- mmittimm, on 02/23/2009, -0/+122Anyone else remember the awesomeness of The Incredible Machine?
- Danrax, on 02/23/2009, -1/+93truly were the good old days.
i will remember the Kings Quest series as the epitome of gaming - Jericho6, on 02/23/2009, -1/+43I remember in Leisure Suit Larry (the third I think), you were supposed to make a rope out of hemp. Except I smoked it and floated off a cliff.
- viol999, on 02/23/2009, -0/+41I remember playing Kings Quest on my 8086 machine with 640kb of ram. And having to swap the discs because there was no hard drive. Ah!...the nostalgia.
- benjaminsumner, on 02/23/2009, -0/+40I spent SO much times playing these games when I was a kid, partly because each screen took so long to load on my Apple IIc. I even wrote a letter to Roberta Williams expressing my thanks, and she responded, too! I was glad someone did youtube videos of the King's Quest series... it really took me back just watching them.
- Beatmiser, on 02/23/2009, -0/+32I loved the King's Quest series. I remember on the Leisure Suit Larry ones as a youngin trying to take the quiz they used for age verification.
"Twelve inches is" a) more than I have
"Spiro Agnew was" - hypografik, on 02/23/2009, -0/+31Notice how the boxes artworks were AMAZING. Take that, 2009.
- spetsacdc, on 02/23/2009, -0/+27Ya I used to get the sierra magazine. They did a preview of half-life and I kept reading the article thinking how I wish I could run it. My dad's computer was too slow to run the new games so I emailed them and asked them to make games for older computers like my 75mhz computer. They posted my email in their magazine and said they use computers like mine as doorstops around their office.... Oh ya and I still have the 1996 police quest SWAT game...good times...
- Scrappy1850, on 02/23/2009, -0/+24i told my mom i was trying to win a contest and she answered them for me.
- DJCult, on 02/23/2009, -1/+24God, Gabriel Knight deserves honorable mention

- OneOfNone, on 02/23/2009, -0/+21Ah, King's Quest and Quest for Glory... Whoever owns the rights should update the artwork and re-release most of them on Steam. Before you call those games outdated, remember that gamers now had their fill of eye-candy and realize that good story/gameplay make or break the game. Kids and nostalgic adults will definitely have a lot of fun.
- gllopc, on 02/23/2009, -1/+22Although I'd throw in Space Quest, specifically Space Quest IV.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Quest_IV - minorthreat, on 02/23/2009, -0/+21didn't sierra originally release half life?
- Ghoztt, on 02/23/2009, -0/+19Sierra On-Line, Lucas Arts and Cyan's MYST/RealMYST....
(I didn't like anything after the first MYST)
Thank you! A great childhood you provided me with! - amitait, on 02/23/2009, -0/+18Sierra. I salute you.
- Opiatus, on 02/23/2009, -0/+18I played all the space quests for hours. Excellent games.
- Shawn4168, on 02/23/2009, -0/+17Actually, there's a company that's been working on rereleasing some of the old sierra games with updated artwork and sound: http://www.agdinteractive.com/games/games.html
- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -0/+17I spent a few hours one night watching playthroughs of all the Kings Quest games from my childhood on YouTube (which I recommend anyone who played the games back then to do as well). Holy hell it brought back memories like nothing I've seen in a while.. It's been ten years since I played them but I could almost remember the characters lines verbatim.
Did anyone here ever play Under A Killing Moon?? That game kicked so much ass... - Drahkar, on 02/23/2009, -0/+17Sierra during this period released some of the most memorable games that have ever touched the computer. I don't think there is a single person who had a PC during this period who can't say at least one of the Sierra family games were something they had played and enjoyed greatly.
Frankly i miss those games. - dstamat, on 02/23/2009, -0/+17Tribes FTW
- j0hnk377y, on 02/23/2009, -1/+1825 years ago.....holy crap it's been that long.....
- jerrycan, on 02/23/2009, -0/+16Brøderbund wants your lunch money.
- KerrSG1, on 02/23/2009, -0/+16Also, Hero's Quest, which was renamed to "Quest for Glory" Still have those too, excellent games that kind of puttered out in the final game unfortunately.
- BrewBeau, on 02/23/2009, -0/+16And what a payoff it was after the hour it took to finally guess the answers right when you finally got to see the chick undress with the blinds pulled all the way up. The graphics had gotten so good by then that her boobs were almost round. Not quite, though.
- aimhelix, on 02/23/2009, -0/+15Long live Red Baron!
- strum40, on 02/23/2009, -0/+15I'm still waiting for the Freddy Pharkas sequel.
- Scrappy1850, on 02/23/2009, -0/+15i think they published it. valve and sierra were almost neighbors at one point
- StaticThunder, on 02/23/2009, -0/+14This was my first experience with programming as well, but you would/should never write one of those that way. The earliest ones made use of a state table, where you could look up parser results in the table and crossreference the appropriate text. (Please don't knock my pseudocode)
//init state table
A[ ][ ]=(2,10,4,3),(10,1,3,4),....
//init room descriptions
description$[ ] = "You are in a dark room, likely to be eaten by a grue", "You are in front of a small white house.", "You are in a dank cave.", ....
...
currentstate=1
while not dead do
print description$[currentstate]
get input
parsedinput=parse(input);
switch case parsedinput
NORTH: newstate=A[currentstate][1];
SOUTH: newstate=A[currentstate][2];
...
currentstate=newstate;
...

queststudios.com - elmuerte17, on 02/23/2009, -0/+12you didn't read the article, did you
- gambl0r, on 02/23/2009, -0/+12I remember playing Kings Quest as a kid on my dad's PC Jr and marveling at the unbelievable 16 color graphics. Then I tried programming my own (text-based) adventure games in BASIC. Still one of the best games, and it got me into programming!
- DJMattB241, on 02/23/2009, -0/+12I remember Kings Quest VI so fondly that I occasionally find myself making a reference to it when talking to other people, under the assumption that everyone has played that game.
So great. So very very great. - terenceyap7, on 02/23/2009, -2/+13The best game I'd ever played from Sierra was "Pharoah"... *smiles*
- syncan01, on 02/23/2009, -0/+11Congratulations! You have narrowly escaped an explosive death! You are now traveling aimlessly through the cosmos.
- inactive, on 02/23/2009, -0/+10Nice.
If input$ = "go north" then print "You are in a dark room. You hear a scratching sound"
else if input$ = "go south" then print "You are in a small room, there is a box on the floor"
. . . . - BrewBeau, on 02/23/2009, -0/+10Yes! What a great game. Very addictive.
- rlutterb, on 02/23/2009, -0/+10I played every single one of these. Man, what a different time when the Internet wasn't around to provide instant easy answers. In Space Quest 1, I literally spent months trying to figure out you needed to pick up a piece of glass from the crashed space capsule to get through that laser barrier. How my 9 year old mind was able to keep attention that long is beyond me...
- RegalBegal, on 02/23/2009, -1/+11Conquest of the Longbow. I LOVED that game.
- octavian91, on 02/23/2009, -0/+10Quest for glory was one of the great experiences of my childhood...the first one came on 5 blue floppy disks. Played that one through dozens of times over the years.
- AirRaven, on 02/23/2009, -0/+9Aye- they published it.
They had nothing to do with the game itself, though. - inactive, on 02/23/2009, -0/+9Thanks for the memories.
- Dreamstate, on 02/23/2009, -1/+10Emulators just aren't the same. :(
I miss the good old days. - Crosshare, on 02/23/2009, -0/+9I don't care how gay you call me, Laura Bow was an awesome game.
- kiiwii, on 02/23/2009, -0/+9Any other Hugo's House of Horrors fans?
That's how I started with adventure games... - Hortnon, on 02/24/2009, -1/+10Space Quest is essentially the reason I have the job I do today. It's what introduced me to PC's, and getting stupid DOS boot disks working is what got me interested in HOW computers work.
I still have it on 3.5" floppies as a memento... - hollywoodphony, on 02/23/2009, -0/+9"After leaving behind his geeky life, he decides to visit the sinful city of Lost Wages (a reference to Las Vegas)."
Good thing they pointed that out. - ifruit, on 02/23/2009, -0/+8Download DOSBox and play them again! Most of these games are a few mb and can be downloaded online. I've already bought most of these once in my life, so I wouldn't consider it stealing!
