- drake77, on 05/05/2008, -4/+101I remember buying Wolfenstein 3D at a computer show in the local convention center back in the early 90s. There was a booth run by a largely overweight guy with a beard that had massive racks of 3.5" disks. He had all kinds of software available, from games to productivity software to disks full of clip art. They were all labeled with labels that looked like they were printed out on a dot matrix printer and all of his disks cost $3.00 each.
I miss those days. - xruntime, on 05/05/2008, -13/+92It's amazing how gamers were satisfied with a game that didnt even have real 3d graphics and today they bitch about the slightest quirk in the gameplay.
- jonmlm, on 05/05/2008, -5/+45mein lieben!
- tehrich, on 05/05/2008, -1/+40Don't copy! Don't copy that floppy!
- CiceroLegume, on 05/05/2008, -4/+43How the hell have we gone from that to this in 16 years? Amazing.
- tastypastry, on 05/05/2008, -5/+41My first FPS that started it all, thanks for showing me how to kill Nazis Dad!
- Dundasbro, on 05/05/2008, -3/+39Gamers talk about realism in games today, graphical and historical realism. What they don't understand is what they are missing out on. I fully believe that Hitler was a boss carrying two chain guns, and I defy you to disagree with me!
- mrinsanity, on 05/05/2008, -2/+37When I was a kid I absolutely loved going to computer shows. I remember the racks of floppys with mods like Star Wars Wolfenstein (bought it for like 5 bucks) and a few years later, after DOOM, it was more and more awesome to check those out. I was genuinely sad to see the computer shows decline as e-commerce started booming.
- dawnraid101, on 05/05/2008, -1/+30Why is he getting digg down, it truly is. I was looking at my old iPod Mini the other day and held it against my Touch, in the space of 4 years things have changed so much. So comparing Wolfenstien or even doom against things like GTA IV and crysis it is truly spectacular to see the technological advance of our civilization.
- brundlefly76, on 05/05/2008, -1/+29I was browsing files on my BBS, and had seen 'wolf3d.zip' a thousand times because it was really big and I didn't care about wolves - oh and it was really big and would take forever to download @300 baud.
But one day I was jonesing for something new and clicked on it but didn't have enough upload credits.
The admin was lurking and overrode the UL/DL limit so I could download it, because he said it was so cool I had to try it.
I could not believe how it well it ran on my 286/20 turbo. It is hard for young computer gamers to understand what a huge step up the early iD games were from everything else that was available at the time in art, graphics, sound, music, and 3D.
In terms of 3d shooter breakthroughs, afaic, there was just wolf3d, doom, quake, and everything that came after. - radzack, on 12/02/2008, -3/+29achtung!
- PhireN, on 05/05/2008, -1/+26Don't you mean "It's amazing how gamers were satisfied with a game that didn't even have real 3d graphics and today they bitch about the graphics quality not being high enough."
Gameplay is everything, graphics are extra. - spaceboy, on 05/05/2008, -0/+23"a largely overweight guy with a beard that had massive racks of 3.5" disks. "
His beard had Massive racks of 3.5" disks? - Tippis, on 05/05/2008, -0/+20RTFA?
- Charlotte_Web, on 05/05/2008, -1/+19Could it be because we didn't know what real 3D graphics were when W3D came out?
- skip77, on 05/05/2008, -3/+20If there are any Ubuntu users (7.04+) who would like to play... (Shareware episode only, sorry)
http://skipgrube.ath.cx/skip/linux-packages.htm - mrinsanity, on 05/05/2008, -1/+18I can easily say Wolfenstein 3D was the first game to get me seriously hooked on gaming.
I remember loading up and being so excited watching the load bar creep across the screen getting ready (getting psyched!) to play the next level. Nostalgia FTW. - antdude, on 05/05/2008, -0/+16Video including DOS prompt: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3736326287 ...
- joe2100, on 05/05/2008, -2/+18quake is where the real fun started. True 3d with multiplayer over the net. All hail John Carmak.
- inactive, on 05/05/2008, -1/+16Yeah it ***** says that in the article you *****.
- strictnein, on 05/05/2008, -1/+16You just had to be that guy, didn't you?
- LoopyChew, on 05/05/2008, -0/+15I am Death Incarnate!
- KenOh, on 05/05/2008, -5/+19What? Are you amazed that gameplay is more important than graphics? Why the hell would you find that amazing?
- antonio97b, on 05/05/2008, -2/+17Why stop there? Go ahead and list every other game you know.
- ike0507, on 05/05/2008, -5/+19I remember playing this on my Performa 575. Still remember the cheat too. LEDOUX
- StyngerSmash, on 05/05/2008, -1/+15I remember how piracy was pervasive even then. We just didn't have Bittorrent and Rapidshare :)
- browny1978, on 05/05/2008, -4/+17Doom will always be the one for me
- ISurfTooMuch, on 05/05/2008, -0/+12Holy crap, it's still for sale!

- tulpe, on 05/05/2008, -1/+12"leben".. not lieben
- inactive, on 05/05/2008, -1/+11Like it says in the ***** article you mean?
- theaceoffire, on 05/05/2008, -0/+10Easy, dynamically change the perspective shown based on the position of your eyes.
You can do it with a wii mote or a ps3 camera with the correct software. - inactive, on 05/05/2008, -0/+10You don't have to buy it. Just follow these steps:
Get a US Robotics 14.4K Modem. USR's are the best. (Don't forget that you will need a 16550 UART COM port to get full speed).
Ask your friend for a floppy with a telnet client.
Log into your favorite BBS.
Don't forget to install a "Terminate and Stay Resident" virus scanner. This is must-have if you are downloading from BBS's frequently. You will have to edit your autoexec.bat and config.sys to load it on start up. Don't want to end up with the Michaelangelo virus.
Download Wolf3D. (The full version is upwards of 4 MB. Expect this to take a few hours).
Go back and edit your config.sys again. Now that you have already scanned the files you downloaded, disable the virus scanner. Also make sure to REM out the entries for emm386.exe and himem.sys. These are performance killers, and they are unnecessary as Wolf3D has its own way of accessing Extended Memory.
Edit your autoexec.bat to make sure that your SET BLASTER environment variables are correct. You may have to check the jumpers on your Sound Blaster card to know what the correct settings are.
Reboot.
You are now ready to play. Enjoy! - Asianwaste, on 05/05/2008, -0/+8Graphics were amazing back then. So was the gameplay. Wolfenstein was a very daring project in terms of design and content as the FPS genre was hardly explored and a game featuring a robotic Hitler as the last boss takes some serious balls. You can't get away with that anymore now that games are on the censor's radar.
- gllopc, on 05/05/2008, -0/+8It wasn't the 2nd, either. It was within the first 10, though. You had others that proceeded it, such as Maze War (1973), Phantom Slayer (1982), 3-Demon (1983), Wizardry (1981) and Catacomb 3D (1991). I'd even throw BattleZone in there from 1980.
- breckinshire, on 05/05/2008, -0/+8"He didn't step up to Doom unfortunately."
There goes the theory that Wolfenstein is a gateway game. - GiggleStick, on 05/05/2008, -0/+8Guten Mai fünften!
- counterplex, on 05/05/2008, -0/+8I remember when I showed my friends Wolfenstein. They were blown away. Months later I mentioned Doom and they didn't think anything could top Wolf3D. Same thing happened with Quake. Go id Go!
- JMSantos, on 05/05/2008, -1/+8I think that guy was still at computer shows as late as 2002, except they cost $5 and were cd-roms...
- ortucis, on 05/05/2008, -2/+9Somehow I doubt it that games like Oblivion would ever succeed without relying more on 'graphics' first. Graphics save the day for most games these days, gameplay is extra.
- Asianwaste, on 05/05/2008, -0/+7What is actually funny is that I remember my friend's dad who would otherwise never touch a videogame played Wolfenstein like a maniac to test out his new 486 he bought. He didn't step up to Doom unfortunately.
- jonmlm, on 05/05/2008, -0/+7*****. thanks!
- kraft123, on 05/05/2008, -3/+9Halt! Wolfenstein 3D, Quake, Doom, Unreal was amazing games.
- borichka, on 05/05/2008, -0/+6Thanks, helped me solve the memory errors I was getting.
- Zaeth, on 05/05/2008, -1/+7What? Oblivion is an awesome game made by an awesome company. I would still play it even if it looked like Morrowind.
- theaceoffire, on 05/05/2008, -1/+7Its never going to give you up?
- stillmitch, on 05/05/2008, -3/+9Holy crap. Memory is a crazy thing. Thanks for that.
- sayntin, on 05/05/2008, -6/+12FPS started on the PC, lived a great life on the PC. And is now being destoyed by the consoles.
- BobMysterioso, on 05/05/2008, -0/+5I think the omission of Descent to be glaring and unnacceptable. It was the first true 3D environment.
- theaceoffire, on 05/05/2008, -2/+7We have gone from killing a person and they disappear, to having them dynamically collide with the environment. ^_^ Rag doll for the win!
