"Mouse and keyboard controls for movement"
Uh... As opposed to what? Futuristic neural interface? Bashing your screen with a stick? Being teleported into the game Captain-N style?
I hear the next patch will include "Graphical representations of characters and locations from the game visible on your monitor, eliminating need to close eyes and imagine what is happening." - wisedude, on 03/20/2009, -3/+29This was submitted a day ago, and no one cared then. I tried this game, it just feels like a poor man's wow. I played it for a week and really wanted to like it, but I couldn't.... Sorry, but I doubt many people who have played wow will like this, and I'm sure most people on Digg won't
- lilbugleboy09, on 03/20/2009, -1/+22Is there something about a game release that shouldn't be on digg? This is digg...the story is about a video game.
Not seeing your logic. - crazyhorse13, on 03/20/2009, -3/+21They should be a little more wary of evoking mental ties to runescape. Advertising yourself as a free mmo that apparently uses a rune-based magic system is not a great start in that regard.
- DavidTurnbull, on 03/20/2009, -1/+18Seems like a fairly random front page story. Nevertheless, I've always wanted to find an MMO that is free and not crap. Still not too hopeful though.
- Koushiro, on 03/20/2009, -0/+16The community of people normally on a free MMO tends to be worse then the communities that develop in paid MMO games...
- mrtracy, on 03/20/2009, -3/+16Did this make anyone else just want to play WoW again?
- TheWilder, on 03/20/2009, -1/+14I played this game for several weeks during the open beta, but it just doesn't stack up to WoW. However, it's a big accomplishment for free-to-play MMOs and borrows some elements from many other great games. Once they add in some real PvP gameplay like the arena and battleground modes, then I might come back and check it out.
- UndeniablyRexer, on 03/20/2009, -0/+11Probably, but he doesn't care enough to sign them.
- aladrin, on 03/20/2009, -0/+10You know what I hate? When you click a link in an article and it leads to the same site you're already on. WHY? Why doesn't it link to the site for the product name you clicked? Freaking stupid.
- mg128, on 03/20/2009, -0/+10CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2.0 GHz or equivalent
RAM: 512MB
Required Harddisk space: 3.62GB
Graphics card: DirectX 9.0c compatible with 128MB RAM
..if you'd have to upgrade your pc for that i'd suggest doing it regardless. - Jeez, on 03/20/2009, -0/+10Had chance to play RoM last week or so.
Pros
* Dual class system opens up lot of different possibilities.
* Good character creation system with ability to size body and atleast dozen+ faces. Giving you a unique feel.
* Good crafting system with ability to learn multiple gatheral and crafting skills rather than specialize in couple like other MMOs.
* Lot of content (gear and loot) and variety in quests.
* Fairly polished for new game.
Cons
* Not much variety (only one race Human and one starting area)
* Limited music and sounds, starting area had none.
* Graphics similar to WoW including the generic mine.
* Pretty generic storyline.
Overall
8/10
The game feels like playing WoW (imagine being limited to just the human starting area - Elwynn forest without the other 5). It is quicker than other MMOs when it comes to introducing players to new skills plus the starting quests gives you lot of gear/Pots to grind through quests quickly. In some ways like character custom, dual class it tops some P2P MMOs but in other aspects like class/races, storyline it falls far short. Granted that is not surprising considering it is F2P.
If you like WoW and enjoyed questing and want to try something similar to it definitely worth a try. The game does bring to table couple new features not seen in WoW dual class, mini games, Houses/Castles, good character customization.
It looks like RoM definitely set a new standard for F2P MMOs, would be interesting to see how they would affect other Paid to pay mmo's such as Vanguard, EQ, War etc subscription base. - UndeniablyRexer, on 03/20/2009, -2/+11Just play on a private wow server...
- ExoBit, on 03/20/2009, -2/+10How can you officially not care? Are there documents to sign?
- sageerrant, on 03/20/2009, -1/+9Get a real computer, Macboy.
But seriously, dual-booting is a nice option, and you should consider it. - OrangeTide, on 03/20/2009, -0/+7http://www.progressquest.com/ has no controls for movement.
- OdinsFury, on 03/20/2009, -1/+8Why does every MMO have to be compared to WoW? I've played a lot of MMO's in the past and I wouldn't even consider WoW to be the best one. Not every game has to be like WoW, it's sickening.
- chaseonfire, on 03/20/2009, -0/+7Basically my money is tight right now (ie,no job) and busy with school so don't have as much time for video games as I used to. I can't really afford my wow subscription right now and it seems like an alright alternative, i'll give it a try. I have nothing to lose.
- gazboo, on 03/20/2009, -2/+9Looks exactly like a WOW clone.
Not in the 'every MMO out there, WOW fanboy' way either. - DrCyclops, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5daniel8899:
What are you, some kind of cares-about-things guy? - Audi0, on 03/20/2009, -5/+10But you can't argue that it's a huge step in Free MMORPG's? That's what it's all about baby!
- dadioflex, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5The communitys are fine in either, it's the douchebags who're not interested in the community that are the problem. One thing though, I'd say the communities on free MMOs tend to be younger.
- RobbleRobble, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5What you talkin' bout, Wallace?!
- raydeen, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5It's a KMMO (Korean MMO). Traditionally they're point and click to move. And if you've ever played any of the KMMOs, RoM is definitely a step up in terms of depth and quality of game. Which isn't saying much unfortunately.
- Duggan360, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5I would say sucks to be you but you're not missing out on much with this game.
- Beerduck, on 03/20/2009, -0/+5When did WoWs source code leak? No, seriously, this looks exactly like WoW.
- 1iProd, on 03/20/2009, -3/+7Arena and BGs are not real PVP. World PVP ftw.
- Rivfader, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4I am just about sick of MMOs. After spending my teenage years on evercrack and my early 20s on WoW I can't seem to sit down and enjoy em anymore. I liked WAR but I just ended up quitting like after two weeks. I do not like raiding or care to take the time to do it anymore as I have more important things in my life so its pretty much pointless to play an MMO. I also got sick of all the dramaqueen balding 32 year old basement virgins and their constant blubbering and bickering on vent/teamspeak. Voice chat sucks.
Anyway I am just catching up on all the great games I missed on xbox360 and PC over the years. Gonna get a PS3 sometime this year too. I need to play MGS4. - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4Oh because BLOGSPAM of press releases is sooooooooooooooo much better...
- inactive, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3Its ok, if every now and then, a submission is not about how evil Republicans are.
- jedinate, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3Agreed that it is a poor man's WOW, but as a poor man who didn't find WOW worth the monthly $$, this scratches the online itch.
Sometimes I just like to spend time in an online world, it's nice not having to pay year round, just have that available, when I want it. - newwildlife, on 03/20/2009, -1/+4Ultima Online FTW
- jedinate, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3I'm downloading it now, to try tonight. It may be a WOW clone, but as someone who was tired of paying for the WOW experience, I'll give it a try. There is little to lose but some of my time.
- inactive, on 03/20/2009, -1/+4Yes, because arena's and specifically designated 'battle grounds' are the best way to pvp.
People have little imagination. - cabbas, on 03/20/2009, -1/+4What a slacke
- nerdherder, on 03/20/2009, -1/+4I don't think you know what your talking about.
- sockfire, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3Speaking as someone who has played both games, if you just want to grind and level, Runes of Magic is fine. But WoW is still WoW.
RoM gets its money through the sale of special currencies that you purchase with real money. This special currency can be used for mounts, housing, bag space, pets, etc. In other words, a lot of the fun character customization costs real money. Otherwise you can only "rent" mounts for 15 minutes or 2 hours at a time. I think I read that a permanent mount on one character costs about 20 bucks. - aaabbbsss, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3fail
- Philbert, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3I never understood that. Sure I loves me some RPGs, but no amount of online play is going to make me want to pay for a game I already paid for.
- daniel8889, on 03/20/2009, -1/+4r
I finished that for you - x0mb13, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3try Atlantica Online if you want a fresh free MMO. It`s a turn based MMO that actually works, battles kind of play out like a cross between traditional final fantasy games and tactics.
- FKnight, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3I was going to try this game, but I can't wait 2 years for the updater to finish.
Is there some law where software companies aren't allowed to put the latest version in their download links? - Koushiro, on 03/20/2009, -0/+3You do raise a good point. I suppose the actual "community" of a game anywhere tend not to be the problem. I suppose I should restate things to be more like "there are just more cheap jerks then jerks who will pay to play"
- Daithi1987, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2Its a nice FREE alternative to WoW, its no where near as expansive or detailed as WoW but Im not one to pay monthly fees for a game. Its still head and shoulders above any free to play MMO I know of.
- danwallace, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2He could probably play it better if he killed any unnecessary processes taking up memory before he launches it. My computer is kinda ***** but I have 1 gig of ram at least. I kill everything before I launch L4D.
- mabsark, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2'I hear the next patch will include "Graphical representations of characters and locations from the game visible on your monitor, eliminating need to close eyes and imagine what is happening."'
Isn't that patented already? - ChuckIT, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2Archlord isn't too bad.
- Arramol, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2@kealper - What type of video card is it? It always annoys me when companies put "128mb graphics card or higher" in their sysreqs because the memory size is only one factor in overall graphics card performance. If someone were to stick a gig of memory on a board using the GPU from a GeForce 6200, it still wouldn't run many (if any) current games.
- raydeen, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2@ Johnneblazes
You've got to be joking.
@ kealper
We're both sort of right. The main company is German (I think) but all the development was done in Asia. - WebWorker, on 03/20/2009, -0/+2So it's kinda like... Final Fantasy Tactics?
