- joemofo214, on 12/12/2008, -0/+26you know blizzard is doing well when the same game takes first and second place
- Trollbane, on 12/13/2008, -0/+21So the only thing that can knock Blizzard off the top two places is...Blizzard?
- idc5, on 12/12/2008, -0/+21I predict Starcraft 2 / Diablo 3 will top everything on that list
- Trollbane, on 12/13/2008, -1/+10WoW is like crack for nerds.
- Rockkybox, on 12/12/2008, -0/+8Oh WOW sells well does it?
- r0g3r, on 12/14/2008, -0/+6Fallout 3 is very high on the list at number 5 and it contains no DRM, doesn't even require disc in drive making it very user friendly for the paying customer (more importantly), but as a side effect also easy to pirate. So what does that show? That easily pirated games seem to do so much better than most games?
Well, Spore scored high too with it's horrible DRM scheme, so I guess it's the other way...... no I don't think you have a valid argument here. There's obviously something else driving sales of games other than how easy or not they are to pirate. (Spore was pirated before release, but features a hard to pirate component, the online part, which is the most compelling aspect of the game).
I do think online games that are "hard to pirate" like this are a good thing, because they completely eliminate any need to try and protect the game any other way. Now if only EA would realize that the online component of Spore is a more compelling reason to buy the game than the fact that it's DRM supposedly makes it hard to get for free, then we'd be on to something. Apparently Blizzard knows this which is a good thing. - aterimperator, on 12/14/2008, -0/+6It's one page, but I guess I'll copypasta anyway:

Are you serious? Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, from the same developer, are going to absolutely KILL the sales. And they will most like be 'good games'. Same with Dawn of War 2, HL2 Episode 3, Call of Duty 5 (not world at war) just to name a few. PC gaming is still cranking out quality games. - Sogui, on 12/12/2008, -3/+8And the piracy point, the fact WoW is doing so well in sales shows that games that are (virtually) pirate-proof like WoW seem to do so much better.
- Trollbane, on 12/13/2008, -1/+5Not to mention that their bringing out the two of the most anticipated PC games of all time (hopefully) next year.
- headband, on 12/14/2008, -1/+5they could have charged $100 for the expansion and almost all of them still would have bought it
- Jsoul87, on 12/14/2008, -1/+5Nah, WoW is like crack that turns normal people into nerds.
- deepleet, on 12/14/2008, -0/+3Only 1 page? Dugg!
- The3rdjj, on 12/14/2008, -0/+3YEAH!!! NANCY DREW!!!
- MrFragtastic, on 12/12/2008, -0/+3Yes WOW is the obvious winner, that should come as no surprise to anyone. Its the other games that have me a little surprised.
- ivanwave, on 12/14/2008, -0/+2Do you actually know what you sound like when you talk? I'll give you a hint...it's not intelligent.
- cafeolee, on 12/14/2008, -0/+2It's even more than that. WOW took 1,2,6,11, and 16. 5 out of the top 20...that is scary!
- Gizza, on 12/15/2008, -0/+2I think we've always known this. Likewise, the only MMO that will ever top WoWs numbers would be WoW2.
- Bith8654, on 12/14/2008, -1/+3What are you talking about? Everquest was way before WoW and they came out with pricey expansions + a monthly fee. I'm pretty sure Dark Age of Camelot did the same thing, only 2 of 7 expansions were free. Asheron's Call also did the same thing. I could go on and on, the point is that Blizzard is far from the first company to charge a monthly fee on top of charging for expansions. But I'd love to hear what these "real mmos" are!
- warriorscot, on 12/14/2008, -0/+2Nice to see Assasins Creed and Bioshock are still in there.
Would have liked to see some games by stardock hit the list but they are never gonna be big sellers. - Jikul, on 12/14/2008, -0/+2The Sims... lol
- inactive, on 12/14/2008, -0/+2Then how do you explain them also having the number 6 spot, the number 11 spot, and the number 16 spot? 6 and 11 are only going to new players.
- fxu1989, on 12/14/2008, -4/+5***** WoW.
Horrible game. - Jeepinator, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Many of those could be players who have sold their account and need a new one for the expansion. Tons of players come back for the expansions who got rid of their account after they got bored with the old content.
But, you are right most of those are probably new players, but mostly as a result of the attractiveness of the expansion. It just so happens that expansions put everyone back on an even field in terms of gear, so those players who start now will not be too far behind. - Broschati, on 12/14/2008, -1/+2"Blizzard's second World of Warcraft expansion Wrath of the Lich King easily topped the charts"
ORLY?! - Baderade, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Other way around.
- BackFall, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1Its actually quite healthy and going very strong. Ignoring the piracy factor, us PC gamers who have decent rigs and play on a regular basis are very much enjoying the state of PC gaming as of now.
Last month, I was playing Fallout 3, Farcry 2, CoD5:WaW, Crysis Warhead, Left 4 Dead and C&C: Red Alert 3. I still am and totally having fun with them. As long as we've got amazing developers like Valve and Blizzard who actually care about their gamers instead of installing stupid DRM crap which doesn't solve anything (thats for you, EA), PC gaming is just as good, if not better, as console gaming.
Just because you're enjoying GoW2 and Halo3 on your 360 doesn't mean PC and PS3 owners aren't having fun. We are, and it will live on. And fyi, not all PC-gamers are WoW nerds. There are tons of PC gamers (like me) who play it because they like PC gaming better. - cptmichael101st, on 12/12/2008, -1/+2WoW's too big for me anymore. Used to love it when it first came out, now it's just over the top.
- devolver, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1I'm happy to see that the Everquest 2 expansion made the list....
- irondragons, on 12/14/2008, -2/+3I'll dig you up, not because I haven't heard that same rant for the 100th, but because I feel sorry for you.
- inactive, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1cool but i GTA San Andreas better than all
- craiginct, on 12/16/2008, -0/+1WoW should be $10 - you have to pay to play online.
- OldDrtySapper, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1anything people would consider a hardcore (death pentaly, loss of items/xp, etc.) mmo is 100x better then wow. give AoC a few years to get where it needs to be and it will rock its too buggy atm but EVERY mmo is for about 1-2 years after launch.
- surian, on 12/15/2008, -0/+15 of the 20 listed there are by Blizzard (and all are directly tied to World of Warcraft). EA also has 5 entries in the list and all of those games are tied to a Will Wright franchise (The Sims or Spore). Having Maxis (from EA) and Blizzard dominating this list is impressive by any measure.
- LarianLeQuella, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1And Warhammer Online is nowhere on that list... WAR is a great game (WAY BETTER than WoW), but I blame Mythic's incompetent approach to advertising...
- Bith8654, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1@OldDrtySapper: I'm pretty sure they were full price but I can't remember, I lost interest in the game pretty fast. Oh and Wrath of the Lich King is $40.
- OldDrtySapper, on 12/15/2008, -0/+1also i dont think that EQ expansions cost $60 on launch i could be wrong tho i didnt play evercrack.
- inactive, on 12/14/2008, -0/+1If I break down the cost into how much it costs me per hour of play, I would still be way ahead of any other game I have ever played.
- Ursad, on 12/12/2008, -2/+2Why link wowscape? Blizzard shut it down about 2-3weeks ago along with many other private server dint they?
- Jeepinator, on 12/14/2008, -1/+1It's easy when you have millions of subscribers and they basically make it a requirement to get the expansion. Everyone wants to get to the next level cap ASAP, so they all buy it at the same time. They won't sell that many the rest of the year.
- inactive, on 12/14/2008, -3/+3If you think the Lich King should be free, then you are a ***** ignorant moron who has no clue what so ever the amount of content that it holds. It easily holds as much new content as any other stand alone game on the market.
You also clearly dont know dick about MMOs, because UO (Ultima Online if you are to stupid to even know what that is) charged for expansions with FAR less content than Lich King.
It is well worth the money. You are just one of those sad little elitist jackoffs with no real skill at anything. You have already proven in your own post that you dont know ***** about MMOs, so do yourself a favor and take up chess. - dmightx, on 12/14/2008, -1/+1Hmm I made 600 dollars off of my account once so basically I made all my money back and had some profit too. Can you tell me about these good mmos though? I'm sure I wouldn't mind trying them out.
- Bigbeartx, on 12/15/2008, -0/+0hehehe...."get with the program"... I get it!
- Trollbane, on 12/13/2008, -2/+2Funny how several of these are expansions, not games
- Thebruce88, on 12/14/2008, -1/+1It's pretty much Valve and Blizzard carrying the PC as a platform right now. The only good non-valve/blizzard PC-exclusive game I've played in a good while has been The Witcher.
- spaceman84, on 12/14/2008, -1/+1Who gives a *****? The only people who care about this are developers, publishers and retailers. Why the ***** is it on the front page of Digg?
- Izzmo, on 12/14/2008, -0/+0Not to meantion the classic is still #11.
- Izzmo, on 12/14/2008, -0/+0hardly, it's all fact "retard"
