- Slashered, on 02/20/2009, -0/+69'First, we want to thank everyone who has been playing, testing, providing feedback, inviting friends and hopefully enjoying the QUAKE LIVE closed beta. We've grown considerably over the past 6 months and are now excited to announce that we're opening QUAKE LIVE to the general public as an open beta the evening of Tuesday, February 24th. On Monday morning (U.S. central time) we'll be taking beta.quakelive.com down for about 36 hours and then opening to the public at www.quakelive.com on Tuesday evening.
Coordinated with the open beta will be a stats wipe and pruning of player accounts, however we want to make it as easy as possible for all of you to transition over. On Monday, we will be deleting the player accounts of people that have not played in the last 28 days. If you have played within the past 28 days, you will lose your stats, but will NOT lose your player name, custom settings, profile information, etc.. When the site opens again on Feb. 24th, you will be able to use your current email address and password to login as usual. If you have friends that haven't played recently, but will want to maintain their account, let them know that they should play a game between now an Sunday. After Tuesday, we do not expect to ever completely wipe QUAKE LIVE player stats again.
We're going to post some additional information in the Developer Notes about the opening of the game, what it means to leave the 'beta' tag on the site during this time, and discuss some features and functionality that we're planning for the next couple of months that we know you'll be interested in. This is a very exciting time for the project and we hope that all of you, who have contributed your time and feedback, share in that excitement. We hope all of you continue to be active contributors to the game as we work to make it better for months and years to come.'
The game is really *****' awesome so far, and id has done a good job. For those who don't know, Quake Live is Quake 3 played through your browser (full screened), with slightly updated graphics, tweaked gameplay (altered damage and speed values among other things), new maps, new weapons, matchmaking features that have been more readily found on 360 titles, social networking with in-game friends list and join options, Duel, Team Deathmatch, CTF, Instagib and Clan Arena modes, and a LOT of players.
There are still some issues (that most general users won't notice) that need to be fixed, but this game could completely revitalize the FPS deathmatch genre. If you still need a reason why you should play this, please watch the video below:

Please upvote this comment so it's on top, and leave your name and email in reply, and I'll try to get to everyone. Once you install and get in-game, add me as a friend, my account is 'Slasher'.
- 9mmCensor, on 02/20/2009, -1/+19fun. free. ftw.
It is almost like id caused the recession to bring back Quake to the masses for free in the best market conditions for a totaly sweet free game. - MeatMountain, on 02/20/2009, -1/+18Quake3 Arena was the last of the pure skill FPS games. I hate how games these days randomly throw your shots off to simulate "kickback" for the sake of "realism". Railgun hits where you click every ***** time.
- unrealmp3, on 02/20/2009, -1/+17I really hope to see a native linux plugin for it soon.
- FirstDigg, on 02/20/2009, -0/+15I've been playing the beta off and on and must admit it is fun. Glad to see they are opening this up to everyone.
For those who aren't familiar with what quake live is, its basically quake 3 that runs inside of a webbrowser. Only runs on windows though I believe. Worth checking out when it goes, uh, live ;) - Natitude, on 02/20/2009, -0/+14a good game that's free? Can't ask for much more than that.
- mycoplasma, on 02/20/2009, -6/+19"Did they remake it in javascript??"
In all my years of digging, that has got to be the most disgusting post I have ever seen. Off all the languages that allow programs to be embedded in a web page, you assume javascript is what they'd use to remake quake 3!?
Turn in your geek cred at the door. Do not pass go. Do not collect $200. - mightyslick, on 02/20/2009, -0/+8prepare for spam
- AmyVernon, on 02/20/2009, -0/+9Excited much?
- one504, on 02/20/2009, -1/+9I'm looking forward to seeing how the graphics look and how well the control-response is.
- Slashered, on 02/20/2009, -0/+8A little
- darkstar1st, on 02/20/2009, -0/+8i wish q2 ctf would come back, grapple, bfg. i would always join the team that lost the 23 previous matches on some clan server. then armor up 100%get the double damage or speed rune, wait on the quad and bfg, then send a glowing ball of plasma into they base. 6-7 die on 1st ball, reload 10 more die, then find the tunnel, send one down each, kill the clan leader who would declare bfg was illegal, depending on who held it. i remember times when the entire other team would be re spawning and cussing/banning/whining me all at the same time.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 02/20/2009, -0/+8Don't get ahead of yourself. The browser is just a shell to launch the game. The game itself is still a normal piece of code.
- Ac1dburn, on 02/20/2009, -0/+7Just started messing around with the beta version for about a week and it's been great
- mark076h, on 02/20/2009, -0/+7It is just Quake 3 inside your browser.
- mark076h, on 02/20/2009, -0/+7I have been Beta testing Quake Live for about 6 months now,Great game and a lot of fun, pretty amazing that a game that we once used to benchmark new systems now runs inside of our browser, just think in 10 years we will be able to have Crysis do this same thing.
- mitoticz, on 02/20/2009, -0/+6This is awesome. I hope Quake Live is bigger then all the other quakes combined and it flourishes across all continents, spawning massive tournaments with massive prize money. This will lead to the utopian pro gaming world that everyone wants.
Actually scratch that, pro gaming will always be a dream. - AirRaven, on 02/20/2009, -0/+4"You have been signed up for the MEN OF PORN Mailing List!"
...Heh. Should have seen that coming. - inactive, on 02/20/2009, -0/+5Q3 is almost ten years old. If you have mediocre modern hardware it will run like greased lightning through a metal duck.
No, I have no idea what that means either. - Velvolver, on 02/20/2009, -0/+5/model bones/bones

EYE am ready... - limes, on 02/20/2009, -0/+5Can't wait. The QL team has done quite a bit to improve the Quake experience, particularly the new maps created by Method.
- TheJalu, on 02/20/2009, -0/+5I have invites to...Make a reply if you want one. Digg up so people can see this.
- skjalff, on 02/20/2009, -0/+5Q1 was the most pure deathmatch FPS ever :) I don't know what it is, but that game felt solid and gritty and fast, the qualities that were declining through Q2 and Q3, I feel. Don't get me wrong - I'M STOKED, but I guess what I'm saying is that they should do Quake Live for Q1 too.. Q1DM2 FTW
- Tecton1c, on 02/20/2009, -0/+5It's a browser plugin that allows them to run a 3D engine on your machine. It's still good ol' Q3 engine written in C. You can play fullscreen if you're worried about it being inside your actual browser window. It just has to launch from the web browser via their web site.
- decx, on 02/20/2009, -0/+4this digg must make it to the frontpage
quakelive needs more reach - isorfir, on 02/20/2009, -0/+3You don't change position based on how many diggs you have.
- wafflesomd, on 02/20/2009, -1/+5I've been playing the beta for awhile.
Excellent game. - megabytehl, on 02/20/2009, -1/+5Q3 was the most pure deathmatch FPS ever

- P5ycHo, on 02/21/2009, -1/+4Deathmatch is the ultimate experience.
No pussy teamwork to rely on. Just plain hard deathmatch. - mister711, on 02/20/2009, -1/+4There is a bit of a lag on instagib, but otherwise it is great. I love the fact that all of your settings move from one computer to another so you dont need to reconfigure everything again on multiple computers. I am getting about 125 fps on an old P4 with a 4 year old Radeon x600

godetotoro (at) volanin (dot) com (dot) br - AlexMax, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3It's a browser plugin. It's not running in Flash, Shockware, Java, etc. it IS the plugin, so it's essentially running native machine code.
