- sruffelman, on 07/18/2009, -1/+41This certainly will make the game more cinematic. I still wish they hadn't used the cartoony art style though. KotOR and KotOR II looked better.
- Alverez, on 07/18/2009, -2/+34They are taking a clue from WoW and dumbing down the graphics so they will run well on a large spectrum of PCs. It's a smart move and its one that has paid dividends for Blizzard.
- hpodity, on 07/18/2009, -2/+32I am so ridiculously impressed by this. They're not understating the enormity of this task, and I also think it's fantastic that they're going to continue using the light-neutral-dark dialogue options, it's like they're bringing all the character-player attachment from their previous single player RPGs to the MMO world, mad props for ambition.
Plus if they pull it off right it'll be one ***** awesome game. - Shreder1, on 07/18/2009, -0/+20Personally, I'm just here to kill people and cause damage
- Pauho, on 07/18/2009, -1/+21Dugg for "If you could do a Darth Maul thing and a Welsh thing".
"At last we will have revenge, boyo." - Nerolus, on 07/18/2009, -2/+22They don't.
See: Age of Conan (Not endorsing this ***** game, just saying)...
MMOs aren't about the graphics. I think they did a great job with the stylized/concept art style of the game.
For proof that not all good games have to look like Crysis,
See: Team Fortress 2 - ChiefUCF, on 07/18/2009, -1/+18There's a good blog post from Bioware dicussing this as well - visit The Old Republic website and look for Developer Blog #10. One quote from the blog:
"As I said, The Old Republic is the size of at least 10 KOTORs recorded back to back." - Vindexus, on 07/18/2009, -0/+16Near the end where it shows some of the HUD and the name of the Sith player is DARTHEVIL.

- Sakumi, on 07/18/2009, -1/+12Well.. Warcraft III already had a visual style that was 'cartoonish'. It was easy to keep with the theme there.
Star Wars, on the other hand, should not be cartoony! 4 year old games such as EverQuest II seem to look better (from the video and screenshots provided - it's not like I've played the thing or anything). - SantaDuJuan, on 07/18/2009, -1/+11As much as I loved the video, we really know nothing about the actual game play.
- Vindexus, on 07/18/2009, -1/+10How does adding voices to characters make it go from MMO to SPRPG?
- jordantneff, on 07/18/2009, -2/+11I see what you're saying, but at least how I see it Team Fortress 2 has an art style, and The Old Republic just looks kind of *****.
- TwwIX, on 07/18/2009, -3/+11"Wah wah wah! Too much voice work! Wah Wah wah!" whinging in 3...2...
- Nerolus, on 07/18/2009, -0/+7If you don't want immersion, you have no reason to be playing an Massive Multiplayer Online ROLEPLAYING GAME.
- Nerolus, on 07/18/2009, -0/+7The bounty hunter was also named FETTO.
I think they were just being tools, they know some hardcore Star Wars nerds are going to pause to read the information on the HUD and find the next SEKRET CLASSES OMG. - hpodity, on 07/18/2009, -1/+7Having stylized art is more important than a high poly and pixel count, look at TF2. And sure EQ2 looks more 'advanced' but if you play the game you'll realize that the environments are boring and lacklustre, due to the dearth of stylization. It's not about making it 'cartoony' either, it's about making it look alive. any time I look at EQ2 I want to gouge my eyes out with my keyboard.
- crs529, on 07/18/2009, -1/+7Give it time, a game in pre-beta stages hardly ever looks the same as the final product.
- Hug101, on 07/18/2009, -3/+8EA will find a way to ruin the game, they have done so with everything they touch.
- etx313, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5I'm pretty excited about this game!
- ginogrz, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5I wouldn't get your hopes up that they will completely revamp the graphics, and they're pretty horrible in their current state imo. The character models look like they're straight out of Rock Band for *****'s sake.
- Jeremyz0r, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4WoW has more textures than this, nice step backwards imo.
- palehorse864, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4It doesn't have to be stylized to look exciting and good. Stylized usually means simplified in some artistic way, I.E. the cartoony art on TF2 that looks really good. Plus, Stylized doesn't automatically have to mean you can't throw in graphical bells and whistles too.
That being said, I don't think this game falls into either category. It's stylized, but it's not interesting looking. - KyotoWolf, on 07/18/2009, -0/+4The game isn't even in Alpha, graphics are incomplete and will be polished with the final release.
- palehorse864, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Too bad they couldn't have made it more scalable. Make the graphics snazzy, but put settings to reduce it to this.
- hpodity, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3thanks for noticing the importance of an art style... some people don't understand why I don't like SOE games and that's because they have no artistic feel at all.
- Ddraig, on 07/19/2009, -0/+3This looks like an online single player game.....
- jugglingjon, on 07/18/2009, -1/+4each class will have a completely different set of quests, so unless you need two characters of the same class, you should never have to sit through them twice.
- sadonomic, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2There's also the dissection of the video for all you need to know about what is actually contained in the video - http://digg.com/pc_games/Dissected_SW_The_Old_Repu ...
;) - riggs32, on 07/19/2009, -0/+2i want an mmo style game for a console. ive played wow and i love it, but its not very engaging to just hit numbers on the keyboard. Something that controlled like fable-ish would be sweet to play
- krasht, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2I'm just hoping that the voice acting doesn't stop after level 20.
- BooLag, on 07/18/2009, -1/+3Well if you go by the all the videos released so far, we actually know plenty.
- kakwakas, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2It's stilly Britspeak.
- Irishsmurf, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2Seems like they are biting off a lot more than they can chew.
(And if you are anything like me this could get annoying if theres no way to skip through, I always skip quest text if im not particulary interested or not in the mood to read into it more) - BooLag, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1surprise...
- MomentDEFINED, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1EA did a complete turnaround with me when they released Dead Space. I have a fully renewed faith in the company.
Besides, BioWare is making this, and if you can't see they are golden, then I don't think your opinion has much weight. - hpodity, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1real word, look it up, whining is for people who can't spell whinging (win-jing)
- sildude, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1to crs529
90% of the time when I get told that, the game ends up looking exactly like that. :( - freebird09, on 07/18/2009, -1/+2even though I like this idea, I can't help but fear that areas of high player density will just turn into "RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE"
- Cockjuice, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1And chew bubblegum.
- Nintendesert, on 07/18/2009, -4/+5No they didn't. Load those games up and take a look at them again.
- MomentDEFINED, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1Never played KotOR did you?
- subversive1, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Agree 100%
I wouldn't play it if EA paid ME to play it. - Zpanzer, on 07/20/2009, -0/+1I know I would..
- homercles337, on 07/19/2009, -1/+1There is no indication that this is an RPG. Its labeled as an MMO.
- eeeeeeeeeeeeeee, on 07/19/2009, -1/+1WOAH... At 0:53, I believe I have spotted the first Asian character in any Star Wars media... cool!
- jordantneff, on 07/18/2009, -11/+11I really wish MMO's didn't have to look like PS2 games...
- bar10dr, on 07/18/2009, -3/+3I wish they would concentrate on making the animation smooth instead of adding voices, looks very very choppy, I can read, its not a big deal.
Looks like a WoW clone with regards to the graphics, I'm sure that's what they had in mind. I hope they at least make the scenes epic looking. - kiddcode, on 07/18/2009, -3/+2This is how the illiterate people that play MMOs spell whining.
- punkcat, on 07/18/2009, -3/+2i think it was a really odd choice to have so much. replay wise, F if i'm going to want to sit through all that again and again.
its not really the mechanic of an MMO. they could be doing something totally cool, i dunno, but i'm not impressed hearing this aspect. -
