- deekismusic, on 05/04/2009, -11/+94The fact that Age of Empires II isn't on this list makes it absolutely useless, imo.
other classics not on this list:
Deus Ex
Myst
Oregon Trail
M.U.L.E.
Ultima
Sid Meier's Pirates!
Warcraft
Grim Fandango
MechWarrior - cptmichael101st, on 05/04/2009, -5/+72There's a fortune to be made in re-releasing these games with graphical upgrades.
- cnot3, on 05/04/2009, -9/+60FTA: "This game featured a soundtrack by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame, but don’t let that put you off." Why would that put you off? Nine Inch Nails ***** kicks ass.
- DarthBrady, on 05/04/2009, -4/+46Re-releasing with upgrades?! Hell with graphics upgrades, just release them so they are compatible with modern OS's and Hardware. I liked those old graphics. If I play those old games, I wanna play them the way I remember.
- spepin, on 05/04/2009, -0/+37Makes me want to play Simcity 2000.
"YOU CAN'T CUT BACK ON FUNDING! YOU WILL REGRET THIS!!" - strictnein, on 05/04/2009, -1/+37Please, when you make a big list of stuff:
Title (not just bold and the same size, but actually a larger font size)
Image
Text
[spacing]
and repeat
Putting the image above the title makes this article tough to read. - spaceaudi0, on 05/04/2009, -0/+31Monkey Island is the *****.
- FallenTurtles, on 05/04/2009, -2/+24TIE Fighter was better.
- Phate8263, on 05/04/2009, -3/+22<insert generic my favourite old game here> should be on the list.
- str3ama, on 05/04/2009, -0/+19there are quite a few missing
Commander Keen
Prince of Persia
Another World / Out of this World
Freespace: The Great War - yocouchdigga, on 05/04/2009, -0/+18MechWarrior was ***** awesome, good call.
- shizer, on 05/04/2009, -1/+18You've gotta have Total Annihilation on here... That game is KEY.
- TwistyMcFister, on 05/04/2009, -1/+17What? None of the Leisure Suit Larry collection?
- strictnein, on 05/04/2009, -1/+17Also missing: Tie Fighter
- roseap, on 05/04/2009, -0/+16Number 9 is already in the works: http://www.blackmesasource.com/
- MrSketch, on 05/04/2009, -0/+15Star Control II is awesome, and you can get it for free on multiple OSs with the port titled the Ur-Quan Masters at http://sc2.sf.net
Just started playing a new game a little while ago and it's as great as I remember. - shadus, on 05/04/2009, -0/+12True that. Xcom, SC2, MOO, MOM... The number of people I'd kill to have those re-released with bugfixes and graphics upgrades.
Incidentally, as far as making the old games work without emulation, if you don't mind paying GOG has a lot of good games for cheap that are updated to work under XP/Vista. - sexybobo, on 05/04/2009, -0/+12For doom you have
Doomsday http://www.doomsdayhq.com/ with the jdrp hd pack http://files.dengine.net/index.php
OR you have a remake of it in the doom 3 engine http://www.moddb.com/mods/classic-doom-3/downloads
Doomsday uses same wad files but upgrades the engine to get dynamic lighting the ability to mouse looks properly and you can jump. and the resource pack gives you 3d enemies and other models and higher resolution textures. Also supports heretic
For the original HL you have Black Mesa if they ever finish
http://www.blackmesasource.com/
for Duke nukem you have Eduke32 http://eduke32.com/ and a high resolution pack http://hrp.duke4.net/
Any one else want to post remakes of older games? - thefangedrabbit, on 05/04/2009, -0/+12It's not really in order of awesomeness. It's ordered by genre.
- Kingal, on 05/04/2009, -0/+11I think they meant system shock TWO. I'm pretty sure the image is from SS2 not SS1. I've never played SS1 but 2 is one of my all time favorites and still fun today. Someone even updated the graphics a few years ago and made it that much better. I think it was called rebirth. I might have to go and check it out again...
- huckdunsany, on 05/04/2009, -0/+11Good call! Many of my 5th-grade memories center around me and my friends trying to get past the cursed trivia questions at the start of the LSL games. For anyone who never played them, the LSL games had some (for those days) rather adult-oriented themes, so to "confirm the players age" they made you answer boring history and political trivia questions before you could play. Good times!
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -1/+11whatever dude <insert similar game> was way better
- strangewill, on 05/04/2009, -0/+10DosBox.
- stonebone4, on 05/04/2009, -0/+10Dugg for Lands of Lore.....that game seriously defined a huge chunk of my childhood. The "PISCATA ROSEA 4 4 5" puzzle/goof drove me nuts for years (you couldn't just google stuff like that back then).
- AltF3, on 05/04/2009, -3/+13X-COM is too low on that list.
- BlackJackJester, on 05/04/2009, -1/+11It makes me realize many games today sell based on shiny graphics alone. Back in the 90's, they were forced to focus on something else - fun. Unfortunately, 'fun' isn't as popular as madden.
- MelekTawus, on 05/04/2009, -0/+9Wow, he sure had a lot of inaccurate screenshots. System Shock, Scorched Earth, and SimCity are all acompanied by screenshots of their sequels.
- santeria49, on 05/04/2009, -0/+9It amazes me that Dungeon Keeper and Master of Magic have not received new versions. Especially Dungeon Keeper, that game is still awesome, but, last I checked getting it run on anything newer than Windows 98 is a nightmare. Especially after the (relative) success of Overlord, which employed the same basic style in a different genre of game, the time seems ripe for the return of Dungeon Keeper.
- miffelplix, on 05/04/2009, -1/+9Blood and Blood II should be included as well.
- Spacejack, on 05/04/2009, -3/+11cnot3: It may amaze you but not everyone shares your tastes in music.
That being said, Reznor's soundtrack for Quake is non-musical anyway (in the sense that it's just ambient noise for environment), so it's not really worth bringing up because there's no reason to notice it in the game. - duncan202, on 05/04/2009, -0/+8Sweet, sweet Deus Ex. Too bad that console based, poor excuse for a game piece of crap Deus Ex two had to go ***** things up.
- Rockout, on 05/04/2009, -0/+7I'll add Crusader and Transport Tycoon to the list of missing games.
- terracottapai, on 05/04/2009, -0/+7Amen to that. I get a terrific headache trying to play DOOM on a 17" LCD.
- mnocket, on 05/04/2009, -0/+7I would love to play upgraded versions of these original shooters. Game designers keep trying to "improve" the FPS genre but I miss the pure fun of the originals. Right now I'm playing Far Cry 2 - what a disappointment. Great graphics but horrible game-play. I'd much rather be playing Wolfenstein or Doom.
- Neville007, on 05/04/2009, -0/+7I missed "Syndicate", "Stunts", "Strike Commander" and "NASCAR Racing", to name just a few.
And those of you who still want a fix of retrogaming, I recommend you to check out DOSBox, and MS-DOS emulator for Windows, Linux and Mac. It does wonders for all those ancient games, and there are free interfaces out there such as DBGL or D-Fend Reloaded which will save you lots of typing.
"Doom", "Heretic" and its sequels work fine too under DOSBox, but you may wish to try other utilities suach as The Doom Legacy or ZDoom, because they add tons of eye candy. - FJRRulz, on 05/04/2009, -0/+7Um...it was on this list.
- duncan202, on 05/04/2009, -0/+7As mentioned above, Tie Fighter was better than X-Wing, but I also would have liked a shout out to Free Space 1 or 2 which were the pinacle of space sims IMHO.
- JeffDUpp, on 05/04/2009, -0/+7<insert generic "insert generic" comment > to try to be funny
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+7In addition, the Sim City image was from Sim City 2000.
- confoundedjoe, on 05/04/2009, -0/+7Gog.com i think it means good old games. They create fully updated versions of older games and tweak them to run on any modern system. I have fallout running on my win7 laptop. Also there is no DRM at all so you can just download it and toss it on all your computers. Games are $5-10.
- Bloodwine, on 05/04/2009, -0/+7Wolf 3D was an amazing game for the time.
Doom was such a leap forward over Wolf 3D that you really couldn't imagine games looking any better. Fighting against someone else over the LAN was also a huge rush too.
Then came Quake. Holy crap, this game was so revolutionary at the time that it was digital crack. When QuakeWorld was release, it was game over man. Job? School? Wife? Chores? Screw 'em ... I had better things to do ... like practice rocket jumping. - inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+6Marathon? Anyone?
- Dweller99, on 05/04/2009, -0/+6Hard to get much better than "damn good" but Tie Fighter managed it.
- Bloodwine, on 05/04/2009, -0/+6I loved the old 2.5D shooters ... Wolf 3D, Blake Stone, Duke Nukem, and Blood.
- thatoneguydunno, on 05/04/2009, -1/+7Great list, thanks. I've played through almost every one of these, except a few of the newest.
- themastersb, on 05/04/2009, -0/+6These are all games that would be great on a netbook.
- Focher, on 05/04/2009, -1/+7Go to Good Old Games (gog.com).
- Cockslap, on 05/05/2009, -0/+6Dug for being on one page.
- tito13kfm, on 05/04/2009, -0/+6No, that is a harkonnen base from Dune 2: The building of a dynasty. Dune was not an RTS. Dune 2 and Dune 2000 were.
- i23Photography, on 05/04/2009, -0/+5Oregon Trail wasn't on this list, and neither was Commander Keen or Mind Maze
