- scratend0788, on 09/21/2008, -8/+127frankly, i'm cynical.
- datagod, on 09/22/2008, -0/+76I just can't wait until they stop selling integrated graphics chips that hijack system memory. I hate having to explain to family members why they can't play games on that new system they bought that was $45 cheaper than the one with its own graphics card.
- neo912, on 09/21/2008, -5/+72This looks a little too much like marketing hype to me. I would love to not have to buy new video cards all the time but I don't see them being phased out any time soon.
- AReallyGoodName, on 09/22/2008, -2/+67You could argue the reverse -
Eventually GPUs will be generalised enough to take over from CPUs. - whoreable, on 09/21/2008, -5/+6332 cores? When will the law of diminishing returns set in regarding processor cores?
- whoreable, on 09/21/2008, -8/+65Brianly, I'm also cynical.
- cyberfreak01, on 09/22/2008, -8/+64pretty sure the answer to that is 42
- lacronicus, on 09/21/2008, -9/+65Eventually, cpu's will be powerful enough to take over the role of GPU's
However, the key word there is "eventually."
Even powerhouse chips such as the cell are still incapable of coming anywhere close to the modern GPU in it's area of expertise, let alone doing so while managing its other duties. We're already beginning to see nVidia, intel, and AMD start work on integrated solutions, but they all know the gpu will have its place for some time to come. - RAGEdemon, on 09/22/2008, -10/+58What *****.
Anyone who knows anything about graphics cards will smell the stench a mile away.
Intel has been trying to produce graphics chips for a long time. The vast majority of PCs are sold with integrated Intel chips which have always had extremely low performance.
As the old saying goes: "Will it run Crysis?"
Intel chips can't even launch Crysis never mind even be playable.
nVidia and AMD chips on the other hand, their top end cards slice through Crysis on the highest settings at 70FPS+
The people who think Larrabee will beat even a current generation GTX 280 are most likely from the same group as the people who thought the LHC was gong to implode the world.
It's all just intel PR ***** which is regurgitated by buttmunch reporters trying to crawl up intel's arse. - VyPR, on 09/22/2008, -2/+47And I'm Mike Wallace. Those stories and Andy Rooney tonight on 60 Minutes.
- TrellSaracen, on 09/22/2008, -2/+44When they can handle realtime 3D raytracing, I'll be genuinely impressed.
When they can come up with a soundcard that can handle realtime 3D wavetracing, I'll ***** myself. - dvsbastard, on 09/22/2008, -3/+44Shirley, you can't be serious?
- japface, on 09/22/2008, -0/+39that was a largely pointless article -- it didnt shed light on anything new at all
- jlphoenix, on 09/22/2008, -2/+37Enough to run crysis?
- norman619, on 09/22/2008, -2/+35Never. It's like saying X amount of ram is all you will ever need. We all know this is 100% *****. As the capacity grows so does our use of it. No matter how powerful the CPU or GPU gets it will never be enough. We will find ways to max them out and say "Damn it! I need a faster chip!"
- mikesbaker, on 09/22/2008, -0/+29yes I'm serious. and stop calling me shirley.
/airplane - LucasVB, on 09/22/2008, -7/+35Won't happen. Hardware optimization trumps any multi-purpose CPU by definition, and we're always going to push the limit in that direction.
- bipolarruledout, on 09/22/2008, -2/+28Wow... been a long time since a good vaporware article. Extra points for "massive number or cores". Never mind the fact that most software developers can't figure out what to do with 4 cores as it is.
- mshtml, on 09/22/2008, -1/+26Buried as more Intel Larrabee hype *****.
- Shugii, on 09/22/2008, -2/+26None, the brain is a neural network, don't ***** compare it.
- Thoraxes, on 09/22/2008, -1/+21Dugg for proper use, and use of "defenestrated".
- subterfuge, on 09/22/2008, -1/+21Answer me this: how many processing units does the human brain have?
- bipolarruledout, on 09/22/2008, -0/+20Try convincing someone that should should at least get a system with an AGP (or now a PCI Express) slot even if it comes with onboard graphics.
- johndi, on 09/22/2008, -3/+22Of course the GPU guys would like us to believe that they will be displacing the CPU. Who to believe? I prefer to keep them separate since I game on my PC. My last CPU lasted 5 years before I gave it away. I went through three graphics cards on that system because the games I wanted to play were fine with my CPU, but told me "I refuse to run on that ancient video card." (OK, I admit I cheeped out on the first one by salvaging it an older machine.)
- LeviTheSmith, on 09/22/2008, -0/+18Heaps
- TheGuruStud, on 09/22/2008, -1/+18I think in 2020 people will still be using that line.
- somestranger26, on 09/22/2008, -0/+17Erm, the ATI RV770 core used in the HD4850 and 4870 is capable of 1.2 TeraFLOPS, and the R700 (4870 X2) is capable of 2.4. I'm sure the GTX200 core is also somewhere around there, so no, 1/3 of a teraFLOP isn't too impressive.
- schrutefan, on 09/22/2008, -1/+17They've been saying that for years.
- Shenaniganz08, on 09/22/2008, -2/+17wow what a bunch of *****
even my aging radeon x850 xt pe is better than any integrated video card currently IN DEVELOPMENT. - norman619, on 09/22/2008, -0/+14ChileanGoD:
I'm a freelance 3D modeler/animator. - AceyS, on 09/22/2008, -7/+2042
- tbob19, on 09/22/2008, -2/+14OVER 9000!!!!!!!
- iofthestorm, on 09/22/2008, -0/+11If you're talking about folding@home, video cards fold better than high end CPUs.
- lacronicus, on 09/22/2008, -1/+12Intel's estimates put larrabee (which is just the gpu, not the cpu/gpu) as a good gpu in 2006.
They have a long way to go before they integrate what would be considered a current high end chip into their cpu. - medfreak, on 09/22/2008, -1/+11Wow, there are motherboards with onboard graphics but no PCI-e or AGP?!
- ElAmo, on 09/22/2008, -0/+10nice use of the word buttmunch
- unAntimatter, on 09/22/2008, -2/+12Tru Dat. That's one of those words that, once you know the meaning of, you never forget...
"I defenestrated that trick ass ho fo' not giving me my money." - RoloTomasie, on 09/22/2008, -0/+10First it was the razor blades, now it's the number of cores!
- RAGEdemon, on 09/22/2008, -1/+10I think the person with the head up said arse is yourself.
Case in point:
1. Find a computer with integrated intel chipset.
2. Launch Crysis. - iofthestorm, on 09/22/2008, -2/+11That's highly unlikely. The GPU is so specialized at what it does, a general purpose CPU will likely never get close to it, without becoming more like a GPU.
- regression, on 09/22/2008, -1/+10I agree. MMX anyone?
- camg188, on 09/22/2008, -0/+8Would that be at metric crapload of *****?
- plr4ever, on 09/22/2008, -0/+8We also tend to integrate more and more into the CPU's. Remember when cache was separate from the CPU?
- deadapostle, on 09/22/2008, -0/+8I love the new and improved digg.com. I keep seeing all of these awesome tech articles in here instead of the crap that was going on before the purge.
- stuffradio, on 09/22/2008, -0/+864 KB of ram to be exact!
- h0ly, on 09/22/2008, -0/+8Depends on the task. For raytracing, it can be a lot more than 32.
- UbIwerks, on 09/22/2008, -0/+8"My CPU is a neural network processor. A learning computer."
- deadbaby, on 09/22/2008, -1/+9Larrabee was designed by the same team that did the P4 so I'm not expecting much. It's an interesting idea to reuse old technology this way but it seems like Intel would have to double and triple the core count on a regular basis to keep up. That would be fine except there's a limit to how many cores you can cram into a 45nm chip. If they have to double the cores, they'd have to get it down to ~22nm or add another physical core which isn't going to be pretty in terms of heat and power usage. Looking back at the P4 we saw that strategy doesn't really work out too well. Yes, it's doable but in reality the power and heat problems start to become major factors. AMD & NVIDIA's more specialized designs are more efficient and will scale better on the high end. Larrabee should be a credible low to mid-range solution though. Better than GMAXXX at any rate.
- Nowaiman, on 09/22/2008, -0/+8thanks. i hate it when people butcher quotes
