- wondertwins, on 05/27/2009, -5/+72Let's just all agree that TF2 is the greatest game ever created.
- lewkus, on 05/26/2009, -1/+54i love playing engineer, but once you got all your buildings up i find you're spending most of your time swiping air with your spanner trying to keep the spies away.
- dsmx, on 05/27/2009, -1/+42Being a engineer is punishing in TF2, it's heart breaking when you spend 5 minutes building everything then in one ubercharge everything you built is gone.
- gu0d, on 05/27/2009, -1/+29I can't wait till I graduate and become a legit engineer throwin' up sentries IRL
- hatdrop, on 05/27/2009, -0/+23this is my wrench. there are many like it, but this one is mine
- wondertwins, on 05/27/2009, -0/+22The main reason why i just switch classes. And those damn spies....
*shakes fist at spies* - Eriksrocks, on 05/26/2009, -0/+18Take it like a man, shorty.

- PhoenixAvatar2, on 05/27/2009, -0/+13Oh, I've got you beat. My senior design project is going to be a real life sentry gun. I plan on building it and everything.
- supermanly, on 05/27/2009, -1/+14better than goatse.
- flash_jordan, on 05/27/2009, -12/+24As much as I love TF2 is this really front page worthy?
- inactive, on 05/27/2009, -0/+12Black people, I assume.
- sTiKyt, on 05/27/2009, -1/+12You're obviously not playing engineer properly, but that's fine not many people play engineer offensively for obvious reasons. Just keep in mind that your purpose is to kill but you can only do so defensively so the ideal engineer will be on the front lines defending his team from counter-attacks and securing choke points. If even a minute goes by without being attacked then its time to move your gear up, don't get stuck in the routine of always upgrading your gear completely before moving on.
Another think to remember is that for all classes, even engineer the element of surprise is just as important as strength. Once your lvl 3 is spotted it's just a matter of time before it'll be destroyed, there's nothing you can do to stop that all you can do is prolong its life. But in most cases once a team knows about the position of a sentry the amount of kills you'll get will drastically reduce as the demolition crew come in to remove your gear(spies, soldiers, demomen hopefully without a medic.) For a change one tactic you can try is building sentries in hard to spot corners facing the direction the enemy is comming from. Sure this is an awful place to build a permanent sentry and will be destroyed as soon as it's spotted but you're likely to get a few kills before that happens anyway so even this is more useful camping at the back of the base defending the Intel from nothing.
I also disagree with the author of this article that the engineer doesn't rely on his team much. I've been in countless cases where snipers, scouts, pyros have helped my kill demos trying to plant stickies from a distance, either by killing the demo who is quite vulnerable when trying to destroy a sentry or by shooting/blowing the stickies of my sentry before the demo has a chance to detonate them. Though I can understand where he's coming from the only time an engie doesn't rely on his team is when he's on his own at the base doing nothing useful. - gzusfreak, on 05/27/2009, -2/+11I like the engineer as much as the next guy, but medic is where its all at
- DudeInAustin, on 05/27/2009, -0/+8I confess that some of the best fun was being the guy willing to guard things deep behind our lines. If you were happy building turrets, then you team won some rounds just because you were willing to play defense. Not glamorous, but needed.
- 3tcp, on 05/26/2009, -5/+13They're sappin my sentry!
- SirSid, on 05/27/2009, -1/+8There's a spy sapping my server

- consonance, on 05/27/2009, -0/+6Who does it target?
- hatdrop, on 05/27/2009, -0/+6offense scores points, defense wins the game
- tracespeck, on 05/27/2009, -0/+5He doesn't sound like a very good engineer. The other team winning while he builds things completely out of their way? I can understand if it's a new map but otherwise that's just not playing well.
- 2Bnor2B, on 05/27/2009, -0/+5A good pyro that understands how to to effectively use the airblast can save the day and your toys.
- MakanGuru, on 05/27/2009, -0/+5214.2 Hours played as an engineer with 68 teleports and 20 kills with a single sentry gun, can you tell the i LOVE this class?
A good engineer needs to firstly understand the map well and where/when best to build to help his team out. However, even the best engineer cannot succeed without the help of his team mates in defending his SGs and thus the joys of TF2, where teamwork>twitch response almost everytime. - Traiklin, on 05/27/2009, -1/+6Sentry down!
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 05/27/2009, -0/+5@Fragowell: I live in West Philly. You can draw your own conclusions.
- FurtThePirate, on 05/27/2009, -1/+6better than goats.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 05/27/2009, -1/+5If you're on defense you're going to lose really damn quick if you don't have any engies.
- trizzleatl, on 05/27/2009, -1/+5wat
- agbullet, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4um. you shouldn't be doing only that. you should be looking for opportunities to move up.
Edit: don't mean to plug, but earlier I wrote a little on engineer play here, and I don't think copy and pasting helps in the neatness dept.
http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/8m5dw/plac ... - Shaflugi, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4Defense is useless? How often do your teams win, stikyt?
- teddylj, on 05/27/2009, -0/+4Deep down, we all want to be credit to team
- taibo, on 05/27/2009, -1/+4ENGINEER IS CREDIT TO TEAM
- asherp, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3By the way, the engineer is playing "Someone Else's Song" by Wilco.
- erikvonvicious, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3maybe its because your taking 5 min to build stuff when it takes 2 tops to max out all 4 buildings., for the rest of us engies we know your gun should move with the battlefront, that means destroy and rebuild.
- agbullet, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3I previously wrote at length about it here: http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/8m5dw/plac ...
tl, dr;
Move the damn gear up. It's irritating having an engie on your team who loves his buildings so much he refuses to tear them down to advance. You are an anchor. The area behind you is often supposed to be clear and safe, and teammates launch attacks from your little mobile base. Moving up increases the theoretical safe zone, and gives your teammates less distance to cover. - HighlanderBR, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3When I play as Engineer, I think everybody is a Spy!!
And need a update soon - 2Bnor2B, on 05/27/2009, -1/+4"A two minute fight with a spy"....Really?
If a spy targets your either you will die or the spy will. It will not be a two minute fight.
FYI,,,The average time life of a spy is 45 seconds and the average life of an engineer is 1.4 minutes. The key word being "average".
http://steampowered.com/status/tf2/tf2_stats.php
PS - I do hate pyros that stand by my dispenser refueling and not doing a periodic spy check. - doshindude, on 05/27/2009, -1/+4try playing 2fort with no engies. your team will lose within minutes.
- Eichenator, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3Less QQ more Pew Pew
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3I don't think it needs to be fixed, I think it's good balancing, provides the other team with a way to stop the teleports.
- sTiKyt, on 05/27/2009, -0/+3Don't get too attached to your machines! That is the most common downfall of engies I see these days.
- dsmx, on 05/27/2009, -2/+4Teleport entrances, you can't defend them without leaving your sentry undefended. Valve have to fix that at present keeping teleports up is almost impossible if the other teams spies are any good.
- sTiKyt, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2Don't get stuck being a mediocre defensive engineer take the fight to them!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYsZ3tLpVMs - PhoenixAvatar2, on 05/27/2009, -1/+3Gives me something to do if the other team isn't pushing. And then I get to yell at my team if I end up losing a two minute fight with a spy because no one will help.
- arthursk, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2Since I started playing TF on dial up in 99' or so, I can say the engineer has been and still is my favorite class.
- d3matt, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2Ditto on the fellow engineers, but pyros only do so much damage... Now, a heavy sitting by a dispensor next to your turret... Only a good demo or a lucky uber group will take that out...
- taibo, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2I told you not to touch that darn thing!
- sloppychris, on 05/27/2009, -1/+3Should be shaking your fist at your pyros for not doing their job.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 05/27/2009, -1/+3Wrong. Getting kills doesn't matter in CTF. What matters is the intel, and defending it. Most people don't realize this, and waste their time just trying to kill off the other team.
