- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -3/+21That's usually how a demo works, my friend.
- fatfreddyscat, on 10/31/2007, -2/+19I'll be honest, I don't always read the EULAs with my software, presuming they are only so draconian. However I'm not surprised to see comments in the forums about adware in Hellgate London, since the demo's EULA includes the following bit that stopped me cold:
3. Consent to Use of Data. You agree that EA, its affiliates, and each Related Party may collect, use, store and transmit technical and related information that identifies your computer, including without limitation your Internet Protocol address, operating system, application software and peripheral hardware, that may be gathered periodically to facilitate the provision of software updates, dynamically served content, product support and other services to you, including online play. EA and/or the Related Parties may also use this information in the aggregate and, in a form which does not personally identify you, to improve our products and services and we may share that aggregate data with our third party service providers.
Seems to me collecting, using, storing, transmitting, and sharing what applications I own goes a little too far, and I don't own any illegal software myself.

http://files.filefront.com/Hellgate+London+Demo/;8 ... - phrozenfearz, on 10/31/2007, -1/+14It has a lot of elements from Diablo II because a lot of the guys who worked on Diablo II left Blizzard to form Flagship Studios (the developer of Hellgate London).
- jtbndy, on 10/24/2007, -0/+11Imagine that. A game not working with Linux....
- battlefield1985, on 10/31/2007, -5/+16I'm going to risk my gaming career here, The game is awesome I've been playing the beta for about 3 weeks, feels like a MMORPG, Plays like a FPS. Very well balanced.
- superfly007, on 10/31/2007, -0/+10The only thing that bums me out is the $9.95 monthly fee you need to pay in order to get all the new content after release. It doesn't really make sense to charge a monthly fee for this game whatsoever. It's not an MMORPG. I would be willing to pay for content packs at $9.95 once every 3 months or so, but not every month just to play the game.
- wilsonthecat, on 10/31/2007, -1/+10If you don't know whether to download the game at 1.2gb, here's some things about it. All the dungeon maps are dynamically created, so you end up fighting in virtually the same dungeon at level 12 as you did at level 3. Infact you fight in the same underworld hell-type dungeon about 4 times from levels 1-10. Some people might like that, personally I prefer each dungeon to be different and have a different theme.
The only MMO feature of it is being able to group with people for instances, and tube "towns" for vendors. Apart from that, it's not MMO at all it's an action rpg game. - junk, on 10/31/2007, -5/+14I realize this is a demo and from a startup independent studio but I was expecting a much more polished experience. For the first 10 minutes or so you can't take a step without a hint message, then at the end it gives you no indication that the demo is over. The interface design is clunky and feels very dated. NPC's just mumbling gibberish, while you scroll through the quest text one line at a time, isn't very engaging. It's like reading Anandtech with the Tourette's Guy standing over your shoulder. I also thought the art direction was extremely weak, but that is always a matter of personal taste and hard to gauge from just a few levels. But if they are as monotone and uninspired as these the game is in trouble.
That said there does seem to be a deep and robust RPG under the surface, it's just that the surface is so bad I don't know if I would take the time to dig deeper and find it. I want to like this game, and was really anticipating it's release, but based on the demo I will be waiting for it to hit the bargain bins. - GeckoSlayer, on 10/20/2007, -1/+10Off playing doom on his toaster through wine.
- Pake, on 10/31/2007, -0/+8I wouldn't just consider them "guys who worked on Diablo II." The Schaefer Brothers, David Brevik, and Bill Roper were like the head, neck, and backbone of the Diablo series. In other words, Flagship Studios is Blizzard North in almost every sense you could imagine.
- j3one, on 10/24/2007, -0/+8Interestingly enough, "wine" used to be "Windows Alternate Theme Engine Renderer" before they decided to take it in anothr direction, aka wine.
- xtmno3, on 10/31/2007, -0/+6But to get to your link we have to go into the comments on digg instead of to the other page with a link. Lets see you talk your way out of this one Dreamscar *evil genius laugh*

- spudnic, on 10/29/2007, -2/+8I think the thing he's getting at is that it doesn't actually tell you that is the end of the demo, there just stops being stuff to do.
- TheDreadDiggerD, on 10/29/2007, -0/+5The meaning of beta has changed a bit over time. These days it's a marketing tool.
- goblindegook, on 10/19/2007, -0/+5It's alright, I'm playing it with my tinfoil cap on.
- Cirok, on 10/20/2007, -0/+5I liked the demo, had a lot of diablo2 elements, like town portal/identifcation, even one of the quests was to look for "Warts leg" in d2 it was Wirts leg ;D
Just a little dissapointed at the looks, they could of polished it up a bit, some of the textures are messy. - TheCaptainJS, on 10/31/2007, -0/+5I Agree, there have been a large number of bugs, and some that were crippling. Its a great game though. and I am really hoping that its better when its released. I run a D2 trading community and I want to make hellgate the new game, and create a catalog of all of the items, etc.
(cc-comp.org/forums if your interested).
One other thing, for all those D2 players out there, this game has a lot of similarities to it. But I think its better in many different categories.
There is still a lot that remains to be seen though. - alexforcefive, on 10/19/2007, -0/+5So it's ad-supported, AND you have to pay extra to get the full game? Yeah, I'll be giving that one a miss. Shame, I really liked diablo :(
- redwire, on 10/29/2007, -0/+4It barely qualifies as spyware, its really adware, to rotate ads on in game structures like a coke sign might later be a sign for pepsi. It does for obvious reasons make use of your ip to change ads and may send stats on those same ads as in count how many times you saw an ad so it knows when to change but its not beyond that.
Don't get me wrong:
It is still lame
It is still distracting
And sadly the way some groups want the industry to head but I wouldn't really call it spyware in the spy on all you do and where you surf spyware sense. - styn, on 10/19/2007, -0/+4If you aren't in the beta, but did apply, go check oyur mail. My invite just came in yesterday. And yes this game is very good! get pat the first two stations and it only gets better, and bigger!
- spyrochaete, on 10/31/2007, -0/+4I believe the original battle.net team is with Flagship as well. You gotta respect a team that's kept a free online matchmaking service online for 10 years.
- brufleth, on 10/31/2007, -2/+6I think the concern is that this late in development it shouldn't still be alpha quality.
- ZenSuckit, on 10/31/2007, -0/+4Buried for SPAM. You can get a direct link from the official website, without going through the abhorrent filefront.
- inactive, on 10/20/2007, -0/+4So you mean most players are using mods, hacks and cheats, scamming each other and PKing each other?
d13 nub5! - spyrochaete, on 10/20/2007, -0/+3You can only design so many monsters before the game spirals out of budget. Wouldn't you rather fight variations of the same monster (like Diablo 2) instead of continually fighting 5 of the exact same enemies? (like F.E.A.R.)
- superfly007, on 10/29/2007, -0/+3"You don't have to do that. You just pay for the extra content, not to "just play the game"."
Read the whole sentence. I was referring to having to pay 9.95 every month regardless of if there was an update that month. In that case you're just paying to play. If they do release a good deal of content every month it's not that big of a problem...we'll see what they do.
Regardless I can't wait to play it. I won't be paying the monthly fee at first, but if they make good on the value for the fee I'll definitely start paying, and I'm sure I'll get all the content that I missed up until that point. - kazamx, on 10/29/2007, -1/+4I am sure that is why its called beta. I thought beta was where they found and fixed bugs
- thanakar, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3The maps are also something I didn't like. You very soon get tired of looking at the same scenery. I did like the British Museum mainly because it was different than the overly repeated generic sewers and hallways I'd been running through for hours.
- Masefield, on 10/22/2007, -0/+3You comment just reminded me. The social committee at my lodge must not have sent the invitations through the hell portal to our last fund-raising breakfast for the local children's hospital. I didn't see any demons at the pancake buffet. I'll have to bring that up at our next meeting.
- Jugalator, on 10/19/2007, -1/+4This is common with online games. Some of this is to help diagnose hardware problems with analysis tools, other things are to prevent e.g. hacks and cheats.
- thanakar, on 10/21/2007, -0/+3And pray tell how you became so familiar with a poop sandwich?
- steviepunk, on 10/31/2007, -1/+4I'm all fine with in game advertising so long as it doesn't affect my game play. However, the relevant part of the EULA seems to be "including without limitation your Internet Protocol address, operating system, application software and peripheral hardware".
IP address, etc I can understand, but do they really need to know what other software I have installed? - MiDri, on 10/19/2007, -1/+4So it's like City of Heros?...
- Epik, on 10/31/2007, -1/+4I've been playing on and off for about 3 weeks now. Although I've been looking forward to this game forever... I have to say, I'm not sold quite yet. Perhaps my expectations were too high but it is just beta and I'm hoping the Flagship team can pull this off.
You don't see anyone else in the game unless you are partied. You only see other players at stations which are the hubs but even stations are instanced sometimes so not everyone at that location is viewable to you. It's like a single player game with chat. Sure you can co-op with up to 4 other players but that's hardly a "mmo". They have yet to release the pvp portion of the game so I've still got my hopes up.
The skill trees need some improving as well but other than that this game has lots of potential. The movement feels good and the control of the guns and swords is right on. I just don't understand how they plan to keep subscribers paying the $10(for elite status) a month after they beat the game. Would you pay for D2 after you've beaten it on legendary/hell multiple times?
Disappointed thus far but hoping for the best come Oct. 31st. - VipeNess, on 10/29/2007, -0/+3I would agree with SlickNic; it should have something to say like, thank you for playing, if you are interested in more; please buy the game. Not just leave off the ending like there is something else without saying anything. Game is TOP NOTCH in my book. Just awesome.
- joeconway, on 10/29/2007, -3/+6my dads a templar...he definately doesnt worship hell...
WAKEUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and stop being an arse.
freemasons do run everything, but whys that a bad thing? better that things are run by people who are intelligent enough to work up to a position of power legitimately; rather than by idiots like yourself:)
*prepares to be dugg down* - mwalker05, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3its setup the way diablo II was. the dungeons in an act are all going to feel similar, but each act will likely be very different. if you enjoyed diablo i think you will enjoy this. its made by the same people.
- KeyLimePie, on 10/31/2007, -2/+5Is there a torrent?
- j3one, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2dugg down? There are more of us than you think...
- Pake, on 10/20/2007, -0/+2Even if Blizzard releases a Diablo 3, the key people that created the Diablo series consisted of the owners of Blizzard North and the lead developer all left Blizzard and are the very people who created Flagship Studios. If you're really wanting Diablo II style play, I suggest Mythos which is Flagship's other game. In short, you could call Flagship Studios "Blizzard North 2.0."
- Elderon, on 10/31/2007, -1/+3My opinion just from the demo?
game is kinda bleh, boring. Graphics are the same throughout all the little dungeons and above ground areas that the demo has you in. Not super bad, but not really great either. I personally found movement to be slightly clunky, but maybe that will change. Mobs were the same 2-3 types of mobs over and over, again this could be just the demo.
It's an easy game to play, but it just has a clunky feel to it, I can't quite but my finger on it. I'll wait till I see reviews of final game before I decide if I want or not, however so far from what I've seen I'd have to say I wouldn't buy. I'd rather play D2 than this game from at least just playing the demo.
just doesn't seem very exciting - dadioflex, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2Just judging from the demo there's going to be a big back-peddling on the subscription model. Possibly wishful thinking but there's nothing here to encourage a monthly charge. I would urge anyone considering paying the lifetime sub to hold off because this could end up as a ten dollar special to unlock extra content deal. What kind of RPG/FPS hybrid is going to attract more than a few thousand players willing to pay for what everyone else is giving away? There are countless crappy grind MMOs out there or Guild Wars (go look for a mature negative opinion of Guild Wars, I dare you...) or there's still Diablo 2. If Blizzard announce a free to play Diablo 3 this game is dead, pack up your stuff and start sprucing up your resume Flagship employees, I don't normally get negative about devs but whoever thought this up deserves to learn the error of their ways the hard way, with a pink slip.
- Asianwaste, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2I'm sure the beta's great... the demo sucks balls.
- hybridcreation, on 10/19/2007, -1/+3For pre-ordering I get to join the Founder's Club, which is a lifetime subscription for the extra content. It sounds cool, but I wish they would give you more than a month to try it out before you have to commit. $149.99 is a lot to pay for something that might not end up being worth it.
- Katana314, on 10/19/2007, -0/+2I sort of have to agree. Just walking around at the start sort of gave the feel of an independent college game. ("Man, collision detection was a bitch...") But I actually never played Diablo 1 or 2, which may affect my opinion.
- Optimaximal, on 10/20/2007, -0/+2Is that a phone number?
- Ravenlockheart, on 11/10/2007, -0/+2I was wondering if any one else has had trouble running this game on a window's vista system and have fixed the problem that they where having cause I personally keep on getting this message::
This application may run out of address space with some configuration and video cards, resulting in stability problems. It is recommend that you install the latest Window's Vista Service Pack and Check for Update Drivers.
for detials see the Microsoft Knowledge Base article #940105
Http://support.microsoft.com/defualt.aspx/kb/940105 ::
If any one else has had this problem and knows the fix please let me know...cause i really want to play this game. -
