- brainboy7777, on 11/07/2009, -1/+125Why does digg have a dragon age banner ad? What the ***** is this, bitmob?
- BroodofEvil, on 11/07/2009, -5/+112RAAAAAAGEEEE
- MCA2142, on 11/07/2009, -0/+69Not digging this ad background *****. So narrow.
- ban1d0, on 11/07/2009, -2/+68It's becoming a nasty trend, developers removing dedicated servers( MW2 and RAGE), removing access to the console (MW2), capping the number of players (MW2) and even removing LAN support (Starcraft 2. Why Blizzard, why?).
All thats left is removing keyboard and mouse support.
It's like they are trying to turn the PC gameplay experience into a console gameplay experience.
Don't get me wrong, I have consoles and some games are great (the exclusives)...but for everything else I rather play on the PC. - Slashered, on 11/07/2009, -3/+63Although RAGE doesn't seem to be a heavy multiplayer title, I still don't like the trend that this is setting. Carmack seemingly wants to see how those Infinity Ward asshats do with IW.net, which is a good idea, but does he really have to?
- AngryDeuce, on 11/07/2009, -5/+54I can certainly understand the reasoning behind switching from a Dedicated Server system to a P2P system; much less overhead and a more controlled online experience...however, I think that PC gamers have come to expect a certain amount of customization and performance, and any developments that limit those two areas are going to be very badly received by the community at large.
At the very least developers should provide server software for those that wish to host their own servers with their own rules, and a P2P system for those that wish to have a more homogeneous, easier to use, experience. For a game developer, this would not be too difficult a task, and the lack of a choice in the matter can unfortunately only be seen as a way to lock a game down and secure future fees for new content. Hell, they could even charge a little extra for the "unlocked" version, as cell phone manufacturers do.
In IW's case, I can only see it as a way to force PC gamers to pay for map packs as they are able to force console players. While I like the idea of DLC in some games as a way to breathe new life into games that would otherwise be gathering dust on a shelf, I think it has had quite a negative impact on gaming as well, as it encourages laziness and greed on the part of the developers. Console gaming is probably going to supplant PC gaming soon, honestly...it really sucks, and I hate it, but the console market is much more closed, and lord knows if a penny can be squeezed out of something, it WILL be squeezed out of something. - robwhite1979, on 11/07/2009, -0/+39WTF is with the background image on this story?! KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!

- 64705, on 11/07/2009, -0/+33The thing I hate the most is the change in width. The comments seem constrained compared to non-tech submissions on digg.
- superkendall, on 11/07/2009, -0/+32That's what I think, the rule is "never trust the client" but when all you have are clients...
- vpotok, on 11/07/2009, -0/+32is it just me or is this digg ad causing massive RAGE.
- zemkacz, on 11/07/2009, -0/+31It seems they are just doing everything possible to get people OFF the pc and onto the consoles, where everything is fully locked down and as someone said above, there is quite a penny to be made on such a environment.
- MyKillK, on 11/07/2009, -0/+28The way I understand it, P2P requires that more of the data be generated client-side in order to compensate for the increase in latency that is ineveitable with using P2P. This works out OK for consoles, because consoles are extremely difficult to hack. This is not the case for PC games.
Use P2P for PC games, and there will be hacks up the wazoo....just watch. - bmc152006, on 11/07/2009, -2/+28*****.
- uevan, on 11/07/2009, -0/+25Now its just black.

- Platypus3333, on 11/07/2009, -1/+19Carmack remains very relevant, even if Id's games themselves have somewhat declined in influence.
- BooYeah, on 11/07/2009, -7/+25***** idiots why cant they just do it both ways like Battlefield did with dedicated and hosted servers that worked perfectly! But seems like the server nazis are invading every corner of decent game developers these days
***** IW and ***** iD!!!!! - jer2eydevil88, on 11/07/2009, -0/+16Add http://cotnet.diggstatic.com/img/skins/dragon_age_ ... to adblock plus
- palehorse864, on 11/07/2009, -4/+19He wants to "out Daikatana" Romero?
- babykicker, on 11/07/2009, -2/+16"At the very least developers should provide server software for those that wish to host their own servers"
Yea thats called dedicated servers. As for more overhead, what could be cheaper then letting the players pay for their own servers? No one is asking ID to pay for the servers, just allow us to run our own. - ruarctb, on 11/07/2009, -1/+14These companies must really not like PC gamer's money.
- Saq0, on 11/08/2009, -0/+13dude we get it, we were going to buy dragon age already.... now leave us the f alone!
- MyKillK, on 11/07/2009, -0/+13"If a client claims it shot a guy but all the others think it missed then they vote."
It's extremely difficult to get multiple clients, all with greatly variable levels of latency, to even agree on what the time is at even given moment, much more so to get them to agree on the vector of a bullet fired at a given time in relation to the vector of a moving player. That's 3 variables (bullet vector, player vector, and time) to agree on. In fact, it's so difficult that to my knowledge, no p2p game tries to do it, and instead simply relies on the client to make legitimate claims about what happened in the game world. As I said this works OK for consoles, because you can't really hack a console game.
Relying on client data for PC gaming is a recipe for disaster - consig1iere, on 11/08/2009, -0/+11In the end VALVE will be the only company gamers like me will worship. It has given us everything and never complained instead it says that it should try harder to make a gamer happy. I like their style !
- Eunonia, on 11/07/2009, -0/+11Well Dead Space for PC had the most terrible keyboard setup. Keys were hard wired into program. Someone from forums there made it possible to change the keys. But makers of Dead Space for pc basically said ***** you pc gamers. No pathes at all. And now they are working on part 2 of the game for 360 and pc. Probably will be another console port.
- icndvl, on 11/07/2009, -0/+9On a side note, nothing kills a game faster then major multilayer flaws at launch, when reviewers are testing it for publication. So if you make a mistake with some over complicated copy protection, online matching system, patch servers or don't take into account strain on your servers resulting from piracy, the launch will fail. Much better some simple DRM-free solution that's sure to work.
Sure people will pirate a successful games without receiving support and online play, but if people like your game they will want to play online with others, and will probably get their friends, and their friend's friend to also get copies. This is the year 2009, people want to play with others, not by themselves against some monsters.
This is a simple concept, why can't game developers GET IT?? - inactive, on 11/07/2009, -1/+102012
- AngryDeuce, on 11/08/2009, -0/+9I'd rather have black then the ***** ads. Adblock Plus is like the greatest ***** add on ever invented, along with Noscript and Grease Monkey...
- puzzud, on 11/08/2009, -0/+9"...the Commander Keen series, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, the Doom series and the Quake series."
Interesting listing order. - mabsark, on 11/08/2009, -0/+8...trust no one.
- kahoona1, on 11/07/2009, -0/+8Considering I don't really know any details about RAGE's multiplayer, this one is a "wait and see".
- AmnesiacJack, on 11/07/2009, -1/+9Cancer? Really?
- perfunction, on 11/07/2009, -1/+9Not having dedicated servers means several things to me:
1) Smaller player limits as VERY few people have home connections with large upload pipes.
2) The ability to host your own games is going to hinge on knowing how to properly configure your firewall(s). If a particular group of friends doesn't have a token geek they are *****.
3) Hosting a game is going to dominate the connection, giving every other member of your house grief.
4) Extremely unpredictable online experience due to relying on Joe Nobody to have a stable, killer connection, located on a node with minimal hops to route through. - aplarson, on 11/08/2009, -0/+7RAGE QUIT!
- Doomsan, on 11/08/2009, -0/+7*****, Digg is horrible like this.
- TotalHalibut, on 11/07/2009, -1/+8No dedicated server support? No sale.
- Orbital101, on 11/07/2009, -2/+9Server Nazis?
