- Kwipper, on 01/21/2008, -42/+4391st, cause it's my post.
I also would have to say that piracy isn't the ONLY reason why PC games aren't being made anymore, it also has to do with more and more PC users getting fed up with spending 200+ bucks to upgrade their computers in order to play their games on it at a reasonable quality that is equal to a console system. - deadbaby, on 01/21/2008, -41/+376One major reason I pirate PC games are those stupid disk checks. You're already driving me to piracy sites to find a NOCD patch so I figure while I'm there I might as well just download the game too.
- mrfreeziexp, on 01/21/2008, -6/+284Don't copy that floppy!
- Shogi, on 01/21/2008, -7/+163I agree, the disc check is annoying as *****.
- dansmeek, on 01/21/2008, -18/+157since this is related to COD4, i have to ask a question.
COD4 uses a proprietary engine. WHY! in god's name, don't they use this engine for some other games. it's a beautiful engine. i believe "photorealistic" is what some reviewer's have called it. and it runs the game beautifully on PS3/360/PC the same! more people should be using this engine instead of the UT3 engine. - noobeffect, on 01/21/2008, -15/+153The PC version of CoD4 costs $49.99 and it's console counter-parts $59.99, people need to stop the piracy of good games and start supporting great developers by purchasing their games.
- TH3W1R3D, on 01/21/2008, -4/+140This game is pretty good and imo actually deserves purchasing.
- Nissmo66, on 01/21/2008, -2/+127I never understood, buying games via delivery systems like Steam must cut down on the overhead for vendors, so why does it cost the same if I were to go to best buy and buy it...?
- AndrewDB, on 01/21/2008, -18/+142Complexity of PC Gaming?
Wow... gamers are getting dumber, no wonder why game developers are dumbing difficulty levels down. - actorboy, on 01/21/2008, -8/+122People who pirate always say industry need to adapt to the new market. Looks like this industry did.
- taxman, on 01/21/2008, -16/+127There are some other reasons too.
Gaming is getting more mainstream and a much more community oriented activity. When my cousins or friends come over, it always much more fun to play games together than taking turns to play on the PC or fighting for the right side of the keyboard for 2 player sports games.
And ofcourse the complexity of PC gaming. First you have to make sure you have the satisfactory specs, then install the game and go thro' registration and then you have to adjust your settings and get familiar with 20+ keys. This will all probably take only an hour but that's one less hour i have to game. If i use that hour at work, i will make enough to get another game. So the extra 10$ for console gaming is not all that much for most people.
And to finish on a personal note, i just hate gaming without rumble or my couch. - TheGreatBelow, on 01/21/2008, -5/+84Razor1911's release of CoD4 is pretty much *solely* responsible for this, lol.
- thecosmicpope, on 01/21/2008, -17/+95Do you know why I pirate? I am sick of being crap, unfinished, overhyped games that will require several patches just to work. I am sick of being screwed out of money. I pirate, i find out how good it is and then I decide if I buy it or delete it.
Demos for PCs also seem to be becoming rarer and rarer, making it harder to judge games before buying. It's almost if they are trying to hide how poor some modern games are. - Ahnteis, on 01/21/2008, -2/+77What, you haven't figured out how to hook your PC to your projector?
- cl2yp71c, on 01/21/2008, -45/+113Maybe if the game didn't cost as much as some PC peripherals, then more people would buy it?
Just a thought. - psg188, on 01/21/2008, -3/+65Make good games and I'll buy them. It's as simple as that.
A perfect example of this is Oblivion. They didn't waste millions of dollars on security software, they didn't even have CD keys. I bought the game anyway because it was a great game and I wanted to support the developers.
Now days games make use of good online multiplayer to force you to purchase the game, Oblivion's success is testament to the fact that if you just make a great game, a lot of people will respect you and purchase it. - beefchi, on 01/21/2008, -1/+63i wish he reported the "disturbing numbers"...
- darkane, on 01/21/2008, -32/+87People don't pirate for the sake of pirating. They pirate because they can't afford to spend thousands of dollars every year on all of the games in the genres they enjoy. Companies don't lose money from pirates, because those people were never going to buy the product in the first place. The same goes for music.
- Shogi, on 01/21/2008, -25/+78I pirate a lot of games, mostly just because I can't afford to buy all the ones I want. However if I see a game that I really want, I am more than willing to shell out the cash to show my support. I prefer to have a physical copy anyway.
- Turambar, on 01/21/2008, -28/+81maybe if the majority of the games in the market weren't dumbass fratboy games with 2 second learning curves like Halo and CoD 4, maybe us PC nerds would take the time to go buy youre ***** games
also, please explain to me why the space sim genre has been dead for 9 FRAKKING YEARS - mikezerobot, on 01/21/2008, -3/+50First time I played COD4, it was a pirated version. I liked it, and I bought it.
- MalDON, on 01/21/2008, -1/+47This is why I buy all of the games Valve releases. They let you download the game immediately! There's no need for a cd. And they even update the game for you!
- djruden, on 01/21/2008, -3/+47I'm not gonna knock PC gaming, because other than a rare title here or there that has slipped onto the console, we wouldn't have MMO's if it wasn't for PC's. Consoles are getting caught up but still aren't there yet. Heck, the lastest consoles are pretty much PC's with watered down Operation Systems anyway. Not to mention, there's very little piracy in MMO's.
This has always been a problem tho. Who here didn't have a pirated copy of Doom at some point? - ehal256, on 01/21/2008, -2/+39or a 30" monitor with double the resolution...
- gradivus, on 01/21/2008, -15/+51Exactly. Highway robbery is driving people to piracy. Why shell out $50 for a download of 1gig of data when another website has it for free? If someone can give it away the overhead for downloading is near zero,so its $50 profit for them. Make PC games less than $10 for download and I bet a lot more people will buy them.
Also you crybabies whining about upgrading your comp, get used to it,you shell out $500 every 4 years for a console +$30 a controller , but to upgrade your PC $200 every 3 years is too much?
And you can also do other things with your computer, unlike consoles(which are just severely limited PCs with a proprietary OS).Plus you can hook ANY controller on the market up to a PC. - AndrewDB, on 01/21/2008, -7/+40You should of bought it on steam. there is no disc check :)
- Sogui, on 01/21/2008, -17/+50Hah, cosmic that is the worst excuse yet.
In the time that you took to pirate the game you could have easily shopped around to find out if the game was overhyped, buggy, unfinished, etc. I didn't buy KOTOR2 for that very reason. Individuals can be unreliable for purchase advice, but you can generally find a consensus on the internet fairly easily.
For example: In 5 minute you can find that CoD4 has a short campaign, but is very polished and has a fun and addicting multi player. Everyone agrees it's a fantastic game and thus you have no excuse for pirating it because you are unsure of the quality. If you buy the game and still don't like it? Get over it. Just because a game doesn't fit your tastes doesn't mean you should be able to pirate it. If I go to a restaurant and order a new dish, can I run off without paying the bill because it turned out I didn't like it?
Second, you're sending the wrong message to developers. Instead of buying games based on their merit, and rewarding companies that make good games by giving them good sales, you're doing the opposite. Normally in a market system, if a company makes a ***** game, people don't buy it, and the company has to get it's act together and start making better games.
Now instead, here's what many companies see when they release mediocre games.
*flash to the board room*
Well sir, sales for Kane and Lynch were extremely weak.
So, what does that mean?
Well, we thought from the reviews that the game wasn't good enough compared to other titles... but our piracy statistics show that a large number of players are playing pirated copies of the game.
*Therefore instead of the company realizing that it made a bad game due to poor sales, they feel that the piracy is the reason behind poor sales... so instead of trying to make better games, they just focus more effort on putting stupid anti-piracy tools into their next game.
This certainly doesn't apply to CoD 4 as it is a fantastic game, but piracy is having negative consequences on the industry... and it's only going to get worse. - TheTaoOfBill, on 01/21/2008, -35/+67I don't care what people's reasons are for pirating. It's wrong. Can't afford it? So wait for the price to go down.
There needs to be a lot more people discouraging this ***** because not only is the PC gaming industry suffering because of it but the internet as a whole is going to start suffering when corporations and the government start to filter our internet access in order to block pirates. Stop pirating. Your actions affect us all.
Game developers work hard to put their games on the shelves and they deserve to be compensated. Stop being a bunch of selfish pricks. Piracy is having noticeable negative effects on the internet industry. All these years of the internet community encouraging piracy is finally coming back to bite us in the ass. Stop piracy now before it's too late. - nogami, on 01/21/2008, -6/+38If I could play most console games with a keyboard and a mouse, I probably would. But playing with a controller is something I'll never enjoy (or purchase games for).
- solid12345, on 01/21/2008, -7/+38There was a time in America when you couldn't have anything you always wanted. Whatever happened to earning what you get, it is more satisfactory at the end of the day anyway.
- ThndrShk2k, on 01/21/2008, -5/+35People would buy the game if they couldn't play it online. It is expected and not-hated by pirates that a company's online verification system to check for legality when connecting to a server. Of course the game going ***** about it and locking down the whole thing is annoying to most, but hey.
Pirates respect that and understand: "Hey, they want me to pay them to play this game over the internet. I'm OK with that." Any pirate who refutes this does not respect the digital medium. I only want COD4 for online play, and I don't have the money for it. So I don't have it. If it had a decent offline play that was different than the other CoDs and was LONG, I might pirate it for the story, but it doesn't. - ChaosIncarnate, on 01/21/2008, -7/+35Exactly. I'm getting sick of seeing people say you can't play new games on PC unless you spend $1000+. I upgrade roughly once every 3-5 years, about the same as console releases. Consoles are getting more expensive every generation PC parts are hovering around the same prices. Rather than spend say $600 for a new PS3 that has roughly 2 games I'll actually play right now I spent $500 to upgrade my computer. It now runs all my old games and the new ones, that includes the graphics whore that is Crysis which runs on High with no lag. By the time I'll need to upgrade again Sony will be releasing the PS4 for $800 and I'll just spend another $500 and be keeping pace. Take it from someone who's owned every major console from the NES to the Gamecube and back PC is a better platform. As it is right now there's no sense in investing in the newest generation of consoles unless you want to get a Wii for the mini-game games that come out constantly for it. And to taxman, that's the only area that Console is better than PC, nothing is quite like getting a group of friends over and running through a gambit gaming goodness like the old Fighting games, games like Ikaruga, and some of the newer rhythm games.

I agree that the older versions of Steam were buggy. Today though it doesn't have bugs. - inactive, on 01/21/2008, -2/+29This is actually funny in a non-scientology article... but seriously lets stop it now.
- meez, on 01/21/2008, -2/+29Agreed. The artificial "skill cap" can be reached so much faster on consoles than on the PC. Mouse aiming has so much more possibility to suck at or to be good at than a joypad.
If I could get a keyboard+mouse relatively cheap on a 360, I'd go buy one, but not until then. - SuperSunny, on 01/21/2008, -3/+29I don't want MULTIPLE Steam systems! Steam already took a hell long amount of time to reach where it is, and it still has problems! Developers should just release on Steam! It's service is unbelievable. Log into any computer and the games you have bought are at your fingertips.
- brendan87na, on 01/21/2008, -3/+28I think more and more titles will migrate to a Steam sort of approach, decrypting via the internet. I also love the method of buying through Steam, streamlined and simple.
- 00000, on 01/21/2008, -8/+33To be honest I pirated the game for the single playerand to see if it was good. It was soo good it made me buy so I can use the multiplayer.
- HueytheFreeman, on 01/21/2008, -0/+24Sorry. "has very few bugs". Although, I've never had a problem with the Steam client myself.
- maxtypezero, on 01/21/2008, -6/+29i'm sure that if there were no way to get it for free, those people would find a way to buy at least some of those games.
- Sabin, on 01/21/2008, -0/+22Shareware = Free demo, pay for the full version
It was called shareware because you were encouraged to share the demo with people, not the full version. - AndrewDB, on 01/21/2008, -12/+34Are you really that much of a cheap ass that you can't afford $49.99 for a title that's as awesome as CoD4?
- ThetaDot, on 01/21/2008, -0/+22Hear hear! I'd love to see Freespace 3!
- thecheatah, on 01/21/2008, -4/+26"doesn't have bugs" is a statement that can NEVER be true
- das7282, on 01/21/2008, -8/+29I'm not saying piracy is right but I also get sick of the game developers, movie studios, music labels, etc, etc, etc and their "milk the customer for all they got" attitudes. So hows trying to steal from who?
Me personally, I exercise my right to buy or not to buy. I'd rather buy than pirate. I'd also rather NOT buy than pirate. - Zuggy, on 01/21/2008, -4/+25Blaming the fact that PC games are on a slump completely on piracy is a fallacy. There are many factors, many of which being that you are able to get the benefits of PC gaming without the cost and hassle with consoles. Eye-candy? Check. Online Gaming? check. User generated content? limited, but growing.
But dont despair, there have been PC games as long as there have been computers and I don't see that changing anytime soon. - MalDON, on 01/21/2008, -1/+22This is why the Source engine is so awesome. It scales very well.
- Gizza, on 01/21/2008, -2/+22I think that is actually a part of the PC gaming problem too. So many PC games these days are crappy ports of games that were primarily designed for consoles. Dumbed downed difficulty, controls, graphics and interface aren't what PC gamers want, be its starting to be what we're mostly getting.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -1/+21If they could only commission that guy to do another song I'd bet PC pirating would go down tenfold!
