- binaryloop, on 11/30/2008, -4/+68Second Life is boring as *****. There's no point. You wander around and buy fake stuff with real money... and talk to losers sitting at home in their mom's basement. Why? What is the point?!?! If you could roam Second Life with crazy weapons (like a Mad Max movie ) it would be a hell of a lot more fun. WarCraft is number one for a reason people.
- themusicalduck, on 11/30/2008, -1/+43I don't know why there was buzz in the first place. Most boring game I spent 5 minutes on ever.
- zinc6471, on 12/01/2008, -0/+30even neopets had battles....
- ricemonster, on 11/30/2008, -0/+28Neopets for adults.

YOU'VE BEEN ***** WARNED - shcon, on 11/30/2008, -1/+24It always boggled my mind when I saw ARTICLE after article about second life.... I kept hearing about it in the news CONSTANTLY!!! The only thing is... I didn't know anyone who was playing. I constantly meet people who play WoW... not only that, but people who I never would have guessed even owned a computer. Since I've been overseas with the army (not in it.) ... I've met five women who divorced their husbands because of their WoW addiction. (The husband's addiction of course.) FIVE WOMEN... thats alot considering all the great other reasons there are to divorce a man.
- ChuyMatt, on 12/01/2008, -0/+22Speaking of SL, does anyone remember the horribly painful CSI: NY that centered on SL? I wish some show would actually get computer technology even CLOSE to correct.
- ricemonster, on 11/30/2008, -0/+18I gained interest at "Se", only 'cause I thought it would spell out sex, but eventually I read the rest of the word and then I lost interest.

Tragically, their joy was short lived.
Less than an hour after the birth, an orc war party raided the hospital. The attack was relentless and the orcs showed no mercy.
There were no survivors.
RIP Evosilver Yoshikawa. - orangester, on 11/30/2008, -2/+17It's giving the appearance of a normal social life for those who don't have one.
- Repeater2000, on 12/01/2008, -0/+11You paying attention Sony Execs? No one wants a Second Life rip-off...
- ChuyMatt, on 12/01/2008, -4/+15"Is Second Life dying?"

RIP Evosilver Yoshikawa. - cadam, on 12/01/2008, -2/+11Pet Rock has more social skills and personality then most SL "inhabitants". Pet Rocks have gone further in the real world, look at George W Bush.
- nerdherder, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9I saw the word sex in your comment but was severely disappointed when there was no link.
- DeathJux, on 12/01/2008, -3/+12Second Life is a haven for pedophiles, furries, and sexual deviants the world over.
Do not want. - neutronphaser, on 12/01/2008, -0/+9But it looked so great in CSI:

Online Gambling Ban
The ban is hurting Second Life, after the ban all of the casinos in Second Life shutdown and people who were making a lot of real money running them canceled their accounts. Like prohibition in the 1920's, the online gambling ban is causing all kinds of problem not just for Linden Labs but for many countries where online gambling was an important part of their economy. Right Wing Christians are trying to keep the ban in place, Obama is expected to remove that ban, and the WTO is putting pressure on the US to remove the ban. The WTO should threaten sanctions on the United States for not lifting the ban. The world doesn't revolve around us anymore, Bush saw to that and now we have to live with it and he gets off Scott free. Lift the ban and watch as the economy returns to normal. - ChuyMatt, on 12/01/2008, -0/+6Thank you for citing your comment.
- Vektuz, on 12/01/2008, -0/+6From what I saw on SL, the ceiling had already been hit - it was roughtly as good as it could get.
Models were okay, but 1995-okay, and as good as they can be with that platform.
Textures and texture mapping was decent, but not all that good, but again as good as it could get with that platform.
Animations were importable, but jerky and could not really involve objects or multiple avatars. But because of the way the platform worked, that is as good as it could possibly get.
Basically, because of its history and the way SL was built foundation atop foundation like a precarious tower of legos, no more drastic improvements can be made without destroying content or making it incompatible. Which they will never do. So its essentially stuck.
The "modelling" tools will always be primitive (ha ha) and mildly ok but nowhere near as good as a real modeller
The "animation" tools are simply poser, they have given up trying to make them good ingame.
The ping and latency will always be bad, enough that no smooth action games will reliably work ever, just by the way the network works, and the ban on client-side prediction of any kind.
That leaves chat, and porn. And to be honest, IRC uses up only a couple K of ram instead of gigs, and well, as for the latter, the internet is better at it.
Basically, Second Life has sort of improved themselves into a corner. They can now paint that corner and decorate that corner but that's it. It can't go any further without a drastic paradigm change to the foundation, which won't happen.
Most of the "Role playing" that happens in SL is just done in text, like any IRC/MUD anyway, except its attached to this huge RAM-eating CPU-consuming program that displays uncanny-valley humanoids to you in jerky animations which don't match up anyway, and then the grid goes down.
No, the next step is not to improve SL. The next step is for something new to come along that has a better, more flexible foundation, without the weight of ten years of content that always has to remain compatible. - adrenalmedulla9, on 12/01/2008, -1/+7Second Life just sucks.
- eyepatch100, on 12/01/2008, -1/+6Which deity do you think would be most likely to answer that prayer?
God: "One life isn't enough for you people?" - araza13, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5I would say these statistics speak otherwise.

The bait and switch (Alleged) tactic by Linden Lab will eventually kill Second Life.
Look at the current CEO's track record. - SPRFRKR, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5I can't wait for the moment when the developers of the game, sensing an irreversible downtrending of users, just plop a pile of guns in the middle of the game and let a free for all begin.
- benologist, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5So you guys are saying we should have a "Second Pet Rock".
I'm on it. The time to invest is now. - da1e, on 12/01/2008, -1/+6comment from digg:

... as long as they don't really reproduce, I think I may be ok. As long as I don't ever see that ever again. Or hear that crappy song. - nerdherder, on 12/01/2008, -2/+6I admire you for openly admitting you spent even 5 minutes on it.
- WoollyMittens, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4If only people would place them at the start of sentences.
- panpizza15, on 12/02/2008, -0/+4Hell yea, if this game was just 1 gigantic world war game, it would be awesome. Think about it, robots vs superhumans vs furries vs cosplayers.
- adrenalmedulla9, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4Touché...
- kouchan21, on 12/01/2008, -1/+5Yeah, I couldnt stand the fake news the kept throwing at gullible news media anymore... "Cyberbank robbed in seconde life".. "dog lost in second life".. "woman kills husband because of second life"..
They probably had a pretty smart PR team - ericrous, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4Too bad they're not paying the SL programmers as much as they're paying the PR people. It's running on old graphics that are infinitely crappier than even WoW's outdated *****.
- ChuyMatt, on 12/01/2008, -2/+6hey. Don't diss the furries. They need someplace to belong.
- ryanonfire, on 12/01/2008, -2/+6Your mom loves second life. That's how lame it is.

- Suricou, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3The online gambling ban is a bit more complicated than that. The Internet Gambling Prohibition and Enforcement Act doesn't ban online gambling directly - partly because it was already illegal in many states, but mostly because the writers know that banning something on the internet just means the servers get moved to Elbonia. Instead it prohibits financial companies from doing business, directly or indirectly, with internet gambling companies - so even if a gambling site relocates outside US jurisdiction, no credit card company would agree to handle their payments. If SL were to allow gambling, they would lose all ability to collect membership fees.
- replaysMike, on 11/29/2008, -4/+7This is unfortunate and probably related to the decline in paid members - however really has little relevance as Second Life is doing ok without them.
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3I spent some time on it because I heard you can get paid for making 3D models. I decided it wasn't worth it after an hour or so.
- WoollyMittens, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3Was that including or excluding the download?

The story was updated several times including that Reuters was not quite dead in June
