wouldn't affect the music at all (or in this case, the game), but that extra stuff you get adds on to the experience. It's the same reason people still collect vinyl records and marvel at the classic artwork. We've all heard Zeppelin II or Pink Floyd's The Wall a thousands times over, but, like I said, it's that little bit extra.
- medulla, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3I remember taking my Red Alert/Command & Conquer manuals to Elementary School and planning my base build order and drawing out structures during class... Best 100 pages I ever read.
- jakobmakob, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3Are you lost? I can't believe two people did this within 22 minutes.
- BugMeNot2, on 05/03/2008, -0/+342 hours.
- skunks, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3I miss cool packaging, like Black Isle's BG and IWD boxes, manuals, and maps, but it's better for the environment to have smaller boxes, and online manuals (remember those HUGE CD boxes, when that format first hit? What a waste of paper). Sometimes I read the manual, sometimes I just throw the disc in and learn by playing, and I bet most people are the same way. Most games now have tutorials, or the first few missions are like tutorials.
- ScottDaMan, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3The right topic. Find it.
- crash331, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3Falcon 4.0 came in a ***** binder, like you use for school. I actually have a picture of mine on photobucket for some odd reason.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x189/crash331/f ... - bratterscain, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2I always kept my game manuals and boxes because I *collect* them. Also, what some people call the mindset of a 10 year old is relative. Some people would actually say people who insult others on a website about immaturity while having a video game icon as Sonic as their icon would most likely be considered as having the mindset of a 10 year old.
- Onyxblaze, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2Come up with a better name *****.
- jasonsalas, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2the trippiest game packaging ever when i was a kid was Zork.
- theboozer, on 05/03/2008, -1/+3By far, one of the better articles that Digg has linked to. I love all this stuff. I'm playing GTA IV right now, but it seems like just yesterday I was reading a passage from the game manual which accompanied Interplay's Lord of the Rings (PC). Damn, how time does fly when you're having fun.
- BugMeNot2, on 05/03/2008, -0/+242 hours to live, that is.
