- gfxluvr, on 02/17/2009, -2/+103Well of course I am depressed.
No girlfriend an addicted to a game that has little gnomes that shoot fireballs out of their hands.
If that doesn't give me cause to be depressed, I don't know what does. - Kakumeikeahi, on 02/17/2009, -0/+86I'd wager depressed people are more likely to be sucked into a fantasy world.
- chromerium, on 02/17/2009, -2/+59I know I felt a lot better after quitting WoW. But I think it had more to do with the fact that I suddenly had about 8 hours of free time every day.
WoW was becoming like a second job to me, and there was no fun in it anymore. - Jimbeeer, on 02/17/2009, -2/+45I'm surprised they could find 7,000 people that still played Everquest II.
- Ubersmush, on 02/17/2009, -0/+37Do we play because we're depressed or are we depressed because we play?
- ramilehti, on 02/17/2009, -22/+55Correlation != Causation
- Ubersmush, on 02/17/2009, -0/+32dugg for honesty
- Stormwern, on 02/17/2009, -0/+30That way for me. Have a clinical depression and I certainly don't like going outside on bad days :P
- inactive, on 02/17/2009, -1/+31They're depressed because someone ninja'd their epic lootz.
- idontlikeyou2, on 02/17/2009, -0/+29Sometime I wonder if people just throw around the punchlines without even reading the article. The study didn't define a definite causation ..
- whatthefu, on 02/17/2009, -0/+26'"This could mean that highly active players get more depressed or that depressed people are more likely to be active role players," said the author of the study, Noshir Contractor, a professor of behavioral science.'
It's interesting to wonder which it is. - roddack, on 02/17/2009, -4/+29That is because they are playing EQ2
- modelchick8806, on 02/17/2009, -4/+29People still play that?
- drcreek, on 02/17/2009, -0/+24No. More depressed people choose to go into a different fantasy world where they are awesome and not single, 35 and uglier then a bucket of elbows.
- mirunit, on 02/17/2009, -3/+21I think I would be depressed if I felt I had to have a girlfriend at all times.
- daPhoenix, on 02/17/2009, -4/+2172% of the 49% of the 27% when including the 18% of the stereotype group of 19%.. These studies don't mean jack.
First of all you're "surveying" which means the information is already twisted by the people answering, second of all your group is insignificantly small compared to overall gaming audience which skews the results even further.
With no indication of where the group was picked (as in what part of the fantastic little globe of ours) it skews the results even further - certain parts of the world seem to be in constant state of depression anyway, judging by the medical sales at least. - bdfariello, on 02/17/2009, -1/+17Welcome back to RL. We thought we'd lost you.
- Pollux667, on 02/17/2009, -4/+19people justifying their WOW play time are in D...wait for it..D..Denial!
- amauldin71, on 02/17/2009, -6/+19I'd be depressed if I was still addicted to Everquest, too. That is so 1999.
- mahler, on 02/17/2009, -1/+11That might be so, but still most people need to be reminded with such headlines.
- iletumi, on 02/17/2009, -3/+12Apparently, and they are really depressed too! I would be too if i played a game that old and outdated!
- seanosays, on 02/17/2009, -0/+9WoW = Everquest 2?
- Pollux667, on 02/17/2009, -5/+14They are playin EQ2, no wonder they are depressed...
- SeaICIubber, on 02/17/2009, -13/+21LEEEEEEEEROOOOOOOOOOOYYYYYYYY

Everquest 2 = Everquest 2 - Jendi, on 02/17/2009, -1/+8Hey, I'm single, 35 and uglier than a bucket of elbows! Were you talking to me directly, or was that just a coincidence?
- dizmoz, on 02/17/2009, -0/+7Hey, nice monitor there buddy... I'd be depressed with a monitor like that too.
- kilworth, on 02/17/2009, -5/+12O RLY?
- meepus, on 02/17/2009, -0/+7More like "depression more likely to cause escapism, which may manifest in MMORPG playing."
- opticwind, on 02/17/2009, -1/+7I
- dmallymally, on 02/17/2009, -1/+7N
- bigp3rm, on 02/17/2009, -1/+7That game ***** sucks. No wonder they are depressed.
- 1337d00d, on 02/17/2009, -0/+6Did you know he isn't the President anymore?
- nomnombacon, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5That's funny, I manage to play WoW on a regular basis and still have a life, even if that life is taking care of my family. I just have no interest in playing 8 hrs at a stretch every day. if i lived all by myself and didn't have a child, idk, it could be different. My husband plays too, it's by far the best value for your money as far as entertainment goes in this recession.
- AbsurdParadox, on 02/17/2009, -1/+6!
- DouglasQ, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5Hahaha, "Democrats is not a very smart man"
- mirunit, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5Absolutely, if this were a statistics project - it would fail so much.
I would like to know:
Where are respondents from (nations)?
Method of information retrieval?
What was used to define 'depressed'?
Did respondents self-identify themselves as depressed?
Why only Everquest 2?
If the above cannot be answered, the question becomes...
Why is someone being paid to do this? Even university researchers get a stipend. - mabsark, on 02/17/2009, -1/+6How about the ***** up state of the world?
How about retards running our countries? - zappaziz, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5Exactly! Why else would god have given us cousins...man I love family reunions.
- KeithA45, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5I respect the study because it doesn't say "If you play MMORPG's, you're 11% more likely to be depressed" but admits that depressed people could just be playing videos games. Still, it needs alot of work, and the two could be completely unrelated anyway (again, correlation != causation)
- solidcube, on 02/17/2009, -0/+5What if there were in-game therapists that you could talk to?
That sounds facetious on the face of it but it might not be as dumb as it sounds. - inactive, on 02/17/2009, -1/+6S
- Bangaarang, on 02/17/2009, -3/+8E
- Falkon, on 02/17/2009, -0/+4I've never found WoW as addicting as some people seem to, I play about 6 hours a week tops.
Of course, WoW isn't my first MMO either, so that probably has a lot to do with it. - Andrwmorph, on 02/17/2009, -0/+4Its all about escapism. I played WoW excessively for a year while I ignored my RL to the point of barely showering. I still consider it the stupidest mistake of my life.
- Smokeythebandit, on 02/17/2009, -1/+5Funny they had to use Everquest players. The WoW players were probably too addicted to answer the questionnaire...
- AbsurdParadox, on 02/17/2009, -0/+4Aren't they the same price...?
- groberts1980, on 02/17/2009, -2/+6Yep, you can always spot the WoW players in here. And this, coming from a former WoW player myself. Sure, I got good grades and held a job, but I still spent every spare minute playing the game. And I defended it pretty much exactly how iletumi defends it.
